00:00 This time we go to drag weekend,
00:01 we spend money we don't have on a truck
00:03 that doesn't deserve it to go slower
00:04 than we really want to do.
00:06 - And Finnegan wears a dress.
00:07 It's drag weekend, right?
00:09 - Maybe.
00:10 (engine revving)
00:13 (gunshots)
00:15 (tires screeching)
00:16 (upbeat music)
00:19 (upbeat music)
00:21 (upbeat music)
00:24 (upbeat music)
00:26 (upbeat music)
00:31 (upbeat music)
00:36 (engine revving)
00:42 (upbeat music)
00:45 (engine revving)
00:52 - Oh, guys, this is slow.
00:54 - Oh, come on, give it 4,000 RPM.
00:56 This is good.
00:57 - This is slow.
00:58 - Nah, that's a 15.30.
01:00 - So that's an 18 second pass?
01:05 (laughing)
01:06 - Runs 10s in the eighth mile.
01:08 - Hey, dude, 14.10 at 96.
01:13 - What?
01:14 - Yeah.
01:15 - Let's take the air cleaner off.
01:15 We're going into the 13s.
01:16 - We're going into the 13s.
01:17 Wow, we were not giving this enough credit.
01:20 This is virtually 10s.
01:21 See, 14.10.
01:23 (laughing)
01:25 So our plan here is to take the Mazda Rati,
01:28 our old powered rear engine Mazda pickup,
01:31 and compete at Hot Rod's drag weekend event.
01:35 Now, the deal here is three drag races in three days
01:39 at two different tracks with a road trip
01:41 back and forth between them.
01:42 We know that we know how to road trip.
01:44 We're pretty sure we know how to drag race,
01:47 and we're pretty sure that the Mazda does not run 10s
01:50 in the quarter mile no matter what we were told
01:53 by the guy we bought it from.
01:54 But in this episode, we're going to give it our best shot.
01:58 - 'Cause I think we can tweak it into a 1390 right now.
02:01 - Yes.
02:02 - Just by fiddling with stuff.
02:03 - Oh yeah.
02:04 - And then we have cylinder heads, camshaft,
02:06 intake manifold, different carburetor, and of course, nitrous.
02:11 - None of which we know actually fits on this motor.
02:13 - Right?
02:14 - We'll give it a try.
02:15 - We're taking all this beauty off of the truck right now
02:19 because these scoops have got to be aerodynamic drag, right?
02:23 - Yes.
02:24 - Man, I feel kind of bad.
02:25 This was hard.
02:27 We're going to block off the grill
02:28 because the engine's in the back and so is the radiator.
02:30 This is just blowing into a massive pocket of emptiness,
02:34 which is not helping our aerodynamic situation at all.
02:38 - Let's go 13s at over a hundred miles an hour right now.
02:41 (engine revving)
02:46 (tires screeching)
02:48 - Oh, look at it burn the tires.
02:52 - Come on girl.
02:53 - Oh, it feels faster.
02:55 Definitely feels faster.
02:58 - Woo hoo hoo, go baby, go.
03:01 - 1358 at 102.
03:07 I'm stoked now.
03:08 I thought this was going to be an utter failure.
03:10 This is cool.
03:11 - How'd it go?
03:13 - Oh, it's fast.
03:14 - What do you think it ran?
03:15 - Oh, it's well over a hundred
03:16 'cause it's squirrely up there now.
03:19 - 1358 at 102.
03:21 - Really?
03:22 - Yep.
03:23 We knocked more than half a second off of it.
03:25 - And there's more there 'cause I was trying to cut a light
03:28 and I didn't pay attention to where I left at
03:30 and I could give it more RPM off the line.
03:32 - Yeah.
03:33 - I've never been so excited over a 13 second pass.
03:35 - I know.
03:36 - I mean, I'm still disappointed in mankind, you know.
03:39 - That it's not 10s.
03:40 - We did have a guy, he lied to us.
03:41 Like, looked us in the eye and lied to us.
03:44 - I thought we were well over that by now.
03:46 - Okay, I'm over it now.
03:47 - Okay.
03:48 I realized we weren't giving that cellar a fair shake
03:51 'cause the reason it wasn't running 10s
03:52 or doing wheelies was obviously traction, right?
