00:01:33Good morning, Mr. Wiggins.
00:01:34Alice, one of these mornings I'm going to get the mail
00:01:36before you can snatch it away.
00:01:39As far as I'm concerned, you didn't even have to stop today.
00:01:42Your army captain don't write very regular, does he?
00:01:45It's been eight days.
00:01:47That long?
00:01:48Well, I could have sworn it was only a week.
00:01:51Let's see, last time he wrote, he was stationed in Florida.
00:01:55Idaho.
00:01:56The letter before came from Florida.
00:01:58Oh, that's right, that's right, yeah.
00:01:59The army sure keeps Cabin Boss moving around.
00:02:02Well, he knows more about electronics
00:02:04than any man they've got.
00:02:05You don't say.
00:02:07Why, before he was transferred,
00:02:08he set up a whole radar system around Lockheed.
00:02:10No kidding.
00:02:11And since then, the army's just been shipping Jim
00:02:13all over the country.
00:02:15It seems to me they ain't leaving much
00:02:16for the other nine million men in service.
00:02:19I didn't mean that.
00:02:21And besides, you've heard all this before.
00:02:24A hundred times.
00:02:26But all I can say is, this young Edison
00:02:28must be a pretty wonderful guy
00:02:30to have a girl like you, Alice.
00:02:33It's me that's lucky.
00:02:35Well, here's hoping you get luckier.
00:02:37And maybe when Cabin Boss finishes wiring up
00:02:41the state of Kentucky, they'll give him a furlough.
00:02:45Kentucky?
00:02:46He's not in Kentucky.
00:02:48No?
00:02:49Well, that's a Kentucky postmark if I ever seen one.
00:02:53Oh, Mr. Wiggins, I hate you.
00:02:54He is in Kentucky.
00:02:57See you tomorrow, Mr. Wiggins.
00:02:59Heh, heh, heh.

00:03:41On your feet, boss.
00:03:42We need some help.
00:03:43The metal detector's gone dead on us.
00:03:45There must be somebody else around here who can fix it.
00:03:48Why don't you guys give me a rest?
00:03:50Because your work's better.
00:03:52And the price fits the prison budget.
00:03:56Who says I can fix it?
00:03:57Well, if you can't, genius, we'd just better close up shop.
00:04:01Come on, let's keep the warden happy.
00:04:12That ought to do it.
00:04:22Try this wrench.
00:04:32Thanks, boss.
00:04:33It's all right, lieutenant.
00:04:34Call me anytime.
00:04:35That is, anytime in the next four years and 12 days.
00:04:38You can head back to the rest of the men.
00:04:57Hey, Joe, when are you getting out?
00:05:01Tomorrow morning, 5 o'clock.
00:05:03Don't forget your promise.
00:05:04Don't mail this letter till you get to Maryland.
00:05:07Wouldn't it be easier to tell this chick her captain's a jailbird?
00:05:10You ain't the first guy that's wiped government property.
00:05:13Oh, shut up.
00:05:14Just mail the letter.
00:05:15Okay, okay.
00:05:23What does Jim have to say, Alice?
00:05:25All the things I want him to say, Mother.
00:05:27That's nice.
00:05:32Anything about his coming home, dear?
00:05:36No.
00:05:37They've transferred him again.
00:05:39To Maryland.
00:05:42You'd think with the way they've been working him,
00:05:44they'd give him a furlough.
00:05:48From the way he writes, he doesn't even expect one.
00:05:51Not that he complains.
00:05:53So I guess I shouldn't.
00:05:56Mother, Alice!
00:05:58Did you hear?
00:05:59On the radio.
00:06:00They're talking about a bomb they just dropped in Japan.
00:06:03They think it'll end the war.
00:06:06This unprecedented and historic announcement of an atom bomb.
00:06:10A nuclear weapon releasing energies in unbelievable amounts.
00:06:14Dwarfing by hundreds of times the force of conventional explosives.
00:06:18Fragmentary reports heard on the Tokyo radio,
00:06:21hint of great devastation in the city of Hiroshima.
00:06:24The strategic target area selected by the Allied Command.
00:06:28For the awesome bomb's first use against the enemy.
00:06:31And it is more than barely possible, say reliable reports,
00:06:35that this new and fearfully destructive atomic weapon
00:06:38will bring Japan's warlords to their knees.
00:06:43Oh, Mom.
00:06:45Maybe this is the end of it.
00:06:47Maybe it'll bring Jim home.
00:06:49Honey, I hope so.
00:06:51Hey, what's the matter with you, boss?
00:06:53Don't you know the war's over?
00:06:55So what's it going to get you?
00:06:57A bowl of rice and a free ride on the Emperor's white horse?
00:07:00Or maybe you wish we lost the war.
00:07:02I lost the war during my court-martial.
00:07:10I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:07:12I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:07:14I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:07:16I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:07:18I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:07:20I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
00:07:27Hello, Jim.
00:07:28Chaplain.
00:07:29Sit down, Jim.
00:07:30I want to talk to you about your future.
00:07:32Future?
00:07:34Aren't you being a little premature, Chaplain?
00:07:36You can start thinking about it right now.
00:07:38That's why I sent for you.
00:07:40You're leaving.
00:07:43You mean they're letting me out of here?
00:07:45The President has reviewed your case.
00:07:48He feels that many boys like you,
00:07:50uprooted from normal lives, rushed into the Army,
00:07:53might have made mistakes they wouldn't have made otherwise.
00:07:56The mistake I made was taking little Army equipment.
00:07:59But nobody blames the Army.
00:08:00Captains pay at that.
00:08:02Don't try to justify what you did, Jim.
00:08:04You can't.
00:08:06No more than you can excuse what you did
00:08:08as a student at that school down in Los Angeles.
00:08:11I was just a kid then.
00:08:13So were the others who trusted you with the class funds.
00:08:16I told you I paid it back, every cent of it.
00:08:22I'm not as concerned with the Jim Voss who came in here
00:08:25as I am with the Jim Voss who's going out there to a new life.
00:08:33You've always taken the easy path, Jim,
00:08:35and found reasons for it.
00:08:37But they were never truthful reasons.
00:08:39And you just can't compromise with the truth.
00:08:42There'll be a lot of times out there
00:08:44when the going will get rough.
00:08:46But then you must question your decision.
00:08:48Ask yourself, is this what is right
00:08:51or is this what is easy?
00:08:53Don't worry, Chaplain.
00:08:55I appreciate this break.
00:08:57I'll protect it.
00:08:59Are you going to start out by telling that girl?
00:09:02Tell her what?
00:09:05I... I know about those letters
00:09:08you've been sneaking out of here.
00:09:10Letters signed by a captain on active duty.
00:09:13Oh, those.
00:09:16I just didn't want to hurt Alice with it.
00:09:18With the truth?
00:09:20She'll have to know sooner or later, Jim.
00:09:23For one thing, you won't be going home as a captain.
00:09:26You'll be just a private.
00:09:28But what is more important,
00:09:30is she's half the girl you think she is.
00:09:32You owe it to her.
00:09:34It's a pretty tough assignment.
00:09:36Yes. You might even lose it.
