00:00 Hi guys, my name is Jack Marshall, I'm a digital reporter with the Langsdorpus newspaper.
00:06 Just wanted to announce today the launch of a new series, video series that we're doing
00:09 called LP Eats, which is going to be a new video series on local places in Preston and
00:15 around the city, which serve up some of the best examples of different cuisines, some
00:19 of our favourite cuisines that we're going to start trying.
00:22 So basically we're going to be doing some video reviews of the best places to get certain
00:27 types of food as per your recommendations as readers. So you're going to be asking readers
00:31 to get in touch with us and to make their own recommendations of their favourite places
00:35 to get the best kebab, pizza, fried chicken, noodles, whatever it might be, burgers in
00:41 Preston, in the city and in the surrounding areas. And then what we're going to do is
00:46 look at those places, go to them, try them for ourselves, see if our readers really do
00:50 have a finger on the pulse when it comes to the best places in Preston for these different
00:56 types of food. So basically what we'll be doing is kicking off the series, trying out
00:59 a few different places and our first series, like I say, is going to be on kebabs. Now
01:04 last year we put out a piece, a bit of a call to arms on our Facebook page, asking people
01:09 where the best places in Preston to get a kebab were. And obviously we had loads of
01:13 responses from people who are really passionate about their local kebab house and this, that
01:17 and the other and the best places in Fraygate to get the best kebabs after a night out and
01:21 best place to go on your lunch break to get a really cheap but authentic meal were. And
01:25 so we put together a bit of a list and shared it and it did really well just in terms of
01:29 people loving the fact that they now have this list of the best places to get a kebab.
01:32 So we're going to pick our top 10 which got most recommendations and we're going to go
01:36 and try them, do a bit of review, do a video review and start grading these places on five
01:42 key areas. So these five key areas are going to be, we're going to be reviewing them on
01:47 the bread, the meat, any extras, so salad or sauce, things like that, the service and
01:52 just the general vibe of the place and then finally on the price as well because obviously
01:56 that's a big part of whether you think a place is worth going to on a regular basis. So we're
02:01 going to be going to all these different places, reviewing them, putting videos, encouraging
02:05 people to get involved, do they have any other recommendations, any other suggestions for
02:09 places we should try. So yeah, without further ado, we're going to do today's piece which
02:13 is going to be on a place called Jaffa which is on Fraygate. I'm in Preston today at our
02:17 UCLan based office so I'm going to be wandering into the city in a minute, heading out, getting
02:22 a bit of lunch and we'll kick off our first review. So cheers!
02:25 Right guys, a rare sunny day in Preston. So I'm just walking across the city, heading
02:30 towards Fraygate. Yeah, off to find a kebab at Jaffa's. Like I say, we're going to be
02:36 doing some classic, we're going to be asking people for the classic kind of chicken shawarma,
02:41 something really simple. We're looking for simple, effective, basic but tasty. That's
02:46 what we're after today. So I'm just about to walk across the city, let's see what we
02:49 can find. Right guys, so here we are on Fraygate and
03:01 as you know it's lunchtime, it's a bit kebab central so plenty of action here near Jaffa.
03:06 So yeah, just about to head in and see what they've got for us.
03:09 Right guys, so successfully missing, got food. Nice and reasonably priced, costs about £5.90.
03:17 So yeah, pretty good price, nice and affordable. Let's go try it!
03:21 Right guys, so here's the kebab, like I say, typical chicken shawarma kebab. Nice little
03:27 sauce with it as well. All good, vibes in the shop were really good, it was really busy,
03:31 really popular, so it was good to see. So yeah, let's dig in!
03:36 Right, so we're sat outside in the unseasonably nice weather, making the most of it. Got our
03:43 kebab here, so we're just going to have a bit of a review. So yeah, here's our first
03:46 bite. First reactions are really good, the sauce
03:54 is amazing, really, really tasty, really, really creamy. A nice combination of kind
04:00 of like the char-grilled chicken and like a creaminess from the sauce, so that's sort
04:06 of what's positive in the kebab. The chicken's amazing, really top notch. Brilliant, can't
04:21 fault it. Going to have a bash at the sauce now in a minute.
04:24 Right, so as you can see, I've popped a bit of like the tandoori flavoured sauce on there
04:27 now as well, which comes with your kebab, so that's a really nice addition, something
04:31 you don't normally find. So yeah, let's try. That really makes it. Nice and spicy, a bit
04:41 of sweetness to it as well. If you'll excuse me for talking my mouth open. Really good.
04:46 It's a 10 out of 10, that, brilliant. Excellent. Right, I'm going to finish this and we're
04:51 coming back to do some review on the five criteria I mentioned before, which is the
04:54 bread or the wrap itself, the meat, any extras like the sauce and the salad, the vibe in
05:00 the place itself and then the price point. So yeah, see you in a minute.
05:03 Just finished a very nice leisurely lunch outside, like I say in the nice weather. And
05:08 obviously today we're doing a review of Jaffa. Brilliant kebab, really, really lovely. It's
05:13 kind of like everything you want. It was the chicken was tender and well spiced, but it
05:18 also had a bit more to it than just typical kind of kebabs. It wasn't just unique to kebab
05:24 meat. It had a lot of sauce as well, which brought a lot to it. And then there was a
05:28 pot of sauce on the side, which was brilliant. So yeah, all good on that front. Really, really
05:32 good. Good lunchtime offering. In terms of the naan bread, that was, it was okay. It
05:38 was standard, nothing to write home about, I reckon. So that was a pretty kind of average
05:44 standard score on that front. Nothing spectacular. Really, when you're looking for something
05:50 outstanding, you're looking for something which is kind of like in a clay oven, really
05:55 got a lot of pop to it. This one was okay, but it was nothing to write home about. The
05:59 meat was great. That's really, really good. I'd say I'd give the naan probably like a
06:03 2.5 out of 5. The meat itself was a 4 out of 5. That was brilliant. Really, really outstanding.
06:12 The extras, they were a 5 out of 5. Brilliant. The salad was lovely. It had a lot to it.
06:16 Very fresh, very kind of refreshing. And the sauce on the side was a really nice addition.
06:19 That was something pretty unique. In terms of the vibe in the place, it was really busy.
06:23 So that was good to see. Really, really nice atmosphere in there. That was a 4. And then
06:29 price point, I think it's pretty competitive at £5.90. So I reckon that's about 3.5 as
06:33 well. So yeah, overall, very good results.
