00:02 - Hello, and welcome back to the very first episode
00:10 of the 2024, I was gonna say season, I mean year,
00:13 what are we called again?
00:15 Not Everyone's a Film Critic.
00:16 - Welcome to season three of Not Everyone's a Film Critic.
00:20 I think this is season three, is that right?
00:22 One for a year or two for a year?
00:23 - No, we're season three, I think, yeah.
00:26 - It's the third year of this nonsense, it's marvelous.
00:29 - I feel like we're turning into maybe the OC,
00:33 where season three is really where we're gonna peak.
00:36 - Yeah, just as long as we don't go down the lost route,
00:38 that kind of got properly lost.
00:39 Well, that'd be next year, season four is the worst,
00:41 so we've got one more good season in us, maybe.
00:44 - I don't think we have Buffy levels
00:46 of seven seasons in us, I've gotta be honest.
00:48 - 100% not, we could do a spin-off,
00:49 a kind of angel spin-off, I don't know how we do that,
00:52 but yeah, I think we're okay still.
00:54 Season three is usually all right.
00:55 - The benefit that Angel had, though, to do a spin-off
00:58 is he was really sexy.
01:01 - He was sexy, well, they were both quite sexy.
01:03 - I know, but there's levels.
01:06 - I know, I know.
01:06 - Like, six out of 10s do not get TV spin-offs.
01:10 (laughing)
01:12 We've seen how it happened with Joey, didn't work.
01:15 But, oh, that's harsh, that's harsh, sorry,
01:17 I take it back, I take it back, I take it back, man,
01:19 I take it back.
01:20 Yeah, films, films are great,
01:22 and it's award season, which we kind of like, which is fab.
01:28 I've seen "Naut" at the cinema.
01:30 Actually, I can't lie, I have seen "Wonka,"
01:32 but we discussed it on the last final episode,
01:34 I think, of 2023.
01:36 I'm going to see "Poor Things" tonight
01:38 because I'm excited about it, I really like,
01:41 I'm not gonna try and pronounce the--
01:44 - Yorgos Lanthimos.
01:46 - Exactly, the man from Greece's films,
01:49 I loved "Killing of a Sacred Deer."
01:50 If you have seen, one thing I will recommend,
01:54 if you've seen "Poor Things" already and liked it,
01:55 but you haven't seen "Killing of a Sacred Deer,"
01:57 your favorite, just do.
02:00 - All the films are great, he's never made a bad film.
02:04 - Yeah, I agree with that.
02:05 Yeah, "Lobster" is fantastic as well.
02:07 "Now We Look Like You Da," which is very, very good.
02:11 But instead of going through reviews,
02:13 'cause you've seen loads, Dave,
02:14 and I've seen "Naut" really, and I don't want to--
02:16 - Yeah, I give you a wee flavor of what's coming out, though.
02:18 I can recommend you some films anyway.
02:20 I mean, we certainly won't talk about "Poor Things."
02:22 We'll talk about "Poor Things" next week, but it's great.
02:24 It's fantastic, you're gonna love it, hopefully.
02:26 And it's fabulous, but let's not talk about it.
02:27 'Cause I don't want to spoil it for you.
02:28 Going into "Poor Things," it's really, really good,
02:30 but the least you know about it,
02:32 the less you know about it, rather, the better, really,
02:34 which is kind of the case for most films,
02:36 but even more so for "Poor Things,"
02:37 'cause there's lots of interesting stuff going on there,
02:39 which we'll talk about in a kind of
02:41 spoilery special next week.
02:42 But it's been a really good week
02:44 for preview screenings in Cineworld.
02:46 Other cinema chains are available,
02:47 but both of us have got unlimited cards,
02:49 so they do preview screenings.
02:51 - Cineworld is listening, by the way,
02:55 'cause I can come and-- - I know,
02:56 they'll give us a free Cinecard.
02:57 - Yeah, I get 25% off my food.
03:00 And I'd really like just free VIP screenings.
03:04 - Well, you never know, we can keep on mentioning them.
03:07 But yeah, there's three brilliant,
03:09 brilliant, very different films.
03:11 There's "The Boys in the Boat,"
03:12 which is George Clooney's new film,
03:14 which is a really kind of well-made film.
03:18 I mean, it isn't really doing anything new.
03:20 It's an underdog story about a group
03:22 of working-class American rowers
03:23 who take on the tops as obviously
03:25 a very, very pop sport.
03:26 They take off the tops and they win,
03:28 and they get the chance to go to the Berlin Olympics,
03:31 which is being presided over by Adolf Hitler.
03:33 And it's just a really well-made film.
03:35 It's well-acted.
03:37 Like I say, it's not reinventing the wheel.
03:39 It's kind of an undog thing.
03:41 But I would highly recommend it.
03:42 It's just a good story well-told.
03:45 Then they have "Poor Things" as well,
03:47 which we've already mentioned.
03:48 And then they have "The Beekeeper" with Jason Statham now.
03:51 "The Beekeeper" is by no means a good film.
03:54 It is a very bad film.
03:55 But, Graeme, you have to go and see it.
03:57 It is, it made me laugh so much.
03:59 It has got bee puns all the way through it,
04:01 about three quarters of the way through the film.
04:03 And this is a slight spoiler.
04:05 Yes, please.
04:07 At one point, the pun is "to be or not to be,"
04:11 with bees being bees.
04:12 At one point, someone finds a book
04:14 called "Beekeeping for Beginners,"
04:16 and then starts reading out bits of it
04:18 about how they're gonna solve the problem.
04:20 - Where can you see that film?
04:22 - You can see "The Beekeeper" at Cineworld.
04:23 Cineworld has got extensive screenings
04:25 of "The Beekeeper" coming up
04:27 from the end of next week, I think.
04:29 So "The Beekeeper" is, we love bad films, right?
04:32 We really enjoy bad films.