00:09:39You might even lose her.
00:09:42But it's a lot easier to bear the setbacks
00:09:44if you know you've approached them
00:09:46with honesty and courage.
00:09:49You're right, of course, Chaplain.
00:09:52Good luck, Jim.
00:09:55Thank you, Chaplain.
00:09:58Yeah. Yeah, it won't be too long.
00:10:00All right.
00:10:02Oh, uh...
00:10:04Alice, there's something else I have to tell you.
00:10:07You've told me everything you have to for now, darling.
00:10:10You're coming home. That's all that matters.
00:10:13Why, even your decorations don't count.
00:10:19I'm sorry, Jim.
00:10:22I'm sorry.
00:10:24Why, even your decorations don't count.
00:10:28My decorations?
00:10:30Now, don't tell me the Army hasn't just loaded you down
00:10:32with medals for what you've done.
00:10:34By the way, what do I call you now, Major Voss?
00:10:38No.
00:10:40No, no promotions. It's...
00:10:42still captain.
00:10:54Alice, it's Jim.
00:10:56Hiya, Helen. Who is it?
00:10:58Good to see you.
00:11:09Oh, I thought you'd never get here.
00:11:13I had to fight a million other guys for train space.
00:11:16You're back. That's the important thing.
00:11:19I'm glad you're back.
00:11:21You're back. That's the important thing.
00:11:23Mrs. Park.
00:11:25Hello, Jim. Welcome home.
00:11:29Wow! Look at all those medals.
00:11:32What are all those stars?
00:11:34They're, uh... battle stars, Helen.
00:11:37Alice never told us you were overseas.
00:11:39Where were you?
00:11:44What was it like? You didn't get wounded, did you?
00:11:47Give him a chance, Helen. One question at a time.
00:11:51What battle was this, Jim?
00:11:53Oh, for goodness sake, Helen. Let him catch his breath.
00:11:56He'll be around for a while, you know.
00:11:58Yes.
00:12:00He'll be around for a long time.
00:12:10And it hasn't been so very long, darling.
00:12:13What can you expect in a few months?
00:12:15It seems like years.
00:12:17You can count the number of customers I've had on one hand.
00:12:20Look.
00:12:23Not enough business to pay the first month's rent.
00:12:28Better have a pretty good excuse for the landlord next month.
00:12:31I can help, Jim.
00:12:38I'm afraid the secretary's salary wasn't designed
00:12:40to put a man on the road to his first million.
00:12:43Do you have to have a million dollars?
00:12:45You know what I want for you.
00:12:47Do you really, honey?
00:12:49I want to give you everything.
00:12:52But I didn't ask for everything.
00:12:55No, and you didn't ask for a guy that couldn't
00:12:57afford to buy his way into a penny arcade either.
00:13:03Jim.
00:13:05We have each other. Isn't that important?
00:13:07Sure, it's important.
00:13:09But we can't get married.
00:13:11Why not?
00:13:13Where would we set up housekeeping?
00:13:15At your folks' home or mine?
00:13:17It would only be for a little while, darling.
00:13:20Why, with your know-how, it's just a question of time.
00:13:24It won't work.
00:13:26I've got to have my own house, furniture,
00:13:29new car, respectability.
00:13:32Respectability?
00:13:34What about your war record?
00:13:36What you did for your country?
00:13:43Jim, you do what you think is best.
00:13:47I'll see you later for dinner.
00:13:49Let's go to that little pizza place.
00:13:51Sure.
00:13:53It's about time I gave your mother a rest.
00:13:58Guy at the con drugstore said you used some business.
00:14:01What kind of business?
00:14:02It's radio.
00:14:03You tell that guy at the drugstore this isn't
00:14:05a radio repair shop.
00:14:06He already knows that, Buster, but he figures
00:14:08an engineer might do a better job.
00:14:10Oh, he could do a better job.
00:14:12Don't be so stuffy, Jim.
00:14:13You could do it as a favor for the gentleman.
00:14:17All right, let's have a look at it.
00:14:30Boss would like it back as soon as possible.
00:14:32The boss?
00:14:34Mr. Rumsden.
00:14:35Charles Rumsden.
00:14:37Am I supposed to know who he is?
00:14:39You ain't been in L.A. long, buddy, if you don't.
00:14:42Lived here all my life, mister.
00:14:44Here's your trouble.
00:14:46With labor and parts, it'll cost you $20.
00:14:48Hey, that's pretty steep, ain't it?
00:14:50You said you wanted it fixed right.
00:14:52It'll take me several hours.
00:14:54Deliver it?
00:14:55If I have to.
00:14:57Here, here's the address.
00:14:59I'll get right to it.
00:15:08You're going to be busy, Jim, so I may as well
00:15:10get back to the office.
00:15:12Not too busy.
00:15:13It's already fixed.
00:15:15But you told him it would take several hours.
00:15:18All that was wrong was a loose battery connection.
00:15:22You charged him $20.
00:15:24The way the chauffeur talked, his boss can afford a good price.
00:15:27And I can afford to take you to dinner for a change.
00:15:31It isn't right, Jim.
00:15:33Oh, honey.
00:15:35Tonight we'll go to a real restaurant.
00:15:37Steak instead of pizza.
00:15:39But Jim, you should...
00:15:42Never mind.
00:15:48I'll meet you here at 6.
00:15:50Okay.
00:15:52Okay.
00:16:18Look, I rushed this job and I've been standing
00:16:20and just pushing this stupid bell.
00:16:22Okay, so the bell isn't working.
00:16:23So my time's important, too.
00:16:25Relax.
00:16:26Come on in.
00:16:27I'll get your dough for you.
00:16:35I don't pay you to bring me problems, Herbie.
00:16:38I'm just telling you what Marie tells me, Chief.
00:16:41She plays it like she's got her own dice.
00:16:43Save it.
00:16:44What is it, Romano?
00:16:45A repair on the radio, Mr. Ronstan.
00:16:47$20.
00:16:48Pay him, Tony.
00:16:49Oh, Romano.
00:16:50Well, that electrician is still here.
00:16:52Have him find out why the front doorbell won't work.
00:16:54Well, he's not exactly an electrician, boss,
00:16:56but I'll see what I can do about it.
00:17:06Look, Chief, I offered Marie Blanche a deal.
00:17:09I didn't send you to make a deal, Herbie.
00:17:11I sent you with orders.
00:17:14That's what I'm trying to tell you.
00:17:15I don't know what her connections are,
00:17:16but she don't take orders.
00:17:19If she figures on working this town,
00:17:21she'll take orders the same as everyone else does.
00:17:29I don't know.
00:17:30Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.
00:17:32Must be a short somewhere.
00:17:34I'd like to look at the wires under the house.
00:17:36Right over here.
00:17:45I'll get my jacket.
00:17:49Let's go.
00:18:11Let's not kid ourselves, Chief.
00:18:13Marie's a smart dame.
00:18:15It's a cinch the cops can't finger her.
00:18:17They picked up, act like they never heard of her.
00:18:19She says she don't need us.
00:18:21She's got a good deal.
00:18:23You don't have to tell me.
00:18:25I know she's got a good deal.
