00:55 - We said we had to buy and build cars
00:56 for less than 3,000 bucks, and mine's way below that.

01:07 - So we went and secretly bought cars.

01:15 - Sadly, they didn't disguise the roofline,
01:17 so it's a Mazda RX-7.

01:25 This is an '84, first year that you could get a 13A

06:16 but he really has not met LaFonda just yet.

06:26 And I was sandbagging.
06:27 There's stuff in the trunk.

06:34 There's a dirt scooter muffler sitting inside of this car.
06:40 So I'm gonna cut the exhaust off and weld that thing off.
06:43 So I wanted to knock the big dirt off of this thing.
06:52 And I went through one of those drive-through car washes.
06:54 Only then did I realize the windows
06:56 don't go all the way up on this thing.
06:57 I'm soaked and the interior is flooded.

07:03 That was not worth it.
07:09 Don't need that anymore.
07:10 Checked all the brakes.
07:14 I'm gonna get new pads for it
07:15 and put them on in the pits at the race.
07:17 And I really am interested to see how much oil
07:19 is in the transmission because it shifts pretty crunchy.
07:23 I had to neck down the motorcycle muffler,
07:27 one, two, three sizes before I could connect it
07:30 to the original exhaust on the car.
07:32 All right, LaFonda, let's see what you got.

07:39 It's really not that much different,
07:44 but somehow it's funnier because it's motorcycle parts.
07:47 Finnegan keeps saying spinning Dorito.
07:49 Here's why.
07:50 The rotors inside the rotary engine
07:53 are shaped like a triangle.
07:55 This sticker shows what the shape of that rotor looks like.
07:58 And a lot of people like to call it a Dorito
08:00 just because it's triangular.
08:02 I can't really make more horsepower,
08:03 so I'm trying to make the car lighter
08:04 by getting rid of unnecessary safety items.

08:14 Looks like it's had its teeth knocked out,

08:18 There's another 15 pounds.
08:20 Remember how I said my transmission shifts a little crunchy?

08:27 I'm not too worried about it, but it's not good.
08:33 So our plan is to race these things
08:34 at the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational,
08:37 but that's in Las Vegas.

08:45 This morning, I went to a hand wash,
08:53 got the car cleaned, and once I saw it clean,
08:55 I felt guilty about how little effort
08:57 I actually put into making it a show car

10:25 We took a nice cruise on a little segment of Route 66,
10:30 but now the Honda apparently is running like garbage.
10:33 - I believe we've covered about 140-ish miles
10:36 already today. - I think you're being generous.
10:37 - LaFonda is popping and farting.
10:39 She's gaseous.
10:40 So we're gonna put a new battery in it
10:42 and then go as far as we can before it gets dark.

10:54 - My e-brake is stuck.
10:56 I think it's broke.

11:28 - His battery has been dying so bad
11:36 that we don't wanna kill it even more using the headlights.
11:39 And so we're gonna have to go to the tried and true.

