00:00Hey there, welcome to Mojo Plays, my name is Jeffrey.
00:12In today's video I'll be counting down the 10 hardest, most challenging Nintendo
00:16DS games that will really test your dual-screen handheld gaming skills.
00:21The games on this rundown cover a variety of genres, with each one having something
00:25specific in common, you might have guessed it from the title of this video, they are
00:29super duper hard, so let's check them out.
00:40Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:44the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:49Shin Megami Tensai Devil Survivor
00:59If you happen to be looking for a tactical RPG that infuses horror, demons, and the occult
01:05into its story and gameplay, then look no further than Shin Megami Tensai Devil Survivor.
01:10This game demands a lot from its players, your group of protagonists must deal with
01:14hordes of demons during a supernatural infestation amidst a Tokyo lockdown.
01:19As you might imagine from a tactical RPG, patience and skills are needed in equal measure
01:23in order to deal with the challenging and ominous grid-based turn-based battles.
01:28Heck, even outside of battles you need to worry about an in-game clock, which is linked
01:32to many hard-hitting story moments.
01:34It's a rewarding game for those with the tenacity to face its many horrors.
01:47Advance Wars Dual Strike
01:57For many of us, strategy games can often come across as quite impenetrable given the sheer
02:02depth of gameplay that you need to contend with at any given time.
02:06While Advance Wars Dual Strike might have a cartoony facade, its story is often harrowing
02:11and its strategic turn-based gameplay can be downright brutal at times.
02:16Set in Omega Land, the Allied Nations and the Black Hole Army are at each other's
02:20throats, and it's up to you and your squad to quell the chaos.
02:23The DS is actually a perfect place for a strategy game such as this one since more information
02:28equals a better chance at survival.
02:30The top screen highlights specific intelligence related to the map, whereas the bottom screen
02:35is the battle screen.
02:36Managing your troops on the battlefield takes a lot, especially if you want to achieve victory.
02:46Trauma Center Under the Knife
03:01As the old adage goes when talking about challenging things, it's not like it's brain surgery.
03:06Well, in the case of Trauma Center Under the Knife, it basically is, since you will be
03:10up to your ears in surgical cases, all while utilizing the DS's touchscreen and stylus.
03:16Part anime, part simulation, Under the Knife might as well require a full-on medical degree
03:21to get through its beefy campaign.
03:23In this game, a man-made disease known as guilt is being spread about the land, but
03:27you and your medical comrades can help put a stop to it with, as you might have guessed
03:31it, oodles upon oodles of surgery cases.
03:34If you thought the board game operation was stressful, then good luck with Trauma Center
03:38Under the Knife.
03:39It's a real doozy.
03:49Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Grimoire of the Rift
04:07Lost back into the world of Ivalice via a magical book, Luso Clemens must claw and fight
04:12his way back home amidst all manner of battles and monstrosities.
04:16If you didn't already guess from the game's title, Grimoire of the Rift is a tactical
04:20RPG.
04:21Set in a sort of 3D isometric world, Luso and his newfound party of companions need
04:26to strategically battle others via intense and harrowing turn-based battles.
04:30Like many other tactical RPGs, this one also utilizes a grid-based system, which means
04:35unit positioning and placement are critical to success.
04:39You can grow stronger via story quests, side quests, and training missions, but you will
04:43still need to be hyper-prepared in order to achieve victory and make it back home.
05:00Mega Man ZX
05:10It's Mega Man.
05:11Yes, it's super duper challenging.
05:13I mean, come on, what did you expect?
05:15For the uninitiated, ZX is set hundreds of years after the Zero series of games.
05:20In this futuristic world, there's a new robotic threat known as Pseudoroids.
05:24These Pseudoroids are up to no good and must be stopped at all costs.
05:28Your male or female protagonist, either Vent or Aile respectively, must join up with other
05:32guardians to quell the nefarious deeds of the Pseudoroids and their makers.
05:37ZX is a more open-ended affair when compared to previous Mega Man games.
05:41You can choose various missions to take on, where you then get thrust into Metroidvania-esque
05:46levels.
05:47Vent or Aile are quite powerful, even more so when they harness biometal powers.
05:51However, the game still always throws a new challenge your way that needs to be met with
05:55heavy resistance and skill.
06:07Dementium The Ward
06:18The Nintendo DS has pretty slim pickings when it comes to horror games.
06:22Fortunately, the stellar, if incredibly challenging, first-person horror experience Dementium The
06:26Ward came along to fill the void.