00:18:27That's why I'm taking it over.
00:18:29That's not the way she figures it.
00:18:31That's the way I figure it.
00:18:33Where's Nick?
00:18:34I gave him the word.
00:18:35He should be here any minute.
00:18:36Yeah, he went to see a guy that opened a book in Burbank.
00:18:39The dope thinks he can run it by himself.
00:18:41Same as Marie.
00:18:47♪
00:19:14Is Rumsden around, Romano?
00:19:16He's all around and back on the patio.
00:19:18All right.
00:19:44Well, what's so important about a doorbell that doesn't work?
00:19:47Maybe I'd better explain it in private, Mr. Rumsden.
00:19:50Speak up.
00:19:51These are my friends.
00:19:53Know what a bug is, mister?
00:19:55A what?
00:19:57A bug.
00:19:58A hidden microphone.
00:20:00There's one in your house.
00:20:02Well.
00:20:04Who'd want to listen in on anything I had to say?
00:20:07Did you pull it out?
00:20:09Gotta find it first.
00:20:11Anyway, I thought you might like to know who put it in.
00:20:14Oh, you could do that, huh?
00:20:16Easy.
00:20:17A lot easier than some of the projects we worked on during the war.
00:20:20We?
00:20:21Who's we?
00:20:23I was a captain in communications.
00:20:25That is, until I was graduated to fixing doorbells.
00:20:28Uh, what would you need?
00:20:31I've got all the parts at the office.
00:20:33Uh-huh.
00:20:35Go with him, Herbie.
00:20:38There you are, Captain.
00:20:40Oh, I can't change a hundred, Mr. Rumsden.
00:20:43Anybody ask you for change?
00:20:45No.
00:20:51Sounds like a smart kid.
00:20:57You stupid idiot.
00:20:59Letting a bug the house like that.
00:21:05You better check your house, Nick.
00:21:07All our places.
00:21:08You know, that kid could come in handy.
00:21:11He knows what he's talking about.
00:21:13You know, I asked you over here today.
00:21:15Yeah?
00:21:16What do you want to do about it?
00:21:18Put her out of business.
00:21:20The keeps?
00:21:22Sit down, we'll talk about it.
00:21:43Come in.
00:22:13Come in.
00:22:43That's all I can tell you, Alice.
00:22:44I just can't make dinner.
00:22:46Is anything wrong?
00:22:48Of course not.
00:22:50Darling, you're acting so strangely.
00:22:52Alice, I'm busy.
00:22:53I've got a job to do, a good one.
00:22:57All right, Jim.
00:23:02Good night, honey.
00:23:03Good night, Alice.
00:23:13Good night.
00:23:32I hope he's right.
00:23:33That'll drown out anything we might say.
00:23:35I hope he's right.
00:23:36That's the only bug they planted.
00:23:39You gotta see this to really believe it, Mr. Rumson.
00:23:43Hold the dessert, Romano.
00:23:46All right, Herbie.
00:23:47Let's go see.
00:24:06They use something like a mind detector to trace the wire.
00:24:09It goes through the room over the garage next door.
00:24:12Wow.
00:24:14It's nice to know who your good neighbors are.
00:24:26The radio did the trick.
00:24:28They're beefing, they can't hear a word.
00:24:30Who's they?
00:24:32The police.
00:24:42You sure that's the only bug in my house?
00:24:45I've covered every inch of it.
00:24:47I'd like to talk to you.
00:24:49Come on in and have a drink.
00:24:51I don't like to drink on an empty stomach.
00:24:54Come on.
00:25:03If you'll let me pull that bug out of the wood box,
00:25:06you can turn the radio off.
00:25:08If you'll let me pull that bug out of the wood box,
00:25:10you can turn the radio off.
00:25:12Tell me something, boss.
00:25:14Could you develop equipment to listen in on a telephone?
00:25:18That is, record a conversation without the owner knowing anything about it?
00:25:22Wiretapping is illegal, Mr. Rumson.
00:25:25I know the law, I practice it.
00:25:27Just answer the question.
00:25:29I could put the equipment together.
00:25:34I see.
00:25:38Well, now, what I have in mind is a very worthy cause.
00:25:43We're gonna help the police department.
00:25:45Even the police aren't allowed to tap private wires.
00:25:48That's why we're gonna do it for them.
00:25:53Here's 500.
00:25:57There'll be another five if you do a good job.
00:26:02Well, I guess if it's for the police,
00:26:06it'll be all right.
00:26:09How soon could you get your equipment together?
00:26:12Well, I have to get the parts in a couple of days.
00:26:17Go with him, Herbie.
00:26:21Let's go, chum.
00:26:30What's the game, Charlie?
00:26:32I think Marie is practically out of business.
00:27:02Oh, Jim, I've been trying to find you for two days.
00:27:05I told you over the phone I'd be busy, Alice.
00:27:07Busy with what?
00:27:08Now, will you stop worrying?
00:27:10I always worry about you, honey.
00:27:12I'm working on something.
00:27:13Can't you tell me about it?
00:27:15Only that it'll bring us enough money to get married.
00:27:17I'll call you later, Alice.
00:27:18When?
00:27:19You heard him, he'll call you.
00:27:20Come on.
00:27:21Wait a minute.
00:27:22Please, Jim, it's all right.
00:27:24Call me when you can.
00:27:26Call me when you can.
00:27:37Don't ever try that again, Herbie.
00:27:39Rumson's working.
00:27:40Wait a minute.
00:27:41Look, chum, Rumson is paying for that minute
00:27:43and all the rest of your time.
00:27:45Now get your equipment together.
00:27:46We're late.
00:27:56Come on.
00:28:12Yes?
00:28:14It'll be tonight, Chief.
00:28:15We're on our way to Marie's apartment house now.
00:28:18Right.
00:28:26Come on.
00:28:36Now, Nick, as your lawyer, give it to me straight.
00:28:39You connected in any way with Marie Blanche?
00:28:42You know I don't fool around with that kind of stuff.
00:28:45It's a good thing you don't.
00:28:47Why, did Marie get herself in a beef with the cops?
00:28:49Why, no, they don't even know she's operating
00:28:51at a 211 Roscoe Place.
00:28:53What's all the excitement?
00:28:55I got a tip someone's tapping her telephone.
00:28:58Oh, that someone could buy a mess of trouble
00:29:00if the cops knew.
00:29:01Oh, they'd love him if he came up with enough evidence
00:29:03to help him indict Marie.
00:29:25You getting anything?
00:29:27You better be getting plenty, Buster.
00:29:30Tapping private wires is a serious offense.
00:29:33I'll disconnect.
00:29:37Here, I'll take that.
00:29:42Can you record this?
00:29:47Who gave you that?
00:29:49Who gave you that?
00:29:51I don't know.
00:29:53Who gave you this number?
00:29:55Why, uh, Mr. Fielding, our sales manager.
00:29:58Oh, yes.
00:30:00Well, we have some very nice books.
00:30:03The heroine in one is especially attractive.
00:30:06A brunette, about 5'3".
00:30:09Well, that sounds like very interesting reading.
00:30:12How about 10 o'clock at the corner of Sunset and La Brea?