03:55 - Obviously.
03:56 - So.
03:56 - He must've had slicks on this before.
03:58 - Yeah.
03:59 - Drag radial, sticky.
04:01 Proper break-in procedure, not happening.
04:03 - Guys just prepped the track
04:05 and we're going to go out there and make another pass.
04:07 I'm going to shift earlier
04:08 because we're going well past peak power right now.
04:11 - Look at the glue.
04:14 - See?
04:15 Losing.
04:16 Oh!
04:17 (laughing)
04:19 Okay, we're good.
04:20 I predict we're going to go quicker and faster.
04:23 Take that to the bank.
04:26 - Yeah!
04:31 Oh yeah, that's way better.
04:33 - That was good.
04:35 We got this now.
04:37 - Come on.
04:38 - 1440 something.
04:38 - Go, go, go!
04:39 We're in high gear way sooner than we were before.
04:42 (engine revving)
04:44 There you go.
04:46 1342, best of the day.
04:48 - I don't know if we're setting records,
04:50 but it felt good.
04:51 - We're done for the day
04:58 because we've kind of done all we can do
05:00 without any speed parts.
05:01 We tuned this thing up as best we could,
05:03 threw some tips and tricks at it
05:04 and some drag radials and ran 1342
05:06 at almost 102 miles an hour.
05:09 Tomorrow, we'll be bolting on speed parts.
05:11 But then we were packing up, getting ready to go,
05:13 and these guys showed up
05:14 with the same rotary pickup as ours,
05:17 except for it's a little bit newer.
05:18 And it still has the rotary in it,
05:20 and they're going to let us thrash it, right?
05:22 - Yes, sir.
05:23 - You don't need this anymore, right?
05:24 - Yeah.
05:25 - You're about to experience direction, but no movement,
05:28 even though you have lots of sound.
05:30 (engine revving)
05:33 - Wow.
05:35 - It's doing it!
05:36 (laughing)
05:38 (buzzer)
05:40 (chimes)
05:43 (upbeat music)
05:46 - Unbeknownst to me, it's Wednesday, not Tuesday.
05:50 And we have to be in Chandler, Arizona tomorrow
05:52 to register for drag weekend.
05:54 We're not fast enough,
05:55 so we're going to slap Edelbrock heads,
05:57 a used Edelbrock intake
05:59 that my high school buddy, Keith,
06:00 brought to me this morning,
06:01 and brand new Comp valve train in this thing
06:03 in the quest to get it in the 12s
06:05 so we can spray our way into the 10s.
06:07 - Are we actually going to have it running later today
06:09 to see if it's quicker
06:10 or are we going to be reverting it to stock?
06:11 - Well, we kind of have to
06:12 since we need to be there tomorrow.
06:14 - Right.
06:14 - So, yeah.
06:15 - Thursday.
06:16 (laughing)
06:17 - This is a nickel.
06:19 This is going to decide
06:20 which used Edelbrock intake manifold we're going to run,
06:23 'cause we're not even considering
06:25 the Offenhauser right there.
06:27 - I think I'm leaning towards a Performer,
06:28 but let the nickel decide.
06:30 - But that's purple.
06:31 - It does have its merits.
06:31 - Head's purple.
06:32 Tails, Performer.
06:37 - Tails, all right, good to go.
06:39 - That was scientific.
06:41 - It's not Barney Day, I guess.
06:42 - That's how to pick your speed parts.
06:43 First up, we just needed to tear the engine apart
06:47 and find out what we had,
06:48 and we were going to gut this thing pretty badly.
06:51 Intake manifold gone, all the valve train,
06:53 the cylinder heads, and probably the camshaft,
06:56 but I'm not sure just yet.
06:58 - This engine's actually in really good shape
07:00 between the forged pistons and no ring ridge
07:02 and somewhat clean inside and flawless lifters.
07:05 We're good to go.
07:07 - I wonder if it has some sort of a camshaft in it.
07:09 - It has that Schneider cam.
07:10 The specs are in the glove box.
07:12 - Why are we changing the cam?
07:13 - We don't know what that is.
07:14 - Oh, you said the specs are in the glove box.
07:16 - I didn't read 'em.
