Just before she and her adolescent son Parker are about to head to her small hometown of Wellington for the Christmas break, widowed Olivia Carver, an artist in her own right but one with a severe case of artistic block, learns that there is a high likelihood that she will lose her job as a curator at the New York Gallery of Young Artists in the new year solely due to lack of funding. She fears the uncertainty even more for Parker, who has retreated into a shell ever since his father Tom passed. She moved to New York City to eke out that life as an artist which was only punctuated by her marriage to Tom and having Parker. But she is excited to see that the art scene in Wellington has progressed during her absence with a Christmas mural contest for a prominent exterior wall in town, a contest she doesn't plan on entering due partly to her block. Not submitting an entry doesn't stop her from winning the contest in her mother Betty submitting one of her old paintings as an entry on her behalf. In the process, Olivia keeps running into Will Campbell, the contest runner-up, the two who have had one antagonistic encounter after another up to this point. But in the two learning more about the other, including the honorable reasons that led to them unfortunately butting heads, they begin to be a support for the other, art and otherwise, including Will helping Olivia with the mural as a second pair of creative eyes. As they start to fall for each other, the question becomes if she will take a chance with Will and abandon the path she and Tom had envisioned for themselves and Parker in New York City.

00:00:00And I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I,
00:00:30I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I.
00:00:41Channeling your inner Pollock?
00:00:45Hey Hayden ... No, this is just good old-fashioned rage.
00:00:50I got tired of the blank canvas staring back at me.
00:00:53Do you need me out front? I'm just finishing my lunch break.
00:00:56No, no, we've got you covered!
00:00:59Come up to my office when you're done.
00:01:02Take your time.
00:01:04Progress.
00:01:10Progress.
00:01:12What I'll do is send it over to you. Let me call you right back.
00:01:17Livia, hi. Come in. Just close the door behind you there.
00:01:21Have a seat.
00:01:23Look, I know I have been saying this every week, but you've been absolutely killing it.
00:01:29I'm serious. You are one of the best curators the NYGYA has ever had.
00:01:36You're welcome.
00:01:39Which is why this is so difficult.
00:01:42I found out that our grant hasn't been renewed and unfortunately we're not going to be able to keep all of our staff.
00:01:51I don't have a job.
00:01:53I didn't say that.
00:01:54I live in Williamsburg and it's Christmas and I don't have a job?
00:02:01Livia, you still have a job. You have a job for now.
00:02:05But I don't know what next year is going to look like.
00:02:08And I'm sorry because I know that this isn't the news you wanted to hear before you went back home for your Christmas break.
00:02:13It's just that I wanted to give you plenty of heads up as a friend in case you wanted to start looking.
00:02:25Come on Parker, let's get going.
00:02:28What are we going to do about this?
00:02:31Can I keep it?
00:02:33You really like it?
00:02:35I think it looks like one of those, what's her name, Jackie Pollock?
00:02:41Jackson Pollock. He's a dude.
00:02:45Are you sure Santa won't get confused that we'll be in New Hampshire this year instead of New York?
00:02:51Well, the guy does deliver presents to the entire world.
00:02:55I doubt this is the first time that's come up.
00:02:58Okay, how about I ask Grandpa to text Santa and tell him that we'll be at their place this year?
00:03:05Does that sound good?
00:03:07Can you have Grandma do it? Grandpa really doesn't know how to use his phone.
00:03:11Good call. Watch your head, kiddo.
00:03:21Do you see the lights, buddy?
00:03:34Yeah, it's so nice.
00:03:36Pretty beautiful, huh?
00:03:41There they are, my early Christmas presents.
00:03:46Hi.
00:03:48Grandma! Grandpa!
00:03:49Give me your sport.
00:03:53There's a fresh batch of cookies. Someone needs to taste test for me.
00:03:58I'll do it for you, Grandma.
00:04:00Okay, have at it.
00:04:02Have you guys been waiting out here the whole drive over?
00:04:04A couple hours, give or take. Still getting used to this retirement thing.
00:04:08That sounds like a lovely problem.
00:04:10Go give your mama a hug. You know how she gets.
00:04:13Good to see you. We're so excited you came up for Christmas this year.
00:04:19Us too. Sorry, I know it's overdue.
00:04:23And how's Parker? I saw that he had Tom's plate with him. Is he still having trouble in school?
00:04:29Well, his grades are better, but he's still having a hard time making friends.
00:04:35I think it's going to be really good for him to be back here.
00:04:37I know. I'm excited to take a couple weeks off work and have a nice, relaxing Christmas.
00:04:43Parker, you can have one more cookie, okay, bud? Then it's time for bed.
00:04:48Okay, Mom. Coming.
00:05:07Good night.
00:05:32Morning, everyone. Hey. Hey, morning.
00:05:35Hey, bud.
00:05:37Have you brushed your teeth yet?
00:05:39No.
00:05:42Perfect timing, kiddo. Just made a fresh pot.
00:05:45You sleep okay?
00:05:47Yeah. It's always a little weird sleeping in there. It's like a time capsule to my awkward teenage years.
00:05:54I think the only thing that's different is seeing my painting on the wall.
00:05:58Well, it's only right that the painting hangs in the artist's room.
00:06:02We're hanging on to it, Sel, when you make it big.
00:06:05So hurry up.
00:06:08Oh, so are you painting anything new?
00:06:12Trying. I'm just, um, I guess you could say inspiration's been a little dry the past couple years.
00:06:21Oh, give it time, honey. You'll feel that spark again. I know it.
00:06:25Yeah. Actually, I was thinking maybe I'll use my time while here to give it a go.
00:06:32Oh.
00:06:34Does this town have a proper art store yet?
00:06:35Sure. Aisles 8 through 10 at the Wellington Hardware.
00:06:55Thanks, man. Appreciate it. We need all the entries we can get.
00:06:59Yeah, of course. Happy to help. So, uh, are we still on for tonight?
00:07:02Tribune night is literally the only social event in my calendar. See you there.
00:07:14You in town for the winter walk?
00:07:16Sorry?
00:07:18Saw you eyeing the poster. It's a big deal around here. People come from all over to walk Wellington Drive. Taking the decorations.
00:07:24Oh, yeah. I know. I grew up here, so I used to go every year with my parents.
00:07:29Well, shoot. Look at me blabbing on like you're a tourist.
00:07:31No, it's okay. I haven't been back for the past couple of Christmases.
00:07:35It looks like things have changed, though. I don't remember a mural being part of the celebration.
00:07:40That's a new addition, thanks to yours truly. This will be the first year we try it.
