Australian National University staff went on a half-day strike on Thursday, July 27. Union members are calling for a cap on the number of casual staff employed by the university as they do not have access to paid sick leave and parental leave. Staff gathered at Kambri then marched to the Chancelry buildings.

00:08 My name is Lina, I'm currently on five different contracts at the ANU.
00:14 Shame!
00:15 Five different contracts and no job security.
00:18 Shame!
00:19 I want to tell all the students in this group that most of your teachers are casual teachers.
00:26 Shame!
00:27 My name is Mijan Pintos Lopez and I'm the NTEU ANU branch president.
00:31 This is the first time ANU staff have been on strike in 24 years, which is significant
00:35 and should be recognised and appreciated by senior management.
00:39 We're only 75 years old, so one third of ANU's history there hasn't been industrial action,
00:44 except for today.
00:45 We're fed up and we're ready for better conditions.
00:47 When I say union, you say power!
00:50 Union!
00:51 Power!
00:52 Union!
00:53 Power!
00:54 I'm hoping to see the commitment from the ANU to reduce its reliance on casual staff.
00:58 I'm hoping to see the creation of a significant amount of new jobs that are open for casual
01:02 staff to apply for, to increase their access to job security.
01:06 I'm hoping to see better superannuation contributions for casual staff, because we know it's important.
01:12 I'm hoping to see gender affirmation leave.
01:16 I'm hoping to see some form of sick leave entitlement.
01:20 It's insane that they don't have it at the moment.

01:35 So, I think they're frustrated, but I think that there's a good sense that after the strike
01:37 today, it'll be the final push that the ANU senior management needs for us to be signed
01:42 away on an agreement fairly soon.