07:17 - Remember how I said that there was cam spec information
07:19 right here in the glove box?
07:21 There it is.
07:22 - Were you gonna decode it off of the vinyl?
07:23 - Yeah.
07:24 - If he was really serious about horsepower,
07:26 he would've put that on the truck, 'cause they work.
07:28 We know this.
07:30 Chrome air cleaners and stickers add horsepower.
07:32 It's a fact.
07:33 Maybe he wanted it to be more of a sleeper.
07:36 (laughing)
07:37 See this U-shaped bracket right here?
07:39 This is the front engine mount
07:40 for this old Tornado deal.
07:42 The motor mount is bolted to the front cover,
07:45 therefore eliminating our access to the camshaft.
07:48 We'd have to lift the thing up,
07:49 it looks like from here,
07:50 at least an inch and a half to two inches to get it out.
07:53 We don't have a hoist.
07:55 - I got it, I got it, I got it.
07:57 - What?
07:57 - Two by four across the bed rail,
07:58 ratchet strap down to the head bolt right there,
08:01 holding the motor up.
08:02 - That's pretty good.
08:03 - I like that.
08:04 - That will work.
08:05 - Yeah, I still don't wanna do it.
08:07 - We stole the most termite infested piece of wood
08:11 we could find.
08:12 It's flexing that wood pretty good.
08:17 There we go.
08:18 Yeah!
08:25 - There you go, friend.
08:26 - Victory!
08:27 - So that's all that's holding
08:30 the whole front of the motor up.
08:31 - And that heavily bowed piece of wood
08:32 you've got your hand on.
08:34 - Just enough room in front of the motor.
08:37 - That would have been just enough room.
08:40 Our new cam from Comp is an XE274H,
08:44 extreme energy, 274 degrees of advertised duration.
08:48 This is gonna be the magic.
08:49 - I think our peak power just moved up from 3,500 RPM.
08:52 - Well, this is not exactly like throwing a hot dog
09:00 down a hallway.
09:01 (upbeat music)
09:03 We're trying to get the cam shaft in
09:08 and it looks like the cam bearing journal
09:11 is larger than the cam bearing
09:13 and it won't slide in nicely.
09:15 Flawless.
09:16 Not flawless.
09:19 Hold on.
09:27 Try once more before it gets to that.
09:30 Oh, see that?
09:32 - Can I play with it?
09:33 - Yeah.
09:34 If it does go in, it's 'cause I loosened it up.
09:37 - There we go.
09:40 (laughing)
09:45 - It took him about 30 seconds to do what I could not do
09:49 in probably half an hour, 45 minutes.
09:51 - That's my favorite roadkill moment ever.
09:53 - I'm never, ever living this down.
09:56 (laughing)
09:58 - The great thing is there's no possibility
10:00 of lowering this slowly.
10:02 - Is this the part where we call the ambulance?
10:04 - Yeah, we didn't think ahead to the reassembly.
10:06 Go ahead.
10:07 - I'm ready, dude.
10:08 - Drop it.
10:09 - She's down.
10:12 - It's lined right up.
10:13 (upbeat music)
10:15 - Here's that roadkill moment we have every episode.
10:17 We ordered all of our valve train
10:18 from our buddies at Comp Cams and they're awesome.
10:20 I mean, they overnighted everything.
10:22 They even sent us four different length pushrod sets
10:25 because we didn't know what was gonna happen
10:27 when we went from the cast iron 455 heads
10:30 to the new Edelbrock aluminum heads,
10:31 which also changed the rocker arms.
10:34 - That's way too short.
10:36 - So right now, Dave is on the horn,
10:38 trying to find a machine shop or a speed shop
10:41 anywhere in Tucson or Phoenix that's got the parts we need
10:44 so we can slam this thing together.
10:45 - If we can't find those pushrods,
10:47 we are reassembling this whole garbage with stock heads.
10:53 And with the rocker pedestal doohickey that you broke.
10:58 Well, I guess that makes it official.
11:02 We're not getting this thing down the track today.
11:04 I can't say I didn't predict this.
11:06 The pushrod debacle has completely shut us down
11:09 for the night.
11:10 We've got no parts, we've got no leads.
