00:00 All right, everyone welcome back in to another live edition of the Patriots beat podcast right here on the CLNS media network
00:07 Brian Hines from Pat's pulpit joined as always by Alex Bart from 95 the sports hub
00:12 Day 12 of Patriots training camp in the books the last open session. It should be maybe their last
00:19 practice here they might have one more before they ship it up to Green Bay, but
00:25 They're in game game prep mode here again with Houston on the horizon Thursday coming to Gillette
00:31 Another one of these practices where it was a lot of scout teamwork. They had the cards out
00:36 Just looking like we're getting ready for Houston here on the practice fields today
00:41 Yeah, and it's been really interesting to see how much game prep they've done just because in in my six years covering camp
00:47 I don't ever remember seeing something that
00:49 Resembled a regular season practice as much as the majority of these last two days have now not everything has we saw the one-on-ones
00:56 we saw the the the the late 11 on 11 starters to miniature goal line, but I
01:02 Can't help in Brian. Maybe I'm naive for this like feel free to push back you had Bill Belichick say earlier in the week
01:09 Yeah, we have everything installed that we want to get installed
01:11 You had Bailey's happy say earlier this week that the offense is ahead of schedule
01:15 So I can't help but link those two things. I actually I believe they're ahead of schedule or I believe they believe they're ahead of schedule
01:22 I believe they're very happy with their progress at this point and
01:24 You're seeing them kind of get down to some more finer detail stuff that they certainly didn't get to last year and even in other
01:30 Years, I don't know that they got to
01:32 Yeah, that makes sense. I don't even
01:34 Really think about putting those together, but you heard zappy say yes. Yeah, maybe I'm being naive
01:40 Maybe I'm going to step too far. That's possible. It makes sense though
01:43 but and then I mean we were saying like yesterday you had the in stadium Friday, which was low-key and then
01:50 Saturday was off and then Sunday was low-key. We're showing up on Monday yesterday and being like, alright
01:56 We're gonna like ramp this thing up
01:58 We're gonna have the refs there the pads on we're really gonna get going and then it was just kind of one of these
02:03 Regular season practices if you would so that's a good point. It does kind of seem like they are ahead of schedule
02:10 They're not really, you know rushing to install things. They're just hey, we're gonna we have some time here to prep for this game
02:16 And that's what we're gonna do
02:18 Yeah, and it's again it you can't help but look at it and think it's a good sign
02:22 Yeah, especially where they were at this point last year right rushing to install all these different things
02:29 Changing their offense a few times, but so good stuff
02:32 But there was a few competitive periods that we could take away stuff from obviously the one-on-ones
02:39 I thought the the biggest or most competitive was that last red zone period
02:45 which
02:47 Mike is sick. He saw a case on booties catch yesterday and said I have to one-up that because yeah, that was a
02:53 Spectacular catch kind of like back of the end zone
02:57 Around I think it was peppers, right?
03:00 There was yes
03:02 Peppers and some I don't remember who somebody else was there
03:05 Shawn Wade ton of defenders their poor Julius peppers just keeps getting beat by Mike a sticky
03:10 And there's nothing he can do about it because just like snagging it out of the air with his right hand getting both feet down
03:17 It was an awesome catch probably better than booties yesterday, which was amazing, too
03:22 But I think the bigger thing you could take out of that is you're starting to kind of see this Mike a sickie
03:29 Mac Jones connection grow and that chemistry is growing after what was kind of a quiet start to the summer
03:35 From that from from just sick either
03:37 Yeah, we kind of talked about this yesterday. I talked to him yesterday
03:42 I feel like the chemistry is coming along with Mac Jones and that's a big part of it
03:45 I think he's just feeling more comfortable in his role. We'll see how it continues to build but
03:48 it's super encouraging to see him get involved because
03:51 We talked to it
03:53 You know
03:53 They haven't done as much red zone as they did early in camp when they struggled and we covered the red zone struggles pretty
03:59 Extensively, but a lot of it was hey, where's Mike a sticky?