00:07:44I wish there had been something like it when I was a kid. I might have stuck around a little longer rather than hopping on the first train to New York.
00:07:51New York? You're Mac and Betty's daughter.
00:07:55That's right. I forgot how small this town is.
00:07:57Cody, nice to meet you. You're an artist, right? Your mom talked my ear off about you when she saw the poster.
00:08:03Of course she did. Never misses an opportunity. But, um, yeah. I paint. Though not as much lately.
00:08:11Any interest in entering? Application's easy. Just submit a piece.
00:08:15We're choosing an artist tomorrow. You can make it just under the wire.
00:08:17Oh, um, I'm okay. Thanks. I've been trying just to paint more for me lately.
00:08:24No need to explain. Just, I had to ask. But if you change your mind, I'll be here, okay?
00:08:29Sounds good. Thanks, Cody.
00:08:31See you around.
00:08:59You okay over there?
00:09:01Yeah, I'm fine.
00:09:03Here, let me help.
00:09:11Did I just see you outside Town Hall?
00:09:12Oh, yeah, you might have. I was admiring the view. Of the Christmas trees.
00:09:18Trees. Yeah. I'm Will, by the way.
00:09:22I'm Olivia. Nice to meet you. Um.
00:09:25Oh, yeah.
00:09:27Oh, no, you don't. You don't have to help me.
00:09:30That's okay. That's alright. I was coming back to this section anyway. I was hoping to find. Oh, there it is.
00:09:36There it is.
00:09:37Oh. Um. Actually, I was hoping to snag that one. It's the last mistletoe green.
00:09:45I know. I realized I was one short.
00:09:49The good news for you is you've still got some chartreuse and some shamrock to choose from.
00:09:56I don't want shamrock. I'm not painting a leprechaun. I'm pretty particular about my colors.
00:10:03Okay. I think I have a solution.
00:10:05Now, I'm going to let you in on a little secret.
00:10:08Something pretty magical happens when you mix these two together.
00:10:14You're serious?
00:10:16You're not going to give me one of your tubes? You've got like a dozen.
00:10:20I have ten, and ten is exactly how many I need. Believe me, if I could spare one, I would, but.
00:10:26Tell you what. I'm just going to leave these here with you.
00:10:31And I'm going to be on my way.
00:10:33You have a great day.
00:10:35This is crazy.
00:10:37You're crazy!
00:10:39That man is hoarding paint!
00:10:41Merry Christmas.
00:10:43I think you're going to need a clean up in aisle eight.
00:10:46She's an old friend.
00:10:48Unbelievable.
00:10:50I'm still mad about it.
00:10:52Well, maybe he really did need all that paint. Some kind of art emergency.
00:10:56I would really love for you to be on my side instead of some anecdotal man you've never met.
00:11:01Well, if it helps, sweetheart, I don't like him.
00:11:03Thank you, Dad.
00:11:05Maybe you should channel that rage into your art.
00:11:09You know, paint a really mean tree or something.
00:11:12Yeah, I tried, but nothing came to me.
00:11:16Just another blank canvas.
00:11:19Hey, did you guys hear about this Christmas mural contest they're doing?
00:11:23This guy Cody said that he talked to you about it, Mom.
00:11:26Oh, he was so nice.
00:11:28And of course, we texted you about it.
00:11:31No, you didn't.
00:11:33No, trust me, I remember.
00:11:35It was about a week ago.
00:11:37And I told your father to take a picture of the poster and to send it to you.
00:11:41Tell her, honey.
00:11:43That's true, she did, yeah.
00:11:45Here, I'll prove it to you.
00:11:47I got it right here.
00:11:50Here we are.
00:11:51Here we are.
00:11:53Oh.
00:11:55I may have texted our DoorDash delivery guy instead.
00:12:01Would appreciate any response, Greg.
00:12:05You see why I wanted Grandma to text Santa?
00:12:08Regardless, now you know.
00:12:10And I'll tell you now what I would have told you then.
00:12:12You should enter.
00:12:14Mom.
00:12:16Yes, yes, I know you've hit a dry spell,
00:12:17but maybe this is the nudge you need to start painting again.
00:12:21You know, light a fire under you.
00:12:23Only one way to find out, sweetie.
00:12:25Well, even if I did want to enter,
00:12:28I'd have to submit a piece just to be considered.
00:12:30And there's no way that I could paint something decent by tomorrow,
00:12:33even at my best.
00:12:35It's just not in the cards right now.
00:12:47Okay.
00:13:18It has been way too long.
00:13:20New York is not that far away.
00:13:22I know.
00:13:24I'm sorry we haven't been back for Christmas the past couple of years.
00:13:26It's just the Tom and everything.
00:13:28Yeah.
00:13:30Anyway, I really appreciate you staying in touch through it all.
00:13:33Of course.
00:13:35I am always here for you,
00:13:37even though you abandoned me for your cool friends in NYC.
00:13:39So, how are things at Wellington Elementary?
00:13:42Are you over teaching yet?
00:13:44No, not yet still.
00:13:45Love it.
00:13:47Except I have to look into their sweet, youthful faces every day
00:13:50and reflect on my own mortality.
00:13:52Other than that, it's peachy.
00:13:54Mmm.
00:13:56How about you?
00:13:58How's life as a fancy New York art curator?
00:14:00It's a little shaky.
00:14:02We just found out that we lost our funding,
00:14:05and so I'm not sure how long my position is going to last.
00:14:08I'm so sorry, Olivia.
00:14:10You know, we're feeling that at school, too.
00:14:12I have a friend who's a teacher.
00:14:13She thinks our art programs are going to be axed next.
00:14:16But you're a rock star over there.
00:14:19I'm sure your job's fine.
00:14:21And in the meantime,
00:14:23you can focus on your painting.
00:14:25Oh, no.
00:14:27Oh, no? Still no luck on that front?
00:14:29Man, I am batting a thousand here.
00:14:31I'm trying, but I don't know.
00:14:35Nothing's coming to me.
00:14:37It's like I'm paralyzed every time I pick up a paintbrush.
00:14:40It's a really fun career.
00:14:42It's a really fun, creative space to live in.
00:14:49I should probably get going.
00:14:51I'm meeting Parker and my parents at Town Hall
00:14:53for the announcement about who won the contest.
00:14:55The least I can do is support the cause.
00:14:59I'll catch you later.
00:15:01Thank you to all the artists
00:15:03who presented their best winter art.
00:15:05As you know,
00:15:07the winner will design our town's new Christmas mural
00:15:08in his or her own style of choice.
00:15:11The Community Services Department
00:15:14reviewed all of the incredible pieces of art
00:15:16that have been submitted over the past week.
