00:00 A quick reflection on last night, a good performance, you made a lot of changes but a win can only
00:06 do the power of good confidence wise?
00:09 Yeah, it was a good performance and I always feel that eventually it will come if you continue
00:15 to work the way you are supposed to work.
00:19 I think we didn't make a big deal out of the defeats because we know we are still going
00:22 to progress and we are not going to make too much of a big deal of a win.
00:26 We just continue now and look forward to Tottenham.
00:28 Can you give us an update on the injuries?
00:36 There was a little bit of a cost to this game but I think a number of players are not going
00:43 to be available for Saturday, it's fair to say.
00:46 I think the key thing is we avoided probably the extremely severe injuries and we feared
00:53 for some of them, especially Agdal, that it could be severe and in the end it's just going
00:58 to be a normal rehab but it kind of rules him out for the weekend of course.
01:03 Virginio?
01:04 VT we are still assessing as we speak so we will see.
01:10 As you say it's been a tough start hasn't it, two home games, yet to play away from
01:15 home in the league, it's a bit skewed isn't it that?
01:18 Which is strange but Tottenham, another side who are under a new manager, what are you
01:23 expecting from them and how do you prepare for them?
01:28 I mean there's no such thing as easy games in this league so I think you have got to
01:34 try and prepare in the best way you think you can get a result.
01:39 Like I said our team shows signs of having something really interesting, something to
01:46 look forward to and we continue to build on that whether it's Tottenham or any other opposition
01:50 for us we are focused on our own improvements and we still think we can get a result against
01:55 Tottenham of course.
01:56 And no Harry Kane to face, is that a bonus?
02:00 I don't have to face anyone, I'm the manager.
02:05 One concern, you have been conceding a few early goals which always makes it an uphill
02:10 struggle and probably psychologically is damaging for players.
02:16 I think you play against good teams and they punish you whenever you give them the opportunity
02:22 to and I think that's the learning I go through obviously together with the staff every game
02:28 that we play and I'd be worried if it were things that I thought we couldn't solve as
02:34 a staff with the group of players that we have but I think that it is solvable, that
02:42 there are solutions, there are things and habits that we have in our game that we just
02:46 need to recover that can prevent these moments from happening but you play against good sides
02:51 and those players don't need many chances to score.
02:54 I think you were quoted after the Aston Villa defeat by saying you have not seen anything
02:59 that with a bit of time and experience we won't be able to fix and the jump from the
03:04 Championship to the Premier League is the biggest jump in world football.
03:08 Can you see them handling that because it is enormous?
03:14 I think it is a question for every club that gets promoted and as you see the likes of
03:20 Fulham and I think it was Fulham, Nottingham Forest and I'm forgetting one, Man Utd.
03:29 Yeah you've got it.
03:30 The season before?
03:31 Yeah.
03:32 Obviously the season, was that Fulham, Forest and?
03:36 Who came up.
03:37 Who came up?
03:38 It's like a, hang on a second, we're not continuing without having the answer to that.
03:45 Bournemouth and your mind goes blank.
03:48 So the only thing I wanted to say is the clubs who went up last season were obviously successful
03:54 in doing so but if you look at the three or four seasons that they've had before there's
03:59 a lot of investment that went into those squads so there's a high price to have a seat at
04:05 the table and we're trying to do just the same in terms of making the team as ready
04:10 as we can to give ourselves a chance but I don't think there's anything you can do in
04:15 one transfer window to close the gap between the Championship and the Premier League so
04:19 hopefully we'll just gel as a team, as a club to the level that's necessary to get the results.
04:27 And that tough start continues even after the international break.
04:30 I know you probably don't look that far ahead but after Forest away it was Man United at
04:35 home and Newcastle away and Chelsea at home.
04:39 You've been served a difficult number there haven't you?
04:43 I think I'd prefer it that way.
04:44 Really?
04:45 Yeah, yeah, yeah because I mean those games can all come 10 games into the season or 15
04:51 games into the season and you could be as good as you want to be.
04:56 It doesn't mean you're going to get results so for me I think the key is still on getting
05:01 better as quick as we can and facing the top sides early.
05:05 For me I don't have a problem with that and as long as emotionally we don't let ourselves
05:09 get dragged too much into a hype if we do succeed to get results or too much into drama
05:16 if we don't succeed to get results, I think this team has got enough to have something
05:22 to look forward to.
05:23 It's a really enjoyable team to coach.
05:26 There's not one moment in the game where I haven't enjoyed being with these guys and
05:32 that's a good base.
05:33 The transfer window remains open for another 24 hours or so.
05:38 Any more business that you can see?
05:40 Any areas that you want to strengthen I suppose as the first few games have given you more
05:45 food for thought?
05:47 Yeah, I mean possibly it's a little bit of a Rubik's Cube always when you do a squad
05:52 plan because you have to look at it in many dimensions.