04:34 Jason Statham's one of these guys
04:35 who makes a lot of bad films,
04:37 but he makes good bad films.
04:38 He's a fairly likable screen presence.
04:40 It's worth seeing the screen.
04:41 The plot is absolutely bonkers.
04:42 It is about a beekeeper, as in a man who keeps bees.
04:45 But he used to be part of a secret government organization
04:49 called "The Beekeepers,"
04:50 who've got nothing to do with bees.
04:52 But he decided to see the tunnel,
04:53 and become a beekeeper.
04:54 It's basically John Wick.
04:55 It is exactly the same plot as John Wick,
04:58 but done really badly, with lots of bad bee puns.
05:00 He goes after the shadow organization,
05:02 another shadow organization,
05:04 who basically rip off pensioners from their life savings.
05:07 So it's quite fun, 'cause you really want these guys
05:09 to get their comeuppance.
05:10 And by jingo, do they get their comeuppance.
05:12 And can I tell you, this thing goes all the way up to the top
05:14 and Jason Statham's gonna go all the way up to the top
05:17 to sort it out.
05:18 I don't know what accent he has.
05:19 It seems to change from English to South African,
05:22 to Irish, to Australian, all the way through the film.
05:24 It's got real explanation,
05:26 but it's quite fun watching him essentially
05:27 traverse the entire planet with his accent.
05:30 And he should've just done English.
05:31 It didn't really matter.
05:32 It's got Jeremy Irons in it.
05:33 I don't know why.
05:34 I don't know how they got Jeremy Irons in it.
05:36 He's like a proper actor.
05:37 He's won an Oscar.
05:38 And he's playing this.
05:39 I mean, he's really good in it,
05:40 but I don't know how they sold him the film,
05:41 apart from lying or maybe kidnapping one of his children.
05:44 It's got Minnie Driver in it.
05:45 She's really good as well.
05:46 She's only in it for about five minutes.
05:47 Again, I don't know how they got Minnie Driver in.
05:50 But I would highly recommend seeing "Beekeeper."
05:53 There's quite a few good films in the cinema right now.
05:56 I have been seeing about 15 films
05:58 over the past three weeks.
06:00 And most of them have been pretty good.
06:01 I can highly recommend "Ferrari" as well,
06:03 which is a film- - Oh, really?
06:04 - It's got Adam Driver in it playing another Italian.
06:09 It's a me, it's Enzo.
06:11 But he's really good.
06:12 And his Italian accent isn't as bad
06:13 as it was in that other film.
06:15 It's got Penelope Cruz in it,
06:16 and she's absolutely brilliant in it.
06:19 It is directed by Michael Mann.
06:20 It looks like a Michael Mann film.
06:22 He can really put a film together.
06:23 It looks magnificent.
06:25 And it's got one of the most shocking crash sequences
06:27 I've ever seen in my life.
06:29 Genuinely, the entire cinema gasped.
06:31 It is absolutely horrific to watch.
06:33 So "Ferrari," I wasn't very keen on it,
06:35 but I went to see it,
06:36 'cause I had nothing better to do
06:36 over the Christmas period.
06:37 There was nothing else happening.
06:39 Really impressed by it.
06:40 As I was, "Next Goal" wins,
06:42 which everyone says is bad.
06:44 This is Taika Waititi's new film.
06:47 And it is, again, an underdog story.
06:49 So you've got the boys on the boat,
06:51 and you've also got Taika Waititi's "Next Goal" wins.
06:54 And it's about a character played by Michael Fassbender,
06:56 who's kind of miscast, but is still really, really good.
06:59 And he's a football man who wants to try to coach
07:02 the worst football team on earth,
07:04 American Samoa, who famously lost 31-0 to Australia,
07:08 which is the worst defeat in international football ever,
07:10 and remains unequaled.
07:12 And it's a really good, fun film.
07:14 Again, it's just a well-made film.
07:16 It's quite funny. It's not too funny.
07:18 Taika Waititi shouldn't be in his own films.
07:19 He's not funny at all.
07:21 But again, it's a nice film to go and see.
07:23 There's lots of just okay films at the cinema.
07:25 Films that you go and see.
07:27 - He was quite funny in "Jojo Rabbit."
07:29 - He was funny in "Jojo Rabbit."
07:31 He was, and he can be a funny man.
07:33 The opening two minutes of this film
07:35 is probably the worst two minutes
07:37 I have seen of any film in 20 years.
07:40 You're sitting there, you're going,
07:40 "I just want to walk out right now,"
07:42 'cause he is in the first two minutes, and it's not funny.
07:44 It is awful.
07:45 He's mugging, and he's kind of doing a funny accent.
07:48 And it's like "Mr. Bean" if "Mr. Bean"
07:51 was really, really, really not good.
07:54 But then it gets much better from there.
07:55 The moment he disappears from the screen,
07:56 it gets much, much better.
07:57 But again, I'd massively recommend it.
07:59 I'd also recommend "Godzilla Minus One,"
08:02 another really good film which is in the cinemas right now,
08:05 which, again, has kind of been released.
08:06 No one's really been talking about it that much.
08:08 It's a Japanese Godzilla film.
08:10 It's set during World War II,
08:12 and it's got a lot to say about things.
08:13 It's a really good quality monster movie,
08:15 which made me cry.
08:16 Not many monster movies make me cry.
08:17 Most movies make me cry, but not most monster movies.
08:20 So again, "Godzilla Minus One" is really good.
08:23 "The Boy and the Heron" is really good,
08:25 Studio Ghibli's new film.
08:27 Hayao Miyazaki coming back from retirement
08:29 to do one more film.
08:31 It's another lovely Studio Ghibli film
08:32 featuring a kid going into a world
08:35 filled with fantastical creatures.
08:36 It's not one of their best films,
08:38 but it's still a really good film.
