00:03 On to the explosive final weekend of this Dauphiné.
00:18 Stage 7 is part 1 of a big GC battle featuring
00:21 two iconic climbs, the Col de la Madeleine
00:24 and the Col de la Coix de Fer.
00:25 The question is, will Jonas Vingegaard
00:27 be going for glory or just controlling his rivals?
00:30 Do you want to win that stage as well?
00:32 We know you're greedy.
00:34 No, I don't want to say I'm greedy.
00:36 I just like to race and it depends on everything.
00:41 Yeah, maybe we go for it and maybe we
00:44 don't, depends on everything.
00:48 The day looks unstoppable, but anything
00:50 can happen in a bike race.
00:52 You always hope that you can go win the race.
00:55 You know, Jonas is obviously one of the best in the world,
00:57 so it's going to be a little tricky.
00:59 But yeah, you have hope and you'll
01:03 find out on top of quite a fur how we stand.
01:09 Today's more like a traditional Mario stage
01:10 and tomorrow's kind of a kamikaze last day with people
01:14 with nothing to lose.
01:15 So for sure both days are going to be super hard.
01:18 And like I keep saying, hopefully I just have good legs.
01:24 Over 4,000 meters of climbing on this super Saturday
01:27 with just under 150K to cover.
01:30 It starts with the Col du Molain, a whopping 25K
01:33 at over 6%.
01:35 After sweeping into the valley, the riders
01:36 will tackle the 18 and 1/2 kilometers of the Col du
01:39 Molain at 5.8% before hiking to the finish line
01:43 at the top of the Quatre Feres, 13.1K at 6.2%.
01:47 It's a big day for Wim Gegaer, who
01:49 is hoping to buck the recent trend of the race winner only
01:52 taking yellow on the final weekend.
01:54 In the past 10 editions, only Chris Froome and Geraint
01:56 Thomas managed to keep hold of their lead in the last two
01:59 days.
02:00 Last year, Primoz Roglic took yellow from Wout Van Aert
02:02 on the Saturday before winning on the Sunday.
02:05 There was only one rider leading solo after the Madeleine,
02:12 and that was Victor Campenaerts of Lotto Destiny, the Belgian,
02:15 the last man standing from the early breakaway.
02:19 Behind him were three chasers, Anthony Perez
02:22 from Cofidis, Tobias Beyer of Alpecin de Koenig,
02:25 and Anton Charming from Uno-X. But they were already
02:28 trailing by a minute and 20 seconds.
02:32 Pierre Latorre had made several attempts
02:33 to attack from the peloton, becoming
02:35 the virtual king of the mountains
02:36 at the summit of La Madeleine.
02:38 But the Frenchman was caught by the peloton,
02:40 along with Guglielmi, Villamot, and Thompson,
02:42 as they approached the Col du Molain.
02:45 Campenaerts leading the way into the final 40K,
02:47 embarking on the Molain as Perez was
02:49 dropped from the chase group.
02:52 Jumbo-Visma just policing things in the peloton,
02:54 but they were in no major hurry to catch Campenaerts.
02:57 The INEOS Grenadier is also up there
02:59 after setting the tempo on La Madeleine.
03:02 The peloton was soon cut down to a yellow jersey group
03:05 with the average speed since the start over 36 kilometers
03:08 an hour.
03:08 Slowly but surely, they closed the gap, first of all,
03:17 swallowing up Beyer and Charming.
03:21 Campenaerts making his solitary way up the Col du Molain,
03:24 4K from the summit.
03:25 His lead was down to a minute and 20,
03:28 and it would just keep tumbling.
03:30 The Belgian ruler, nevertheless, showing he's also
03:32 got very solid climbing legs by making it to the summit
03:35 30 seconds clear of the bunch.
03:37 And with 30 points today, he is our new king of the mountains.
03:40 The descent wasn't really long enough for Campenaerts
03:47 to open up a new gap, in spite of him taking a few risks.
03:50 And he was eventually caught on the lower
03:52 slopes of the final climb.
03:54 Jumbo-Visma in control as they hit the Quatre Ferres
03:56 with around 40 riders that's still in this front group.
04:01 Wingergaard's teammates then up the tempo
04:03 in one of the steepest sections.
04:05 Attila Wouter going so hard here that he
04:06 found himself all alone.
04:10 Several riders going backwards.
04:13 Wingergaard himself coming across
04:14 with the rest of the favorites, but they wouldn't
04:16 be on his wheel for very long.
04:19 [INAUDIBLE]
04:21 Big attack from the yellow jersey.
04:24 And Yates just looks round, and he has no answer whatsoever.
04:28 Wingergaard soaring away to another victory
04:35 with everybody else scrambling to organize the chase.
04:38 Adam Yates was looking like the best of the rest
04:40 in solo second place.
04:44 Ben O'Connor was a little bit further back in a chase group
04:47 trying to defend his place on the podium.
04:51 With Wingergaard approaching the summit,
04:53 Jai Hindley attacked from the O'Connor group,
04:55 but he wouldn't quite manage to make it up to Yates.
04:58 A fascinating battle for the final two podium spots
05:01 in prospect, while Wingergaard could already
05:03 start celebrating.
05:06 Three weeks today.
05:08 This rider has an appointment with a grand depart.
05:12 The dress rehearsal has gone perfectly.
05:16 Stage seven, Jonas Wingergaard.
05:19 Wingergaard picking up his second win of the week.
05:27 So tomorrow he'll be going for another hat trick,
05:29 like in Gran Camino and Basque Country earlier this year.
05:33 The 26-year-old looking on stellar form ahead of his Tour
05:35 de France title defense in July.
05:37 Now he just has to finish the job at the Dauphiné on Sunday.
05:44 I felt good today and I wanted to go for the stage as well.
05:47 And the boys really worked hard for me all day today.
05:50 And we had the plan to go for it.
05:53 And I'm really happy to take the win and to pay it off in the end.
05:59 Wingergaard coming in 41 seconds clear of Yates
06:02 to take his 10th victory of 2023.
06:04 Hindley came in just ahead of O'Connor
06:06 with the impressive max pull leading in the rest
06:09 at a minute and 10 seconds.
06:13 Wingergaard goes into the final day
06:15 with a sizable lead of two minutes 11.
06:17 But there are only 25 seconds separating Yates, O'Connor,
06:20 and Hindley in the battle for second and third.
06:23 No change in the points classification.
06:28 After his two stage victories, Christophe Laporte
06:30 is set to win the green jersey ahead of Matteo Trentin.
06:33 He has a comfortable lead of 20 points
06:35 with Julian Alaphilippe in third.
06:38 We do have a new king of the mountains,
06:40 though, a fine effort from Campenaerts,
06:41 the day's most aggressive rider.
06:43 He is now nine points ahead of Le Tour,
06:45 but Wingergaard is third with lots more points on offer tomorrow.
06:49 The white jersey also changes shoulders, going to Poole.
06:52 The British rider just a solitary second ahead of Carlos Rodriguez
06:55 with Tobias Johannesson also in the mix.
06:58 We round out with another big day in the Alps,
07:07 six climbs and almost 4000 metres of elevation gain
07:11 heading from Le Pont de Clé to La Bastille.
07:13 Wingergaard will be looking to follow in the footsteps
07:15 of his team-mate Roglic and win his first Criterium du Tauphiné.
07:19 So do join us again on Sunday to see if he can manage it.
07:22 And thanks for watching.
