00:00 There is a lady who has been with us previously and she's into organic fruits now, selling
00:18 this organic stuff, that organic stuff.
00:22 If you go to her Facebook page or profile, you'll find only two things.
00:30 One, things about the organic fruits that she sells, I suppose, or distributes.
00:42 And secondly, pics of her kids and very fond descriptions of what the kids are doing and
00:53 this and that.
00:58 There are two or three kids, I suppose, at least two are there.
01:06 That's how we live.
01:08 This graphic clearly shows the impact of various activities on climate change.
01:23 What are those various activities?
01:26 Going car free, activity one.
01:31 Two, avoiding one transatlantic flight.
01:36 Third, choosing green energy.
01:40 Fourth, switching from electric car to car free.
01:44 Fifth, choosing a vegan diet.
01:49 Then replacing typical car with hybrid.
01:53 Then washing clothes in cold water rather than hot water.
01:58 Then recycling.
02:00 Then hang dry clothes.
02:04 Then upgrading to energy-efficient light bulbs.
02:11 And the title of the graphic is tons of CO2 equivalent saved per year for one person undertaking
02:17 each action.
02:19 And if I sum up the tons of CO2 equivalent that are saved from these ten actions, it
02:30 comes up to hardly ten tons of CO2 equivalent even if I combine all these ten activities.
02:47 It is not even ten, it is around eight.
02:57 So combine these ten activities and all that you save is eight tons of CO2 equivalent.
03:08 But all these ten activities are so popular.
03:13 All the do-gooders are busy doing all these ten activities and they walk around with great
03:20 missionary zeal and even greater missionary pride.
03:27 You know, we are trying for a clean world and green world.
03:33 We are the do-gooders.
03:39 We are responsible citizens.
03:41 We are trying to save the earth from annihilation.
03:44 We are doing all these ten things to make the earth livable.
03:50 And how much do you save?
03:55 Even if you do all these ten things, eight tons of CO2 and then there is this huge bar
04:03 that corresponds to around 60 tons of CO2 which comes from doing a single action which
04:15 is having one child.
04:19 We will not talk about that because this is where the ego lives.
04:25 This is where the physical bodily tendencies live.
04:35 The great elephant in the room will not be talked about.
04:41 We will talk about killing cockroaches in the room.
04:44 We will say, "Oh, there are mosquitoes in the room.
04:49 Oh, there is a lizard as well.
04:53 And do you see those cockroaches hiding behind the almirah?
05:00 And do I sense that the wood has termite?
05:07 Let's remove all of this.
05:08 They are occupying the room but we do not talk about the elephant in the room.
05:15 That's how do-gooders live.
05:20 Let's plant two trees.
05:25 Baby now that you are pregnant, let's go and plant one more tree.
05:35 This is in the name of our would-be baby.
05:42 How we want to hide our complicity in the great crime of killing this planet?
05:51 By doing all those little, little good things.
05:57 In fact, doing those good things is a great indicator that you are doing some great evil
06:05 that you want to hide by doing some little good things.
06:15 So all the elites living in the posh colonies and having a greatly big carbon footprint
06:31 would be at the forefront of a tree plantation drive.
06:41 Mrs. Mittal would get down from her swanky Mercedes and plant a tree and say, "Now let's
06:53 see how climate change occurs."
06:58 And after planting the sapling, she would get back into the swanky Mercedes and feel
07:08 proud that she has done something for environmental conservation.
07:21 All the liberal girls of Delhi University and JNU would say, "You know, let's not use
07:34 crackers, let's not use polythene, let's recycle, let's bicycle."
07:51 But ask them, "Are you prepared to go childless?"
07:54 "No, no, no, no, no, no, if that means 60 tons of CO2 per year, so be it.
08:05 I'm not going to fight against my hormones, my uterus and my body.
08:12 That is something I'm not going to do.
08:15 But otherwise I must be seen as very, very progressive and liberal and earth loving and
08:20 green.
08:23 I must be seen as quite green.
08:26 But the one thing that is needed, really needed, that I will not commit myself to.
08:33 The elephant in the room will not be addressed.
08:39 About everything else I will be liberal, very progressive.
08:51 I will say, "Let's do carpooling, let's do carpooling."
08:56 Even when I'm going to the maternity ward, I will use the pooled car.
09:03 But going to the maternity ward is something that I would not compromise on.
09:09 At best I will use an electric car to go to the hospital.
09:17 See how green I am.
09:21 That's how we live, Gautam.
09:28 Working in a firm that is denuding the earth.
09:32 We work for 10 hours a day in a firm that is directly or indirectly denuding the earth,
09:42 cutting down forests and I assure you there is hardly any firm, any company that is not
09:51 complicit in global warming.
09:57 There is hardly any aspect of human business, international markets, production, distribution,
10:10 logistics, shipping, marketing that does not contribute to climate change.
10:18 So you work in those firms throughout the day and then you come back and devote two
10:23 hours a week to running a community garden and then you want to absolve yourself of the
10:31 guilt, you want to give yourself a clean chit.
10:38 This goes out to all the do-gooders who think that by donating two hours of their week to
10:47 some green NGO, they will be able to wash the blood off their hands.
10:51 You will not be able to wash the blood off your hands.
10:57 You are killers, you are criminals.
11:02 And on top of that you pretend to be lovers of the planet.
11:07 You pretend to be pro-life, progressive and liberal.
11:10 You are not.