11:12 We don't know if we want to keep assembling it
11:14 because we don't know if we need to return it to stock.
11:16 Everything's up in the air.
11:17 We're gonna spend the rest of the night calling around,
11:19 pulling favors, doing everything that we can
11:21 to get some custom pushrods for this thing.
11:23 And we'll be back in the morning
11:25 and figure out exactly what we're gonna do
11:27 to make it to Phoenix tomorrow
11:29 so that we can register for the drag weekend event
11:31 and then start racing the next day.
11:33 - It is noon on Thursday,
11:38 which is the registration day for normal people
11:40 who are attending drag weekend.
11:42 And this will either make David cry or me smile.
11:47 Probably not the same,
11:49 'cause these are pushrods that may or may not be
11:51 the right length to make those new heads
11:54 and rocker arms work for us.
11:56 Let's find out.
11:57 - Ready?
11:58 Drop that baby in there.
12:02 - Please, please, please, please, please.
12:04 - Dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun,
12:09 dun, dun, and yes!
12:13 - Woo-hoo!
12:15 Nailed it.
12:16 - So we're driving to Phoenix with Edelbrock heads.
12:19 - Wow.
12:21 I really thought we were taking this back apart
12:22 this morning.
12:23 - Last thing we had to do was put the engine together,
12:27 put water in it, and then fix the inevitable water leak.
12:31 Now the thing is,
12:32 we're not gonna be able to test all this stuff
12:33 we just installed,
12:35 because while Tucson Dragway let us work here,
12:38 we didn't rent the track today,
12:39 and the whole crew is gone,
12:41 so there's no way for us to race
12:43 and find out if this worked.
12:45 - Drag strip right there.
12:47 This truck's about to run,
12:48 and we're not gonna be able to use it.
12:52 - You know what this is a lot like?
12:54 Just like going to a strip club.
12:56 You can look, just can't use it.
13:00 - You're not spending enough money.
13:01 Is this the first time we've ever had a drag strip
13:04 at our disposal that we can't use?
13:06 - No, it was all day yesterday
13:07 when it was sitting right there,
13:08 and the thing was in a million pieces.
13:10 - Oh yeah, you're right.
13:11 All right, let's go to Phoenix.
13:13 - Finally, we're on the road,
13:15 and right now we're driving from Tucson to Chandler, Arizona,
13:19 just so that we can enter an event
13:21 that will have us driving back to Tucson
13:23 and then back to Chandler.
13:24 It's kind of a big mess, as was our road trip,
13:27 because I got pulled over, unusually for going too slow.
13:31 That was a wrap for the night.
13:32 (upbeat music)
13:37 Our truck looks incontinent.
13:40 - Look at that masterpiece.
13:42 - Well, it's race day for other people.
13:45 Meanwhile, we're here in the parking lot
13:46 trying to figure out why there's oil all over the ground
13:48 in the engine compartment of the Mazda.
13:50 We probably have to fix it before they'll let us run,
13:53 or at least we get a case of brake clean
13:55 and just hose it all off and pretend it's not there.
13:57 - Think we can keep it from dripping
13:59 long enough to make a pass?
14:00 - Yeah. - Oh, for sure.
14:01 We had to get all this oil off the back of the truck
14:04 so it wouldn't drip on the track,
14:05 and the local parts store was out of brake clean,
14:09 which is insane, and so we talked to the local guys
14:11 into letting us go through the car wash.
14:14 - You know what I just realized?
14:15 - What?
14:16 - Our aerodynamically improved front end
14:17 might not have pulled that hub up so good.
14:19 (laughing)
14:21 We got the important stuff out of the way,
14:27 like getting the truck washed,
14:29 and finally made it here to Chandler, Arizona.
14:31 This is Wild Horse Pass Drag Strip,
14:33 Hot Rod Drag Weekend event, and here's how it works.
14:36 It's three races in three days with a road trip.
14:39 So we race here today, and then this afternoon
14:42 we drive back to Tucson, and then tomorrow
14:45 we race in Tucson, and in the afternoon,
14:47 we drive back here, and then on the third day,
14:51 we race again right here at Chandler.