04:02 This is a guy that's supposed to be showing up in the red zone
04:04 He wasn't and he's showing up elsewhere now, but you would think if he's showing up elsewhere
04:07 He's gonna show up in the red zone
04:09 So I think there we never really closed the book on those red zone issues
04:13 They just kind of moved on and they were doing better with full field and we said, okay
04:16 When they do get back in the red zone
04:18 I think it'll look a lot better because now Mac and Mike is sick. You're more on the same page
04:21 Yep, obviously big body big target in that red zone. So that'll be good for them to get on the same page
04:29 Hunter Henry still pretty active. It looks like Hunter Henry and Ramon Dre really are kind of
04:34 Two of Mac's favorite targets working the underneath a lot of passes to them again today, especially Ramon Dre working against the linebackers
04:43 He looks like he really likes to go there. So
04:45 That that's looks like max to two guys now juju still in that mix
04:52 But um tycoon tycoon had a pretty good day today - after what was a few bad practices
04:58 The last few days he needed a good day. He got open deep caught a deep ball from zappy
05:04 He made a nice contested catch against Joshua Bledsoe for Mac Jones climbing the ladder to go up and get it coming down holding on
05:11 Through contact so that's super encouraging. Look it's a oh Andy B. Christian is all-in one-on-one. Look, it's just yeah
05:18 It's just one day. He's got a long way to go to dig is these are the days
05:21 We thought he was gonna have like consistently coming into camp
05:25 He's got a long way to go to dig himself out of the hole
05:27 He's dug himself into and DeMario Douglas is right there on his tail
05:30 Maybe even ahead of him at this point, but you know
05:33 If there was a time to turn it around get going right before the first preseason game
05:36 We'll see what if he has a good game Thursday night. We can start talking about okay slow start to camp
05:40 But hey, he's found a step and we're rolling
05:43 He can't let this day be a one-off
05:45 But yeah
05:46 It was it was refreshing to see him actually
05:48 The the catch against it was the big one for me because he was struggling so much with any kind of contact at the catch
05:53 Point and I thought blood so gave him a pretty good shot on that one play and to still hold on to the ball and
05:58 Complete the catch. That's what he needs to do. That's what he wasn't doing last year and we looked at we said
06:02 All right. He's a rookie. This should be his point of emphasis in the offseason and
06:06 One catch doesn't erase the four or five. He hasn't made in that situation. But hey, okay, at least he can do it
06:12 And that one-on-one against Gonzalez really good
06:15 Really good rep kind of sold like a fade looking back inside and broke off outside good rep there
06:21 How much are you expecting to see from him here Thursday night?
06:25 Taekwon, yeah, I
06:28 He should play and I know it's looking like tomorrow
06:31 I'll take Parker won't play juju won't play like some of those veteran when I say veteran
06:34 I mean non rookie receivers, but he's got to play he's in a position battle
06:38 Yeah, he's in a position battle with tomorrow does cuz tomorrow Douglas is gonna play and I think tomorrow Douglas is gonna play well
06:45 So Taekwon's got to be there to go punch for punch. It's not just like it's Taekwon gonna play
06:49 He's got to play good amount. I want to see him for at least a half
06:52 So what whether or not that happens? I don't know, you know as Bill said today
06:55 They're still working on it
06:56 If you believe that I got a bridge to sell you did Dietrich wise told us after practice that he's not playing
07:02 so, you know, they figured out pretty quickly, right but I
07:06 I would hope Thornton plays a lot because we got to see a lot from him
07:10 Dietrich wise is sharing all the secrets this year told us earlier like they were taking the pads off one day
07:16 Oh, you're right. Now. We say and he's uh, he's not playing I guess
07:20 Captaincy might be in danger there. Yeah, geez Dietrich
07:24 Yeah, you mentioned pop Douglas
07:27 I mean a nasty move going on Miles Bryant and one of ones be Christian Gonzalez - I
07:34 Think he's undefeated and one on ones this summer. So Douglas
07:38 He is the last one that is undefeated because it was hunter Henry going into today and Kyle Duggar beat him pretty cleanly
07:45 Finally got him and so it is just a Mario Douglas who was undefeated. Yeah, so he's looking awesome still
07:52 Bolt up. He said one 183 that range. So yeah, so he's listed on as the roster
07:59 But he did he did put some put some muscle on there. Look like yeah, like I said, I
08:03 Having seen him at the shrine bowl seeing him now
08:06 I I said 15 pounds might be a stretch
08:08 But if you told me put on 10 or 12, which based on what he told us today is about 10
08:12 I I'd believe that he's carried it well, which is which is so big that he's still just as quick even with that added mass
08:20 Yeah, that's stop start. We keep talking about it, but he just keeps showing it very impressive working some punt returns to with Keisha on booty
08:28 He did muff one
08:30 Douglas did yeah, you see who punted that was that Beringer? I think that was Beringer. Yeah, Andrew
08:36 We'll get to it. We'll get to that later because that was some
08:40 Douglas talked about him and we'll get to that but any other that was most of the past catchers
08:46 I believe any other I know you were watching the one-on-ones there anything else kind of stand out
08:50 Yeah, we did you with the Taekwondo in on Gonzalez Jack Jones and Kendrick Bourne continue to have some really good battles
08:59 Yeah, Jack Jones got the better from today. I
09:01 oh
09:03 Some really good coverage reps by Joanne Bentley and Ramond Ray Stevenson Ramond Ray won them. It was really close, but
09:10 I two years ago wouldn't have been close at all and in just the way
09:13 Joanne Bentley's continued to develop he made that big jump in coverage last year and everybody talked about how important that was
