00:00 Prince Philip lived a memorable life before his death in April at age 99, including becoming
00:15 the longest-serving British consort.
00:21 But a new book reveals the royal once admitted he didn't want to live that long.
00:25 "I certainly don't want to hang on until I am a hundred like Queen Elizabeth, the Queen
00:30 Mother," Prince Philip once told his longtime biographer Giles Brandearth, who knew him
00:35 for more than four decades, according to Philip, the final portrait.
00:41 "I can't imagine anything worse.
00:45 I am already falling to pieces as it is.
00:48 Bits keep dropping off.
00:53 I have absolutely no desire to cling on to life unnecessarily."
00:57 Gastly prospect, pulling from his many conversations with Prince Philip over the years, as well
01:02 as numerous interviews with other royal sources, Brandearth revised and updated his 2004 book
01:08 Philip and Elizabeth.
01:10 Portrait of a Marriage to present an expansive and authoritative portrait of the Duke of
01:14 Edinburgh and his 73-year marriage to Queen Elizabeth.
01:22 He was more thoughtful and much kinder than the common caricature of him would suggest,
01:26 writes Brandearth in the book's introduction.
01:33 Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, later HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, 19 November 1947.
01:41 "It was a great privilege to know the Duke over so many years and remarkable to be given
01:48 special access and help in writing his life story," said Brandearth a statement.
01:55 "It is an extraordinary story and unexpected in so many ways.
02:01 He saw an early draft of my book and made some factual corrections, as well as a few
02:05 caustic comments.
02:07 He did not see the final version, but I hope it does him justice.
02:15 I have not held anything back."
02:17 While Queen Elizabeth, 95, is always careful with her words, her husband became well-known
02:22 for his off-the-cuff, candid manner.
02:29 He had many such moments with Brandearth, which are recounted in the book, including
02:33 times when he reflected back on his life.
02:37 "There were times when I felt quite close to Prince Philip, like a proper friend, or
02:44 as much a friend as you can be with a man who is 30 years your senior and the husband
02:48 of the head of state," writes Brandearth in Philip, setting the scene.
02:56 Sitting alone with him in his library at Buckingham Palace, sharing a drink, he was the best company.
03:02 Completely unstuffy, easy to talk to, and happy to talk about anything.
03:10 Has it been fun?
03:11 Brandearth remembers asking Prince Philip.
03:13 "Philip, the final portrait fun?"
03:16 Prince Philip snorted in response, according to the book.
03:20 "I don't think I think much about fun.
03:25 Do you think much about fun?
03:27 Yes," Brandearth said.
03:30 "Now and again, really?
03:33 I suppose the polo was fun," Prince Philip admitted.
03:37 "Playing cricket was fun, in the old days.
03:44 The carriage driving is fun, when you don't fall off the box seat.
03:48 Then it's just bloody painful."
03:53 When pressed, Prince Philip admitted that he enjoyed flying, had also wondered if he
03:57 should have joined the Air Force instead of the Navy.
04:04 Prince Philip was an officer in the British Navy until King George VI's unexpected death
04:09 in 1952, which made then-Princess Elizabeth the Monarch and Prince Philip her consort.
04:19 But the royal resisted the idea of regretting past decisions.
04:23 "Regrets are a waste of energy," he told Brandearth.
04:28 "There's no point in having regrets," asked Brandearth.
04:33 Has it been a good life?
04:34 Worthwhile?
04:35 "I don't know," said Prince Philip with a shrug.
04:40 "I've kept myself busy, I've tried to make myself useful.
04:45 I hope I've helped keep the show on the road.
04:51 That's about it, really."
04:53 Prince Philip was being humble, of course.
04:55 In addition to serving as rock and sounding board to the Queen across her decades on the
04:59 throne, he established the Duke of Edinburgh's Award to honour young people from communities
05:04 around the world.
05:09 At home he was a force behind modernising.
05:12 Queen Elizabeth biographer Sally Bedell Smith told People in April.
05:20 He was the one who discovered the potential of television and actually tutored Elizabeth
05:24 on how to read a teleprompter before her first, televised, Christmas speech, in 1957.
05:34 Up until then the courtiers were suspicious of him.
05:37 His challenge was to find something useful he could do without stepping on her toes or
05:41 somebody else's toes.
05:47 Giles Brandearth during a chat in Prince Philip's library.
05:50 He and Brandearth also talked about death.
05:54 "I am quite ready to die," the Duke of Edinburgh told the author.
05:59 "It's what happens, sooner or later."
06:06 When his time finally came at the age of 99, Brandearth believes Prince Philip was content.
06:13 "I think that when he died, he died happy.
06:17 In the last 10 years of his life, he seemed a more settled soul than once upon a time,"
06:23 Brandearth writes.

06:28 Prince Philip's funeral.
06:30 Tearful moments as Queen Elizabeth sits alone and William and Harry come together he could
06:34 still be cantankerous and tetchy.
06:37 He was willful and contrary to the last.
06:39 But, overall, he appeared to me to be more contented late in life than he had been in
06:44 middle age, more at ease with himself, with his family, and with the world," he continues.
06:51 "I believe he recognized, finally, that people recognized his contribution and, though he
06:58 made light of it, that pleased him very much."
07:05 The person who always saw Prince Philip's strengths, and appreciated his contributions,
07:10 was Queen Elizabeth.
07:15 While celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, she gave a heartfelt tribute to her longtime
07:20 partner.
07:22 "He is someone who doesn't take easily to compliments, but he has quite simply been
07:29 my strength and stay all these years," she said, "and I owe him a debt greater than he
07:37 would ever claim.