00:30:15There'll be a picture on the front cover.
00:30:18A girl in a mink coat.
00:30:20That'll be fine.
00:30:22Goodbye.
00:30:40That's the number she's calling.
00:30:43Okay, David. Corner of Sunset and La Brea, 10 o'clock.
00:30:45A girl and a traveling salesman.
00:30:47I'll take care of Marie.
00:30:49What's your name?
00:30:51Voss. Jim Voss.
00:30:53Good work, Voss.

00:31:51© BF-WATCH TV 2021
00:32:21How do you like it?
00:32:23Oh, it's beautiful, Jim.
00:32:25Well, the down payment left us a little short on furniture,
00:32:28but, uh, I hope I didn't do wrong
00:32:31starting us off with an empty barn like this.
00:32:33Empty?
00:32:35Why, darling, this house is so full of love
00:32:37that I don't know where we'd fit the furniture if we had it.
00:32:40Oh, we'll fit it in all right.
00:32:42This living room will be ankle-deep in carpet, wall to wall.
00:32:45And, uh, let's see.
00:32:47That's where your sofa will be.
00:32:49A seven-foot one.
00:32:52And there's your favorite chair next to the fire.
00:32:56And right opposite is yours
00:32:58where I can sit and look at you all night.
00:33:00Think of the money we'll save
00:33:02just sitting and looking at each other.
00:33:04Oh, honey, we're going places, too.
00:33:06And to nothing but the best.
00:33:09I can just see the door I'm in now.
00:33:12Mr. Voss's car.
00:33:14And there will be our little jalopy.
00:33:16Chauffeur-driven, of course.
00:33:18It'll be a Cadillac.
00:33:21Well, of course, Jim.
00:33:23What I mean is, honey, I just want to grab the world for you
00:33:26and hand it to you on a silver platter.
00:33:30You're my whole world, darling.
00:33:33You're all I really want.
00:33:35Okay, Mrs. Voss.
00:33:38Jim.
00:33:44Why didn't you tell me about the work you were doing on the...
00:33:47Marie Blanche case?
00:33:51Well, I... I couldn't tell anyone.
00:33:54You can tell me anything.
00:33:56I love you.
00:33:58It was a secret, Alice.
00:34:00I was working with the police.
00:34:02I know.
00:34:04But the papers made it sound so sordid.
00:34:06It got us married, didn't it?
00:34:09Can't we stay married on something nicer?
00:34:12Oh, darling, there's lots of work.
00:34:14Clean work with your kind of ability.
00:34:16All right.
00:34:18From here on in, nothing but honest, normal, routine jobs.
00:34:21Promise?
00:34:22I promise.
00:34:26Oh, no.
00:34:28Did it have to be connected tonight?
00:34:30I'll get rid of whoever it is.
00:34:37Hello?
00:34:39Oh, yes, Mr. Rumsden.
00:34:41Jim, I have a wedding gift for you.
00:34:44A very important assignment with a nice, fat fee.
00:34:47Oh, I certainly can use it, sir.
00:34:50What kind of a job?
00:34:54A wiretapping job?
00:34:56There's a certain politician down at City Hall
00:34:59that's giving a client of mine some trouble.
00:35:01Now, a good job of wiretapping,
00:35:03such as you did on Marie Blanche,
00:35:05would put this politician in a rather awkward spot.
00:35:10You want to expose him, huh?
00:35:12No, not exactly, not if he's smart.
00:35:15Let's say that the kind of recorded evidence that we want
00:35:18would put my client in a very good bargaining position.
00:35:22Oh, no, wait a minute, Mr. Rumsden.
00:35:25This is not the kind of a job I...
00:35:29What was that?
00:35:30I said $2,000.
00:35:35I thought you'd be interested, Jim.
00:35:37I'll see you in my office tomorrow afternoon.
00:35:49Who was that on the phone?
00:35:50A vanload of furniture, honey.
00:35:52Come on.
00:36:10How do you like it, honey?
00:36:14It's not ours.
00:36:15It's yours.
00:36:16For putting up with me for the last three months.
00:36:18Oh, Jim, you're crazy.
00:36:20We can't afford it.
00:36:21It's a gift from Nick Castro for a favor I did for him.
00:36:25What kind of a favor could you have done for a gangster, Jim?
00:36:34Honey, I can't afford to ask my clients for references.
00:36:38But you said you were working with the police.
00:36:41I have been.
00:36:42How can you work with both police and crooks?
00:36:45A pat on the back won't pay our bills.
00:36:51Come on.
00:36:57Who do you think paid for this furniture?
00:36:59The police department?
00:37:04This house was more of a home when it was filled with you.
00:37:08I hardly see you anymore.
00:37:09But I have to be available when I'm needed.
00:37:11To hoodlums?
00:37:14You wouldn't if you'd kept your promise to me.
00:37:16My promise?
00:37:18Not to get mixed up with anything dirty after that Marie Blanche case.
00:37:23But there's nothing dirty about Charles Rumsden.
00:37:25He's one of the biggest attorneys in Los Angeles.
00:37:27He's responsible for every piece of furniture in this house.
00:37:30But I don't want to live with furniture.
00:37:34Wait, Alice.
00:37:37You're right.
00:37:39I have neglected you.
00:37:40I just can't go on this way.
00:37:42Everywhere I go, I have to give reasons why you're not with me.
00:37:45I'm sorry.
00:37:46I've even reached the point where I make excuses for you in advance.
00:37:52We'll do anything you say.
00:37:53Tonight is yours.
00:37:57I was planning on going to the church tonight.
00:38:00Our class is having a social.
00:38:03But I've already told him you won't be with me.
00:38:07Then we'll surprise him.
00:38:16Have a good day.
00:38:46I hear
00:38:49I know that I can never hide from God
00:38:57I cannot hide from Thee, dear Lord
00:39:06To escape Thee so often I've tried
00:39:12No rest shall I know while here below
00:39:22Till in Christ my soul shall hide
00:39:32How often in the past I've gone my wicked way
00:39:39I knew I'd come at last to face another day
00:39:47When for my wasted years I'd pay in grief and tears
00:39:57I knew that I could never hide from God
00:40:05I cannot hide from Thee, dear Lord
00:40:15To escape Thee so often I've tried
00:40:23No rest shall I know while here below
00:40:31Till in Christ my soul shall hide
00:40:54Come on, honey, we're leaving.
00:40:56What? We came for the meeting.
00:40:58Let's get out of here.
00:41:01Jim, you're hurting me.
00:41:03I'm sorry. I'll tell you later.
00:41:07Wasn't that him, boss?
00:41:09Why, yes.
00:41:11Do you know him?
00:41:13Yes, very well.
00:41:15What on earth came over them?
00:41:28Why are we stopping here?
00:41:29There's something I want to tell you.
00:41:31Can't you tell me at home?
00:41:34You may not want to go home when I'm finished.
00:41:39But before I tell you, Alice,
00:41:41there's something I want you to believe.
00:41:44I love you.
00:41:46And I never wanted you hurt, particularly by me.
00:41:50Jim, what is it?
00:41:52Tell me.
00:41:53Jim, what is it?
00:41:55Tell me.