09:20 I don't know that he's gonna make as big of a jump this year
09:22 I don't know that he could without essentially becoming like a 260 pound Fred Warner
09:26 But he does you can see that he's continued to kind of work on those coverage skills and that's big
09:31 yep, and
09:34 Jack Jones had in a good pass breakup in 11s to Matt kind of uncorked a post downfield to Kendrick Bourne and
09:41 Jack was there to break it up. So he's still involved here defensively. We talked about that yesterday
09:46 There could be a path for them just to punish him after everything that's gone on whether that's you know, Marcus Jones outside
09:53 I like guy like Isaiah Bolden, but they're
09:56 They're just keep throwing him out there and he's making some of those ball hawk plays that we saw his rookie year. So
10:02 That's just still something to monitor here as we go on and it's court dates in 10 days
10:08 so maybe get a little more clarification there, but
10:11 He's out there for now
10:14 Yeah, and and like you said that'll be I think it's the day before the second preseason game
10:18 So I don't actually don't know how that's gonna work with joint practice do the court date on zoom if you know from Green Bay
10:24 He's gonna have to come back and miss a day. I would assume he's not playing the game
10:27 But it's that that will be that that kind of snuck up on us fast
10:31 I forgot that's coming up but that's gonna be in the city see to see what happens with that because it'll it'll shape the
10:35 Conversation around him again. So it's Wednesday and Thursday next week 16th and 17th are the joint practices and then Jack's
10:43 Has this court date the 18th and then the preseason game is Saturday the 19th
10:48 So his availability kind of throughout that week will be interesting to monitor there. But um other the last
10:57 Offensive note full pass catcher note because we'll talk about the offensive line in a second
11:01 Your guy Johnny Lumpkin contact we can see him in the run game Thursday night. He shed his red non-contact jersey
11:08 So whatever that was it was only a few days and he's ready for contact on Thursday
11:12 So I guess when Greg Bedard was on the felder
11:15 He brought up Johnny Lumpkin and in Felger hadn't heard of Johnny Lumpkin before which I'm now kicking myself
11:21 Because I was on with Felger like an hour before that happened and he asked me like, oh
11:25 What other players do you want to talk about and I didn't say Johnny Lumpkin like that's
11:28 So on I would have loved to have been the person to introduce Felger to Johnny Lumpkin and I missed my chance and I'll regret
11:34 it forever
11:36 Would that be like a Felger guy or something? Does he like those?
11:39 No, he would be a Johnny Lumpkin. We would do Johnny Lumpkin on your own time
11:44 Like that's such not his guy like he would make up that. Oh, yeah, you're you know
11:48 They don't have any star receivers for you over here hyping up
11:52 Johnny Lumpkin
11:53 that's how he would like that sounds like a name him and Jim Murray would make up and I almost had like I
11:58 Wanted them to draft Jake Bobo so bad just because Felger and mask all the fans
12:03 They don't like Bobo's and I was so excited for there to be Bobo's Bobo's the people who really like Jake Bobo
12:09 But Johnny Lumpkin would have been close
12:11 Jake Bobo that would have been a good one. But um
12:15 so offensive line good news Trump Brown was
12:21 Participating in team drills not full go but he was in there for a good amount and then they just
12:27 Rotated those tackles pretty much at will economy Dermot Riley reef in there
12:32 Whether they were rotating that right with Trent that left or if Trent came out they would you know bounce around on both sides and
12:39 Even city so got some time with that kind of projected starting unit at right tackle. So Trent mentioned yesterday. It was an injury
12:48 Doesn't seem like that serious if he's out there now in full pads and then that other tackle spot
12:54 Like we're just gonna keep rotating these guys
12:56 It looks like until one of them can maybe separate from the pack a little bit
12:59 Yeah, so I'd say an encouraging sign for Trent Brown still seems like he's got a way to go, but he's building up
13:04 that's what we want to see I'd be surprised if we see him on Thursday, I
13:07 Connor McDermott Riley reef the battle continues and what I'm really curious about so Trent not practicing
13:15 It's been the right tackle battle, but Riley Reese been on the left side because they just they need the bodies. I
13:20 Would guess that's gonna be the starting tackle combination for the game is is reef on the left side McDermott on the right side
13:26 But at the same time
13:27 They got to figure out a way to to get Reese reps on the rights reps on the right side because we got to see
13:32 it
13:32 So it'll be interesting to see how that plays out. But yeah, this is gonna be a
13:35 for any line position you really need the preseason games themselves to evaluate and this is this is
13:42 This is a really our biggest chance yet to see what's going on at that right tackle spot. Yep, and that defensive line
13:49 They kind of took it to the offensive line and one-on-one battles
13:54 Speaking of those tackles Matt Judon had his first one-on-one of the summer here as you know fresh off the contractor structure
14:02 Beat Riley Reese. It wasn't a you know a dominant win
14:06 But but he still beat him and then McDermott got beat really good rep by Keon white
14:10 So those two guys losing their one-on-ones, which is something they've been kind of good out throughout the summer
14:16 We've talked like they're winning the one-on-ones then you move over to 11s and it's not always great today
14:21 It wasn't really great at either stage of practice
14:23 So Keon white big win over McDermott deep Jake Andrews - and then Devon God shall really had a nice win over Antonio Maffei
14:32 Kind of round out that that defense but David Andrews
