00:13 were sworn as president and vice president
00:15 with an over eight hour delay.
00:17 In Palestine, the Israeli regime continues
00:23 its relentless siege against Gaza for the 101st day
00:26 before it is raised to more than 60 Palestinian civilians killed
00:30 in the last hours.
00:31 And in the United States, millions
00:35 face freezing temperatures across the nation
00:37 as storms move in from the Arctic.
00:39 Hello, welcome from the south.
00:46 I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Lesus studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:50 We begin with the news.
00:51 With an over eight hour delay, Bernardo Revalo and Karina
00:54 Herrera were sworn in early Monday morning
00:56 as president and vice president of Guatemala
00:59 after having overcome a series of judicial obstacles
01:01 raised since they went to the second round
01:03 in the general elections in mid-2023.
01:05 The president was sworn in by Samuel Perez of the Zemilla
01:08 movement, who was previously elected
01:10 as president of Congress of the Republic after a process that
01:13 took several hours.
01:14 The authorities took office for the constitutional period 2024
01:17 to 2028.
01:18 Ceremony was attended by several presidents and heads
01:21 of government in addition to high level delegations
01:23 from different countries.
01:25 During his speech, President Revalo
01:26 called to transform the country's political panorama,
01:28 adding that in recent months there
01:30 had been a resurgence of dictatorship habits
01:33 due to the attempts of different sectors
01:35 that sought to prevent his arrival to government.
01:38 And also after several hours of delay,
01:45 the Congress finally sworn in the new deputies,
01:48 which allowed the inauguration of President Bernardo Revalo.
01:51 Members of the legislature previously
01:53 obstructed the swearing-in ceremony
01:54 and the review of credentials of the new legislators
01:56 for more than three hours.
01:58 In view of these, social movements
01:59 announced the intention of Congress
02:01 to hinder the beginning of the new government,
02:03 as well as the actions against the group of the Zemilla
02:06 party, which was described as an independent bench.
02:09 Groups of demonstrators remained in the streets
02:11 claiming that the swearing-in of Bernardo Revalo
02:13 was being prevented due to unnecessary delays by Congress
02:16 over credentials that are hindering the ceremony.
02:19 Finally, the plenary of Congress approved
02:21 the 83 votes that the 23 deputies of the Zemilla
02:23 movement bloc assume their position as independents.
02:27 So they will not be able to run for the board of directors
02:30 and will not be able to preside over working commissions.
02:33 Heads of government, senior officials, foreign ministers,
02:39 and diplomats from more than 60 countries
02:41 were in Guatemala for the inauguration of President-elect
02:43 Bernardo Revalo.
02:45 The president of Honduras, Sumar Agasso,
02:46 was one of the first leaders to arrive in the country.
02:49 This Saturday, along with the EU High Representative
02:51 for Foreign and Security Policy, Joseph Borrell,
02:53 the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal,
02:55 Joao Gomez Carabino, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs

03:00 is the King of Spain, Felipe VI, the President of Paraguay,
03:04 Santiago Peña, and the President of Colombia, Gustavo
03:06 Pedro, among others.
03:07 The world and regional leaders called for an end
03:10 to all irregularities related to Bernardo Revalo's
03:12 swearing-in ceremony.
03:17 Ecuador controlled and quelled this Saturday
03:20 a number of prison riots that broke out simultaneously
03:23 amid this week's wave of criminal violence.
03:25 The government also released more than 150 hostages
03:28 who had been held hostage by the inmates.
03:31 Through a message on the social media,
03:32 ex-Ecuador's President Daniel Novoa
03:34 confirmed the release of all the hostages who
03:36 had been held in the prisons of the cities of Esmeraldas,
03:40 Lata Cunca, Ambato, Cuenca, Zogues, Loja, and Machala
03:43 since the beginning of the week.
03:45 The riots had become the focus of the ongoing violence that
03:47 broke out on Tuesday with a series of attacks
03:50 in different parts of the country.
03:52 According to the authorities, the riots of the last five days
03:54 claimed the lives of at least four people, among them
03:57 a guard and three prisoners.
03:58 Journalists Association of El Salvador records 82 aggressions
04:05 against journalists using the state of exception.
04:08 The association announced an increase
04:10 in hostility and threats against journalists
04:12 while covering and investigating in the context
04:14 of the state of exception.
04:16 A total of 82 aggressions against journalists
04:18 while carrying out their journalistic work
04:20 of reporting, graphic documentation,
04:21 and investigation have been registered
04:23 by the monitoring center of the Journalists Association of El
04:26 Salvador since the state of exception
04:27 began on March 27, 2022 until December 31, 2023.
04:33 In some cases, a police or military authority
04:35 prevented them from carrying out their work in public spaces
04:37 using as an excuse the application of charges
04:40 of unlawful associations.
04:42 According to Gabriel Labrador, reporter
04:45 for Freedom of Expression, the violations
04:48 of freedom of expression in the country
04:49 had been committed by the police,
04:51 and the violations of aggressions and harassment
04:53 towards journalists and the media in general
04:55 have worsened with the implementation
04:56 of the state of exception.
