00:00 Idaho murders suspect Brian Koberger's aunt
00:02 says she believes he will be found guilty at trial
00:04 and his family is trying to distance themselves
00:06 from the horrifying case.
00:08 The declaration provided to the US son
00:10 comes nine months after Koberger's attorney
00:12 waived his right to a speedy trial.
00:14 Canceling his court date of October,
00:16 now slated for next year at the earliest,
00:18 the trial is at the forefront of Koberger's family's minds,
00:21 including those on his father's side who live in Las Vegas.
00:24 The tabloid recently traveled to speak with those relatives,
00:27 successfully finding one who wished to remain anonymous,
00:30 but expressed doubt over his innocence.
00:32 Brian Koberger's aunt has reportedly aired her belief
00:35 that her nephew will be found guilty
00:36 at his highly anticipated trial
00:38 for allegedly brutally stabbing four University of Idaho
00:41 students to death as they slept.
00:43 The declaration provided to the US son
00:45 comes nine months after Koberger's defense attorney
00:48 waived his right to a speedy trial,
00:50 canceling his previously planned trial date of October 2.
00:53 Now slated for next year at the earliest,
00:55 the trial is at the forefront of Koberger's family's minds,
00:58 including those on his father's side
00:59 who for the most part live in Las Vegas.
01:01 Tabloid recently traveled to the city
01:03 to speak with those relatives,
01:05 successfully finding one who wished to remain anonymous,
01:08 but expressed doubt over the 28-year-old's innocence.
01:11 Speaking to the publication,
01:12 the woman described how she has struggled
01:14 to watch the news as of late,
01:16 citing her increasing belief Koberger committed the murders.
01:19 "When I saw it on TV, I was just lost for words,"
01:22 she told the paper in person,
01:24 adding that she has been left speechless
01:25 as new details in the case continue to emerge.
01:28 "It's heartbreaking. I'm a very caring person."
01:30 The outlet noted how she appeared visibly upset
01:33 during the interview,
01:34 which came as other relatives called the case surreal
01:37 while reportedly trying to distance themselves.
01:39 "And when I saw the news a little bit today
01:41 in the living room," the aunt added,
01:42 "I couldn't take it.
01:43 Hearing about them being knifed, I had goosebumps.
01:46 I just cried."
01:47 The term them, of course,
01:48 referred to the four murdered that fateful night,
01:51 21-year-old Madison Mogan, Kaylee Goncalves, also 21,
01:55 and 20-year-olds Santa Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.
01:58 Prosecutors in the gem state
02:00 are looking to prove Koberger broke
02:02 into the group's shared home
02:03 in the early hours of November 13
02:05 before savagely murdering them and fleeing the scene,
02:08 airing her belief that her nephew might still kill himself.
02:10 The unnamed aunt told The Sun
02:12 that she will likely not watch the trial
02:14 if things get that far,
02:15 and if cameras are even allowed in the courtroom.
02:17 She also said she wants to know the answers to questions
02:20 still surrounding the murders,
02:22 such as her nephew's prospective motive
02:24 if he did carry out the murders
02:25 and what he may have done with the murder weapon.
02:28 When asked if she thought Koberger will be found guilty
02:30 during what's set to be an at least six-week trial,
02:33 she said, "I think so.
02:34 I just want the truth."
02:36 She added, "I would like to see him or write to him
02:38 and find out what happened."
02:39 Koberger, meanwhile, has maintained his innocence
02:42 in the case, and due to a sprawling gag order,
02:44 few details have emerged.
02:46 His aunt, however, provided insight
02:48 into his life before the killing,
02:49 describing the suspected killer as humble and quiet.
02:52 She recalled, "I didn't see any violence in him,"
02:55 before mentioning some odd behavior
02:56 she noticed on his part in recent years.
02:58 She, after having migrated from the East Coast
03:01 while Koberger parents Michael and Marian
03:03 and his three siblings remained in Pennsylvania, confided,
03:06 "I flew Brian and his family out here a few times.
03:09 Once, I told Brian I would show him all around Vegas,"
03:12 she went on, "but the odd thing was he stayed in the house."
03:14 She proceeded to tell the paper
03:16 how she believed her nephew's behavior
03:17 was a result of drugs he may have been taking at the time,
03:20 as well as a lot of drama going on between the family,
03:23 which she said cannot be revealed for legal reasons.
03:25 She did, however, say the family was devastated
03:28 over the case and the criminology student's arrest,
03:30 after which Koberger chose to stand silent
03:33 in lieu of entering a not guilty plea,
03:35 which was then entered on his behalf.
03:37 Also elaborated on was Koberger's
03:39 currently shrouded childhood,
03:40 during which the woman said,
03:42 "The then teen was noticeable shy and troubled."
03:45 She also said that at the time,
03:46 the suspect suffered from depression to the point
03:48 where he was allegedly put on medication,
03:51 though she admitted she did not know
03:52 if that was entirely true or what drugs he had been on.
03:55 She quickly added,
03:56 "But if you're not on the right medication,
03:58 you could be triggered.
03:59 I think he may have snapped."
04:00 When asked why he was depressed, she said,
04:02 "I don't have an answer," adding,
04:04 "I guarantee he had a wonderful childhood."
04:06 She continued, "Michael, his dad, is a wonderful man.
04:09 He was a janitor and his wife is a beautiful woman.
04:12 She's a teacher and they worked at the same school.
04:14 Conceding her nephew is not well.
04:16 She said that her heart goes out to the victim's families
04:19 due to the pronounced pain they are likely facing.
04:22 Prosecutors, meanwhile, claim in court documents
04:24 that a DNA sample taken from the crime scene
04:26 is a near match from a sample from Koberger,
04:29 who was arrested this past December
04:30 after being tracked down to his family's home
04:32 in the Poconos.
04:33 Currently in custody,
04:35 Koberger was pictured wearing a suicide prevention vest
04:38 while being held at the Monroe County Correctional Facility
04:41 following his initial arrest,
04:42 while his lawyer maintains his innocence.
04:44 Police had to work backwards from the DNA sample
04:46 to build a profile of hundreds, if not thousands,
04:49 of people who could have matched it
04:50 before honing in on Koberger,
04:52 who was living near the murder scene at the time
04:54 and had the same car as witnesses had seen.
04:56 One of the surviving roommates who was not attacked
04:58 also said she saw the killer and that he had bushy eyebrows,
05:02 another feature of Koberger's appearance.
05:04 Koberger isn't claiming to be in any specific location
05:07 at any specific time, according to the document,
05:10 and may have witnesses who can corroborate
05:12 that he wasn't at the home where the students were killed.
05:14 His defense team has gone over transcripts
05:16 of grand jury testimony
05:17 and other evidence from the investigation,
05:19 thought it is too soon to detail
05:21 exactly who those witnesses might be
05:23 and what they might be able to testify about.
05:25 A new date for the trial has yet to be set.