05:55 There's the short-term needs that are always the priority but then as well the long-term
06:00 needs for the club and I think we've done a good job in terms of recruiting players
06:06 that the club can look forward to building on but in the end I think right now if we
06:11 can get something that… we had a little bit of a scare with the injury of Egdal and
06:17 Vitinho so we were looking out for that but if it's not too bad then I think we're
06:21 just going to bring in players I think that can either strengthen us directly or players
06:27 that can come and support for the future but it's got to be those extremes.
06:34 So you do have those irons in the fire because it's late now isn't it?
06:38 It's not going to be a panic buy situation tomorrow at 11 o'clock?
06:42 We don't control when other clubs make their players available so if a player is available
06:46 then we'll always look into it and I've always said it, any player… I think it's
06:52 in any club but I don't know if everybody wants to say it that way but you're always
06:56 competing with every player in the world that's available to the club that you're playing
07:01 with for and because you always have a duty as a manager and as a club to make the team
07:07 the best you can.
07:08 Well we'll have someone here tomorrow so he might be busy?
07:13 We'll see.
07:15 Don't rule anything out.
07:18 Vinny, it's early on in the campaign of course but how are you enjoying life as a
07:22 Premier League manager and what new challenges may have presented themselves this time?
07:28 I think there's differences.
07:30 I think definitely the difference is one, I think the levels of course in the Premier
07:35 League, the demand is I think as high as it can be in world football.
07:41 But in terms of preparation you get more time to prepare for Premier League games.
07:45 If you're in the Championship you just get hit from all sides and that makes it definitely
07:51 different from a coaching perspective.
07:55 But in the end spaces are the same whether you're in the Premier League, in the Conference
07:59 League or in the Championship it's the same.
08:02 The only thing that needs to improve is the speed and the quality of execution and this
08:08 is the best in the world here.
08:09 City, Villa, now Spurs, how much are you relishing these battles personally and is it also enabling
08:17 your further growth as a manager?
08:19 I think whenever you're exposed to the highest level you always grow, you always improve.
08:28 I think that's the journey we're on, myself as a coach but also the players.
08:33 I've seen a club and a group of players that are willing to go on the front foot and take
08:39 the fight to everyone we have to.
08:42 It's something we really feel passionate about.
08:44 We play against big teams, big clubs.
08:48 But when the game starts it's nil-nil and we've got to try our best to get the result
08:53 that we want.
08:54 What have you made of a new look Spurs so far this season?
09:03 I've been following Ange-Marie Puskoglou for a long time.
09:06 It's the continuation of what he did in Australia, especially a lot of it in Japan as well.
09:12 You can see his team play the same way in Japan, then with Celtic and now with Tottenham.
09:18 Then the rest is always time.
09:19 I think managers like him have a very clear idea of what they want to achieve.
09:25 I suppose it takes a few transfer windows, it takes a few moments to adapt to either
09:30 the league or the team.
09:31 But these guys, I think his mentality, his competitiveness is something that will eventually
09:37 lead to results.
09:38 I'm quite sure of it.
09:43 I enjoy watching his teams and his games and I'm sure Tottenham fans will have a lot of
09:47 fun watching him as well.
09:48 What have you made of James Trafford's start to the season?
09:58 Obviously, Muric started in the cup.
10:01 What's your thinking there in terms of how you choose a number one goalkeeper?
10:06 The same way as for the rest of the squad.
10:10 Like I said, I don't think this is the place.
10:12 You can go down the road at the top four, top five, top six clubs that we have in the
10:17 North West and you can ask questions about who plays and what not.
10:22 I think at Burnley it's pretty simple.
10:25 We want to have a competitive squad.
10:27 Hopefully, if we can, two players per position that are really close and can push each other,
10:32 especially due to the rage because they can both improve still.
10:35 It's the same for the goalkeepers.
10:38 And then we have to push them so I don't really make it more difficult than it needs to be.
10:46 Just in terms of the transfer market, are you looking for a particular type of player
10:49 in terms of maybe more leadership in the group?
10:54 Yes and no.
10:55 Because leadership, we do have leadership in the group.
10:58 Maybe not the type that comes to mind when you just observe the squad.
11:08 But we do have experienced players.
11:10 We do have leadership in the group.
11:12 I think as well what you've got to make sure is that you don't have a fetish about experience
11:19 and leadership because there's plenty of experienced players that went down last season and the
11:24 season before that.
11:25 So for us it's a case of having the right profiles first and foremost and attaching
11:32 the character to it.
11:33 It's always something that we're looking out for, definitely.
11:38 Just one more question on the transfer market.
11:40 One player you have been linked with Vinny, is Eric Dier.
11:44 Is that a possibility?
11:45 Are those reports accurate?
11:46 I don't know, honestly.
11:49 At this moment in time, if you look at my phone whilst we're speaking I'll probably
11:53 get pinged 15 players at the moment.
11:56 It's just, it's closer to what you experience if you go to the markets in Marrakech than
12:04 what you think it is.
12:05 I went there in the summer so I know what it's like.
12:07 I know what you mean.
12:08 That's how the market behaves more than anything.
12:12 We try and stay calm and consistent and have a deliberate plan of action but it just changes
12:21 constantly at the moment.
12:22 Hi Vinny, OK.
