00:00 What does the title "Good Grief" mean for you?
00:03 You know, I think it speaks to the message of the movie, which is that grief can be hopeful,
00:10 and grief can be comforting, and there can be love in grief.
00:14 And so, when the title came to me, I was struggling.
00:19 You know, it's like, figuring out the name of a movie is really hard.
00:23 And I just thought about it and instantly wrote it down and knew that that was what it was.
00:28 It's lightness and darkness that exist all around us all the time.
00:32 You know, in some of our darkest moments we have laughter, and in some of our happiest moments there's drama.
00:38 And so, playing on that duality, I think, it speaks to so much in the movie.
00:44 And it really kind of, you know, when it came to me, I was like, "Okay, I don't have to worry anymore."
00:49 Got it. Got it.
00:50 Exactly. Exactly.
00:51 What is the story of "Good Grief" about?
00:53 I know that this story, it tells so many beautiful themes of grief, of love, of loss, but it also has such a diverse cast.
01:00 Yeah.
01:01 So, what does that mean to you?
01:02 It's very important to me.
01:03 And to be able to tell that story between two men, and that friendship as well, be part of this, of that chosen family, was really appealing to me. Yes.
01:17 And you brought up friendship. I just wanted to know, what is your definition of friendship?
01:22 Very good question. True friendship is the chosen family, the people that you have chosen, and that really gets you in every situation of life, and supports you as well.
01:40 I know you get a lot of screen time with Dan, so I just wanted to know, what was it like being in that relationship?
01:47 He was a dream partner. Really, dream director, dream actor. We had a lot of rehearsal, not rehearsal properly, but just chats about the film, about our relationship, about the characters, about Theo, and playing.
02:04 And it was very collaborative, organic, genuine between us two, so it's a dream experience, and here I am tonight. I'm very excited.
02:17 And I know that there's a big karaoke.
02:19 Yeah, yeah.
02:20 Do you have a go-to karaoke song?
02:26 CD of Stars? Yeah? Yeah.
02:32 The movie has such beautiful themes, and I know we kind of talked about that, but what does it mean to have such a diverse cast by your side while filming?
02:39 Oh, it's great. It is really nice, you know. What I love, though, is that it just wasn't something we necessarily had to think about.
02:47 You know, these are characters that aren't defined by that, you know, and I'm fairly sure that when it comes to Thomas, I don't think, I don't know if Dan was aiming for that specifically.
03:00 But it's lovely that that's the way it worked out, you know. Nice to be able to put that on screens.
03:05 What really drew you to this role?
03:08 To the role specifically, I just loved his place within the friendship, you know.
03:14 He's sort of just quietly sweeping up their mess for a long time, sort of being there for them both.
03:21 But he's also neglecting his own needs, I think, and sort of just passing them off and taping over them with humour.
03:29 And I just kind of, I related to that. And I thought the way it culminates for him is a really emotionally honest and beautiful moment.
03:41 What are you most excited for people to see in the audience tonight?
03:45 I'm excited for them to see the whole film. You know, I just think it's such a gorgeous story and Dan's made it such a beautiful film.
03:55 You know, it was a great script to begin with, but the way he's put this thing together, it just, it really, I think, cements him as a really great filmmaker.
04:07 And there's a really big karaoke scene. Do you have a go-to karaoke song?
04:13 I don't, not really. All I can say is last time I did it, I think I did Tenacious D. The best song in the world. Is that what it's called?
04:25 Yes. Anyway, that one. You know the one. We all know the one.
04:28 So I just wanted to ask, I know that this tells such beautiful themes about love and loss, but it also has such diverse characters and such a diverse cast.
04:38 So what did that mean to you?
04:40 Well, it's the world I live in. Do you know what I mean? It's just a reflection of my reality. So that was really important.
04:45 And, you know, it's, you know, I mean, for me, I'm 42 years of age now, and it's amazing that I'm actually seeing the world that I'm familiar actually kind of being reflected back at me for so long.
04:57 Me and Himesh weren't, you know, we weren't really necessarily going to feature, you know, not two of us, two brown people. Wow.
05:06 But so, you know, baby steps, but we're getting there. Do you know what I mean? Like, it's very important to celebrate the progress as well, you know, and highlight that because for me, it just went without saying.
05:17 Do you know what I mean? It wasn't a big deal. And maybe one day we'll get to the place where it isn't a big deal.