04:58 Also in El Salvador, health authorities
05:04 warned about a considerable increase
05:06 in the number of patients detected with COVID-19
05:08 and a resistance of respiratory diseases
05:10 during the last two weeks.
05:12 El Salvador's health department reported an increase
05:14 of 31 positive cases of the disease in the country
05:17 and reiterated the government's commitment
05:19 to attend the most vulnerable people at risk
05:21 of developing the disease.
05:22 However, they did not discard the possibility
05:24 that the JN1 subvariant is already
05:29 present in the country, so tests were
05:32 sent to the National Health Institute
05:33 to identify the variants that circulate in the nation.
05:36 According to the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabi,
05:39 100% of the residents in senior centers
05:41 have already been vaccinated and urged families
05:44 to vaccinate their elderly in order
05:46 to prevent respiratory infections caused
05:48 by different viruses.
05:49 The World Health Organization Chief Terrorist Adam
05:56 Gabrielsu is scheduled to talk about the SIS-X next week
05:59 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
06:02 Back in May, 2003, terrorists spoke
06:04 of the possibility of the possible emergence of the SIS-X,
06:08 a virus not yet known to cause disease in humans, which
06:11 could emerge as a new pandemic, expected to be 20 times more
06:14 deadly than COVID-19.
06:16 A debate on this issue is set to take place next week,

07:30 Welcome back from the South.
07:32 On Monday, the Israeli regime continued its relentless siege
07:35 against Gaza for the 101st day before the Israelis
07:38 or more than 60 Palestinian civilians
07:40 killed in the last hours.
07:41 At least 32 people were killed in Gaza City
07:45 after Israeli warplanes bombed two homes in Al-Zabra and Al-Saitun
07:48 neighborhoods.
07:49 33 other Palestinians, including children and women,
07:53 were killed in attacks in the southern area of Khan Younis,
07:55 as well as in the Buraj and Al-Maghazi refugee camps.
07:59 Since October 7, Israel has killed over 24,100 civilians,
08:02 mostly women and children, while more than 60,000
08:05 have been wounded and around 8,000
08:07 remain missing under the rubble.
08:09 In the Gaza Strip, it's been over 101 days
08:18 since the start of the Israeli genocide,
08:20 and the United Nations organization
08:21 demands an end to the aggression against the Palestinian people.
08:24 In a statement, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency
08:27 for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East
08:29 deplored the massive destruction, displacement,
08:31 and killing of Palestinian civilians,
08:33 mostly children, as a result of the persistent Israeli
08:36 aggression in the Gaza Strip.
08:38 The agency urged for the need for an urgent ceasefire
08:41 and to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches
08:43 all those affected.
08:45 The UN agency also condemned Israel
08:47 for the physical and psychological scars
08:48 inflicted on the Gaza population, which they say
08:51 will take years to heal.
08:52 Egypt made a statement on the situation condemning Israel's
09:01 measures, including the strict inspection processes that
09:04 prevent the entry of a larger amount of products
09:06 into the territory, also reminded
09:08 that his country continues to work tirelessly
09:10 to enable the entry of a substantial amount of aid
09:13 to Gaza.
09:13 Statements of Egyptian authorities
09:15 and the second official response to Israeli claims
09:18 before the International Court of Justice
09:19 claiming that Egypt is limiting international aid
09:21 to the Strip, something that Cairo had previously
09:24 described as false allegations.
09:25 Meanwhile, Palestinian officials have
09:32 denounced that over 800,000 Palestinians
09:34 are at risk of starvation due to the Israeli policy
09:36 of limiting the entry of food into the Gaza Strip.
09:39 They have stressed the need to allow the entry of larger
09:41 quantities of basic supplies, such as food, water,
09:44 and medicine.
09:45 Palestinian officials say the international community,
09:47 especially the United States and Israel,
09:49 are to blame for the impending catastrophe
09:51 and whatever death may result from famine and thirst.
09:54 In Palestine, heavy rains leave displaced people
10:01 without shelter after flooding from sewage waste.
10:04 Facilities sheltering thousands of displaced people
10:06 next to tents in Jabalia, Beit Hanun, and Beit Lahi
10:09 were submerged due to the rains while flooding shelters
10:12 in government and UNRWA schools, along with shelters
10:14 in the town of Khan Yunis and Rafa.
10:17 Therefore, displaced families urge international agencies
10:19 and World Health Organization to interfere
10:22 to stop the Israeli siege and provide shelters
10:24 to protect civilians against weather conditions.
10:30 On Sunday in South Africa, the legal team
10:32 that attended the International Court of Justice
10:34 was welcomed at the Johannesburg airport.
10:36 South Africa's legal team on Thursday
10:38 presented its legal arguments before the International
10:40 Court of Justice, the UN's highest court,
10:43 to demand urgent precautionary measures against Israel,
10:45 which it accuses of having genocidal intent in its war
10:48 on Gaza and demands an end to the bombing of the Gaza Strip.
10:52 The team of legal and academic experts appointed by Pretoria
10:55 is headed by John Dugar, the South African professor
10:58 of international law and former UN rapporteur on human rights
11:01 in the occupied Palestinian territory.
11:03 This case centers on the violation