00:41:57All the time you thought I...
00:41:59I was winning medals.
00:42:02I was serving a prison sentence
00:42:04for stealing government property.
00:42:07Stealing?
00:42:10I didn't figure it as stealing at the time,
00:42:12but the army court-martial did.
00:42:17For taking a few measly gadgets
00:42:19to add to the fat salary
00:42:21they were already paying me.
00:42:23Are you trying to justify stealing?
00:42:26I'm just trying to explain why, Alice.
00:42:34You waited long enough to tell me this.
00:42:39What made you decide to tell me tonight?
00:42:43The Speaker, Miss Wilson, wanted me to meet tonight.
00:42:46It was the chaplain at the prison.
00:42:47And you still wouldn't have told me if...
00:42:49I told you, Alice.
00:42:51I didn't want to hurt you.
00:42:53All those letters.
00:42:55Those important missions.
00:42:58All part of the same lie.
00:43:01I was afraid of losing you.
00:43:04You don't lose people who love you
00:43:06when you tell the truth.
00:43:10I wanted to tell you before I came home, Alice.
00:43:13I wanted to tell you before I came home, Alice.
00:43:15But I couldn't.
00:43:20Now I realize the mistake I made.
00:43:24All right.
00:43:27The rest is up to you.
00:43:30Can you forgive me?
00:43:33Sure.
00:43:35Sure, I can forgive you, Jim.
00:43:38I've made excuses for you before.
00:43:40I can go on making excuses
00:43:42for anything you do.
00:43:43But I can't make the same excuses
00:43:45for our child.
00:43:48Our child?
00:43:53I'm sorry I had to tell you
00:43:55under these conditions.
00:43:57Give me another chance, Alice.
00:43:59Please give me another chance.
00:44:01I'll do anything.
00:44:06You'll even give up
00:44:08all connections with Nick Castro?
00:44:10I promise.
00:44:11I promise.
00:44:15I don't care what you promised.
00:44:17Besides those joints I hired you
00:44:19to service, I'm opening up some new books.
00:44:21I need some phone extensions.
00:44:23I told you, Nick, I can't afford
00:44:25to get tied in with gambling.
00:44:27What do you mean you can't afford?
00:44:29Where'd you get the car, the house,
00:44:31the clothes, the furniture?
00:44:33Don't tell me them things ain't important.
00:44:35Sure they are, Nick.
00:44:37You've got a better offer,
00:44:39you better forget it.
00:44:40I don't want to see Alice unhappy.
00:44:42Now look, is she gonna be any happy
00:44:44if you don't bring home the bacon
00:44:46and take care of that kid?
00:44:48You tell me where you can make
00:44:50any more dough than what you're making with me.
00:44:52All right, Nick.
00:44:54Just one thing, please don't call the house.
00:44:56I don't want Alice to find out.
00:44:58Okay.
00:45:00Only you just be where I can find you
00:45:02in a hurry.
00:45:04Hey, what's going on at my joint?
00:45:1034-T, request ambulance
00:45:12regarding shooting
00:45:14at 161 North Crescent Heights Drive.
00:45:16Over.
00:45:19Hey, what gives?
00:45:21Well, it's a cinch
00:45:23we ain't gonna find out
00:45:25from little Joe Bagot.
00:45:27There's rumors you and him
00:45:29had a falling out, Nick.
00:45:31I don't know what you're talking about.
00:45:33He makes book, I make clothes.
00:45:35These guys play for keeps.
00:45:37Looks like the only way out
00:45:39is feet first.
00:45:51Hello, Mr. Bagot.
00:45:53I'm here to see you.
00:45:55Oh, hello, Mr. Bagot.
00:45:57Oh, hello, Mr. Bagot.
00:45:59Oh, hello, Mr. Bagot.
00:46:01Oh, hello, Mr. Bagot.
00:46:03Oh, hello, Mr. Bagot.
00:46:05Oh, hello, this is the city hospital.
00:46:07I'd like to speak to Mr. Boss, please.
00:46:11Well, do you know where I can find him?
00:46:15I tried both those numbers.
00:46:17Well, thank you very much.
00:46:31He must be on his way, Mrs. Boss.
00:46:33I hope so.
00:46:34Don't worry. New fathers are too excited to miss events like this.
00:46:51You know, little Joe had a lot of friends crying at his funeral.
00:46:54Can I count on this bail-a-wire?
00:46:56If anyone enters your property, you'll know it.
00:47:00There's someone at the front door.
00:47:02I'll see who it is.
00:47:08It's me, Charlie Rumsden.
00:47:13Evening, Al.
00:47:14They're in the den, Mr. Rumsden.
00:47:16Oh.
00:47:20Well, you're just in time, Charlie.
00:47:22Oh? Time for what?
00:47:23To help christen my radar screen.
00:47:25You know, this guy's got me guarded closer than Fort Knox.
00:47:28Well, so that's it. How does it work?
00:47:30You'll see in a minute. I sent some of the boys out to test it.
00:47:32You set off that alarm, Mr. Rumsden, when you came through the front gates.
00:47:37Now, that's Herbie coming over the west wall.
00:47:40What do you know about that?
00:47:42Oh, it's really very simple.
00:47:44Oh, sure. It's simple, all right.
00:47:46If you happen to be a genius.
00:47:49Now, that's Tony coming over the east wall.
00:47:51You see, Mr. Rumsden, wherever the circuit is broken,
00:47:54these lights register the exact position of the intruder.
00:47:57Let's have a drink on that, huh?
00:47:59All right, good idea.
00:48:09I'll check on her husband once more.
00:48:14Charlie?
00:48:17Jim?
00:48:18That radar screen really works, huh, Nick?
00:48:20Like a charm, Herbie.
00:48:21Well, here's to Jim's brainchild.
00:48:27The hospital.
00:48:30I forgot Alice.
00:48:38You been monkeying with that thing?
00:48:40No, I didn't touch nothing.
00:48:42It's the east wall. You two guys case the garden.
00:48:44Al, come with me.
00:48:57Come on.
00:49:13Don't move.
00:49:16Oh, it's you, Jim.
00:49:17Did you see anything?
00:49:18Well, a lot of shadows.
00:49:28Nick!
00:49:47Nick!
00:49:48Nick!
00:49:57Nick!
00:50:05Your visitor's calling card.
00:50:07A time bomb, huh?
00:50:08I'll try and kill it.
00:50:10You know how?
00:50:11I don't know. I'll have to figure it out.
00:50:13You might figure wrong.
00:50:15Got any idea what time it's set for?
00:50:17Who knows?
00:50:18Five minutes, five seconds.
00:50:20Five seconds?
00:50:27Five seconds.
00:50:57Five seconds.
00:51:15All right.
00:51:16I guess you saved my life, kid.
00:51:28Five minutes ago.
00:51:32Well, I was detained on business.
00:51:38Thanks, nurse.
00:51:42My daughter was born five minutes ago.
00:51:44Okay, so it wasn't a boy.
00:51:46I wasn't there.
00:51:48Look, the kid and lemon know the difference.
00:51:50Tell you what I'll do with you.
00:51:51I'll give you a present for her.