06:29Now, I'll be pretty honest and just right up front about this.
06:32Most of the challenge in this game comes from its controls, which, to put it lightly, take
06:36quite a bit of time to get used to.
06:38However, once you do get used to moving your character, aiming, swapping weapons and items,
06:43and exploring the decrepit, derelict, horror festooned stages with the stylus, it's clear
06:48this is a solid horror game all around.
06:51This William, who happens to have amnesia, must survive the fright fest that is this
06:56game's central locale, a creepy hospital brimming with monster-like aberrations.
07:00The puzzles will break your brain, and the monsters will have you running in fear.
07:04Just keep your flashlight on and you should be fine... hopefully.
07:19Eitrian Odyssey
07:21You gotta love a good old-fashioned 3D fantasy-based dungeon crawler, and that's just what you
07:34get with Eitrian Odyssey.
07:36But good golly, this game is downright brutal at times.
07:39Now it may not look like it based on its quirky, sort of cartoony art style, but don't let
07:44that veneer fool you.
07:46Exploring the maze-like Yggdrasil labyrinth, taking part in turn-based battles, finding
07:50oodles of secrets, and growing your cast of characters is a lot of fun, but isn't without
07:54its grind and serious challenge.
07:57One of the more unique aspects of Eitrian Odyssey is that players need to create their
08:00own maps to keep track of the labyrinth by using the stylus.
08:04Now on paper this sounds great, but in practice it's actually quite cumbersome to say the
08:08least.
08:09Add in random enemy encounters and tougher dungeon monsters known as foes, and you get
08:14a game that never really takes it easy on you.
08:21Contra 4
08:28Ah yes, good old Contra, how you love to punish us gamers, thanks.
08:44This 2007 DS iteration of the venerable run-and-gun side-scrolling action game is not for the
08:49faint of heart.
08:51Serving as a prequel to Contra Hardcore and a follow-up to Contra III The Alien Wars,
08:56this fourth outing sees you step into the gruff boots of Bill Riser, Lance Bean, Mad
09:00Dog, and Scorpion.
09:02Contra 4 is a traditional by-the-books 2D action shooter where you must survive a series
09:06of brutal onslaughts set across myriad diverse stages.
09:10While our four heroes do have plentiful weapons and power-ups, including a handy grappling
09:14hook to deal out serious punishment, the arcade-style nature of gameplay will often have you tearing
09:19your hair out in frustration, death after death, restart after restart.
09:33Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
09:46Coming up from GBA's Aria of Sorrow, a truly top-notch Castlevania game I might add,
09:50Dawn of Sorrow once again sees players take on the role of Soma Cruz.
09:55Soma and his companions must quell a new cult who plan to nefariously use Soma to reincarnate
10:00a new Dark Lord in the form of Dracula.
10:03Dawn of Sorrow blends the iconic action platforming and labyrinthian exploration with some stellar
10:08RPG elements to craft the Soma you desire, replete with plentiful weapons, abilities,
10:13skills, and powers.
10:15Soma gains new powers via Soul Absorption after defeating baddies via the Tactical Soul
10:20System.
10:21Interestingly as well, Dawn of Sorrow also uses the DS's touchscreen and stylus to
10:25break magic seals all throughout the castle.
10:28The challenge in this Castlevania outing comes from the tough-as-nails bosses and exploring
10:32the gargantuan castle, one brimming with secrets and spades.
10:46Donkey Kong Jungle Climber
10:47Yep, you heard that right.
11:00The absolute toughest game on the Nintendo DS just so happens to be a Donkey Kong game,
11:05one with the simple subtitle Jungle Climber.
11:08So why the heck is this DK game just so tough?
11:11Well, it mostly comes down to trying to control DK and Diddy via the L and R buttons respectively.
11:17By swapping between or holding each button at certain intervals, our Kongs can grab or
11:22let go of certain pegs and parts of the level in order to clamber and scamper around successfully,
11:27with each Kong spinning wildly between movements.
11:30Now this may not sound all that hard on paper, but in practice it's an exercise in frustration
11:35more often than not.
11:36However, it just takes a really, really long time to get used to if you hope to have any
11:40chance of jungle climbing success.
11:54So do you agree with our picks for this list?
11:56There are plentiful tough-as-nails Nintendo DS games out there.
12:00Which ones have you found to be the most challenging?
12:02Be sure to let us know in the comments, we'd love to hear from you.