14:37 He looks solid as ever he had a big win over Christian Barmore and Chasen Hines
14:41 I thought it was interesting he pitched in two wins, but throughout that kind of session
14:46 It was the defensive line kind of taking it to him again
14:49 And we're gonna get the answer to that question that we've been talking about a lot, which
14:54 Which way is it with with what we've seen from both the offensive and defensive lines the defensive line is good as the offensive
15:00 line this bad I think it's some of both but
15:02 we finally get to see the defensive line against for lack of a better term appropriate an appropriate level of competition and
15:10 For the offensive line. I mean it's still gonna be struggle for the offensive line. They have all backups
15:15 I don't know what more we're gonna learn about them. But for that like I know
15:18 Titus Howard got hurt I think was yesterday or today
15:21 So the Texans will be without one in their starting tackles
15:24 But for the most part we're gonna I would assume
15:26 That if CJ Stroud's playing they're gonna want to protect them as best they can
15:29 So we're gonna get we're going to get to see this defensive line finally against at least
15:33 More than half of a starting offensive line on the other side
15:37 Which is more than you can say for what's been the majority of this training camp. Yep. I saw
15:43 someone said
15:46 Bamor picked up a right guard that was yes. Yes
15:48 he gave a poor Cody Roosie the old Reggie white hump move and just kind of dumped him on his backside, but
15:56 David Andrews wasn't having that today. He had a nice win over him, but um
16:00 That was pretty much all the one-on-ones
16:03 We said again a lot of you know, the scout team work with the card throughout practice a lot of Malik Cunningham back at quarterback
16:09 So looks like we might get a good look at him, which will be fun Thursday night
16:14 Look, all right passing like the short field little rusty Aaron it out a little bit
16:19 But that that athleticism that elusiveness that'll that'll just be fun to watch on Thursday
16:24 How they kind of run that that's scout team offense with them
16:28 Yeah, I'm excited for cuz it's not we haven't really seen the Patriots run an offense like that
16:33 Yeah, and it's it's gonna be interesting seeing that they'll have speed on the field
16:37 I mean some of these guys aren't gonna make the team because they may not have the skill but him
16:40 Thyric Pitts
16:42 Trey Nixon like that's a fat as fast offense Scottie, Washington. That's a fast offense
16:46 they don't have the skill like that's not gonna be their starting offense, obviously most those guys don't make the team but
16:52 It'll be fun to watch like sometimes there's things in the preseason
16:55 I know people are gonna kind of roll their eyes at me
16:57 About this and again fell I can hear Felger do this on your own time
17:00 But there's some preseason things that are just fun
17:03 Like you're not gonna get to see like Malik Cunningham running this offense and was a yeah
17:07 Can you see that in a regular season? This is when you're gonna get to see it. It'll be fun to watch
17:10 Certain guys going off like the Ralph Webb thing Ralph Webb was never gonna make Patriots
17:15 He was never gonna make the team, but he just was a beast in that preseason
17:19 It was cool to see so I I think Malik Cunningham is gonna be that guy this year - like well
17:23 We all know deep down. It's not really it doesn't mean anything in terms of the big picture of the 2023 Patriots, but
17:29 Those preseason games, especially once you get to you know night games on Friday and Saturday
17:34 Three it can it can start to become a slog. So I think Malik Cunningham will provide a little pick-me-up
17:40 I'm trying to remember who that was last year
17:41 It was kind of a little Jordan Humphrey, but he also had a chance to make the team. He did make
17:45 Yeah, so that one was a little different. But yeah
17:48 There's always like the Crave on the block here, right?
17:51 There's always one or two guys that you know aren't gonna make the team, but they're just you happy for them
17:55 They're out there living their dream and it's fun to watch might as well have fun while you're doing it, right?
17:59 Right, if you got to go through it, you might as well have fun
18:02 But um anything else offense defense takeaways will jump to special teams here in a second
18:07 But anything else you got in from your notebook today?
18:10 I I mean they were hey, they were hang times
18:14 They were hang times today. It was another
18:18 Dominant day for Bryce Beringer. I'm trying to load my notebook. I think we talked about the cacique catch, right?
18:22 Yeah, so there was that
18:24 Taekwon had a good day. Oh
18:27 This was just really interesting and it goes back something I said before about how it feels like there may be a little ahead
18:33 of schedule
18:35 They're doing some things. I haven't seen them do in the past in camp
18:37 They did a two-minute drill where it was like a two-minute drill with the lead. So the offense had the ball
18:43 Running the ball try to kill the two minutes and the defense had to try to get the ball back
18:47 I don't recall seeing them do that kind of two-minute drill, but it was very interesting to watch
18:51 Yeah, so I had that is note. Oh and Trey Flyer is not practicing starting the season on PUP
18:56 Not surprising to me. Hey hasn't been on a football field months. It's gonna have to get in shape
19:02 Yeah, Bill kind of mentioned that this morning, right?
19:05 So like he hasn't played in a while, which I think I are with that foot injury in September
19:11 I think he only played like 60 snaps for Miami last year. So he's on he's on the pup list here
19:16 Bill said didn't expect him to practice anytime soon. He's got a kind of work back into things. So
19:21 maybe we'll see him at some point down the line this summer, but
19:25 Who knows that's what Trey Flowers is that but let's get into that specialist stuff
19:31 Kickers or punters where you want to start?