08:39 These are all films that are not going to be featured
08:41 in awards season generally,
08:43 although "The Boy and the Heron" did win
08:44 the Golden Globe for best animation.
08:46 So apart from "The Boy and the Heron,"
08:47 but they're just good films,
08:49 which have been released over the Christmas season,
08:52 'cause everyone's going to see "Wonka,"
08:53 nobody's going to see much else.
08:54 And they're just good films
08:55 that have been put out this time of year.
08:56 So if you go to cinema right now,
08:58 you can go and see two or three good films in eight weekends.
09:02 So it's kind of in root health at the start of the year,
09:05 the cinema, and it's just gonna get better.
09:07 - I kind of fancy a few films,
09:11 but "Poor Things" has taken total precedent.
09:13 I want to kind of see "One Life."
09:15 Have you seen that yet?
09:16 - "One Life" is really good.
09:17 Again, "One Life" is, it's just a good film.
09:19 You wouldn't rave about it.
09:20 It's a really interesting story
09:22 about a guy who saved lots of children
09:24 from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, as it was.
09:29 It's another really, really good film
09:31 that could win some BAFTAs.
09:33 Again, it isn't like "Poor Things."
09:34 "Poor Things" is a big film, and you're right.
09:35 "Poor Things" is a film that people are gonna go and see.
09:37 It's a big, buzzy awards film.
09:39 It is likely to be my favorite of the year.
09:42 Had it come out last year,
09:44 it might have beaten "Past Lives."
09:45 It's my favorite film of the year.
09:46 It would have certainly been top three.
09:48 It's really, really good.
09:49 I've always said that I wanted "Past Lives"
09:51 to win all the Oscars, and it's not.
09:53 Now I would quite like to see this win all the Oscars.
09:56 So "Poor Things" is the big blockbuster film,
10:00 which is funny, because it's not a blockbuster.
10:01 It's a proper arthouse film.
10:02 It's an 18th certificate.
10:03 It's a strong, strong 18th certificate, may I say.
10:07 It's got some remarkable swearing in it,
10:09 which I'm obviously a big fan of in a film.
10:10 I mean, some really, really remarkable swearing,
10:14 particularly from Mark Ruffalo.
10:15 I mean, my goodness me, that man can swear.
10:18 It is excellent.
10:20 So I would go and see "Poor Things" first,
10:22 but then there's lots of other good things on.
10:24 - In terms of "Poor Things," I do think I really like it.
10:29 As I said before, I think I really liked "The Lobster."
10:34 I really, really liked "The Killing of a Sacred Deer,"
10:38 which kind of brings me on to what we're gonna discuss today,
10:41 which is, of course, "The Golden Globes,"
10:44 'cause I've got a, not a bee in my bonnet,
10:46 but like some of it surprised me.
10:48 I think some of it surprised you.
10:50 - See, if you've got a bee in your bonnet,
10:51 you should go and see "The Beekeeper" by Jason Statham.
10:54 That's the sort of thing,
10:56 I think they use the phrase "bee in bonnet" in "The Beekeeper"
10:59 'cause they use every single bee-related phrase in it.
11:02 - You did a pun without even realizing it.
11:04 - Did I? - You said he decided
11:05 to bee-come a beekeeper.
11:07 - You see, there's so many bee puns.
11:09 You can't say anything without it being a bee pun.
11:11 It's remarkable.
11:12 - Underrated animated movie, "The Bee Movie."
11:17 - Yeah, "The Bee Movie" was a decent movie.
11:19 - Yeah, very good, underrated.
11:21 Not a pun, just a fact.
11:22 But we're gonna discuss "The Golden Globes"
11:25 'cause obviously it's award season,
11:26 so you've got Oscars coming up on March the 10th,
11:30 BAFTAs, all that kind of stuff coming along.
11:32 But "Golden Globes" was always the first one,
11:35 and it seems that, well, it's not always,
11:38 it does kind of give you an indication
11:40 of where people are gonna be swinging towards.
11:43 Now, we haven't really got time to go through the whole lot
11:44 because the kind of one was separated
11:46 into different segments.
11:49 - Well, there's about 400 "Golden Globes."
11:50 I was surprised I didn't win a "Golden Globe."
11:52 There's so many, it's unbelievable.
11:55 - Too many?
11:56 - Yeah, like I think splitting the films
11:59 into what is a best drama and best musical or comedy,
12:02 which seems to encompass most films,
12:05 'cause a lot of the ones
12:06 which are in best musical or comedy
12:07 do not really seem to be comedies to me,
12:09 but anyway, what we've got.
12:11 - I mean, yeah, anyway.
12:15 So we're gonna go through each one
12:16 and have a little look and see what we think is
12:19 the right choice, what we would have chose,
12:21 and just discuss it a little bit.
12:23 Now, of course, the big ones are roles,
12:25 director, film, actor, actress.
12:28 So we're gonna go with director first,
12:31 have a bit of discussion about that.
12:33 Now, the best director for the motion picture,
12:36 the nominees were Bradley Cooper for "Maestro,"
12:38 Celine Song for "Past Lives,"
12:40 Christopher Nolan for "Oppenheimer,"
12:41 Greta Gerwig for "Barbie,"
12:43 Martin Scorsese for "Killers of the Flower Moon,"
12:45 and Iogos Lanthimos for "Poor Things."
12:48 Pronounced it right.
12:49 I don't think there's too many surprises
12:53 on the winner of this one.
12:54 Were you surprised?
12:55 - Sadly, no, I don't think,
12:59 we've talked about this before,
13:00 I don't think "Oppenheimer" is necessarily
13:02 as good a film as people, including you, think it is.
13:05 I understand people love it.
13:06 I think it's got some problems.
13:07 I do think it's a good film.
13:08 I think the two-thirds of it's brilliant,
13:10 but I'm not sure if it's good enough
13:11 to really be winning the awards above these other films.
13:15 I think it's gonna win the Oscar now.
