Geneva Motor Show 2024 - Interview with Giles Vidal, Chief Designer of Renault SA
Transcript
00:00 Well, the idea with the Renault R5 was to trigger emotion and good memories actually.
00:07 It's interesting to do so when you feel it resonates nicely, when you feel a historical car is ready to relive.
00:14 And it's not so often that it can happen, in fact, in full EV, you know, it makes sense to reactivate a product from the history
00:24 and make it extra modern, EV connected with AI inside and so on.
00:30 So, again, when it resonates nicely, it's a thing to do that will please customers, I'm sure.
00:38 The challenge when you do a retro-futuristic exercise like this is to be able to recognize the car, the historical car.
00:48 And there are bits and pieces from the Renault R5 from 1972, but also Super 5 and also the Turbo with the wide shoulders,
00:55 you know, and the strong stance on the road, the dynamic stance on the road.
00:59 And so for the generation like me who knew and lived with those old cars, you know, it resonates, it's good memories coming back in a way.
01:08 But also we wanted to design the car so that younger generations who maybe don't know the old cars
01:13 and maybe they don't even care about the old cars, it needs to be appealing to them for what it is today
01:18 and what it will be tomorrow as a product that they will have on a daily basis.
01:22 So, we crafted, if you will, the design in such a way that it's a modern object for younger generations no matter what.
