The Pavement Pounder was a HOT ROD project back in the mid-â90s. It was a â57 Chevy built by staffer Cole Quinnell and ran a 557ci rat motor with all the bells and whistles. It went on the 1998 Power Tour and eventually followed Cole when me moved back to Detroit to take a job with Chrysler. Like so many projects

00:00 Hi, this is Cole Quinnell and we're digging into the pavement pounder getting it ready
00:09 to come back out on power tour.
00:12 We've got quite a few things to take care of.
00:13 We've got to take a look at the cooling system, clean out the radiator, put a good electric
00:18 fan on it.
00:19 We've got a lot of other maintenance things that we need to look at on the car.
00:23 But there were two things wrong with the car when we parked it ten years ago.
00:26 One thing is that the gas tank was leaking, so we need to take care of that.
00:30 The other thing was some sort of valve train noise.
00:32 We pulled the valve covers off to see if we could find a broken valve spring or something
00:36 like that.
00:37 Unfortunately, we didn't find something easy to spot, easy to see up top there.
00:42 So it's time to take the engine out.
00:45 We're going to take the engine over to Kurt Urban Performance.
00:48 He's going to tear down the engine and we're going to look through everything and see what
00:51 we can find that was broken on it that was causing the noise.
00:55 But also look at all the wear that's happened in this car.
00:58 This engine made 900 horsepower on a single four barrel, which is pretty good for an engine
01:01 built 15 years ago.
01:03 This engine was dyno tested.
01:04 It was drag raced.
01:05 We used nitrous on it.
01:07 And then we drove it on the 1998 Power Tour.
01:10 So we're going to go through, replace what we need to, rebuild things, and get this car
01:14 ready to come back out on Power Tour.