13:17 I think it's just one of these things that's just facts now.
13:20 I would have definitely given it to Iogos Lanthimos
13:23 having seen "Poor Things,"
13:25 simply because, not simply,
13:26 because it is more of a director's film.
13:29 There's more going on as a director in "Poor Things."
13:32 You're watching it going, "My words,
13:33 that is really impressive how he's managed to do that,
13:36 how he's managed to get those performance-like actors,
13:38 the visuals of it.
13:40 It's an absolutely extraordinary-looking film."
13:42 I just think "Oppenheimer" is a bit of a TV movie.
13:45 I don't think much of it's massively cinematic.
13:48 It's got a couple of amazingly cinematic scenes.
13:50 A lot of it is quite theatrical, as far as I'm concerned.
13:53 I don't think it's that difficult a film to direct,
13:55 so I don't think he deserves it, but what do I know?
13:58 He's going to win every award going.
13:59 - Disagree.
14:04 - I know you do.
14:05 I know you do.
14:05 - I have my issues with "Northern" on certain things,
14:08 but I thought "Oppenheimer" was flawless.
14:09 I didn't think it was a bad thing about it.
14:11 I think it was fully deserved.
14:12 - We'll see what you think after seeing "Poor Things."
14:15 You'll get all I can say.
14:16 - It's not going to change my opinion on "Oppenheimer."
14:19 - No, but you might think that the directing
14:21 is slightly better.
14:23 I mean, you see, I think the directing on "Barbie" is better.
14:25 I think "Barbie" is a more difficult film to direct.
14:27 I think that what Greg Gerwig did with "Barbie"
14:30 is amazing, whereas I think what Christopher Nolan does
14:33 is just what Christopher Nolan does,
14:34 and he does it very well.
14:36 But I'm not sure if you'd ever know
14:37 it was necessarily a Christopher Nolan film.
14:38 It's just a well-made film.
14:41 I don't think it's got much flair to it.
14:43 I understand this is completely me.
14:45 Other people completely disagree with me.
14:46 I kind of feel like I'm living
14:48 in an alternative sort of universe.
14:50 I don't really understand what people see
14:52 in his films being so good.
14:53 But no, you're probably right, and I'm probably wrong.
14:56 There's just something wrong with my brain
14:57 where I don't get it.
14:58 - I don't think he's done much decent stuff
15:02 since about "The Dark Knight" trilogy,
15:04 but I thought it was great.
15:05 I mean, it was my number one film from last year,
15:08 and I felt like bad choosing it
15:10 because it's quite an obvious choice,
15:11 but I couldn't take my eyes off it when I seen it.
15:14 I thought it was incredible.
15:15 I thought it was amazing.
15:16 I can't really argue with it too much,
15:18 although there's a couple of films I haven't seen this yet,
15:21 including "Maestro" as well, so fair enough.
15:24 "Best Motion," ugh, motion?
15:29 The monster's coming back on me there.
15:30 And "Best Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy."
15:33 They both were A, "American Fiction,"
15:37 "Barbie," "The Holdovers," "May, December,"
15:40 and "Poor Things."
15:42 Obviously, you're a big fan.
15:43 "Poor Things" won, but there's part of me here
15:47 where I'm really surprised, and it makes me think.
15:51 Now, I haven't seen "Poor Things,"
15:53 I can't say, and it comes more highly rated,
15:56 but I am surprised at how little
15:58 "Barbie's" really been mentioned throughout this.
16:04 - It only won two Golden Globes,
16:05 and one was the made-up award for basically the film
16:08 that's earned most money,
16:10 and the other one was some sort of technical one.
16:12 So yeah, it's quite amazing
16:13 that the film that's kind of saved cinema.
16:15 In fairness, along with "Oppenheimer,"
16:16 I mean, it was the "Barbieheimer" thing,
16:18 and they're gonna want to award both of them,
16:20 but I agree, I think it's a shame "Barbie" didn't win more.
16:22 I mean, I think I have a list of films.
16:23 I mean, again, it is weird.
16:24 The best film musical or comedy,
16:26 you've not seen "May/December."
16:27 I think putting "May/December" into the comedy category
16:30 is quite a reach, because yes, it's got funny bits in it,
16:34 but most films have got funny bits in it.
16:37 Even "Oppenheimer" has got a couple of giggles in it,
16:39 so it seems very old to put that there,
16:41 but I mean, I think that the shortlist for that
16:43 could be the shortlist for the main film,
16:45 as far as I'm concerned.
16:47 I've seen them all,
16:48 and I think they're all remarkable films in their own ways.
16:52 I mean, for best comedy or musical,
16:54 I don't consider "Poor Things" to necessarily be a comedy.
16:58 I mean, it is a kind of sex comedy.
16:59 That's kind of what it is,
17:01 but to call it a comedy is kind of reductive.
17:02 I mean, out of that list,
17:04 the film that is a comedy is "The Holdovers."
17:06 "The Holdovers" is a comedy.
17:08 It sets out to make you laugh.
17:09 It is a funny film.
17:10 It's got jokes in it.
17:11 Everything about it is meant to be funny,
17:13 so I think for the category itself,
17:16 I think that "The Holdovers" should have won,
17:17 'cause it's the best comedy of the year,
17:18 'cause I don't think "Barbie" is a comedy either.
17:21 I think that it's a funny film,
17:22 but is it really a comedy?
17:23 It's a kind of comedy-drama.
17:25 I don't know.
17:27 It's just a weird classification that Golden Globes have.
17:29 I mean, you should get rid of it.
17:30 - It's a musical.
17:32 - Is it a musical?
17:32 I suppose it's got songs in it.
17:34 - I think so.
17:35 - Yeah, I guess so.
17:36 I guess it fits in there somewhere.
17:38 - It's got a heavy amount of original songs.
17:41 - It does, actually.
17:41 Yeah, I suppose you could just about call it a musical.
17:44 Fair enough.