00:15:19And even though we had some late entries to account for,
00:15:22even one being dropped off this morning,
00:15:24we're pleased to announce
00:15:26we've selected a winner.
00:15:28But first,
00:15:31I'd like to congratulate our runner-up
00:15:34who will receive a gift certificate
00:15:36to Wellington Hardware.
00:15:39Let's hear it for Will Campbell!
00:15:47Is that my painting?
00:15:50Mom?
00:15:52Tell me you didn't do this.
00:15:54Ladies and gentlemen,
00:15:56I give to you the first winner
00:15:58of the Wellington Winter Walk's
00:16:00inaugural Christmas mural contest!
00:16:02Oh! Oh!
00:16:04And here's the artist now.
00:16:06Fashionably late,
00:16:08but she's living in New York these days,
00:16:10so we forgive her.
00:16:12Please welcome Olivia Carver.
00:16:14Come on up!
00:16:19Congratulations, Olivia.
00:16:21How about a few words?
00:16:33Thank you so much
00:16:35for selecting me.
00:16:39Uh...
00:16:41Go, Mom!
00:16:50Everyone, please join us
00:16:52for the official mural unveiling
00:16:54at our Christmas block party
00:16:56in two weeks.
00:16:58I think I speak for Wellington
00:17:00when I say we're very excited
00:17:02to see where your imagination leads you.
00:17:04So the space itself
00:17:06hasn't been used for about a year.
00:17:08It's a prime spot.
00:17:10Come on.
00:17:12A lot of traffic
00:17:14is going to pass this way.
00:17:16We're right at the end
00:17:18of the Winter Walk.
00:17:20Anybody driving through town
00:17:22or strolling the shops
00:17:24is going to see your work.
00:17:27Wouldn't that be something?
00:17:29I still have to show you
00:17:31the best part.
00:17:33Come on.
00:17:35So technically,
00:17:36you can use it.
00:17:38But ever since we renovated
00:17:40the community room at Town Hall,
00:17:42we haven't really had a use for it.
00:17:44Figured you could use it to work.
00:17:48She's all yours.
00:17:51If you need anything,
00:17:53give me a ring at Town Hall.
00:17:55And one last thing.
00:17:57Good luck.
00:17:59Thanks, Cody.
00:18:07Pretty big canvas to work with.
00:18:10What are you doing here?
00:18:12Have you come to steal some more paint?
00:18:14Well, I hate to break it to you,
00:18:16but I have not bought any yet.
00:18:18No.
00:18:20No, nothing like that.
00:18:22I just came to see
00:18:24what could have been.
00:18:26Don't get me wrong.
00:18:28I'm very proud to be runner-up.
00:18:30But I was this close
00:18:32to getting my first real gig.
00:18:34I'm sorry.
00:18:36Yeah.
00:18:38Yeah, there goes my big shot
00:18:40down the drain,
00:18:42which I guess makes us rivals?
00:18:45Well, don't worry.
00:18:47I am not 100% sure
00:18:49that I'm even doing it yet,
00:18:51so you still have some hope.
00:18:53What?
00:18:55That paint that you stole,
00:18:57it didn't go to waste.
00:18:59Your piece was really good,
00:19:01as much as I hate to admit it.
00:19:03I've always been a fan
00:19:04of impressionism.
00:19:08I went through a big Monet phase
00:19:10in college.
00:19:12Didn't we all?
00:19:14I mean, we're only human.
00:19:16Congratulations.
00:19:18And I really am looking forward
00:19:20to seeing what you paint.
00:19:22Thanks.
00:19:24But just so you know,
00:19:26if you do chicken out,
00:19:28I will be there to swoop in
00:19:30and do what you couldn't.
00:19:32Wow.
00:19:34Are you having a nice moment there?
00:19:36Honestly, it's a gift.
00:19:38Well, goodbye.
00:19:40I'm trying not to freeze out here.
00:19:42I hope your mural
00:19:44doesn't need any mistletoe green.
00:19:52Wow.
00:19:54Everyone is quite
00:19:56industrious this evening.
00:19:58You know what they say
00:20:00about idle hands.
00:20:02Parker, I'm so glad
00:20:04he's been itching for some new projects
00:20:06now that he's home all the time.
00:20:08I'll keep him busy.
00:20:10Good work.
00:20:14Is this art I see
00:20:16unfolding around me?
00:20:18I'm just trying to jot down
00:20:20some design ideas for the mural.
00:20:22And how's that going?
00:20:29Okay.
00:20:31Well, even though it is
00:20:32an uphill battle,
00:20:34I'm glad to see you giving it
00:20:36some serious thought.
00:20:38Well, the least I can do
00:20:40is go down swinging.
00:20:42Especially with Will on standby
00:20:44waiting for me to fail.
00:20:46Will?
00:20:48The paint thief from the hardware store.
00:20:50He was the runner-up
00:20:52and he ambushed me at the mural today.
00:20:54He's so frustrating.
00:20:56I've never met someone
00:20:58who can bounce from sweet
00:21:00to obnoxious so gracefully.
00:21:02It is not like that.
00:21:04So you can just get that thought
00:21:06out of your head.
00:21:08I didn't say anything.
00:21:10Wow.
00:21:12Hey, I heard you had coffee
00:21:14with Ivy today.
00:21:16You guys haven't palled around
00:21:18in a while?
00:21:20Yeah, it was really great
00:21:22catching up.
00:21:23Good.
00:21:25I'm actually taking Parker
00:21:27to visit her at the school tomorrow.
00:21:29Apparently there's this great
00:21:30new art teacher.
00:21:32Come on, bud.
00:21:34I bet it'll be fun.
00:21:36Trust me, you are both
00:21:38going to like the art teacher.
00:21:40It is so weird being back here.
00:21:42I know.
00:21:44I have to remind myself
00:21:46that I'm the adult here.
00:21:48Oh, we're walking, please.
00:21:50All right, Parker.
00:21:52You are going to love
00:21:54our art project today
00:21:56and you're going to love
00:21:58our new art teacher.
00:22:01Oh, hey.
00:22:03So listen up, everybody.
00:22:05We have a special guest today.
00:22:07What's your name, bud?
00:22:10His name's Parker.
00:22:15Great.
00:22:18Parker, welcome.
00:22:20Let's get you set up, okay?
00:22:22Got a little spot for you
00:22:24right over here.
00:22:26Yeah, lucky for you,
00:22:27one of our regulars
00:22:28couldn't make it in today,
00:22:29so you don't have to share.
00:22:31That's for you.
00:22:33You good to get started
00:22:34while I go talk to your mom for a sec?
