00:00 Hey Rolling Stone Magazine, I'm Rainbow Chan and for In My Room I'm going to be performing
00:05 a set featuring songs from my upcoming album The Bridal Lament which is also a theatrical show.
00:11 These songs are deeply inspired by traditional women's music from Wai-Tao people who were the
00:17 first settlers of Hong Kong and who I had connection to through my mum. You'll hear
00:23 today songs that are inspired by a ritual called the Bridal Lament where women wept and sang these
00:30 songs, these ancient songs for three days and three nights in front of family and friends
00:35 before entering into her arranged marriage and these songs was a way for women to say goodbye
00:42 to their family, their home and their identity as they knew it before becoming someone's wife.
00:48 I've been relearning these songs which are on the brink of disappearance from community elders in
00:54 Hong Kong for the last five years and this album is a reimagining of these old melodies but injecting
01:01 it with my own modern interpretation. So you'll be hearing Fish Song, Bird Song, Under the Laurel Tree
01:08 and Seven Sisters which is the new single that I've released and I hope you enjoy the set and
01:15 welcome to my room.