00:51:54Tell you what I'll do with you.
00:51:55I'll give you a present for her.
00:51:56Got any dough saved?
00:51:58A little.
00:51:59Bet every cent you got on Grand Lady and the Fourth at Belmont tomorrow.
00:52:03Only don't bet with any of my books.
00:52:05The race is wired.
00:52:20Well, it ain't the first time you lost the race, Tony.
00:52:22It's the first time I lost a fixed race.
00:52:24Now, how did I know the horse was going to stumble coming out of the gate?
00:52:27Besides, what are you beefing about?
00:52:29You and your five hundred.
00:52:31Jim here lost three grand.
00:52:33Yeah.
00:52:34Three thousand I didn't have.
00:52:36I ain't worried, kid.
00:52:38You'll pay it back.
00:52:39The hospital won't feel that way.
00:52:41I can't pay him a cent.
00:52:43You stick with me and I'll have you in velvet.
00:52:45There'll be another cinch race.
00:52:46Not for me, there won't.
00:52:48The only cinch I know is tomorrow's results, Todd.
00:52:52Why tomorrow?
00:52:53A couple of minutes ahead of the race wire is all you need.
00:52:56Hey, boss.
00:52:58You're a whiz, kid.
00:52:59Can't you figure a way of holding back the wire that long?
00:53:02You know, you could build your own private hospital for your next kid.
00:53:05Now, that's something you can work on in your spare time.
00:53:21Stop worrying, will you?
00:53:41Here.
00:53:44Now, that's enough dough there to pay your hospital bill.
00:53:47My wife won't know anything about it.
00:53:53All right, you guys.
00:53:54Break it up.
00:54:18Hey, Jim.
00:54:20Come on, we got business.
00:54:50Come on.
00:55:10Morning.
00:55:33It's just the one bag.
00:55:34I'll get my baby and be right with you.
00:55:36I'll take the paper with you, ma'am.
00:55:54Driver.
00:56:00I won't need you.
00:56:03My time.
00:56:07Thank you, ma'am.
00:56:08Anything you say.
00:56:10Goodbye.
00:56:11Thanks.
00:56:42Goodbye.
00:56:43Goodbye.
00:57:12Hello, Mother.
00:57:15I'm not coming.
00:57:25I can't now, Mother.
00:57:27I can't leave him when he's in such trouble.
00:57:38I know all that, but it doesn't matter.
00:57:42I still love him and he needs me.
00:57:47I can't help it, I do.
00:57:52I have to stay, Mother.
00:57:55I'll call you later.
00:58:06I'm sorry, darling.
00:58:08I don't mean to hurt you.
00:58:09It's just that I...
00:58:11Well, from here on in, I promise I'll never...
00:58:13Jim, please.
00:58:15No more promises.
00:58:17Don't make any more promises.
00:58:19But last night I got an idea, a big idea.
00:58:22An idea as big as your heart.
00:58:25And how does Nick Castro fit into it?
00:58:27He doesn't.
00:58:29If he ever calls, I'm not in.
00:58:31Do you really mean it, Jim?
00:58:33Yes.
00:58:34But you're going to have to be patient with me.
00:58:36I've got to work out this idea.
00:58:37It may take me weeks, maybe months.
00:58:40But if it works...
00:58:43We'll be on Easy Street forever.

01:00:00Jim.
01:00:03Don't you want to know what the doctor said?
01:00:06What?
01:00:08The doctor.
01:00:14I said, don't you want to know what the doctor said?
01:00:18The doctor?
01:00:19What is it, Alice?
01:00:21You're going to be a father again.
01:00:26It's got to work.
01:00:28What?
01:00:30The machine, the teletype.
01:00:31I've got to make it work.
01:00:38It's terrific.
01:00:41If it's true.
01:00:42It's true.
01:00:44I can tie into the race wire service and delay the results long enough for you to bet the winner for us.
01:00:52My end will work.
01:00:53What about yours?
01:00:55Why didn't you go to Nick?
01:00:57You know why.
01:00:59I haven't seen him for three months.
01:01:00I don't want any part of him.
01:01:01Except his money, huh?
01:01:03Not even his money.
01:01:05There are plenty of other books we can work this on.
01:01:07That's small time stuff.
01:01:08With a deal like this, we could make millions.
01:01:10Let's take what we can without taking too many chances, huh?
01:01:14Why did you pick me for this job, Voss?
01:01:16Because I think you're as anxious to break clear of Nick as I am.
01:01:19And because I think you're tired of being a punching bag for him every time something goes sour.
01:01:24Okay, Pally.
01:01:26You get yourself a deal.
01:01:41Nobody can say you travel light.
01:01:43Get lost.
01:01:44Thanks.
01:01:47Are you sure that's the wire we got to cut into?
01:01:49One of them's the right pair already.
01:01:51How long will it take him?
01:01:53I'll take care of it tonight.
01:01:55I'll do as you say.
01:01:57You always do.
01:02:09I'm going to go off and get some food.
01:02:11We can't let the house get under fire.
01:02:13How long will it take you?
01:02:15I'll take care of it tonight. It'll be ready by post time.
01:02:17Good.
01:02:18Talley, tomorrow we hit them with boat barrels.
01:03:13I'll take care of it.
01:03:43I'll take care of it.
01:04:13Hey, Talley, I got time for the fourth race?
01:04:26Yeah, if you hurry. The race is late getting started.
01:04:30They should be at the post now.
01:04:31200 to win, number four.
01:04:33What? 200 on that goat?
01:04:36Okay.
01:04:40Thanks for the donation, pal.
01:04:45Sit down.
01:04:46Oh, I only got 20 bucks.
01:05:40Too bad the tracks aren't open Sundays, Jim.
01:05:56Tony, we've earned ourselves a vacation.
01:05:59Oh, what do you call this? Best vacation I ever had.
01:06:02Yeah, but we've been hitting them pretty hard for the last two months.
01:06:05And without a let up.
01:06:07We've been a little low for a while.
01:06:09Besides, I promised Alice a vacation.
01:06:11Oh, wait a minute, Jim.
01:06:12There's one guy I got a little account to square with.
01:06:15One more, huh?
01:06:17All right, Tony. One more.
01:06:19Good.
01:06:23You sure got in under the wire on that race, buddy.
01:06:25That's the way it goes, Talley.
01:06:27What made you bet that nag? 20 to one?
01:06:29I got a system.
01:06:33He's got a system.
01:06:47Jim!
01:07:11You pressed your luck when you tried it on me, boss.
01:07:20Okay.
01:07:22That's enough for a while.
01:07:25I didn't know it was your book, Nick.
01:07:30I told Tony to lay off.
01:07:33He's included me in that warning, boss.
01:07:36It was my 20,000 the cops found in Lee's pocket.
01:07:40Why, you cheap two-bit bill fixer.
01:07:44After taking out of that burlap you were wearing, putting you in a $200 suit.
01:07:48Staked you to everything you own.
01:07:50Kept you from being dumped in the river when you couldn't make good that three grand bet.
01:07:54Paid your hospital bill.
01:07:56Okay, okay. I'll pay it all back to you.
01:07:59You can make book on that.