19:34 Let's start the kicker
19:36 So it was it was Ryland's day after a full candle that yesterday
19:41 He was three for four with like a live
19:44 Rush quote-unquote if you want to call it and then he had another mate kind of from deep
19:49 With just that snapper and the holder all to be about in that
19:53 45 50 yard range and I think his miss was just a little wide right so
19:58 Him and folk they're pretty they're pretty consistent with just like three four four four five days here going back and forth
20:05 Yeah, it's still just
20:08 Ryland hitting a 45-yard field goal looks a lot different than Nick Fulk hitting a 45-yard field
20:12 All right, Ryland puts it through when it's three quarters away at the uprights fulcrum 45
20:16 You're holding on to the edge of your seat. So I still have the edge to Ryland the strong edge to Ryland
20:20 Yeah, and he was kickoffs today because they're just alternating days both of those jobs. It looks like so yeah
20:27 Yeah, the ball just at the height the distance
20:31 Just see it off the foot a little bit. It's just more Ryland and then
20:36 Berenger still the top holder throughout that and then he was booming the ball
20:40 Again today. I know you have the hang times, but I want to we'll play a little video because Alex asked Mario Douglas
20:48 Who was returning today and he had that month and he caught that one in the in stadium from Berenger the other night
20:54 Which is like 65 yards and he had a run backwards
20:57 And you'll see his reaction when we when you ask him about Berenger. It's the same reaction I have but we'll play it here quick
21:06 Tell us along those lines. Well, can you tell us about Bryce Berenger?
21:09 What have you learned about him just kind of how to call the read?
21:11 Yeah, he kicked that he I say, uh, we got two good partners
21:14 So one with left foot and one with a right, you know
21:16 Uh, so going with both of them I see see so when ever we have a different team with you know
21:23 Whatever kicker I'll be prepared
21:25 So, um, I say both of our kickers Bryce right leg you boots that thing and you know, Corley's left leg kicks it
21:35 So
21:36 As he said he boots that thing, right?
21:39 So so Beringer boots it waitman kicks it you can tell at the beginning there because I asked him
21:44 specifically because I asked
21:47 Beringer about this like you're doing anything different. There's all these enough punts. How does the ball come off your foot?
21:52 and he's like I can't control it it does what it does, but I
21:55 Think he's trying to keep some of the company secrets in-house there, but you could tell right away tomorrow Douglas
22:02 He caught himself. You don't remember there were two punters, but
22:05 He boots that thing so and he's not wrong he's not wrong. Yeah, he's awesome
22:11 I did you have the hang times you want to read them? I
22:13 I don't have him in front of me. But but I know
22:16 They're in there maxed out at four eight two today. I think waitman maxed out about four six
22:22 There were no five plus bombs, but no, but it was it was the drill they were doing they were working on kicking out of
22:28 The end zone. So that's a quick release. You're not gonna you're not gonna get a five second hang time from that spot
22:32 You're you're prioritizing distance over over height on those kicks
22:36 Yeah
22:36 But still looks like that rookie duo is in the lead here things would need to go really south really quickly for them to probably
22:44 Get past but I think that kind of wraps up, you know today's practice
22:48 So we will get into a little more preview for Thursday's game here in a second
22:53 But let's hear from our good pals over at fan duel before we do so

23:27 So visit fan dual comm slash Boston and start earning bonus bets with America's number one sports book
23:35 That's fan dual comm slash, Boston
23:38 All right, so preseason opener Thursday night
23:46 Again doesn't look like we'll see Mac or many of those front line starters
23:50 But I guess right out of the gate is any guys that you're like really watching closely here as we kick things off
23:57 Well, it's funny all the Bailey's happy people are finally gonna get to hear some Patriots starting quarterback Bailey's after so enjoy it
24:04 Well, you can it for me
24:06 Given like you said the guys that we don't think are gonna play some of those top line guys
24:10 There's there's two called three spots. I'm really looking at three things
24:14 I'm really looking at first off that right tackle position which we already kind of discussed the battle between Connor McDermott
24:20 Riley reef can city Sal maybe get himself in that conversation. We'll find out but
24:25 First real chance to evaluate them. The second thing I'm looking at another position battle wide receiver
24:31 Taekwon Thornton to Mario Douglas you want to throw Keisha on booty in there. I think that's totally fair but
24:37 Tomorrow, it's tomorrow Doug's and booty. It's their first live NFL rep. So that will tell us a lot
24:41 Can Thornton build off the day he had today?
24:43 It's we don't know it's wide open to me between those three guys
24:49 I had a rank him I would go and this is all things considered just in terms of how I think the team's looking at
24:54 him right now
24:55 Douglas Thornton booty, but it's all super close that could all completely change by the time, you know
25:00 Thursday night rolls around but I think seeing those guy Thornton needs to play
25:04 I I know some of the more veteran receivers aren't playing but he's a guy that's got to play
25:08 Yeah, I think we learn a lot about how those three stack up on Thursday night the final thing just just rookies
25:15 you know Christian is always against a will Robert Woods play will
25:19 Nico Collins play we get to see him against some experienced NFL wide receivers
25:24 I want to see Keon white how he handles contact how he handles a full physical game
25:30 I think he's a guy that that will get spotlight a lot Marte Mopu. Where are they using him? How are they using him?