17:45 - Another one that I probably wasn't surprised at,
17:48 and I think is fair,
17:50 but again,
17:52 I don't know.
17:55 I feel like there's not enough being made about it.
17:56 We'll come on to it.
17:57 I'm gonna ask your opinion first.
17:58 The best actor award for a motion picture drama
18:03 was won by Cillian Murphy,
18:04 which I don't think's that surprising.
18:06 I think he's a fantastic actor,
18:08 but it didn't seem to have much competition.
18:09 And when you look at the list,
18:10 there's actually a lot of competition there
18:12 that maybe should have pushed him a bit closer.
18:13 I mean, you don't know how far he pushed him,
18:14 but it felt like he was gonna win,
18:16 and that was kind of it.
18:18 - Yeah.
18:19 - Who else was up for that?
18:20 I'm just having a wee look.
18:22 - In terms of that one,
18:23 it was Andrew Scott for "All the Strangers,"
18:25 Barry Kilgore for "Saltburn,"
18:27 Bradley Cooper for "Maestro,"
18:28 Coleman Domingo for "Rustin,"
18:30 and Leo for "Killers of the Flower Moon."
18:33 - Yeah, I'm very pleased Leonardo DiCaprio didn't win.
18:35 - Yeah, he didn't like his performance in that.
18:37 - I mean, I would have given it to Andrew Scott.
18:39 I know you've not seen "All the Strangers."
18:41 I think his performance in that is absolutely remarkable,
18:44 and it's amazing that it's been nominated
18:46 for a Golden Globe.
18:47 To get a nomination from a film like that
18:49 that very few people have seen,
18:50 and it's a very small British independent film,
18:52 I mean, he's kind of won already by being shortlisted,
18:55 you know, because it's highly unlikely
18:56 that a film or a performance like that would be shortlisted.
18:59 He won't be shortlisted for the Oscars.
19:00 He's there because it gets broken up
19:02 into those two different categories,
19:03 but I think Cillian Murphy was great in "Oppenheimer."
19:08 I don't really have much of an argument with this.
19:10 I mean, even though I'm not a big fan of the film,
19:11 I do think he was extraordinarily good in it.
19:13 So it's very hard to see he shouldn't have won that,
19:16 to be honest with you.
19:18 - I kind of agree, but I thought, I don't know.
19:23 I also thought Barry's role in "Saltburn" was brilliant.
19:26 - Well, "Saltburn" is just one of these films
19:28 that's taken on a life of its own,
19:29 and he is absolutely wonderful in it,
19:30 and I really hope he gets an Oscar nomination,
19:32 'cause he deserves it, it's amazing.
19:34 - There's been...
19:35 It's kind of gone mad on TikTok, "Saltburn,"
19:39 and there's now a cocktail you can get
19:41 somewhere in the UK where you drink it out of a bath.
19:45 - I get the feeling that what's happened with it now
19:47 is there's a lot of people on TikTok
19:49 and these sort of things who are doing these stuff,
19:51 and they've not actually seen the film.
19:52 They've just seen the TikToks,
19:53 and they're actually responding to TikToks
19:55 rather than the film itself,
19:57 because you've got that weird thing
19:57 that apparently very wealthy people
19:59 are doing the final sequence fully clothed, I should say,
20:03 but going through basically
20:04 their mummy and daddy's big house.
20:06 You're going, "You've not watched the film, have you?"
20:08 'Cause if you've watched the film,
20:09 if you understood the film and you're doing that,
20:11 you're not being very complimentary about yourself.
20:13 You're calling yourself not a very nice person.
20:16 But I don't think...
20:17 Either they don't get it or they've not seen it.
20:19 I would suggest that you've not seen it,
20:21 and that they're thick.
20:22 - No comment.
20:24 If I did it in my house,
20:27 I'd literally last until the bedroom, which is just there.
20:30 One bedroom flat, brilliant.
20:33 - Yeah, it's my comedy house.
20:35 - Murder on a...
20:36 Murder in the sitting room, and now I'm in the passage.
20:40 Oh no, I'm already in the kitchen.
20:43 And it's not lyrics, by the way.
20:45 Yeah, I thought, I don't know.
20:50 When I think about "Saltburn" as well,
20:52 context of this award,
20:55 I do think that because of the things
21:00 that happen in "Saltburn",
21:01 people are like, "Oh, ha ha ha, this, that, and the other."
21:03 But I don't think people really realise
21:04 how good Barry Keoghan is in the entire film,
21:07 like his actual performance.
21:09 Like, take away what's written and what he does.
21:10 Like, his performance is like flawless.
21:13 And I think it's right up there with Cillian Murphy's,
21:15 but I'd probably,
21:16 'cause I slightly preferred the film,
21:19 but like, a hair, I'd probably go Oppenheimer,
21:23 because-
21:24 - I think it's a shame for Bradley Cooper as well,
21:25 'cause he was the favourite going into the Golden Globes.
21:27 I still think Bradley Cooper will win the Oscar,
21:29 by the way, for my show.
21:31 And he's kind of been overlooked
21:32 because there are these almost flashy,
21:34 I mean, his performance is very flashy in my show,
21:36 and he is in basically every single scene,
21:39 but I think fewer people have seen my show.
21:41 Fewer or less have really talked about it.
21:43 I've not met many people who've seen it,
21:45 'cause it was only out of cinemas for a couple of days,
21:46 then it went on streaming.
21:47 And I just don't think it's the sort of film
21:49 people want to watch when they're sitting down,
21:51 you know, after their tea,
21:52 'cause it is quite hard work,
21:53 and it's quite a kind of worthy film.
21:55 But I think Oscar will want to reward him
21:57 for a kind of body of work,
21:59 you know, a bit like Leonardo DiCaprio
22:01 winning for that film with a bear in it,
22:04 so that he didn't really deserve to win for,
22:06 but it was a body of work, Oscar.