00:22:36Great.
00:22:37I'll be right back.
00:22:45You know, if you wanted to see me,
00:22:47you didn't have to hire a child
00:22:48to pretend to be your son.
00:22:50Wow.
00:22:52You are really something.
00:22:54That's what they tell me.
00:22:56She told you we've met already?
00:22:57No.
00:22:59This is the guy
00:23:01I was telling you about
00:23:03from the paint store.
00:23:05Oh, wow, you're the paint thief.
00:23:07Okay, that nickname's
00:23:08really taking off.
00:23:10Well, at least Parker
00:23:12and the other children
00:23:13can benefit from the spoils
00:23:15of my criminal enterprise.
00:23:17You could have told me
00:23:18that you were buying supplies
00:23:20for a children's
00:23:21after-school art program.
00:23:23Yeah, but I'm not the bragging type.
00:23:25I'm just your average,
00:23:26down-to-earth,
00:23:28handsome, talented,
00:23:29selfless public educator
00:23:31who is changing children's lives
00:23:32one at a time.
00:23:35Well, it's nice of you
00:23:36to drop by.
00:23:37You're welcome to hang out,
00:23:39but if you two have plans,
00:23:41I'll be with the kids
00:23:42for another hour or so.
00:23:46Hey, Parker.
00:23:48Still up for coffee?
00:23:50I don't know.
00:23:52Um, maybe I should
00:23:54stick around for a while
00:23:55and make sure Parker's okay.
00:23:57So, let me guess.
00:23:59This is
00:24:00Santa's dirty socks, right?
00:24:02They're stockings.
00:24:04Oh, stockings.
00:24:05Yeah, I knew that.
00:24:06I knew that.
00:24:07Why don't you wait here a minute?
00:24:08I'll go get my jacket,
00:24:09and if you're still feeling
00:24:10uneasy when I get back,
00:24:12we can raincheck, okay?
00:24:13Sound good?
00:24:14Yeah, okay.
00:24:21Hey, uh,
00:24:22would it be okay
00:24:23if I pulled up a chair
00:24:24and painted next to you?
00:24:25I'm kind of lonely
00:24:26up at my desk.
00:24:27Sure.
00:24:28Yeah?
00:24:29Thanks.
00:24:30I'll be right back.
00:24:48All right, all set.
00:24:50How are we feeling?
00:24:52You know what?
00:24:54Let's go get that coffee.
00:24:56Great.
00:25:17Nice.
00:25:22Do you think we need one more?
00:25:27What, are you stalking me now?
00:25:29No.
00:25:30I found you via legitimate means.
00:25:32I interrogated Ivy.
00:25:34Sorry.
00:25:35I hope I'm not interrupting.
00:25:36I'm Will.
00:25:37Will.
00:25:38Mac.
00:25:39Nice to meet you.
00:25:40Uh,
00:25:41I just wanted to
00:25:42talk to you about something
00:25:43before, but I didn't want to
00:25:44bring it up in front of Parker.
00:25:45Um,
00:25:46but if now's not a good time.
00:25:48You know, actually,
00:25:49I was just gonna
00:25:50head inside and scope out
00:25:51the base of operations.
00:25:52Why don't you two, uh,
00:25:53chat while she works?
00:25:56Okay.
00:25:57Thanks, Mac.
00:25:58Nice meeting you.
00:25:59You too.
00:26:03So?
00:26:04What's up?
00:26:06Yeah, I just wanted to ask you
00:26:07if you'd mind?
00:26:16I wanted to ask you
00:26:17something about Parker,
00:26:18actually.
00:26:19Oh.
00:26:22It's okay.
00:26:23Nothing's wrong.
00:26:24He did great in class.
00:26:25I just noticed that he's, uh,
00:26:27I guess a little
00:26:28apprehensive
00:26:29around other kids.
00:26:31Oh.
00:26:32Um.
00:26:34Yeah.
00:26:36He's been having
00:26:37some trouble the past
00:26:38couple of years.
00:26:40He used to be such
00:26:41an outgoing kid,
00:26:42and then
00:26:43when his dad died,
00:26:44he just sort of...
00:26:45That's gotta be really tough
00:26:47for both of you.
00:26:50Have you tried
00:26:51art therapy
00:26:52for Parker?
00:26:55Yes.
00:26:56Once.
00:26:57In New York.
00:26:58But it
00:26:59didn't really take.
00:27:00Hmm.
00:27:01Why?
00:27:03Well,
00:27:04I kinda know
00:27:05what Parker's going through.
00:27:07And I thought I might help him
00:27:08the way that it helped me.
00:27:10My dad passed
00:27:11when I was 13.
00:27:12Oh, wow.
00:27:14I'm so sorry, Will.
00:27:16Yeah.
00:27:17I really didn't know
00:27:18how to process it
00:27:19at the time.
00:27:21And art therapy
00:27:22just worked.
00:27:24So I'm actually
00:27:25a certified art therapist.
00:27:27Anyway, all that to say,
00:27:28if you want,
00:27:29I would be happy
00:27:30to sit down with Parker.
00:27:32That's really generous.
00:27:34But we're heading home
00:27:35in a couple weeks.
00:27:36So.
00:27:37Yeah.
00:27:38Right.
00:27:39I get it.
00:27:41If you change your mind, though,
00:27:42I'll be around.
00:27:43Winter break just started,
00:27:44so I've got plenty
00:27:45of time on my hands.
00:27:47I'll think about it.
00:27:49Okay.
00:27:50You're staying in town
00:27:51for the holidays?
00:27:52You know,
00:27:53if you're looking
00:27:54for something to do...
00:27:56Oh.
00:27:57Okay.
00:28:00Yeah.
00:28:01Yeah, let's do it.
00:28:09So I guess
00:28:10it's kinda like
00:28:11I am working
00:28:12on the mural after all.
00:28:18Oh.
00:28:31Oh,
00:28:32texting with Will.
00:28:34Mom.
00:28:35Boundaries.
00:28:37It was right there.
00:28:38Sorry.
00:28:39And you're welcome
00:28:40for the freshly
00:28:41baked cookies, by the way.
00:28:42I'll go get you some milk.
00:28:44Mom.
00:28:45I'm an adult woman.
00:28:46I don't need
00:28:47a glass of milk.
00:28:48Oh, don't be silly.
00:28:49You love milk
00:28:50with your cookies.
00:28:51I'll be right back.
00:29:13As an artist,
00:29:14I need you
00:29:15to level with me.
00:29:16Do either of these
00:29:17ideas work?
00:29:20I think there are
00:29:21elements of each
00:29:22that work.
