00:00 I am not yet defeated.
00:05 Yes you are.
00:09 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at 10 references and easter eggs just
00:13 about every fan spotted in Mortal Kombat 1.
00:17 Steven, this was fantastic, thank you.
00:23 Just like the old days.
00:25 Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:29 Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:34 Havoc Reincarnated.
00:35 You will not have it.
00:39 You don't need it.
00:40 You're dead.
00:41 Speaking of which, you just killed my best friend.
00:44 And I'm not one to forgive and forget.
00:47 Fart.
00:48 One of the very first references you can spot in the campaign is in Johnny Cage's chapter,
00:52 which for the most part is an Indiana Jones reference itself.
00:55 As his on-screen sidekick prepares some explosives, Johnny goes toe to toe with a familiar looking
01:00 corpse.
01:01 Long time Mortal Kombat fans should immediately recognize this corpse as the original iteration
01:06 of Havoc from the days of Deadly Alliance and Deception.
01:10 The difference here is that he is now just a costume used to convey the leader of the
01:14 Kali Ma.
01:15 Wait a second, is that mocap in the background there?
01:17 Johnny, I don't have-
01:19 You're right, not here.
01:21 I'll swing by your office after I change.
01:25 Film fanatic Johnny.
01:26 Get away from her, you bitch.
01:27 Excuse me?
01:28 You know, the movie.
01:34 Havoc's starring role in Johnny's movie isn't the only movie reference in Mortal
01:37 Kombat 1.
01:39 Mr. Cage himself speaks almost exclusively in movie quotes, and for some, it may become
01:44 a bit obnoxious.
01:46 It certainly was for me.
01:48 He'll quote lines from Alien, the James Bond movies, and of course, Indiana Jones.
01:53 If you like that level of fanservice, well, to each their own.
01:56 For us, Johnny needs to take a bit of a chill pill.
02:05 A Foxy Fox reference.
02:14 Johnny did take a chill pill and instead let Kung Lao have this one.
02:18 As many of us know, Nitara is voiced by Megan Fox, who has claimed to be a big Mortal Kombat
02:23 fan, even if it doesn't show in her performance.
02:26 NetherRealm Studios threw in a fun reference to one of her most famous performances, which
02:30 was in the 2009 horror-comedy Jennifer's Body.
02:34 It's on the nose, yes, but it is kind of cute how Nitara plays along with the bit.
02:47 Perfect headwear.
03:00 This one was also a little too on the nose, but we admittedly couldn't help chuckling
03:04 at it.
03:05 At the beginning of Chapter 8, Kenshi, Johnny, Kung Lao, and Ashura grab outfits to disguise
03:10 themselves from Shao Kahn, while Reptile creates a distraction.
03:14 Johnny gives Ashura a hat that looks remarkably similar to the one she wore back in the 3D
03:19 games.
03:20 It isn't the exact same one, no, but Johnny's compliment to her was enough to make us smile
03:24 a bit.
03:28 Glorious gold.
03:37 Shifting focus back to Mr. Cage, the washed-up movie star does hold a neat nod in his mansion.
03:43 On one of his shelves is a small collection of awards, one of them should look familiar
03:47 to MK11 players.
03:49 That is because one of those awards is the same one Johnny holds in one of his outros
03:53 in MK11.
03:54 We almost missed it ourselves with all the focus you have to put on fighting, as well
03:58 as the visual effects and blood splashing everywhere.
04:03 The kids ain't alright.
04:10 This one was too, too funny to ignore.
04:14 One of the most contentious aspects of MKX was the introduction of Cassie Cage, Jackie
04:19 Briggs, Takeda, and Kung Jin, degradingly dubbed the MKX Kids.
04:24 Some fans loved one or two of them, most hated all four of them.
04:28 Netherrealm knew this and brought them back for no more than 10 seconds.
04:32 During the climactic battle in Chapter 15, all four of them descend from the pyramid
04:37 only for them to be killed off in an instant.
04:40 The disrespect was deserved.
04:50 Wanted for stupidity.
04:58 Speaking of characters who absolutely deserve a ton of disrespect, Su Hao once again rears
05:03 his ugly head into another game.
05:05 Thankfully, Netherrealm is still poking fun at his existence.
05:08 Towards the back of Madame Bo's tavern, you can see a poster with an illustration
05:12 of Su Hao drawn on it.
05:14 Whether this is a wanted poster or not is entirely up to you.
05:17 We on the other hand like to believe he is being hunted to this day for his awful mustache,
05:22 and his dumb hat.
05:45 Here we have another Johnny Cage reference, but this one is really cool.
05:50 For his fatal blow, Johnny takes his opponent's face and smashes it into the camera.
05:54 Now busted beyond repair, the camera displays a message at the bottom that reads "Error
05:59 Macro".
06:00 This is the same message that would birth Ermac back in the old days.
06:03 In the third revision of the original Mortal Kombat, this message would appear under certain
06:07 errors associated with Reptile as Ermac.
06:10 However, players mistook this as confirmation of the presence of a secret character.
06:15 Rumors spread, and it would inspire Midway to introduce Ermac.
06:28 B-movie with a D-grade reference.
06:38 They really packed all of the references into Johnny, didn't they?
06:41 In Chapter 5 of the campaign, Baraka escapes Chang-Sung's prison with Kenshi, Johnny,
06:47 and Kung Lao.
06:48 As they look for a way back into Outworld, Johnny remarks that the prison looks like
06:51 the set of a film he was in called The Flesh Pits.
06:54 Well, that is actually the name of the prison, and it has become a key location for the franchise
06:59 since the 2011 reboot.
07:06 Forden Forged Forever.
07:12 Once again, Johnny delivers the fan service, but in all honesty, this was the best one.
07:17 One of his finishing moves sees him put his rival into a snazzy sports car before slamming
07:22 the door through their abdomen.
07:24 As Johnny triggers the car's nitrous, you can hear the high-pitched "Toasty!" we've
07:28 come to know and love.
07:29 It just wouldn't be a Mortal Kombat game if Dan Forden's voice wasn't thrown in
07:33 somewhere.
07:42 Which Easter egg was your favorite in MK1?