22:07 And I think that Bradley Cooper will get it for body work,
22:10 'cause he's been nominated so many times,
22:12 and so many people who've been in the films,
22:13 that he's written, directed, and produced,
22:15 and won Oscars, and he hasn't.
22:17 And he should have won one by now.
22:19 So I think that'll be his year for the Oscars,
22:21 but I don't think the Golden Globes
22:22 really care that much about that kind of thing.
22:25 - In terms of the awards,
22:29 I know we were gonna go through each one and stuff,
22:31 but I'm just kind of flicking through them just now.
22:33 And the one that got me the most,
22:34 now, I've seen all of these films,
22:36 I've talked about how much I liked "Oppenheimer."
22:38 I know you didn't like it,
22:39 but I really liked "Killers of Flower Moon."
22:42 "Poor Things," obviously, is going mad at the minute.
22:46 And this had two nominations within that.
22:49 And "Barbie," as well.
22:51 Now, I thought from all the films I've seen,
22:53 and maybe "Poor Things" could rival it.
22:55 I'll make my mind up tonight.
22:59 But maybe it could rival it, maybe not.
23:01 But I'm absolutely shocked that, like,
23:04 Ryan Gosling's not just sweeping up
23:06 all the Best Supporting Actor awards.
23:09 - Yeah, I agree.
23:10 - He didn't win it.
23:12 It was won by Robert Downey Jr. for "Oppenheimer."
23:16 - And I massively disagree with that.
23:18 I think Robert Downey Jr. was fine in "Oppenheimer,"
23:20 but it was Cillian Murphy's film.
23:22 I mean, when you talk about supporting actors,
23:24 it was very much a supporting role.
23:26 I mean, Cillian, I sometimes feel that
23:30 the Best Supporting Actor,
23:31 maybe part of the screen time
23:33 should come into it a little bit.
23:34 You know, there was a time that
23:36 the "GD Dench" won for, like,
23:38 two and a half minutes of screen time or something.
23:40 I mean, it is weird to think that
23:42 kind of different supporting roles,
23:43 like, if you're in the film for basically
23:44 half of it or five minutes of it,
23:46 you're still up for it.
23:47 I just don't think that his performance
23:50 really mattered so much for that film.
23:52 I think if you put someone else in that role
23:55 who wasn't as good,
23:56 I don't think it would have mattered that much.
23:58 It was entirely Cillian Murphy's film.
24:02 - One award that I did want to discuss,
24:04 which I said we wouldn't,
24:05 I didn't put this down as one we had,
24:06 but I just remembered,
24:07 the most controversial one of the night,
24:09 shock horror, because controversy follows him everywhere,
24:12 Ricky Gervais winning Best Performance
24:15 in Stand-Up Comedy on television.
24:17 - Yeah, I don't think the Golden Globes
24:19 understand stand-up comedy for a start,
24:21 because the nominees are just five
24:24 quite well-known US comedians, they're not.
24:27 And they've hardly kind of done a deep dive
24:29 into the world of stand-up
24:30 to come up with that shortlist.
24:32 I mean, it's just all of the usual people.
24:35 And then Ricky Gervais winning
24:36 for what is by far his worst stand-up special.
24:40 I don't even mind Ricky Gervais that much.
24:42 I'm not one of these people who hate Ricky Gervais.
24:45 He's a reasonably talented guy.
24:46 I don't think that he's a great stand-up,
24:48 but I think some of his stand-up shows
24:49 down the years have been quite funny.
24:51 I just thought it was a really lazy show.
24:52 I mean, most of the jokes were old jokes.
24:54 He was just like rehashing jokes
24:56 that he's done in previous shows.
24:58 And he had nothing new to say, I didn't think.
25:01 I mean, you can find the jokes funny if you like.
25:03 I mean, it's just a matter of taste
25:04 where you find them funny.
25:05 I don't think they were particularly well told.
25:07 I laughed a couple of times.
25:08 I did watch it to the end.
25:09 I thought his kind of get-out clause at the end
25:11 was a bit pathetic as well,
25:12 which is basically saying,
25:13 "I can say what I like and blah-de-blah-de-blah."
25:16 And anybody talking about being canceled
25:18 when they're on the biggest media platform on earth
25:22 and being streamed to more people than anyone else on earth
25:26 and saying they're being canceled.
25:27 I mean, clearly doesn't really understand
25:30 what the word canceled means.
25:31 - I don't know if you saw Frankie Boyle's take on it.
25:35 - Yes, and he is right.
25:37 He is right.
25:37 - I mean, Frankie Boyle's take was quite funny.
25:39 Even if, I mean, I didn't mind the stand-up.
25:43 He's not like my favorite.
25:44 I think he's a better writer.
25:45 I think his TV writing's excellent.
25:47 I thought "Afterlife" was superb.
25:48 "Extras," "The Office," all that stuff's like brilliant.
25:52 - I think that it does demonstrate
25:57 why you shouldn't take the Golden Globes too seriously.
25:59 As we shouldn't take the Oscars particularly seriously either
26:01 but I don't think the Oscar's gonna follow the Golden Globes
26:05 as much as people think they will.
26:07 And I still think there could be a big upset
26:09 in some of the big categories.
26:10 I mean, I think Bradley Cooper will win Best Actor.
26:15 I actually think Ryan Gosling
26:16 will also win Best Supporting Actor
26:18 'cause I think they'll want to give Barbie
26:20 more than the Golden Globes have given Barbie.
26:22 And he's the obvious person.
26:23 That Best Adapted Screenplay, weirdly it's gone into
26:28 'cause it's adapting a toy.
26:29 I don't really understand that
26:30 but it's going in for Best Adapted Screenplay.
26:32 Could win that.
26:33 Greta Gerwig, I think, is an outside chance
26:35 for Best Director.
26:36 She's now third favorite for Best Director
26:38 which is quite interesting.