14:53 But in order to stay in competition,
14:55 you have to run every single track,
14:57 and so we got to thrash to get this thing ready
14:59 to actually race it, and by thrash,
15:01 I mean cleaning up some oil, probably changing
15:04 a radiator hose, and then putting Finnegan at the wheel,
15:06 because if this thing's gonna crash, it's gonna be him.
15:09 We've not actually found a leak,
15:12 so we're just going straight to containment.
15:14 Okay, this is the moment you have to call it.
15:16 What's it gonna run?
15:17 We're about to go 13.10.
15:20 - 12.99.
15:22 - Like your optimism.
15:23 I think she's better than she was,
15:29 but it just occurred to me, we never check the timing
15:32 after we put the distributor back in,
15:33 so this will either be the most amazing run it's ever made,
15:36 or I'll be aborting shortly past 60 feet.
15:39 (engine revving)
15:42 We made three passes in a row, improving each time.
15:59 Last one, 13.11 at 104, so that's best ET,
16:03 best mile an hour, but it should be quicker than that.
16:07 What I don't know is what the density altitude
16:09 is here today, and whether it's better
16:10 or worse than yesterday, and I don't know
16:12 where he's shifting the thing, and we don't know
16:13 where the timing is, so we're gonna go figure
16:15 all of that out, and still hope for that 12.99.
16:18 - This is the first, maybe only time we've ever
16:22 taken something apart, put it back together on Roadkill,
16:24 and actually improved it, picked up 3/10 of a second,
16:27 and that's with this thing pushing through the starting line.
16:30 Like, I'm sitting there trying to take off,
16:31 and I give it just a little RPM,
16:33 and the brakes won't hold the truck.
16:34 It goes right through the starting line,
16:35 starts the clock before I've even taken off.
16:38 So, this is legit a 12-second truck,
16:41 if we could maybe bleed the brakes or do something to it.
16:44 New shoes, anything to improve this thing.
16:47 Or hell, how about we put some brake fluid in it,
16:52 'cause there's none in there right now.
16:54 Dude, I'm ecstatic. - Why?
16:56 - We actually bolted parts onto something and improved it.
17:00 - By lowering our altitude. - Whatever.
17:04 And if we go again right now, this second,
17:06 it runs in the 12s.
17:07 - Because it doesn't have wide-open throttle?
17:08 - No, because there's no freaking brake fluid in there.
17:11 - Okay, give it a shot.
17:12 - Get the 12-second tune in there.
17:14 - Doing anything?
17:16 - Oh yeah, there's air in there.
17:18 But at least it now has fluid to push through the system.
17:21 - The pedal feels better.
17:22 Let's get a timing light on it.
17:25 - Yeah. - That was a lot.
17:28 - I like big changes. - That was 30.
17:31 - That wasn't 30.
17:32 - That wasn't 30.
17:34 I'm going for 12s, all right?
17:37 Gotta make big changes.
17:38 All right, well maybe it was a little bit too much.
17:43 (laughing)
17:45 Yeah, that felt good.
17:49 That felt good.
17:50 This feels much better.
17:55 Woo-hoo-hoo!
17:56 Go, baby!
17:57 Yeah!
18:01 Yeah!
18:02 Bam!
18:03 Bam!
18:04 12 low at 112.
18:07 Oh my God!
18:09 12.04!
18:10 Yeah!
18:12 (laughing)
18:14 Oh my God, that was awesome.
18:19 This is probably the most we've sucked the least
18:21 on any Roadkill ever.
18:23 - Dude!
18:24 - Dude!
18:24 - Bam!
18:25 (laughing)
18:26 All the bam!
18:27 - There's more left.
18:28 - That's amazing!
18:29 - There's more left, we need geranium fluid.
18:31 - It does wheelies.
18:32 - Does it?
18:33 - Yes.
18:34 - Wow.
18:35 - Textbook paper slipper.
18:35 - So we only have to talk smack on the guy
18:37 that sold it to us 50%.
18:39 - Exactly.
18:40 - I don't care if we leave the crank
18:41 on the racetrack on Sunday.
18:42 - No, I don't either.
18:43 - As long as we get into the 10s.
18:44 We just need to prove the guy right.
18:45 I don't want the whole world thinking he's full of crap.
18:48 (upbeat music)
18:50 - Well that was a huge victory day.
