00:00 >> Yeah.
00:03 >> Is there a couple weeks in, I guess, almost, a couple weeks in the camp,
00:06 just how's it going for you?
00:07 I mean, obviously, you've been around, so this is not new for you, but
00:09 how's this camp going for you?
00:11 >> Yeah, it's going really well.
00:12 Just doing my best, trying to be a professional, trying to bring guys up,
00:17 hold everybody to the standard, just connecting better as a team.
00:21 So I think it's going good.
00:22 >> Now, at Stanford, you guys were more of a three, four, is that right?
00:25 Kind of an eye?
00:26 >> Somewhat, yeah.
00:26 >> Yeah, so I mean, I guess just without getting into what you guys are doing here
00:29 too much, but kind of what's different for you as far as how you're playing and
00:31 how they're using you as opposed to when you're back there?
00:34 >> So here, I'm playing a lot more like zone.
00:38 We played a lot of man at Stanford.
00:41 I was like man on the tight end, like, I don't know, maybe 60% of my snaps.
00:45 Maybe 40.
00:47 But yeah, here it's a lot more zone concepts.
00:50 >> There's a lot of new faces kind of surrounding you and you being one of them.
00:53 How have you guys kind of all just came together and gelled a little bit?
00:56 >> Yeah, so it's kind of weird, even though a lot of guys are new,
01:00 we still feel like we've known each other for a while.
01:02 Just through team activities and getting connected in that way.
01:08 And then just the grind of camp, it's brought everybody together pretty well.
01:11 >> What ways off the field you guys kind of came together?
01:13 >> So me and Ace, we went bowling the other night.
01:17 I'm trying to think of what we did during.
01:19 We had a team, or like position groups that went to Coach Allen's house.
01:25 We went paintballing.
01:26 I'm trying to think.
01:28 And then we had this thing called the program,
01:31 which was like a leadership team building activity, which really helped us.
01:35 >> So a lot of different things that are competition based still.
01:38 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, still very much so.
01:40 >> Gotcha.
01:41 >> I think you talked in the spring that you liked kind of how you're being used in
01:45 the defense, cuz you could kind of move around and kind of play some different
01:47 roles.
01:48 Is that still kind of how camp is going, or
01:50 have you maybe zeroed in kind of on what they want you to do,
01:53 or how they want you to excel in the defense?
01:55 >> Yeah, so in the spring, I was doing a little bit edge rush stuff.
01:59 And I'm still doing that just because of our blitzes are built like that.
02:03 But as of now, I'm pretty zeroed in at Mike, inside backer.
02:08 >> And Aaron Casey over there as well.
02:10 >> What's been the biggest transition phase, I guess, for you, coming from
02:16 Stanford and now coming here, which obviously a totally different defense and
02:19 different conference and everything else?
02:21 >> Yeah, so because the Big Ten is big boy football, playing at a heavier weight,
02:25 it's more physical, which I like.
02:30 Because Stanford and the Pac-12 was a lot more like air raid.
02:33 I was lighter, I was about 233, 235.
02:36 Here I'm about 240, 242.
02:39 So getting used to that weight and playing it,
02:42 or just trying to get used to having the stamina at that weight.
02:45 But it's going well.
02:47 >> What was the process like of adding weight?
02:49 I mean, you're obviously older, right, and your body kind of taps out at a certain
02:51 point, it's like it gets hard to add weight.
02:53 >> Right, so I was kind of fighting to be 233, 235.
02:57 So I'm enjoying it a little bit more here.
03:00 I'm able to eat a little more.
03:02 I'm still fairly lean, so it's been good, but
03:07 it wasn't hard to gain weight at all.
03:10 >> Any specific exercise besides the nutrition, like you did to gain weight?
03:15 >> So, I mean, Wellman is best in the business.
03:18 So just our lifting regimen and how heavy we lift and
03:23 just the intensity at which we work out.
03:25 The demand that it created in our body allowed me to put on weight fairly easy.
03:30 >> Is that kind of something you for yourself go into the Big Ten knew?
03:33 Like, okay, I have to do this, or
03:34 was it kind of communicated to you by coaches here?
03:37 Like, hey, you're gonna see a lot more power run stuff here.
03:40 It's a lot, like you said, a lot of big boy football, and
03:42 that's kind of what they told you?
03:44 >> Yeah, it was a little bit of both.
03:45 I knew the nature of the conference, but coming in, talking to Coach Will, and
03:50 just scheme and everything.
03:53 It's designed for us to play hard nose football and stop the run.
03:59 >> How much has Aaron helped you as far as just getting to know the defense?
04:04 And obviously I know with Coach Perrera, they took some tweaks, but
04:07 basically it's the same defense they've been running.
04:08 I mean, how much have you kind of leaned on him just about ins and outs?
04:11 >> Yeah, so he played Mike last year.
04:13 So he's been a big help in making sure I know my checks and stuff like that.
04:19 So he's playing Stinger this year.
04:20 So just having him as kind of like a co-pilot has been super helpful, yeah.
04:25 >> What's it been like to kind of lean on him as someone who had a ton of success
04:28 last year, let the team tackles and
04:30 being able to rely on a lot of his previous experiences?
04:33 >> Yeah, it's great to lean on him just because I have confidence in his ability
04:36 and his knowledge.
04:37 So yeah, that's pretty much how I feel about that.
04:43 >> Yeah.
04:43 >> There's a couple of you guys to transfer, Ty, you're from Stanford.
04:46 Does that make your acclimation process a little bit easier,
04:49 more comforting, I guess?
04:52 >> In a way, a little bit, yeah.
04:54 I mean, it's one more added guy that I've already had shared memories and
04:59 experiences with.
05:00 It's kind of weird because when they got here,
05:05 I had already been here since January, and they got here in June, I think.
05:09 So at that point, I was already acclimated.
05:12 I kind of found my group in the team.
05:14 And because they both play different positions,
05:17 it was like I don't interact with them as much.
05:18 And we all kind of, we come together at some points, but for the most part,
05:23 I don't know, I guess we have our own little separate groups, but still together.
05:30 >> When you start looking at IU, did you talk to Javon Swan and all?
05:33 I mean, I know he was here before, and obviously he was out there.
05:35 I guess you guys crossed paths for a couple years.
05:37 Did you reach out to him at all about Indiana?
05:39 >> Yeah, so I talked to him prior to coming here and just asked him how it was,
05:43 how the program was.
05:44 And he just, I mean, he had great things to say.
05:47 How he said, they're gonna take care of you.
05:51 They're gonna make sure you recover.
05:53 Wellman is great.
05:54 But yeah, just he had really good things to say, yeah.
05:58 >> Anything else for Jacob?
06:01 >> Who won bowling between you and Ace?
06:03 >> Who won bowling?
06:03 I did.
06:05 Yeah, yeah, 155.
06:06 Not great, but yeah.
06:08 - Yeah.
06:08 - Yeah.
06:09 - Awesome.
06:10 Thanks, Jimmy.
