00:00 The reason Dolly Parton called Sylvester Stallone an ungrateful son of a bitch.
00:04 A role in 1984's Rhinestone might have scored Dolly Parton two top ten country hits, but
00:10 her appearance in the musical comedy film alongside Sylvester Stallone didn't save
00:14 it from commercial failure.
00:15 While it was universally panned, Parton's time on set was enjoyable, and she and Stallone
00:19 became great friends.
00:21 That being said, there was a brief moment they weren't.
00:23 While shooting an alleyway scene through a cold night, Parton and Stallone were warmed
00:27 by heaters and blankets on set.
00:29 But Parton noticed a man shivering next to some bins, instantly grabbing one of her shawls
00:33 to wrap around him.
00:34 In her autobiography, Dolly, My Life and Other Unfinished Business, she recalled Stallone
00:39 stopping her.
00:40 "Just as I wrapped the shawl around the man, Stallone walked up and jerked it away," she
00:43 wrote.
00:44 "Don't you put that good shawl over that scum," he said.
00:46 "He could have made something of himself.
00:48 We did."
00:49 Parton, feigned for her Southern pragmatism and work ethic, took Stallone to task for
00:53 it.
00:54 After grabbing the shawl back, she stood nose to nose with him, saying, "That could have
00:58 been you, you ungrateful son of a bitch, except by the grace of God.
01:02 Who knows, it could be an angel sent to show you what you really are."
01:05 Stallone was said to have rectified things the next day, and a crew member let Parton
01:09 know he bought the man a blanket by way of an apology.
01:12 Stallone, who already had great chemistry with Parton, seemed to respect her more for
01:16 her no-nonsense approach.
01:17 The actor described her as an "incredible woman" in a Q&A with Ain't It Cool News
01:22 when he recalled another time she'd given him such advice.
01:25 "I remember in the early '80s when I was sitting in a hotel room feeling sorry for
01:28 myself.
01:29 Actors do that a lot.
01:30 It's actually considered a sport in Hollywood.
01:33 Self-loathing," he said.
01:34 "Anyway," she called, and we began a conversation that lasted at least two hours, and by the
01:39 time I hung up, I thought she was the most amazing person I'd ever spoken to.
01:43 Parton forgave his misstep on set and echoed his sentiments in her book, writing that no
01:47 matter how big a financial disaster Rhinestone was, it was not all bad for her.
01:52 Sylvester Stallone made me laugh at a time when I really needed it.
01:55 "I have found no therapy more effective than laughing, although in this case, there
01:59 were probably less expensive ways to get it," she joked.
02:02 "Movies may come and go, but life is something we buy a ticket to every day, and it doesn't
02:06 come with popcorn," she wrote.
02:07 "To me, Stallone was better than popcorn.
02:10 He was full of life and very healthy for me to be around."
02:13 Dolly Parton does not regret never being a mother.
02:15 The country music icon has been married to her husband, Carl Dean, for more than half
02:19 a century and is at peace with not having kids because of the cherry work she does with
02:23 youngsters.
02:24 Dolly told You magazine, "I'm almost kind of glad.
02:27 I look now at all the work I do with children, and I think, 'God didn't let me have children
02:31 so everybody's children could be mine.'
02:33 We're able to be generous.
02:35 We can do more for one another."
02:36 The singer explained last month that she felt relief that she did not have to bring up children
02:40 in the modern world.
02:42 Dolly told Mojo magazine, "It seems like we're not making any progress.
02:45 Nobody's willing to listen to anybody else.
02:47 Everything is out there.
02:49 Kids know everything.
02:50 They see everything.
02:51 They hear everything.
02:52 We have to discuss stuff.