01:08:01Whatever made you think you could walk out on us.
01:08:05Or maybe you don't know why you're still alive.
01:08:08It ain't that we love you, boss.
01:08:10No more than we love Tony.
01:08:12It just so happens we need you.
01:08:14And you better make sure we keep needing you.
01:08:18What do you want?
01:08:19That gadget of yours.
01:08:21Who else knows about it?
01:08:24No one.
01:08:26Not even my wife.
01:08:27We'll keep it that way, boss.
01:08:30You're gonna make a little trip.
01:08:32Trip?
01:08:34What do you want?
01:08:36I'll do anything.
01:08:38I'll work with you.
01:08:40You'll work for me, not with me.
01:08:43And maybe if you follow orders you might come back from St. Louis in one piece.
01:08:48St. Louis?
01:08:50You and Tony scratched up a little chicken feed.
01:08:53We're gonna set up shop in St. Louis and take every bookie west of there.
01:08:58But you'll be bucking the whole syndicate.
01:09:00One way through, I'll be the syndicate.
01:09:04What if they find out?
01:09:06You better pray that they don't.
01:09:10When do we leave?
01:09:12Tomorrow night.
01:09:13I can't leave tomorrow night.
01:09:15I said tomorrow night.
01:09:17Be here at ten o'clock.
01:09:19And that means ten o'clock sharp.
01:09:30What?
01:09:39Jim, what happened to you?
01:09:41I was crossing the street to my car and some crazy driver bumped me.
01:09:45I'm lucky I wasn't run over.
01:09:47Oh, honey.
01:09:49I'll call a doctor.
01:09:50No, wait. I'm okay.
01:09:52They checked me at the emergency hospital.
01:09:54It's just a lot of scratches.
01:09:56Then I'll call mother and tell her not to pick up Madeline tonight.
01:09:59No, wait.
01:10:00But, Jim, the beach isn't going to be any vacation for you until you feel better.
01:10:06Look, honey, I...
01:10:09Our vacation will have to wait.
01:10:11Some business has come up.
01:10:18That's all right, darling.
01:10:21I understand.
01:10:22So maybe it would be better if your mother did pick up Madeline tonight and...
01:10:27I could run you over tomorrow night.
01:10:30Why do we have to go to mother's?
01:10:33I have to leave town.
01:10:36And I don't want you here alone.
01:10:38Leave town?
01:10:40Now, before the baby comes?
01:10:47I know what you're thinking, honey.
01:10:49Seems I'm never around when you need me the most.
01:10:52This time I can't help it.
01:10:54You couldn't help it when Madeline was born.
01:10:56I got a ten o'clock appointment.
01:10:57I just can't put it off.
01:11:01I still don't know why I can't stay here in our own house.
01:11:04Honey, I told you I didn't want you alone.
01:11:06Everything's arranged.
01:11:07Your mother will take better care of you and Madeline than I can.
01:11:10But it's you I want with me.
01:11:12Don't make it more difficult.
01:11:15I'd give anything if I didn't have to go.
01:11:18Would you?
01:11:21Please get in the car.
01:11:26Let's go.
01:11:34Jim, look.
01:11:39Let's go hear him.
01:11:40What?
01:11:42Please, Jim.
01:11:43You've got a couple of hours.
01:11:45But I want to see you settle before I go.
01:11:47There might not be much time.
01:11:49There may never be a better time.
01:11:52What do you mean by that?
01:11:54I can't explain it.
01:11:55I just have a feeling it's something I need.
01:11:57Something that will help me tonight when you're gone.
01:12:03All right.
01:12:04We can't stay long.
01:12:07Jesus knew that they were following him because they'd seen him do great miracles.
01:12:11But that's not enough.
01:12:13Jesus demands more than that.
01:12:15Jesus demands repentance of sin.
01:12:18Jesus demands renouncing your sins and following him.
01:12:22And one of those people that said we'd like to follow you was Nicodemus, a religious leader.
01:12:27But Jesus had said no even to Nicodemus.
01:12:30And Nicodemus came quietly to him one night and said,
01:12:33Master, I'd like to talk over this problem.
01:12:36I'd like to talk over my spiritual life.
01:12:38And Jesus turned to this religious leader and said,
01:12:42Nicodemus, except a man is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of heaven.
01:12:48Have you been born again?
01:12:50And Nicodemus was taken aback.
01:12:52Born again?
01:12:53He'd never even heard of being born again.
01:12:55Jesus said the only way to heaven is by the new birth.
01:12:59Well, what do you mean by the new birth, you say?
01:13:01Well, the Bible teaches, first of all, that you're a sinner.
01:13:04The Bible teaches that you've sinned against God.
01:13:07You've broken the laws of God.
01:13:09Every person in this tent tonight has broken the laws of Almighty God.
01:13:14What are the laws?
01:13:15The Ten Commandments.
01:13:17The Bible says that any man that breaks the Ten Commandments is a sinner.
01:13:21And all the problems of the world tonight come from the fact that men are sinners.
01:13:26And all of your problems come from the fact that you're sinners.
01:13:30It's getting late, honey. Let's go.
01:13:31Oh, there are many people that think that they can live a life of sin and get away with it.
01:13:34You think that you can beat the game of sin.
01:13:36You think that sin pays off.
01:13:38But sin pays off in nothing except misery, heartache, disillusionment, inner tension.
01:13:46The Bible says, what shall it profit a man if he gained the whole world and loses his own soul?
01:13:51Some of you, the devil has told you, will give you a part of the world.
01:13:55You've gained a little bit of this world's goods.
01:13:57You've gained a little bit of popularity and notoriety, perhaps.
01:14:00But all of that, Jesus said, is nothing compared to losing your own soul.
01:14:06The Bible says the moment you die, that your soul goes out into eternity,
01:14:10banished from the presence of God forever.
01:14:13You're a sinner tonight, and you need to repent of your sin and give your heart to Christ.
01:14:18You say, well, Billy, I know I'm a sinner.
01:14:21I know I've sinned against God.
01:14:23I know that I've failed God.
01:14:25I know that I've done things I shouldn't do.
01:14:28But what can I do about it?
01:14:30I can't stand any more of this.
01:14:31Jesus said, be born again.
01:14:33You say, well, be born again. What do you mean by that?
01:14:35Are you afraid of?
01:14:36It means that you can actually become a part of God's life.
01:14:41You can have God's life in you.
01:14:44You can be forgiven of every sin.
01:14:46You can know that you're going to heaven.
01:14:48You can have peace and joy and rest in your heart
01:14:52by surrendering and giving your life and heart to Jesus Christ.
01:14:56You can be born again.
01:14:58Now, the moment you receive Christ as your Savior,
01:15:00the moment you open your heart and let Christ in,
01:15:03He comes in and makes you a new moral person.
01:15:08He just doesn't clean up the old person.
01:15:10He just doesn't whitewash the old barn.
01:15:12He makes you an entirely new creation.
01:15:16You become literally a brand new person
01:15:20by giving your heart and your life to Jesus Christ.
01:15:23It's an infusion of God's life into you.
01:15:27And then you say, well, Billy, how do I receive this new birth?
01:15:32How do I get it?