26:40 So she's got a tight-
26:41 - Who's your favorite? Christopher Nolan.
26:42 - Christopher Nolan followed by Yorgos Lanthimos
26:45 who's actually come in a lot.
26:46 Obviously, poor thing's coming in
26:48 at the end of the awards process.
26:50 It's quite interesting 'cause that could put
26:51 the cast amongst the pigeons as well
26:53 'cause coming in late, people are seeing it later.
26:55 It's gonna stick in their minds more.
26:57 And there's a wee chance that that could pick up.
26:59 I think that Emma Stone,
27:01 I would like her to win Best Actress
27:03 but I think it will be Lily Gladstone
27:05 who wins Best Asterisk for that.
27:07 I think that will be one that the Oscars
27:09 follow the Golden Globes on.
27:11 - You got your words mixed up there
27:12 and you said you think she'll win the Best Asterisk.
27:14 - Asterisk.
27:15 (laughing)
27:15 Who's gonna win the Best Obelisk though?
27:17 Gerard Depardieu.
27:18 (laughing)
27:19 - The winner of the Best Exclamation Mark is
27:21 (laughing)
27:23 Dave, way.
27:24 But yeah, I felt like, I don't know.
27:27 One thing I did wanna ask,
27:29 I don't know because it became like a thing where
27:32 whatever kind of happens at the Golden Globes
27:34 is kind of what you can sort of expect to happen
27:36 at the Oscars, which is the big one.
27:37 If we're completely honest with you,
27:38 that's like the big, big,
27:39 not the kind of like shoot down at Golden Globes
27:41 or the Grammy's.
27:42 - No, but that's what people care about.
27:44 People wanna win the Oscars, don't they?
27:45 Yeah.
27:46 - Yeah, the Oscars like a thing.
27:47 And I think, you know, for a long time,
27:50 if like X won Best Picture at the Golden Globes,
27:53 unless something happened, you know,
27:55 in between that and the Oscars,
27:58 you tend to follow suit.
28:00 Do you think that still applies
28:03 or do you think we'll see some changes in the Oscars?
28:05 I'm trying to remember if there was any surprises last year
28:08 when you kind of like,
28:09 oh, well that person won the Golden Globes and so,
28:12 and they didn't.
28:13 - No, I think that everything everywhere all at once
28:15 did far better at the Oscars
28:16 than it did at the Golden Globes.
28:17 I think it won Best Musical or Comedy Film
28:21 in the Golden Globes,
28:22 but that wasn't a particularly competitive category
28:24 compared to the Best Dramatic Film.
28:27 And that's what can happen.
28:27 So, I mean, obviously Oppenheimer's won
28:29 the Best Dramatic Film,
28:30 but like I say, the Best Comedy and Musical shortlist
28:33 was really, really high quality.
28:36 So in that, Oppenheimer wasn't actually competing
28:38 with these films for the same awards.
28:40 Obviously, Christopher Nolan was up for Best Director
28:44 against some of those films,
28:45 but Oscar quite likes splitting Best Director
28:48 and Best Film on occasion.
28:49 So I can see, I don't think Oppenheimer
28:52 will win both Best Film and Best Director.
28:55 I think that if they had any sense
28:56 and they really want to award Oppenheimer,
28:59 I think 'cause of the Barbenheimer thing,
29:01 why not give Oppenheimer Best Film and Barbie Best Director?
29:05 And that basically rewards these two great directors
29:09 who have made these films that have set cinemas alight,
29:12 they've got bums on seats,
29:13 they have basically saved the movie industry this year.
29:15 I think some cinemas would have gone bankrupt
29:18 without those two films this year.
29:19 So I'd like to see them both maybe rewarded in that way.
29:23 And I think that'd be quite nice
29:24 for the two of them to share it.
29:25 It'd be a nice end to the Barbenheimer phenomenon,
29:29 for them both to basically share the big Oscars.
29:31 But we'll see.
29:32 - Outside of that, Best Film, obviously is the big, big one.
29:37 Obviously, there's Best Motion Picture for Drama,
29:41 yada, yada, yada.
29:43 I felt like Best Motion Picture for Drama
29:48 was, for me, the really obvious one.
29:51 You had Anatomy of a Fall Kill,
29:52 The Flower Moon, Past Lives,
29:54 Zone of Interest, Maestro, Oppenheimer.
29:56 So it'd be, especially the Oscars as well,
29:59 doesn't it be chucking in a random foreign film in there
30:01 just because of Parasite won once?
30:03 And I'm kind of like, but I feel like it's never gonna win.
30:05 And I feel like Past Lives, I haven't seen it.
30:07 Not that I don't think I'm gonna enjoy it,
30:09 but I can't say it's not really highly rated.
30:12 I mean, I've not met a single person.
30:14 I've been raving about it for months and months and months,
30:16 and I've been almost physically forcing people
30:18 to go to the cinema to see it,
30:19 because it isn't a film that you see the trailer
30:22 and you go, "Oh my God, I'm really gonna enjoy that."
30:24 I can honestly tell you that nine out of 10 people
30:26 who have seen the film, who I know,
30:28 would say it was their favorite film of the year.
30:30 It was number one in most critics' top tens here.
30:33 And I know that's not something that necessarily interests you
30:36 like the sight and sound poll or the Guardian poll
30:38 or those sort of things.
30:39 But when you have one film winning all of those,
30:41 I think you have to pay a wee bit of notice to it.
30:44 And it's not a hard work film.
30:45 It's not an intellectual film.
30:47 It's not, it is a lovely film.
30:49 It is a beautiful love story told in a very unique way.
30:52 And I just genuinely do not think anybody
30:55 would not come out of it just saying, "I love that."
30:57 'Cause it's a universal film,
30:59 and it talks about something which is entirely universal,
31:03 which is essentially falling in love for the first time
31:06 and later in your life, thinking back to that first love.