12:23 I just want to ask a question about Sander Berger.
12:31 Sheffield United towards the end of last season was playing more further forward and he got
12:36 a little bit more success out of that.
12:39 Out of the two games that you've obviously played him, have you any idea where you're
12:43 going to play him further forward?
12:47 Like I said, I think those are discussions for down the road.
12:50 Liverpool, United, City, you can ask all the questions about plays and positions and who's
12:56 best.
12:57 I think for us they play where we need them to play and they know.
13:03 However, we're rarely going to be favourites in games this season and we need to be flexible
13:07 to try and give ourselves any sort of little advantage we have.
13:11 So we're not building the team around any one player and his favourite position.
13:16 We're always putting the team in such a shape that we think we have a chance to win the
13:19 game.
13:20 That's our only priority.
13:21 As of last night and the fixtures that you have coming into this game and the ones before
13:27 that, you obviously touched upon that it was quite a hard run.
13:30 So how much of a confidence booster was it to get the win and be a clean sheet after
13:34 obviously conceding three in the first two?
13:39 The biggest thing for me is when you review a game, are there things that are fixable?
13:50 In one of the first games, there's a goal from Haaland.
13:54 Is it fixable?
13:56 Maybe not, that one.
13:57 But then you look at the other things, is it coachable, is it fixable?
14:02 And especially for me as well, my experience even last season, because for those who were
14:07 there, it was a story of a lot of games as well in the beginning of last season in the
14:11 Championship.
14:12 But from our experience as coaches, we feel like, OK, it's just making sure we review
14:18 it, making sure we put in the training content, making sure that we follow through on demanding
14:25 from players to progress in certain areas.
14:28 And then with a level of consistency, you do see improvement.
14:31 I think the clean sheet we had yesterday, for example, when we played at Forest, was
14:37 probably due to the fact that we had those two games before where we could actually show
14:41 to the players, these areas we've got to pay more attention to.
14:45 For example, the speed of transitions and counters in the Premier League is a totally
14:49 different speed than the Championship.
14:52 So we can warn them as much as we want before the season, because we obviously knew it before
14:56 we got into the league.
14:58 But until it really happens, you don't really believe it or you don't find the tools as
15:03 a player yourself.
15:04 And so we're really big on that.
15:06 And our team is filled with players who've got loads of margin to improve.
15:10 They just need to be willing to work hard and they are.
15:13 What was your reaction to Solford's goal?
15:16 About two minutes after we spoke to you last night, we saw you got Solford in the next
15:19 round of the Cup.
15:20 What was your reaction to that draw?
15:23 I think this is what the Cup is about.
15:25 You go and play Solford away on different ground, different environment, good away day
15:30 for the fans.
15:34 We've been lucky to have two decent cup runs last season.
15:38 So we know it's something the fans enjoy.
15:40 Are you pleased with the squad depth you've got at the moment?
15:43 Because you made those changes last night and not too much change in the performance
15:46 levels.
15:47 It depends.
15:50 It always depends as a coach.
15:54 I think as long as there are teams that are better than us, we always need to look to
16:00 see if we can find a way to help the team get better as well.
16:05 Whatever we can do to improve that.
16:09 But I'm calm in terms of knowing that we've built a solid base and anything we add hopefully
16:15 makes it only stronger.
16:16 If we're not able to make it stronger, then probably it's better to keep it that way.
16:22 Unless maybe one or the other young player comes in just to again support the next players
16:29 coming through in the future.
16:30 There's been talk of a lot of players coming in.
16:32 Is there any chance of players leaving before the deadline tomorrow night?
16:35 It's not something we've discussed at this moment in time.
16:39 As well you have to look at our situation from last season.
16:43 We lost six lone players.
16:45 So to replace those lone players, let's say whatever the Premier League fees for a normal
16:49 standard, you see them going through on Sky every single day.
16:52 What's the value of a Premier League player nowadays, especially if it's a starting player?
16:56 We lost of these six, maybe four or five of them were starting players for us last season.
17:00 So first we had to spend to replace them to get to the same level as last season.
17:05 And then we had to spend to improve on the squad that we had last season.
17:09 So it's only normal for us that we're still looking to make this squad a Premier League
17:15 squad.
17:16 Can I ask one question pre-embargo and then embargo?
17:27 With the Salford game, a lot is going to be made of the fact that the class tonight owned
17:30 50 per cent.
17:31 I think Nicky Buttonroy came with the other night.
17:34 You obviously have big Man City connections.
17:36 We'll talk about Man City United by proxy in terms of Burnley.
17:40 Salford, is that an angle that interests you, Vini?
17:44 What do you feel about that?
17:46 I think this would enrage a lot of Salford City fans and a lot of Burnley fans.
17:51 So absolutely not.
17:53 It's Burnley Football Club against Salford.
17:58 I'm sure that the owners of Salford want the fans to be there to support Salford.
18:04 In our case, me, I'm representing Burnley and that's the only thing I'm focused about.
18:09 I'm not going to lie.
18:18 I'm not.
18:28 I'm not.
18:38 [BLANK_AUDIO]
