How are wineries and vineyards being impacted by climate change

00:04 We're already seeing the effects of climate change since the fires of 2020.

00:11 That was a big wake-up call for everybody.

00:14 We haven't had what I would call a normal season since.

00:18 We've been expecting a big drought and heatwave this year

00:22 and it's rained more than in the past couple of years.

00:25 So some varieties are going to become less and less suitable for the climate here.

00:32 But it must also mean that other varieties become more and more suitable for the climate here.

00:37 The danger is in more extremes in the climate.

00:42 There's going to be more droughts, more floods, more fires,

00:46 and that makes growing grapes difficult.

00:49 The danger is also the unpredictability of the climate.

00:53 We don't know whether there's going to be a hailstorm tomorrow.

00:56 All those major events affect the grapes.

01:00 Frosts will destroy the fruit, hail will destroy the fruit, too dry, too hot.

01:08 Some places are going to become unsuitable to grow grapes.

01:13 In Australia, in Europe, in South America.

01:17 But I don't think Canberra is.

01:19 Because Canberra is already a cold region.

01:21 So even if it gets a little bit warmer,

01:25 well, that means the wine will be a little bit different.

01:27 Maybe we'll grow different varieties.

01:29 Maybe we'll be able to ripen varieties and develop new flavors.

01:33 We as growers, we're the first ones to be affected by climate change.

01:37 You've probably seen driving around the countryside,

01:39 those people that have those farmer for climate action signs on their gates.

01:46 So we try and look at what we do and at the way we work

01:50 to make sure our carbon impact is as low as it can be.

01:54 And our contribution to climate change is as low as it can be.