11:53 - If I don't suffocate on smoke,
12:00 I'm gonna attempt to coast to that next exit.
12:03 I think I just blew the motor up in La Fonda.
12:06 - Sadly, La Fonda's heart beats no more.
12:10 Coming down the hill into Prim, Nevada,
12:12 just 50 miles from Vegas,
12:14 we pretty much kicked the rods out of her
12:16 and she's DOA on the side of the road.
12:19 - Dude, that thing blew so much smoke, I couldn't even see.
12:22 - Just started running her up
12:23 and then boom, smoke everywhere.
12:25 - It was a big smoke show.
12:27 - It's unhappy.
12:30 I think this is seized up pretty good.
12:33 - So we need to get an LS engine in it
12:34 by day after tomorrow?
12:35 Man, if it's gonna be blown up,
12:37 I kinda want a hole in the block.
12:39 - I shut it off and I imagine if I had left it running
12:41 all the way down this hill,
12:42 we would've had a hole in the block.
12:45 But I'm looking at this not as failure,
12:47 but as an opportunity to succeed
12:49 because the internet is full of used engines
12:51 and we have this much time to swap a new heart
12:56 into that Honda and still make it
12:58 to the Optum event Saturday.
13:01 That's what we're gonna do, after beers and sleep.
13:03 - It's five days later,
13:11 we've been at SEMA doing our thing
13:13 and the Honda did not heal itself,
13:14 but we did rescue it from the side of the road
13:16 and we made a post on Facebook
13:18 throwing out a lifeline to all of our fans going,
13:20 "Help, what do we do because we're clueless?"
13:22 And fortunately, we got Joel here to give us some space
13:25 in his garage right here at the Speedway
13:27 and Brian from Hassport showed up
13:29 with an engine for the Honda,
13:31 but there's a downside.
13:32 Finnegan told him that this was a CVCC engine,
13:35 which is different than the 1200 that's in here.
13:37 And so we actually have a 1500 to put in it
13:40 and a 1200 to take out
13:41 and they're not exactly the same,
13:43 so we're gonna have a night.
13:43 - Yeah, they're not really the same.
13:45 As a matter of fact, this has two mounts underneath,
13:48 plus it uses two torque rods.
13:50 This car is physically an inch and a half shorter,
13:53 the subframe's even smaller.
13:55 There's only one mount in the front,
13:57 a torque rod in the back and a mount on the left side.
14:00 - So we're gonna have some fabrication to do
14:01 and we're gonna get started on it
14:03 because Finnegan is still out at the SEMA show
14:05 signing autographs, doing his thing.
14:07 We need to get this thing done like tonight
14:09 in order to get ready for the Optima Challenge
14:11 first thing in the morning.
14:12 The driver's meeting's at 8.30,
14:13 I wanna have the car running and driving by then.

14:24 almost everything is disconnected
14:26 and we've gotta lift the engine up
14:27 so that we can drop a crossmember out from under it,
14:29 disconnect the shift linkage
14:30 and then the whole garbage should come out.

14:37 because I'm just dirty enough
14:39 to give the illusion of working
14:41 but in fact we've got other Brian here now,
14:42 we've got TJ here now,
14:43 we have a total of six people cramming on this thing
14:46 and Finnegan's not even here yet.

15:17 motor mounts are different, small things like that.

16:05 This goes on the transmission on the bottom,
16:08 allows you to set the motor on the subframe.

16:11 The mount on the tank belt side is the same,
16:13 so you should just be able to bolt it on, be good to go.
16:15 The old torque rod attached right here
16:17 and went back to the firewall.
16:18 The new one attaches right here,
16:20 considerably further back behind the motor.
16:22 You're gonna have to shorten this up
16:24 so that it goes from here to the firewall,
16:26 'cause the firewall's probably literally that far away.
16:28 The exhaust, it's on the front on this engine,
16:30 this cross-flow head, this side,
16:32 it comes out underneath the manifold in the back.
16:34 The alternator hangs out in the front quite a bit,
16:36 but probably not gonna be a big deal.
16:39 - Oh, this doesn't sound so bad.

17:52 one of which is exhaust, which he's putting on right now.

18:03 And once that's done, I think we're ready to turn the key
18:04 and find out if it fires up.

26:22 but you can come to the invitational anyway."

26:41 - It's day two of the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational.
26:46 Earlier today, I took the orientation run
26:49 around the track in the Mazda.
26:51 And that's when everybody is just single file,
26:53 lead and follow, learning the lines at a slow pace.
26:56 And I couldn't keep up.
26:58 I was racing, everybody else was cruising.
27:01 But because of that,
27:02 I didn't want to be a speed bump out there
27:03 for these guys who are looking for a real time
27:05 at the final event of the year.
27:07 So we're spectators at this point.
27:09 - I kind of want to drive my car.
27:11 Can we go somewhere where we can drive without shame?

27:15 Is we can race those things on the street anywhere