01:15:33Where can I find it?
01:15:35Come to Jesus Christ right now.
01:15:37Come to the foot of the cross.
01:15:39It was on the cross that He died for your sins.
01:15:42It was at the cross that God made reconciliation with man.
01:15:46And at the cross, you can find forgiveness of your sin.
01:15:50You can find peace and joy and salvation
01:15:54by coming to the foot of the cross.
01:15:56You say, what will it cost?
01:15:58It'll cost you your sins.
01:16:00You'll have to give up your sins.
01:16:02You have to renounce them.
01:16:04I don't find a verse of Scripture anywhere in the Bible
01:16:07where it says that you can live any kind of life you want to
01:16:10and be a Christian.
01:16:11You have to renounce sins.
01:16:13That's what repentance means.
01:16:14It means to turn from sins,
01:16:16to acknowledge your sins.
01:16:18And then, by faith, you open your heart
01:16:21and let Jesus Christ come in.
01:16:24By faith, you receive Him as your own personal Savior.
01:16:27And the moment you do it,
01:16:29He forgives every sin you've ever committed.
01:16:32You become born again.
01:16:34You become a new person,
01:16:36a new creation.
01:16:37And you can leave this tent tonight
01:16:40knowing that if you died, you would go to heaven.
01:16:42You can leave this tent tonight with all the past forgiven.
01:16:46You can leave this tent tonight walking on air
01:16:49with a smile on your face and joy in your heart
01:16:51and a spring in your step
01:16:53by letting Jesus Christ come into your heart.
01:16:57And I'm going to ask tonight, in this great tent,
01:17:00all of you that will receive Christ,
01:17:02all of you that will renounce your sins,
01:17:05all of you that want to receive the new birth
01:17:07and be born again,
01:17:09I'm going to ask you in a few moments
01:17:11to get up out of your seat.
01:17:13And I'm going to ask you to come quietly and reverently
01:17:16and stand in front of this platform
01:17:18and say, by coming,
01:17:20I give my life and my heart to Jesus Christ.
01:17:24As I've stood here this evening,
01:17:25I felt all evening
01:17:27that there's a man somewhere in this audience.
01:17:30He's heard this message many times before.
01:17:33And the Spirit of God is striving mightily with him at this moment.
01:17:37And if he doesn't come to Christ now,
01:17:39he may never come.
01:17:41We're going to wait a moment.
01:17:43There's still time for you to come.
01:17:45You come and give your life to Christ.
01:17:56It's all right, Jim.
01:18:03It's all right.
01:18:23Now you know everything.
01:18:27Everything I left out about my time in prison.
01:18:31There are so many things I've got to make right.
01:18:34We will, Jim.
01:18:36We?
01:18:40It's still our life, darling.
01:18:44Before I can expect you to share this part of my life with me,
01:18:47I want you to realize what it's going to mean.
01:18:50The price we might have to pay
01:18:52may mean giving up the house,
01:18:55the furniture,
01:18:57the car,
01:19:00everything we possess.
01:19:03We'll start all over.
01:19:05Together.
01:19:07I'm trying to tell you, Alice.
01:19:09It may not be together.
01:19:13There are laws about these things.
01:19:16Laws I've broken.
01:19:19Prison.
01:19:22I'm more afraid of what Rumsden and his mob might do to you.
01:19:27Oh, Jim.
01:19:29I think I'm scared.
01:19:37Did you have to phone them?
01:19:39We could have been miles away by now.
01:19:42I'm through running away, Alice.
01:19:45I've been doing that my whole life.
01:19:48Sure, I could run away from them.
01:19:51But I can't keep on running away from myself.
01:19:55Something happened to me tonight in that tent.
01:19:59For the first time in my life,
01:20:01I'm willing to face the music,
01:20:03to play it straight.
01:20:07It's a wonderful, clean feeling.
01:20:19You should have left Madeline at your mother's house.
01:20:22I'm going to call the police.
01:20:24No, wait.
01:20:26This is something I have to do for myself.
01:20:36Oh, Jim.
01:20:38Alice, listen to me.
01:20:40Go in the bedroom and stay with the baby.
01:20:44Alice, please.
01:20:52Alice.
01:21:18Good thing you called, boss.
01:21:21I was beginning to think maybe you'd run out on us.
01:21:24I'm through running, Mr. Rumsden.
01:21:26All right, then. Come on, let's go.
01:21:29I guess you didn't understand my phone call.
01:21:32I'm not going to St. Louis.
01:21:34I'm not going anywhere with you.
01:21:36We're late, boss.
01:21:38I'm in no mood for jokes.
01:21:40I was never more serious in my life.
01:21:44I don't know how good I'll be at explaining this.
01:21:47It's all so new.
01:21:49But you see, tonight I heard a minister preach a sermon.
01:21:53What is this? What are you giving us?
01:21:56Don't be frightened, darling.
01:21:58Everything's going to be all right.
01:22:03You expect us to swallow that slop?
01:22:06Okay.
01:22:08So the preacher slips you a few dollars to make a headline.
01:22:11Wired's Harper Voss hits Saunders Trail.
01:22:14All right, it gets a few more suckers down on their knees and they stand tomorrow night.
01:22:18You and I have got plane tickets for St. Louis.
01:22:21You have. Not me.
01:22:24Look, I don't know this Graham character, what kind of magic he uses,
01:22:27but I do know it's not healthy for you.
01:22:30I'm trying to make you understand.
01:22:32Do you think we'd let you walk out on us?
01:22:35I've already walked out.
01:22:37And if there's a price to pay, I'm going to have to pay it.
01:22:41You're not talking sense. They'll throw the book at you.
01:22:44You'll spend the rest of your life in jail.
01:22:46If the bookies you've clipped don't get you first,
01:22:49maybe you should remember what happened to Tony.
01:22:51We've given you a choice, Voss.
01:22:54The same trip Tony took,
01:22:56or the one you can still make with me.
01:23:00The Jim Voss you gave that choice to is already dead.
01:23:04He died tonight in the tent.
01:23:07Somebody else was born.
01:23:10A guy no longer interested in the fast buck, the shady deal.
01:23:15He's tied up with a lot of words like repentance, forgiveness.
01:23:23Is that the way you want it, Voss?
01:23:26It's not what I want.
01:23:28It's what I must do.
01:23:31It's not just you, Rumsden,
01:23:34or you, Nick, that I have to straighten myself out with.
01:23:38You're at the bottom of a long list of people I have to square myself with.
01:23:42I want you out right now.
01:23:43No, you leave him alone.
01:23:45You're going to let him get away with this?
01:23:47He's not getting away with anything.
01:23:57Stop it. Come on.
01:24:00I'm going to take care of this now, Charlie.
01:24:03Nick, I said come on.
01:24:13Oh, Jim.
01:24:23There was a man in the tent tonight.
01:24:26He showed me a verse in the Bible.
01:24:30In the book of Proverbs.
01:24:33He said,
01:24:36He showed me a verse in the Bible.
01:24:40In the book of Proverbs.
01:24:48He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
01:25:05He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
01:25:10He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
01:25:15He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
01:25:20He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
01:25:25He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.
