00:11 as Dolores Van Cartier in Sistract, and you're heading to Brighton, you're heading to Eastbourne.
00:17 It's a fabulous role, isn't it? A massive role to fill. How do you approach a role that's
00:21 got to be as big as Dolores has got to be?
00:25 Wow. You approach it making sure that you know and understand your material.
00:31 What's the key to understanding her then?
00:36 Really, you know, first of all, a lot of it is in the script, basically, you know, the
00:43 lines, you know. But also, I think she's of a certain age and she wants to be a professional
00:53 singer. I totally understand that. It's an experience that I've had. Been out with somebody
01:01 who, you know, maybe she's hoping for that could help her in some way. Again, I understand
01:08 that. But I, you know, I think having watched, obviously, the movie, having played opposite
01:18 Whoopi as well in the original cast many years ago, you know, Whoopi herself embodied the
01:26 character. And so I understood the story. I think I've understood the story for a long
01:33 time. I've understood the character for a long time.
01:35 There are key things to bring out with her, this ambition to be a singer, but the fact
01:38 is she's transformed by the end, isn't she?
01:41 She's transformed.
01:41 Yeah, but you know, the thing is, I think it's, I'm an older actress now, and I would
01:53 say, you know, the life experiences, understanding human behaviour, it all goes into the mix
01:59 of coming, you know, delivering a good job with this role. You know, the story is about
02:09 love, friendship, acceptance, self-discovery. They're all things that, experiences that
02:16 I've had along the way, and it just makes my job that much more...
02:19 You can draw on that yourself, can you?
02:21 Yeah.
02:21 Yeah.
02:22 Yeah, I can draw on that.
02:24 So what is it, without, obviously, without giving away too much, what is it she learns,
02:28 do you think, through being in the convent? This wild, free spirit who is incarcerated
02:32 in effect, isn't she?
02:34 Yeah, she, I think she learns, she learns, like I said, she learns acceptance, she learns
02:39 that she can, she can accept other people for who they are and, and love them. She accepts,
02:50 she discovers that she's got, I think, a lot more in her to give than maybe she previously
02:57 thought. When she was, when she was with her boyfriend, the gangster boyfriend, you know,
03:04 it was a, it was a very take-take relationship and without much affection, sort of surface
03:12 affection, nothing, nothing deeper. But I think in the convent, she really realizes
03:17 who she is, what she can offer to other people. She doesn't have to be selfish, you know?
03:23 And yeah, it's...
03:26 And your reward as a performer is you're getting a great response. People are loving
03:30 it, aren't they?
03:31 Absolutely. There's also a lot of comedy in the script. There's a lot of comedy in
03:36 the script. And that just tickles my funny bones. I mean, I just absolutely love it.