18:53 Almost 11s, but not quite, which gives us a goal.
18:56 Right now we gotta pack the thing up
18:57 and drive all the way back to Tucson.
18:59 Before running all day, maybe putting nitrous on tomorrow,
19:02 and then driving back here.
19:04 Survive the road trip!
19:10 It's like Groundhog Day back here at Tucson Dragway,
19:13 except for this time Hot Rod Drag Weekend is in full swing.
19:16 I think our plan is just to like,
19:19 degrease this thing again, 'cause it leaked everywhere.
19:23 And then make a pass.
19:24 We're probably not gonna go faster here today
19:26 because of the altitude thing.
19:27 Then we're gonna get out of here,
19:29 throw the nitrous on it so that we can road trip
19:31 back to Phoenix and try and run that 1099 tomorrow.
19:34 What's gonna happen?
19:36 - 11 second pass.
19:37 - You think so?
19:38 At altitude?
19:39 - It's only 3300 feet, I think we have a chance.
19:41 - Let's do it before it gets hot.
19:42 (engine revving)
19:45 Oh, trains are shifting better!
19:58 Go baby, go!
19:59 Woo-hoo-hoo!
20:01 12.16 and 113.
20:04 Not bad considering the altitude change.
20:06 I feel good about the run.
20:08 I'd like to get to the 11s,
20:09 but I think we're gonna have to go back down the hill
20:10 onto Chandler to do it.
20:11 So, we might be done today.
20:13 We've probably run the best that we can
20:17 here at the altitude of Tucson Dragway,
20:19 and so we're gonna hit the road early
20:21 so that we can get to a buddy's house
20:23 and install the magic.
20:25 The NOS Big Shot Nitrous Oxide System.
20:29 - Quite a compound here.
20:32 - It is.
20:33 (engine revving)
20:36 - Rocks.
20:38 (laughing)
20:40 Right now, we are in the middle of the desert
20:48 at my buddy Matt and Darren's shop,
20:49 and you'll remember these guys as the suckers
20:51 that sold us the Dragwar for $1,000.
20:54 - Aren't we the suckers?
20:55 - And the Rotson, I think, for $500.
20:58 And we need to put nitrous on the Maserati,
21:00 so we're gonna hang out with these guys,
21:02 steal all their parts, and drink their beer
21:04 in the quest of making this go faster.
21:06 - We jammed to get the nitrous installed,
21:09 which involves putting a plate underneath the carburetor
21:12 and doing a little bit of wiring on the solenoids,
21:14 but you also have to mount the nitrous bottle,
21:17 which, by the way,
21:18 likes a little bit of heat to build pressure.
21:21 - See, the reason this goes here is so
21:22 you can burn your arm.
21:24 - And warm the bottle at the same time.
21:26 - Once we had the nitrous installed,
21:27 we had to get into the ignition,
21:29 and Finnegan had purchased this rocket science
21:32 drag racing ignition box that needed a laptop computer
21:36 to tell it how to have a timing curve.
21:38 We didn't exactly get it right the first time.
21:41 After a lengthy thrash last night,
21:50 we executed this fine piece of electrical engineering.
21:54 Finnegan made me wear pants today, so I have to drive.
21:56 - Who wears the pants in this family?
21:58 This guy.
21:59 - Matt and Darren are back,
22:01 helping us out with the nitrous system
22:03 after we used up their entire shop last night.
22:06 Right now, they're flowing the nitrous,
22:07 which means they're squirting the gasoline
22:09 through an orifice that's the same size
22:11 as our fuel jet in the nitrous system
22:13 and setting the flowing fuel pressure at six.
22:15 You're kidding me!
22:18 When we were testing the program and stuff earlier,
22:22 we had the nitrous activation switch unconnected.
22:26 When it got it hooked back up, it got hooked back up wrong,
22:28 which opened the solenoid,
22:29 so the whole time that the engine was running
22:32 when they were adjusting the fuel pressure,
22:33 it was pouring gas in the engine,
22:35 so all the cylinders are full of gas, which is awesome.
22:37 Look, look, look, look, look.
22:41 Tense, let's do this!
22:51 All of the wisdom I could have bestowed on you,
22:53 I don't have it in me right now.