00:29:23I knew it.
00:29:24They're terrible.
00:29:25That's not what I said.
00:29:27Look,
00:29:28there's good stuff in here.
00:29:29I think you just need to
00:29:31distill it down
00:29:32into a unifying theme.
00:29:34You know?
00:29:36Okay.
00:29:38What do you like
00:29:39about this one?
00:29:42I like the colors
00:29:43and
00:29:44the composition.
00:29:45Mm-hmm.
00:29:47It feels almost
00:29:48dreamlike,
00:29:50which is
00:29:51kinda how I remember
00:29:52Wellington as a kid.
00:29:54That's great.
00:29:56And how about this one?
00:29:58Well, obviously,
00:29:59I love it because
00:30:00it reminds me of Parker.
00:30:03It feels like that
00:30:05special kind
00:30:06of Christmas magic.
00:30:08Warm and
00:30:09cozy and
00:30:12comforting.
00:30:13Can't argue with that.
00:30:15Is it crazy
00:30:16to try to do both?
00:30:17To come up with a design
00:30:18that showcases
00:30:19the winter walk,
00:30:20but
00:30:21is also more
00:30:23personal
00:30:24and
00:30:25intimate?
00:30:26Honestly,
00:30:28I think that's a great idea.
00:30:32Okay.
00:30:33Okay.
00:30:35So all I have to do
00:30:36is
00:30:37finalize a design,
00:30:39buy supplies,
00:30:41prep the wall,
00:30:43overcome my creative block,
00:30:46and
00:30:47flawlessly execute
00:30:48a public art project
00:30:49in a week and a half
00:30:50by Christmas Eve.
00:30:55Okay, but
00:30:56the good news is
00:30:58you're not alone.
00:30:59You've got your parents,
00:31:01you've got Parker,
00:31:02you've got me.
00:31:04I bet we could rope
00:31:05Cody and Ivy into it also.
00:31:07Actually, yeah,
00:31:08I've been looking for
00:31:09an excuse to get those two
00:31:10in a room together.
00:31:11I set them up on a date
00:31:12a while ago,
00:31:14and apparently
00:31:15it did not go well.
00:31:18Ivy's been holding a grudge
00:31:19against Cody ever since.
00:31:20Maybe this could help them
00:31:21bury the hatchet.
00:31:23Okay.
00:31:24I'm making a mental note
00:31:25to get the details about that
00:31:27from Ivy ASAP.
00:31:31Are you sure that you want to help?
00:31:33You're not just
00:31:35being nice?
00:31:37Well, actually,
00:31:38I am
00:31:39being nice
00:31:40because
00:31:41I'm nice.
00:31:45Okay.
00:31:48I think I need to just
00:31:50bite the bullet
00:31:51and get started.
00:31:52All right.
00:31:54Let's get started.
00:32:03Hey!
00:32:04Perfect timing.
00:32:05We were just about
00:32:06to get started.
00:32:07You have your lists?
00:32:08Oh, yeah.
00:32:09Olivia, did you see
00:32:10the sales section?
00:32:13Well, I wasn't expecting
00:32:14to see you here.
00:32:15Hey, Ivy.
00:32:17How are you?
00:32:18I've been fine
00:32:19ever since you stood me up.
00:32:20Come on.
00:32:21I didn't stand you up.
00:32:22I left in the middle
00:32:23of the date.
00:32:25Okay.
00:32:26I know that isn't better.
00:32:28You left me with the bill
00:32:29at a fancy restaurant
00:32:30so you could go play bingo.
00:32:31I Venmo'd you,
00:32:32and I didn't play bingo.
00:32:34I hosted bingo
00:32:35at town hall.
00:32:36Our normal guy flaked.
00:32:37I couldn't just abandon
00:32:38the senior group.
00:32:39No, so you just
00:32:40abandoned me.
00:32:42I can see that
00:32:43there are still
00:32:44some fresh wounds here.
00:32:45How about we split up,
00:32:47tackle our lists separately,
00:32:49and maybe
00:32:50cool off a little bit?
00:32:52That is a great idea.
00:32:53So, Ivy,
00:32:54you will come and
00:32:55grab some paint with me,
00:32:56and, um,
00:32:57Cody and Will,
00:32:58you're on
00:32:59tools and equipment.
00:33:01Let me just remind everyone
00:33:02we're dealing with
00:33:03a limited budget.
00:33:04Until projects like this
00:33:05gain traction,
00:33:06the Community Services
00:33:07department has
00:33:08tight purse strings.
00:33:09That's fine.
00:33:10I'm sure you'll just
00:33:11stick us with the bill anyway.
00:33:12Okay,
00:33:13enough reminiscing.
00:33:15You couldn't have warned me
00:33:16I was walking into an ambush?
00:33:17Oh, no,
00:33:18I could have.
00:33:24Wow,
00:33:25if I had known
00:33:26it was that bad,
00:33:27I would have had Will
00:33:28tell Cody to stay home.
00:33:29I'm fine.
00:33:30I'm over it.
00:33:31I just wanted to see him squirm.
00:33:35So,
00:33:37you and Will
00:33:38are getting pretty chummy?
00:33:40Yeah,
00:33:41well,
00:33:42turns out
00:33:43when he's not being obnoxious,
00:33:44he's actually
00:33:46kind of nice
00:33:47and helpful.
00:33:48Mm-hmm.
00:33:49Nice
00:33:50and
00:33:51helpful
00:33:52and
00:33:53hot.
00:33:54Okay,
00:33:55pump the brakes.
00:33:56My mom already
00:33:57jumped to that conclusion.
00:33:58Oh, come on.
00:33:59Stop acting like
00:34:00it's a crazy thought.
00:34:01Nothing wrong with
00:34:02thinking someone's cute.
00:34:03Cute has nothing
00:34:04to do with it.
00:34:05We're just
00:34:06collaborating.
00:34:07You don't have to
00:34:08look too far into it.
00:34:09Yeah, we actually have
00:34:10another session booked
00:34:11for tonight.
00:34:12Same?
00:34:13And you really still think
00:34:14there's nothing more going on?
00:34:15Look, until she gives me
00:34:16reason to believe otherwise,
00:34:17there's nothing romantic
00:34:18happening, okay?
00:34:31Olivia,
00:34:33I see you've been busy.
00:34:35My dad mentioned
00:34:36that he was going to
00:34:37stop by and clean today.
00:34:39Said I needed
00:34:40a proper studio
00:34:41to work with.
00:34:42Huh,
00:34:43so despite Cody
00:34:44abandoning this place,
00:34:45it's thriving, too.
