The centenary of the last Cobb and Co mail service has been celebrated in the state's south-east with a special mail run ending in the Coonawarra region. The four-day re-enactment journey from Mount Gambier to Penola gave locals a taste of gold rush history and an appreciation for modern transport.

00:00 The Cobben Coast Age Coach Service ran rain, hail or shine.
00:06 The last service was run in 1924 in southwest Queensland.
00:10 Services also ran between towns in South Australia's southeast.
00:14 A lot of people probably didn't realise that coaches ran in South Australia.
00:18 Horsemen Rob Fairchild organised a re-enactment of the service to coincide with the centenary
00:23 of the last run.
00:26 They were collecting mail from five schools including Kalangadoo and Millel and dropping
00:32 it off in Panola.
00:33 There are lots of aspects of their schooling that will come into it, looking at history,
00:39 looking at transport and communication systems.
00:42 So yeah, the schools can make good use of it in lots of ways.
00:45 Along the way, these students prepared for a bumpy day-long ride in the carriage by dressing
00:49 in period costume.
00:50 We really liked the gold rush and thought it was really fun to come here and go on the
00:57 carriage.
00:58 While others wrote postcards.
00:59 It's really good because we haven't done something like this before here.
01:00 I don't think it would be good to go back then because now cars can drive a lot faster
01:08 and you can get to Adelaide quicker and they've got a roof.
01:13 More Cobben Coast centenary celebrations will be held as part of a special festival in Surratt
01:17 in Queensland in August.
01:18 So we're really excited about that.
01:19 We're going to be doing a lot of different things.