25:34 I'd love to see him get some coverage reps on Dalton Schultz. I think that would be super informative
25:41 I'd like to see maybe spy CJ Stroud a little bit see how he looks in that role how comfortably looks in that role and
25:46 then obviously
25:48 Tomorrow Douglas who I talked about I think those are the rookies that'll be spotlighted
25:52 Yeah, how much do you think we'll see Mopu because he's still in that red non-contact Jersey. Yeah, so that that's fair
25:59 I I'm not sure
26:01 I'd like to see it. I'm not I I'm kind of
26:04 There's been times in the past where guys have been in a red church
26:07 Non-contact gone out play in the preseason game and then just been in the red non-contact on the other side like coming out of the
26:13 game, so
26:14 Maybe he's limited. I'm not entirely sure but if he does play I think it could be a really informative night in terms of
26:20 What their plan is for him this year? Yeah, I hope we got to see him
26:24 But um, you pretty much nailed like the big three there other ones like the right tackle will obviously
26:30 Be the headline on that old line, but there's a ton of like depth pieces along the interior
26:36 Obviously, they drafted a bunch of guys. So there's not room for everyone
26:40 So seeing if one of those maybe it's a Cody Rousey or one of these, you know
26:44 Jake Andrews or Antonio Maffi can separate themselves from the rest of the bunch here because
26:49 We had him like nine O linemen, so there's not room for everyone
26:54 That competition will be good and then the running backs Kevin Harris Pierre strong
26:59 They still haven't brought anyone in can one of these guys kind of separate
27:03 Become that number two spell back here and maybe say hey, we don't need to go out as Eke Elliot or something like that
27:10 So seeing good games good performances from them run game past game
27:15 I would be an encouraging sign here to start up a preseason. I think that's a really good point Brian
27:20 Honestly, we've talked about and I just had Bob Soce on the 98 5 the sports of Patriots podcast
27:25 And we talked a little bit about the running back position
27:28 Actually, I think we had this conversation after so me and Bob do a podcast as we do continue the conversation after
27:33 But this is kind of a big chance for you know, we've talked about in Leonard Fournette Ezekiel Elliot, maybe Dalvin cook
27:40 I still don't think that's happening. But
27:42 This is kind of a big chance for for either Kevin Harris and or Pierre strong to step up and say
27:47 You don't need to sign another running back. I can be the number two guy. I can make plays a
27:53 Really big chance because those guys I don't think either of them have been bad so far in camp. They have
27:58 But I don't think you them have been good either
28:00 There hasn't been a lot to get excited about from either one. They've just kind of been there which you know
28:05 For third or fourth running back is in a bad trade, especially guys entering the second year
28:09 But they're trying to replace Damien Harris who was a true number two running back
28:12 So they they do need if one of those guys isn't gonna emerge they are gonna need a sign another running back
28:17 They may need to anyway, but it could be the difference between signing
28:21 Ezekiel Elliot or Leonard Fournette to be your second back versus you know
28:26 Stronger Harris becomes your second back and then you're signing, you know
28:28 CJ Marable some guy out of the
28:30 USFL to just be a depth guy. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean there hasn't been I feel like there haven't been
28:38 too much like run heavy like opportunities for them to really impress so far, but
28:45 Yeah, if one of them can really have a good preseason game here
28:49 Then maybe you lead into it next week with a good couple joint practices and just say hey like we got it
28:56 we can we can take this this bigger role on that that would be really encouraging out of the backfield because
29:01 We've said it so much. They need someone there to take some of that
29:05 You know workload off from Andre Stevenson and I like here strong his speed
29:11 Fantastic. They can get it out there. Kevin Harris just seems like a kind of like a Damien Harris
29:18 Just one of those efficient running run. Yeah, so if one of them can do it that that would be awesome
29:23 Especially rookie contracts on rookie contracts and things like that
29:27 Yeah, exactly. Yep
29:30 but um
29:32 Those are pretty much big things big things. I'm watching obviously kickers and punters get in that stadium
29:38 I don't I think it's gonna be I think it's gonna be a good good weather night Thursday, but
29:43 seeing live action how in that new stadium with the scoreboard will be interested and hopefully we can
29:50 Talk to maybe some of the returners after see how the ball flutters and things like that
29:54 I think it's actually supposed to rain Thursday night. Just was gonna say yeah, it looks like some rain
29:59 So even to make that a little more interesting on the win 14 mile an hour winds, so
30:04 We'll say
30:07 Stakes are high. I'm guessing it'll be the rookies for that
30:11 I don't think they have to see Nick Falken the preseason or anything. So I'd expect Ryland and Berenger there say yeah
30:18 Yep
30:19 So any last preseason thoughts before we can get into some fun stuff with some rookie numbers here now
30:26 Let's hear from LinkedIn and then get into that. All right, I

31:51 All right, so the first preseason game also marks the last time
31:58 The first time rookies get new numbers. They'll ditch their 50s and 60s
32:03 So I have a little fun to end here and go through and try to predict
32:07 I think Christian Gonzalez is an easy zero right? No one. I'm gonna give you a hot take Brian. I don't really
32:13 I don't think he's getting zero not now. I think they're gonna like wait till the regular season. I
32:20 would
32:22 Remind people if you're waiting for tomorrow or Thursday or whenever it is to go rush out and buy the jersey
32:27 Christian bar more or 70 as a rookie in the preseason later switched to 90 Jack Jones was 34