31:09 And I don't think there's a person on earth
31:12 that doesn't think about that.
31:13 That is an absolute universal thing.
31:15 So it's something special about first love.
31:16 And the way it approaches it and the way that it
31:20 has of explaining certain things
31:22 that happen to you later in life,
31:23 it's just beautiful and life-changing.
31:25 And go and see it, Graham.
31:26 It'll be out again before the Oscars
31:27 because it'll just get more and more releases.
31:29 It'll be back at Cineworld,
31:30 which is a very good place to go and watch films.
31:32 And it'll be back at Cineworld again just before the Oscars.
31:35 And it's well worth going to see it.
31:36 Go and take your partner, go and take Ash.
31:39 She'll love it as well.
31:39 She'll love you for taking her to it, I would imagine.
31:43 And it's a great film.
31:44 Go and see "Pass Likes."
31:46 Go on.
31:47 - I also wanna, 'cause I just said that,
31:48 like that was, it felt like the foreign film
31:51 that was in there, but actually,
31:53 and that would mean "Before This" as well.
31:54 And that's what actually won the best,
31:56 that's what won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Award.
31:59 - Which was massively controversial.
32:00 'Cause I mean, there's no doubt that "Pass Likes"
32:02 will win the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film
32:04 or film not in English language, rather.
32:07 But I think "Anastomy of Fall" is a great film as well.
32:10 It's a really good film.
32:11 It's quite a cold film.
32:12 It's not a massively emotional film.
32:14 And it's not meant to be an emotional film,
32:15 but it's very good as well.
32:16 It's another excellent, excellent film.
32:18 But I can't see the Oscars following that.
32:21 The Oscars will give it to "Pass Likes"
32:22 because they basically put it up for Best Picture as well.
32:25 So how can it not win Best Foreign Language Film
32:27 when it's up for Best Picture?
32:28 They've already basically said that it is the best film
32:31 out of all of the foreign language films.
32:33 - Any other awards that surprised you on that?
32:35 'Cause I suppose I'm looking through the rest just here,
32:38 as you can probably tell.
32:39 And a lot of them look fairly obvious.
32:41 I thought it was interesting that "Best Original Song"
32:44 had loads of Barbie stuff in,
32:45 'cause I kind of forget how many of those
32:47 were like originally not meant to,
32:49 like weren't songs before Barbie became a thing.
32:52 But the Billie Eilish winning,
32:56 I feel like that's a TikTok thing.
32:58 'Cause it's always TikTok.
32:59 - It's always TikTok.
33:00 She's gonna win the Oscars as well.
33:01 She's already won one Oscar.
33:02 So she's gonna be winning a second Oscar,
33:03 which is quite remarkable.
33:05 I think that the only other one,
33:07 apart from Foreign Language Film,
33:08 which I think was a massive surprise,
33:09 I think Best Animated Film was a huge surprise,
33:12 'cause I've seen all of the films that were nominated.
33:15 So nominators were "The Boy and the Heron," which won it.
33:19 And it was up against "Suzumi," which I adored,
33:23 "Wish," which I think's fine,
33:25 "Spider-Man Across a Spider-Verse,"
33:28 which I thought was absolutely phenomenal.
33:30 "Super Mario," which was the third,
33:33 no, it was the second highest-grossing film of the year.
33:36 Second after "Barbie."
33:38 And the disappointing "Elemental."
33:40 I know that you liked "Elemental" more than me.
33:42 - I liked "Elemental."
33:43 - I was quite surprised with "Boy and the Heron."
33:45 One, it's a Japanese film again,
33:47 although there is an English-language version.
33:49 I would have given it to "Suzumi"
33:50 if you wanted to go down the foreign language route,
33:53 or "Spider-Man."
33:54 But I think "Spider-Man" is part one of two films.
33:56 You know how they're doing these things with "Dune" as well,
33:57 where it very much is part one, like it stops.
34:00 It isn't like you've got a cliffhanger.
34:02 It stops, and it is half of a film.
34:04 And I think it's not gonna get any of the awards,
34:06 'cause I think they're all saying next year
34:08 it'll win every single award for the second part,
34:10 which I think is kind of fair.
34:12 So I think that's maybe why "The Boy and the Heron" won.
34:14 But it's still a lovely film, "The Boy and the Heron."
34:16 It's just a lesser Studio Ghibli film.
34:18 So I think that was, yeah, that was slightly unexpected.
34:22 But like you say, I think most of the awards
34:25 pretty much went to the favorites.
34:27 But it's a bit disappointing when that happens.
34:30 You know, you always want a proper right-sider,
34:31 which did happen, actually, with Ricky Gervais.
34:34 You're right, that was a proper right-sider.
34:36 I think you've got odds for about 50 to one
34:38 for Ricky Gervais to win that.
34:39 I thought that was shocking,
34:40 but he knows all the guys in the Golden Globes,
34:42 doesn't he?
34:43 He's got contacts.
34:44 - I mean, let's be honest,
34:45 his whole speech when he hosted it at that time was hilarious.
34:50 - Oh, it was brilliant.
34:51 No one's gonna say anything other than that.
34:52 It was brilliant, yeah, super.
34:54 And that is what he's good at.
34:55 That's the sort of thing he's good at.
34:57 - And when he used to pick on people
34:58 that could defend themselves,
34:59 that was sometimes a little bit better,
35:00 but hey, I'm not offended by anything he does.
35:03 But Dave, that's pretty much our 36 minutes up,
35:07 and I think people are probably sick of it
35:08 and just go, "Don't care about the Golden Globes,"
35:10 and they've stayed 36 minutes.
35:11 So fair play, thanks very much.
35:13 - And next week, we'll just talk about pure things
35:15 for two hours, 45 minutes.
35:17 - 36.
35:20 Happy New Year.
35:22 - 36 minutes on Twitter.
35:24 Happy New Year.
35:25 Bye.