00:34:46Sounds familiar.
00:34:47Uh-huh.
00:34:48Okay,
00:34:49enough lollygagging.
00:34:50There's still
00:34:51plenty of supplies
00:34:52to bring in from outside.
00:35:05All right,
00:35:06have a look.
00:35:08You can choose
00:35:09whatever you'd like, Parker.
00:35:11Want to paint for an hour?
00:35:12We can do that.
00:35:14Want to pound some clay
00:35:15and make a sculpture?
00:35:16That's cool, too.
00:35:21Oh,
00:35:22I think he has his eye
00:35:23on something.
00:35:24What do you see?
00:35:27The pastels.
00:35:29Excellent choice.
00:35:30Very expressive.
00:35:31What should I draw?
00:35:33Honestly,
00:35:34anything you want.
00:35:36This is all about
00:35:37you,
00:35:38how you're feeling right now.
00:35:40I'm just here to
00:35:41guide you
00:35:42as much or as little
00:35:43as you need.
00:35:48Would it be okay
00:35:49if your mom and I
00:35:50joined you?
00:35:52Yeah,
00:35:53nice.
00:35:55Okay,
00:35:56you've got a pad.
00:35:57Let's give one to your mom.
00:36:00And I get one, too.
00:36:03So,
00:36:05I'll tell you how I'm feeling.
00:36:07I'm feeling a bit nostalgic.

00:37:21You know,
00:37:23I miss him a lot.
00:37:25He was the best.
00:37:29But I know
00:37:30he's looking down on me.
00:37:32Even right now.
00:37:36If you want,
00:37:37I can tell you all about him
00:37:38while we do our drawing.
00:37:40Yeah?
00:37:46Your stuff?
00:37:47Yeah.
00:37:48Okay.
00:37:50Whew.
00:37:51Feel that cold wind.
00:37:53Well, Parker,
00:37:54I think you did
00:37:55a great job today.
00:37:56And this
00:37:58turned out so well.
00:37:59Good job.
00:38:01Olivia?
00:38:02You
00:38:03have some homework.
00:38:06Hey, bud.
00:38:07Can you make sure
00:38:08that your mom has at least
00:38:09something drawn
00:38:10before our next session?
00:38:12I got you covered.
00:38:14Yeah.
00:38:16That's my guy.
00:38:20Our next session?
00:38:22Yeah.
00:38:23I figured
00:38:24if you're both up for it
00:38:25before you head back
00:38:26to the city.
00:38:28I want to thank you, Will.
00:38:29I know this means
00:38:30a lot to Parker.
00:38:32And
00:38:34it means a lot to me, too.
00:38:41Mom,
00:38:42can you start the car?
00:38:43I'm freezing.
00:38:45Yeah, bud.
00:38:46I'll be right there.
00:38:48I should probably...
00:38:49Yeah.
00:38:51Um,
00:38:52are you sure
00:38:53that you're okay
00:38:54to lock up?
00:38:55Yeah, yeah.
00:38:56I've got to clean up
00:38:57anyway, so...
00:38:58Okay.
00:38:59All good.
00:39:00Okay.
00:39:01Um,
00:39:02thanks again, Will.
00:39:03You got it.
00:39:05Oh,
00:39:06you sure
00:39:07that you're okay, too, babe?
00:39:08Yeah, I'm fine.
00:39:09I really am.
00:39:10Anyway,
00:39:11I've got to go.
00:39:12Okay.
00:39:13Get home safe,
00:39:14and I'll talk to you
00:39:15soon.
00:39:16Okay, babe.
00:39:17Bye.
00:39:18Bye.
00:39:20Bye, Parker.
00:39:21I'll see you later.
00:39:22Bye.
00:39:23Bye, baby.
00:39:24Bye.
00:39:25I've got to get
00:39:26to work.
00:39:27Okay.
00:39:28I'll see you later.
00:39:29Bye, baby.
00:39:30Bye.
00:39:31Bye.
00:39:32Bye.
00:39:33♪♪
00:39:41♪♪
00:39:49♪♪
00:39:59It's absolutely beautiful.
00:40:02Parker's first Christmas.
00:40:04He was the best gift anyone could have asked for.
00:40:08I don't know what happened.
00:40:10I was thinking about Parker and how easily he started his drawing.
00:40:15Something just clicked.
00:40:17My hand started moving on its own.
00:40:20Well, it must have been tough putting this down on paper.
00:40:23I'm proud of you.
00:40:25At any rate, it should help with the mural, right?
00:40:28Have the creative floodgates been opened?
00:40:33Drawing this was one thing.
00:40:36Painting a huge mural for everyone to see,
00:40:39that's a whole different animal.
00:40:43But I'm ready to try.
00:40:45Good.
00:40:51What do you mean by a moment?
00:40:54I was standing outside saying goodnight,
00:40:57and I don't know, it felt like something could have happened.
00:41:02And?
00:41:04Did it?
00:41:05No, of course not.
00:41:06Don't say it like it's ridiculous.
00:41:08You're both young, single, attractive.
00:41:11Aw, thanks, man.
00:41:13I'm just saying, what's the holdup?
00:41:15Don't get me wrong, okay?
00:41:17I wanted to kiss her.
00:41:19But, you know, Parker was there.
00:41:24And I guess I feel like it's not my place to make a move like that.
00:41:29Olivia needs to decide when it's right,
00:41:32for her and for Parker.
00:41:34Sure, I get that.
00:41:36But don't you think last night might have been some kind of indication she's into you?
00:41:40It was basically a date.
00:41:42Me doing art therapy with her son, that was a date?
00:41:44Wouldn't even breach the top five of the weirdest first dates I've been on.
00:41:50I don't know.
00:41:55You really think she might have considered last night a date?
00:41:57If I was her, I'd date you before letting you give my kid therapy.
00:42:01Hey!
00:42:05Was that a wreath?
00:42:07Yes, but I was aiming at Cody.
00:42:09Oh, well, now I see why you became an artist.
00:42:15Wow, what happened in here? It looks great.
00:42:18Well, I figured we're going to be spending a lot of time here.
00:42:21Might as well make it festive.
00:42:23How do you rope you into this?
00:42:25I honestly don't know.
00:42:27I should be at town hall, and now that you're here, I feel less guilty about leaving.
00:42:32Ornaments exchange tonight, you guys.
00:42:35And I noticed that wall is still alarmingly blank.
00:42:38Don't worry, that is going to change very soon.
00:42:41Good luck.
00:42:43Thanks, man. See you later.
00:42:46So, are we actually going to go paint, or were you just trying to get rid of Cody?