22:56 - It slipped your mind?
22:57 - Yeah.
22:59 Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it's gonna hook hard left
23:00 after you leave the starting line,
23:02 so maybe put a little right rudder into it.
23:04 - So normal?
23:04 - You'll be good.
23:06 - Well, this'll be our last episode of Roadkill.
23:08 Really appreciate everything you guys have, you know,
23:10 given me throughout my career,
23:12 and, you know, thanks for the teamwork and partnership.
23:15 - I got dulcet, we're fine.
23:17 I gotta poop, too.
23:18 - Okay.
23:19 - So if you could hurry this up.
23:21 - Oh, I might not make it.
23:22 Is there a bathroom here?
23:23 - Really?
23:24 - I gotta go.
23:25 - We can wait for you to splatter.
23:26 - Yeah, I've been holding it a while.
23:27 - In the tower.
23:28 - All right, sorry.
23:31 - We only have 'til three o'clock and it is 2.42.
23:33 Solid chance that that poop goes for that full 17 minutes.
23:37 I don't know if Finnegan ever realized
23:39 that his bowel movement was gonna become a plot point.
23:42 - I'm just getting down to my race weight, that's all.
23:49 - Now it is my turn in the Maserati,
23:51 and in my very first run,
23:53 we're gonna hit the nitrous oxide.
23:56 Finnegan had this thing tuned up
23:58 so that it wasn't gonna hit all of the 180 horsepower
24:01 worth of nitrous right from the starting line.
24:03 Instead, it's going to progressively feed it in
24:06 one and a half seconds into the run,
24:08 and cross your fingers that that is enough spray
24:11 to make this thing run in the tens.
24:13 (engine revving)
24:15 - Yeah!
24:27 Go!
24:30 - It's crooked.
24:42 (laughing)
24:43 - We picked up 10 miles an hour
24:46 and almost another second off the ET,
24:48 but we did not get our 10 second pass.
24:50 - We just oiled the entire drag strip?
24:52 - Maybe.
24:55 - Turns out the Olds does not have enough piston ring seal
25:00 for 180 shot worth of nitrous.
25:02 What happens is essentially it blew by
25:05 a bunch of combustion pressure,
25:07 and it pressurized the crank case,
25:08 which shoved all the oil up out of the fill tube,
25:11 and splattered it all over the back of the truck.
25:14 - It doesn't run tens, that guy lied to us!
25:16 - You just committed automotive homicide, look at that.
25:19 - Oh, it's bad.
25:20 - Oh dude, you should've seen this thing.
25:21 It took off, ma, and then the nitrous came on,
25:24 and then it went, ba!
25:25 Like that.
25:27 And I was like this, and then I saw 11.30,
25:29 and I was like, oh, let's go again!
25:32 But obviously Valdez happened,
25:35 so we're not going again, we're done.
25:36 - When you buy a used car,
25:37 you never know what you're gonna get.
25:40 We knew that we were getting a '74 Mazda pickup,
25:42 with a 455 Olds in the bed,
25:45 on an Oldsmobile transaxle,
25:46 and the thing is, that guy swore
25:49 this thing ran tens in the quarter mile,
25:50 he swore it did wheelies,
25:52 we were pretty sure that wasn't gonna happen.
25:55 And even after throwing about four grand worth
25:58 of speed parts on this turd,
26:00 including 180 shot of nitrous,
26:03 tens were not in the cards for the Maserati.
26:07 We weren't surprised, even a little bit.
26:11 And you shouldn't be either, because Roadkill.
26:14 Want the parts we used to build these cars?
26:20 Visit jegs.com/roadkill.
26:22 Somebody forgot their coffee on the hood of our car.
26:27 You wanna do anything about the coffee?
26:33 - It'll solve itself in a minute.
26:35 - That's littering.
26:38 (engine rumbling)
26:40 Ah, it's too far.
26:41 Oh, and it's gone.
26:45 Let me tell you something.
26:48 There is no one that I trust better,
26:51 or more than David Freiberger,
26:53 to sit in front of a bomb,
26:56 I mean, a Mazda with a 455 Olds in the bed with nitrous.
27:02 You can do it!
27:03 (gun cocking)
27:05 (upbeat music)
