Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper continues to wreak havoc on north Queensland with further rainfall expected from Port Douglas to Cape Melville.
Transcript
00:00 Unprecedented rainfall is leading to widespread flooding across North Queensland as ex-tropical
00:05 cyclone Jasper continues to bring the rain to the north.
00:09 It is currently 8.30am Monday morning Queensland time and all the information in this video
00:15 is valid at that point but this is a dynamic and evolving situation so it's a good idea
00:19 to stay up to date throughout the day with the latest information.
00:23 Let's start off with a look at the flood warnings.
00:26 Currently between Ingham and just north of Port Douglas, very significant flooding going
00:30 on this morning including four major flood warnings for these northern rivers.
00:34 The Daintree River here in the far north has experienced record flooding and is still at
00:38 the major flood level.
00:39 The Barron River downstream of the Barron Falls is experiencing major flooding at the
00:44 moment as is the Murray River in here and the Herbert River downstream of Nash's Crossing.
00:50 There are other rivers in North Queensland at minor to moderate flooding at the moment
00:54 but this may change, particularly through the next window of significance which is early
00:59 this afternoon, just after 2pm local time is the next high tide.
01:04 At high tide, river and flood waters cannot drain as effectively as they can at other
01:09 times and that can prolong or even worsen the flooding impact so this afternoon is a
01:14 key time of significance.
01:17 Across the rest of North Queensland we have a wide array of flood watches and there could
01:21 be some flooding through any or all of these areas over the course of the next couple of
01:25 days.
01:26 Severe weather warnings are ongoing around the east coast but we're starting to see that
01:29 area shrink.
01:30 It has now cleared out of Cairns with this heavy rain warning on the east coast from
01:34 Port Douglas up to Cape Melville.
01:37 Further rainfall is expected there today.
01:39 Elsewhere, a significant thunderstorm across the centre of the peninsula is covered by
01:43 a severe thunderstorm warning.
01:45 What are we expecting for the rest of the day?
01:47 Well we'll continue to see a gradual northwards movement of the heaviest rain, that means
01:52 down here in the south, spots like Cairns and Port Douglas will start to see their wet
01:56 weather clear up but further north, Cooktown, Cape Melville, into the far north of Queensland,
02:01 heavy rain likely to continue for much of the day on Monday so we are not done with
02:05 this thing yet.
02:06 I would like to finish with a reminder, if you are in these northern places and you are
02:09 being affected by flood waters, please stay put.
02:13 Do not try and get through the flood waters, that is incredibly dangerous.
02:16 Throughout the day, do stay up to date with the latest information and most importantly
02:19 of all, follow all advice from local emergency management and emergency services.
02:23 We will keep you updated through the day, stay safe everyone.
