Director Megan Park and Maisy Stella, Kerrice Brooks and Maddie Ziegler stopped by The Hollywood Reporter's studio during the Sundance film festival to chat about 'My Old Ass.' Plus, Ziegler dishes on acting opposite her good friend Stella for the film.

00:00 We filmed where the movie is actually set, which is rare in Muskoka, Canada.
00:04 And it's beautiful lake country, lots of little islands.
00:06 And sometimes it takes you longer to drive around the lake to get to a location
00:11 than to just simply jet ski across the lake.
00:13 So there was a few moments where we got to jet ski to work.
00:16 I did spend every summer in Muskoka growing up.
00:22 That is very true to my life.
00:23 I went to summer camp on an island up there.
00:25 Yeah, I spent every child of my summer, at least part of it,
00:29 was in Muskoka.
00:30 So it's a very fond, nostalgic place for me.
00:32 And it kind of helped me come up with this sort of nostalgic,
00:36 you know, throwback story in my own mind.
00:38 And it's beautiful.
00:39 I was also like, why hasn't anyone really showcased Muskoka for Muskoka before?
00:43 I think they've used, like, cheated it for other places in the world.
00:46 But I was excited to just showcase it to the world.
00:49 Just being a kid in Canada is like truly the greatest thing.
00:52 And in a film, you can feel Canadian, like, kids.
00:57 It's just like, you can feel it.
00:59 And it's got a little bit of grit to it.
01:01 But yeah, I had a deep connection to lake life.
01:04 I hate, I can't go near the ocean.
01:06 I have a boat. Her name's Bobby Lee.
01:09 That was a big thing.
01:10 Like, when I was auditioning, I sent, like, me doing, like, a boat tour to, like, the casting and, like, production.
01:18 Because I have, like, a little crabby boat as well.
01:20 And so did Elliot.
01:21 So I felt that that was a deep connection between us.
01:24 And also no boating license.
01:26 Me and Lakes, we don't go too far back.
01:27 Sure.
01:28 I definitely, like, grew up.
01:30 Yeah, yeah.
01:31 I mean, we were still, like, feeling each other out, you know, a few more dates and maybe we can, like, go somewhere.
01:36 I grew up, actually, like, in cities.
01:38 So, like, my dad used to always try to, like, get us out the city.
01:41 So we had an RV growing up.
01:43 So I used to go camping a lot.
01:44 So it was really nice and refreshing to, like, touch dirt again.
01:47 However, a lake is not the same as dirt.
01:50 And yeah, we just, we got to keep talking, bro, bro.
01:55 We had an incredible time together on "The Fallout."
01:58 And then when I was writing this, I knew after we cast Maisie, I knew that Maisie and Maddie had been good friends since childhood.
02:06 And so I called Maddie up and was like, "Do you want to come be in this movie and play Maisie's best friend?"
02:12 Yeah.
02:12 Which is, like, we were lucky to have that.
02:13 I don't even got to act at that point.
02:15 This is our first time working together.
02:17 Yeah.
02:17 I think we've always watched each other work or been fans or admirers of each other.
02:22 But to actually, I was actually really nervous because, you know, when you're, like, so comfortable with someone that needs to be professional, I was worried.
02:28 We actually didn't have any problems at that.
02:30 No, it didn't happen at all.
02:31 I was definitely nervous as well.
02:33 But I think, honestly, like, on screen, there's just, like, an added, like, weight to it where you can truly feel that we've known each other for a long time.
02:40 And I just, I love what that feels like on camera.
02:43 But yeah, I was definitely, but we didn't have to be super serious together.
02:47 I think that would have been.
02:48 Like, if we had to, like, cry together, like, do something like that.
02:50 That would be insane.
02:51 Maybe that would have been a little harder.
02:53 But I think because we were being so playful, it was.
02:55 Especially, I feel like, all of the Lake stuff.
02:58 Yeah.
02:58 Especially, like, Carissa and I screaming a lot in the boat while.
03:03 That was all genuine.
03:04 Like, that was not fake.
03:06 That was all very real reactions.
03:08 I feel like the characters just, like, lived within us.
03:10 Yeah, for sure.
03:11 We were able to go home and, like, be ourselves, but still have that part of us.
03:15 As you get more success, what is a splurge that you allow yourself?
03:19 Or a splurge that is still on the bucket list?
03:22 Some type of vacation.
03:23 I mean, this is pretty far down the line, I would assume.
03:26 But, like, some type of, like, vacation home of some sort.
03:29 Like, a little getaway situation.
03:31 That would be my dream splurge.
03:33 I was thinking more, like, this is so on-brand.
03:36 Just, like, health and wellness.
03:37 Like, saunas, cold plunges.
03:39 Like, I want them all in my house.
03:41 Yeah, I think to, like, fully renovate my dream house is, like, the biggest splurge
03:45 that I will indulge in in life at some point.
03:48 Mine is...
03:49 Well, I have a few.
03:50 The first one is to just build a bunch of homeless shelters.
03:54 That would be, like, the biggest splurge.
03:55 Like, I feel like just, I don't know, just to treat other people, that would be a huge
03:59 splurge for me.
04:00 And the second would be to buy every single beignet and every single pot of gumbo I could
04:06 get my hands on.
