A knifeman with paranoid schizophrenia who killed three people and attacked three others in a spate of “atrocities” in Nottingham last June, has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order. Valdo Calocane, 32 pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of university students Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar and school caretaker Ian Coates. Judge Mr Justice Turner said Calocane would “very probably” be detained in a high security hospital for the rest of his life. Report by Covellm. 00:00 I am of the opinion that because of all the circumstances of your case, including the
00:05 nature of the offences to which you pleaded guilty and the history of mental illness,
00:09 and having considered all the other available ways in which I might deal with you, the most
00:13 suitable method of dealing with your case is by making an order under section 37 of
00:18 the Mental Health Act 1983. I therefore make an order under all six counts of the indictment
00:25 that you will be readmitted to and detained at Ashworth High Security Hospital. I have
00:30 also considered whether this order should be subject to special restrictions which are
00:34 specified in section 41 of the Act. In the light of the medical evidence which I have
00:39 identified, I am satisfied that because of the nature of your offence, and also having
00:44 regard to your past, including your history of mental illness, and to the risk that you
00:49 will commit further offences if you are not detained, it is necessary to protect the public
00:53 from serious harm, and it is not possible to say for how long that will be so. Accordingly,
00:59 I order that you be subject to the special restrictions set out in section 41 of the
01:04 Mental Health Act 1983. You may take him down.