00:42:52A little bit of both.
00:42:54I figured we could start by finishing up the actual mural frame,
00:42:59and I'll tell you all about my new design idea.
00:43:03New design idea? Now you're talking.
00:43:06Well, lead the way.
00:43:09So, yeah.
00:43:11Most of the design would be more traditional, kind of like the Norman Rockwell idea,
00:43:15but with some different styles thrown in.
00:43:17So the trees and the mountains could be more classical landscape style,
00:43:23and then throw in some lights and Christmas decorations for the holidays.
00:43:28Maybe some surrealism? A couple of nutcrackers melting?
00:43:33Seriously? I think that sounds great.
00:43:36It's ambitious, but it's great.
00:43:42I wanted to thank you again, Will, for last night.
00:43:46It was really wonderful.
00:43:49And not just because I'm feeling inspired.
00:43:52Parker and I have a lot in common.
00:43:56It was really wonderful.
00:43:58And not just because I'm feeling inspired.
00:44:01Parker is so proud of his drawing.
00:44:04He would not stop talking about you at breakfast.
00:44:07Well, I'm glad I could help.
00:44:09Oh, that reminds me.
00:44:13My homework. As requested.
00:44:15Ah, okay.
00:44:19Oh, wow.
00:44:21Wow.
00:44:23Is that...
00:44:24It's Tom. With Parker.
00:44:27It's my favorite Christmas memory.
00:44:30It's beautiful.
00:44:34Like I said, if Parker wants to do another session with me while you're still here,
00:44:39I'd be happy to.
00:44:41Still got all the supplies in there.
00:44:47You really love this, don't you?
00:44:50Art therapy? Teaching?
00:44:52I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
00:44:55Me, no offense, but if it weren't for the severe lack of teaching opportunities in Boston,
00:44:59I probably wouldn't have ended up in Wellington.
00:45:03But it turned out for the best.
00:45:09I think it looks pretty good.
00:45:11Yeah. Now all you've got to do is paint.
00:45:15Wow, this place is packed.
00:45:17When you said ornament exchange, I was picturing, like, ten people.
00:45:21Oh, that's because Cody's been killing it lately.
00:45:23You know, it's only the second year that we've done this, and it's already a Wellington staple.
00:45:27Hey, Parker.
00:45:29Are you sure you want to hang that one?
00:45:33You worked so hard on it.
00:45:35Yeah, I'm sure.
00:45:37I think it's cool someone else is going to get to put it up.
00:45:41Can you help me hang it? I need someone tall to lift me.
00:45:44What? You think I'm tall?
00:45:46That's amazing.
00:45:48Sure. Can I?
00:45:50Yeah.
00:45:51All right, let's go pick the best spot.
00:45:53Just be careful, please.
00:45:55Boom.
00:45:57Parker seems to be really taking to Will.
00:46:01I mean, it probably helps that Will is basically a big kid,
00:46:04having to deal with a lot of people.
00:46:07I mean, it probably helps that Will is basically a big kid himself.
00:46:12Yeah, I know what you mean.
00:46:15It's like Parker's starting to come out of his shell a little bit.
00:46:19And boy, is he ever responding to Will's art therapy.
00:46:23You two are joined at the hip lately.
00:46:26Yeah, well, as much as I hate to admit it,
00:46:30Will has been a huge help so far.
00:46:33I don't think I'd be able to finish in time on my own.
00:46:36I'm not talking about the painting, Olivia.
00:46:39I'm talking about this.
00:46:41All up. One, two, three.
00:46:45Cookies. Cookies!
00:46:47Just one. Just a single.
00:46:51Just a single one.
00:46:53Of course you do.
00:47:24Yes!
00:47:26Now that is what I'm talking about.
00:47:30I'm telling you, buddy, it feels great.
00:47:33You're not going to get in trouble. I promise.
00:47:41Oh!
00:47:43See? Good, right?
00:47:46Go crazy. Yeah, there's a whole stack.
00:47:49What is going on in here?
00:47:51Oh, that?
00:47:54That's therapy.
00:47:57Um, since you're already here,
00:48:01do you want to...
00:48:12Oh, yeah!
00:48:14Doesn't that feel great?
00:48:16Okay, yes.
00:48:18I will admit, that feels pretty amazing.
00:48:21Kind of like a weight has been lifted.
00:48:23Kind of like a weight has been lifted.
00:48:25Fantastic.
00:48:27Parker, you did so well at this first part of the process.
00:48:31Now what we get to do is choose the pieces that you want to use
00:48:35in your mosaic.
00:48:37I can hear the bells, the bells are ringing.
00:48:40I can hear the children playing and singing.
00:48:44I've been going back to that old feeling.
00:48:48Time to turn it back to that old feeling.
00:48:52Take me home, take me home
00:48:56To Christmas
00:48:59I'll be home, I'll be home
00:49:03For Christmas
00:49:07New memories, waiting for me
00:49:11There's no place that I'd rather be
00:49:14Oh, home, take me home
00:49:18To Christmas
00:49:20To Christmas
00:49:49Hello? Anyone home?
00:49:52Hey.
00:49:53Hi.
00:49:54I'm glad I didn't miss you.
00:49:56I come bearing gifts.
00:49:59Is that takeout?
00:50:01There's a great Thai place just around the corner.
00:50:03I felt bad that I couldn't help out earlier,
00:50:05so I came to bribe you.
00:50:08I hope you like pad see you.
00:50:10There's enough for two.
00:50:13That sounds perfect.
00:50:16That sounds perfect.
00:50:18Four brothers?
00:50:20I cannot imagine five kids.
00:50:24Yeah, I don't think my parents could either.
00:50:26I am the youngest by nine years.
00:50:28Aw, you're a little accident baby.
00:50:30Well, you know, I prefer surprise.
00:50:34So what's your brother's deal?
00:50:36They all married with kids?
00:50:38Oh yeah.
00:50:39I have ten nieces and nephews.
00:50:41Wow.
00:50:43Christmas at your mom's must be wild.
00:50:45Yeah, it is.
00:50:46Of course, it still doesn't stop my mom from asking
00:50:49when I will be giving her more grandchildren.
00:50:53But I just don't think I'm really cut out for that.
00:50:59For being a parent?
00:51:03Will, come on, I've seen you teach.
00:51:06And with Parker, obviously, you'd be great at it.
00:51:11Sorry, um, you did not ask my opinion on that.
00:51:15You're okay.
00:51:21I know that it's stupid, but
00:51:26when my dad died, it hit me so hard.
00:51:29As a kid, I was sad and angry and confused.
00:51:34And I think, I think one day I'll be gone.