32:33 Switched to 13 for the regular season that one might have been a downgrade, but he made it work
32:37 so the numbers aren't finalized because guys are gonna get cut and guys will still switch and I
32:42 Just don't think Christian is also gonna get zero for the preseason. I don't think he is
32:47 I don't think any rookies are gonna get any single-digit numbers until they actually make the team
32:51 So what does that leave with for Christian Gonzalez? I I don't know
32:57 Yeah, maybe something so 30s available
33:00 That would be the only one with a zero in it. So maybe 30 right because 20s retired 40s retired
33:07 What it what else even would he be eligible for? I mean, they're not gonna reissue 12
33:12 That's I guess in theory he could take
33:16 7 14 17 or 19
33:20 Because those are guys who aren't definitely gonna make the team
33:23 Who you can have two guys with the same number as long as they're on opposite sides of the ball
33:28 So maybe something like that
33:31 Yeah, I'm gonna say
33:33 37 if you're not going zero, then I'd say 30
33:36 I'm gonna say 30 or I
33:39 Maybe come on comers too much of a lock at 14. So I'm gonna say 30 17 or 19 for all just on
33:47 Oh good keel keel and white could wear six right if it's just Nick full
33:53 Unless they want to have him on the field goal unit
33:56 Because so so when I say different sides the ball with the rule really is is you can't have
34:00 two guys on the field with same number at the same time
34:02 So I I think Keon white's a guy who does kind of project as a field goal unit player. Yeah
34:08 I wonder if like
34:11 76 I know Calvin Anderson has it but like I could see him in 76. He's a guy again like like Christian Barmore
34:18 I could see it maybe in the 70s 72 73 something like that
34:21 I
34:22 Also feel like he'd look cool in 99 big defensive lineman, but I know you're probably saving that one. So yeah, I'm saving that
34:29 Yeah, he would look good in that one. But uh, yeah
34:32 Mapu I think he looks pretty good in 52. I know he wore
34:38 What the like NFL PA Bowl or whatever that just got canceled actually today that he played in he wore 54
34:47 so I
34:49 Think he was five in college, right? But that's my peppers
34:53 So I think I was going like 52 stay in 52 or maybe 54
34:58 Every year there's one guy that keeps his number of the like the rookie class now
35:04 I could see Keon white at the end of the day keeping 51. He's gonna change out of it
35:07 I could see him going back to it
35:08 But if anybody else look they like giving 54 to linebackers after brusque
35:12 They gave it to high tower after briefs didn't guard with Brian waters
35:15 But I think 52 or 54 for mop who make a lot of sense
35:19 Yeah, I I think one of those two because if I would be sick, but he's not getting five and
35:24 Actually, I'll give you one more I could see with him. This is he's not gonna get us in the preseason
35:29 I wonder if he were 15 in the regular season assuming waitman doesn't make the team. Yeah, I could see that
35:35 Definitely, although 30 30 could work from to some people point out in the chat. That one's not taken
35:40 Then so I had I
35:44 Went Jake Andrews back to 55 which he wore at Troy and then Moffy. He's not gonna get 55
35:51 Really? Why not? Because Josh who chase too much of an established player if they're gonna double up and be with an established player. I
35:57 Wasn't even thinking I can I could see Andrews staying at 53. Yeah, I could see that
36:03 And then I had Moffy he wore 56 in college. So that seems that's retired. That's
36:12 Pseudo retired. It's not retired. It should be they don't issue it anymore
36:15 It's not officially retired, but nobody's worn it since Andre Tippett
36:18 Having are both retired. So where do you have?
36:21 Well, so Sal will probably go somewhere in the 70s
36:25 mafia
36:28 give me
36:30 68 for Antonio Maffei
36:32 6 we writing these down or we keeping track of these we're gonna see you get some more than right
36:35 Somebody somebody go back through all this and just tweet the list out and let us know who won at the end of the day
36:42 I
36:43 Our viewers are awesome. Somebody's gonna do it. All right, we'll see it
36:46 Even though half the numbers I listed are retired apparently, but I'll catch it if you give one that doesn't work
36:53 all right, booty I
36:55 was thinking
36:58 81
37:01 Yeah, he's probably gonna have to go in the 80s right you know what actually I
37:08 Like 83 for him. I like 83 for him. I don't know. He's got a little Dion branch in his game
37:12 Well, but I went I went Douglas 83
37:16 Because he wore three in college and booty was one. So I just added an eight. That's how I did that but I
37:24 So I'll give you mine on Douglas in a second. I
37:27 The thing that scares me with booty if he makes the team Scotty Washington's not gonna make the team booty could be a guy
37:33 That wears 17. Oh, yeah, and I don't love that like regular sees he's not gonna get it right now
37:38 - Mario Douglas should be number 80
37:40 punt returner
37:42 Small wiggly wide receiver Troy Brown's got to go to him and like pass the baton. I need to see I
37:49 Maybe even more than I need to see Gonzales in zero and like 19 or 17 would suck for him
37:56 30 maybe like that's a little bit easier to swallow. He's not getting 24
38:00 I know people want that Joshua Bledsoe's keeping that but like I would take Christian Gonzalez in a weird number
38:06 Before like like I would take to Mario Douglas in 80 if it means Christian is also in a weird number if there is one
38:12 Number I need I know you have yours. We're gonna get to we'll call this one like the lock
38:16 We get two points if we get this right making up the rules as we go
38:18 I need to Mario Douglas in number 80. That would be sick. That would be yeah
38:23 You're on the right track with 83. You're on the right track
38:27 I was I was at 80 or 83, but I just you were three so I
38:31 Know that's probably that's probably a good guess
38:35 Yeah, still that slot number. So
38:38 Who is 13 right now?
38:40 Jack Jones who is oh
38:42 13. Oh, no 13 Jack 13 Jack
38:45 This is an interesting one
38:49 30 for Douglas give him that kind of hybrid
38:53 That could be interesting because he is gonna do some running back type stuff. All right, I you know what I could see that
38:59 But no, I want him in 80. Yeah
39:01 80 number would be best for him
39:04 Speed and Bolden. I was like that same type of thing with Gonzales. There's are many numbers really
39:10 To go around there. I
39:13 Was gonna say if Gonzales is zero
39:15 I had Bolden and 30 because I think he wore three again or he was like 23
39:20 But he also wore three in high school. I think so. I went 30. Yeah, I
39:24 Don't need I could I don't even know what's what speed would wear because he was
39:29 Six at Michigan State and nine at Georgia, I believe so. Those are obviously taken
39:34 But I would say you're probably looking at 30 and 37 for those two either way. They're both they're both open
39:39 Yep, so that would make sense there
39:42 Malik
39:45 This is a quarterback technically. That's gonna be an interesting
39:48 They're gonna have to double up on numbers
39:52 Good. We're tiny is 20 a quarterback number. I would retire
39:57 22 is Doug Flutie, but 20s retired
39:59 22 no 22
40:03 Yeah, Malik Cunningham's gonna be tricky
40:09 He could be like a
40:14 15 or 17 with one of those get like three or five
40:20 You
40:22 You cut out there you got me
40:29 Got you now, all right. Yeah, it's gonna be tough. Okay, Doug Cunningham. This is kind of getting tough. This is getting tricky
40:38 Maybe like 15. I'm not waiting. Yeah, I think so. Maybe I could see that
40:48 And
40:50 Then maybe he gets 19
40:53 think or he like
40:56 Maybe I wouldn't rule out I I wouldn't rule out
41:03 Cunningham getting a number in the 80s and then just playing quarterback. I wouldn't roll that out either
41:08 More fun, right and more fun to the right exactly. Yeah
41:16 Riley he likes gonna get some number in the 40s
41:20 Rylan could have had a number in the 40s. So kickers can wear 0 to 49 in the 99
41:26 They're pretty 90 to 99. Sorry
41:29 So 40 is open 40 is the only number in the full retired retired cheese
41:36 If so, they're gonna have to double up there
41:38 94 is open
41:42 That's true
41:44 that could be like
41:46 Justice to by or I could see him staying at 68 honestly, or it could be Chad Ryland
41:52 That would be fun
41:55 Yeah
41:56 94 and 99 the dynamic duo because Bryce Berenger is going back to 99 just to complete the look
42:03 Maybe it look like college football
42:10 But um, I think unless you have one for Thyrac Pitts, I think those were all the rookies
42:15 Oh, yeah, I fire it pits might still worse
42:17 That's the other thing we forgot about it some numbers will open up like I'm scrolling the roster like 67 will open up for the
42:24 Lineman, right cuz Thyrac Pitts is changing his number
42:26 Yeah, 50 will open up for the linemen because because Christian here for linebackers
42:31 Maybe Marte Mop who wears 50 because Christian Gonzalez obviously won't have it anymore
42:34 So it all juggles but my bolt my bold prediction is Gonzalez does not get zero for the preseason
42:40 I think he might get it for the regular season, but not for the preseason and
42:42 I need to see - Mario Douglas in 80. Those are my two big number takes those would be awesome
42:47 Well, Douglas Douglas would be cool
42:50 I want Gonzalez in zero, but I could see the way they don't do that right away
42:54 But as long as Berenger gets 99, I'll be happy because that'll be awesome
42:59 But um, so we need we need Beringer in 99 and we need Douglas in 80
43:03 I will say and then we'll be all set. We'll just be good for will be good for the rest of the summer
43:07 But um, yeah, so they should get those
43:10 Will either announce them tomorrow or like Thursday morning before before it's usually like Thursday early afternoon
43:19 Yeah, so we'll be on the lookout for those but
43:24 Believe that'll do it for us here tonight
43:27 We'll be back sometime to break down the game or there might be another training camp practice added to the mix here
43:34 Before they leave for Green Bay
43:36 But in the meantime
43:38 You can go follow Alex on twitter at real Alex Barth and go read all his training camp coverage over at 95
43:43 He sports hub calm and follow me on twitter at I am Brian Hines and go read all my training camp coverage over at Pat's pulpit
43:51 And thank you all as always for tuning in and we will see you guys sometime