00:51:37And when that happens, I don't want my kid
00:51:40to have to live through what I did.
00:51:46Will, that is not stupid.
00:51:52Losing someone you love is really hard.
00:51:58But you can't let the fear of losing someone
00:52:01outweigh the joy of loving them.
00:52:06There's not a day that goes by that I don't miss Tom.
00:52:13But that pain and that grief, it's worth it.
00:52:20Because of all of the wonderful memories that I have of him.
00:52:25And yeah, I wish that I could spare Parker
00:52:29the pain of having lost his dad.
00:52:33But that would mean losing the good parts, too.
00:52:40And I know he wouldn't trade those memories for anything.
00:52:51Sounds like it was kind of awkward.
00:52:53It was, at first, but then we started painting
00:52:57and everything went back to normal.
00:52:59Well, you guys did kind of bare your souls
00:53:01to each other last night.
00:53:02That's a heavy conversation to come back from.
00:53:04Especially when it's with someone he likes so much.
00:53:07Okay, you have to stop saying that he likes me.
00:53:11I refuse. I will die on this hill.
00:53:17I guess I did see another side of him last night.
00:53:20It was nice having a real conversation.
00:53:23He must make you feel comfortable.
00:53:25Yeah, he does.
00:53:28I think it's great.
00:53:30And you should, too.
00:53:37How's it going over there?
00:53:40That's great. Is that us?
00:53:43Yeah, I think I need to make your head bigger.
00:53:46Excuse me?
00:53:50Mouth. Ear. Ear. Eyes.
00:53:56That's better.
00:53:57Excuse me.
00:53:59That's perfect.
00:54:00Excuse me.
00:54:09Hey, bud, I wanted to talk to you about something.
00:54:13So what is it?
00:54:17So I know Christmas here so far has been a lot of fun.
00:54:25Yeah, I like getting to see Grandma and Grandpa all the time.
00:54:30I like Mr. Campbell, too. He's funny.
00:54:33Yeah, he's kind of a goofball, huh?
00:54:36Yeah, he helped me make friends at the Christmas craft club.
00:54:41That's great. I'm so glad.
00:54:46I guess we're really going to miss all this when we head home after Christmas.
00:54:53Yeah.
00:54:56But the good news is that Wellington is not that far from New York.
00:55:02So we don't have to wait until Christmas to visit again.
00:55:05When can we come back?
00:55:06Whenever you want. I mean, within reason.
00:55:09It is a five-hour drive.
00:55:11Okay.
00:55:15It's Dad.
00:55:28He will always be with us, no matter what.
00:55:32You know that, right?
00:55:45Hey, Mom.
00:55:48Hey.
00:55:51What's going on?
00:55:52Oh, not much. Should be ready soon.
00:55:55This all looks great, but I thought...
00:55:57You said we were having a quick family dinner. I have to keep working on the mural after this.
00:56:02Oh, I know that, sweetheart. We won't keep you too long.
00:56:05Yeah, anyway, I just felt like making something special.
00:56:09Hey, Parks, look who's here.
00:56:12Mr. Campbell!
00:56:14Hey, Parker. Nice to see you.
00:56:17Have a seat, Will.
00:56:18Oh, thanks.
00:56:20Mom.
00:56:23Did you invite Will to dinner and forget to tell me about it?
00:56:27No, I didn't forget. I told you this morning.
00:56:30No, you didn't.
00:56:32Well, I meant to.
00:56:34I must have just slipped my mind.
00:56:36Well, anyway, I don't know what all the fuss is.
00:56:39He's a very nice man. He's helping you with your mural.
00:56:44Actually, it's appalling that we didn't do this sooner.
00:56:49Well, if you had talked to me about it, I might have mentioned that tonight isn't really the best night.
00:56:57Why not?
00:56:58Because.
00:57:03We had kind of an intense conversation yesterday, and now having him over, I just...
00:57:10I don't want him to get the wrong idea.
00:57:12What wrong idea? It's a pot roast.
00:57:16You're doing that thing where you act all innocent, but secretly, you are plotting.
00:57:23And you are looking too far into this.
00:57:27Now, I want you to march over to that stove and make sure those veggies don't burn while I go greet our guest.
00:57:39Will, I'm so glad you could make it.
00:57:42Thank you. Good to see you.
00:57:45You did that self-portrait. It looked exactly like me.
00:57:48It didn't look anything like me.
00:57:50Seriously, though, the mural is looking great.
00:57:53I can see why Olivia's been able to make it as an artist in New York City. That's not easy.
00:57:58That must feel good, having another artist talk about your work with such high esteem.
00:58:03Well, it may be infrequent, but yes, it is appreciated.
00:58:08I try telling her all the time how great she is, and she doesn't like hearing it.
00:58:12Oh, mother.
00:58:14Now, granted, I'm not an art critic, but I do know good art when I see it.
00:58:18I mean, I get that. My mom's a bit like that.
00:58:21And I admit it can be a bit embarrassing.
00:58:24Okay.
00:58:25It's not that we don't believe you.
00:58:28It's just artists are pretty hard on themselves.
00:58:33And when you have a good mother, you know that she is going to support you no matter what, right?
00:58:38I could draw a stick figure dog with five legs, and my mother would think it was wonderful.
00:58:46So, Betty, I would just take it as a compliment.
00:58:50It means Olivia knows that you love her and you want what's best for her.
00:58:53Mr. Campbell, do you ever visit New York?
00:58:58Um, you know, not as much as I would like to.
00:59:02But now that I have some friends there, maybe I should come more often.
00:59:08If that's okay, of course.
00:59:13Yeah, you are welcome anytime.
00:59:20You need a bag of sugar if we let you.
00:59:23Just like this guy.
00:59:26I hate to cut a lovely evening short, but I think Parker is all s'mored out.
00:59:31Oh.
00:59:32So I better get him to bed.
00:59:33Oh, don't be silly. Your father and I will put him to bed.
00:59:36You can stay and have fun.
00:59:38Come on, sweetheart.
00:59:39Sweetie, I haven't finished roasting my mug.
00:59:40Come on, sweetheart.
00:59:43Yeah, I probably should lay off the sugar.
00:59:48Will, great to have you over.
00:59:51Thank you so much.
00:59:52All right, load me up.
00:59:53Okay.
00:59:54Oh, it's okay, bud.
00:59:55I got you, little buddy.
00:59:56Here we go.
00:59:57Okay, you okay, Dad?
00:59:58Yeah, here we go.
00:59:59Okay.
01:00:00Night, guys.
01:00:01Yeah, good night.
01:00:03Good night.
01:00:04Good night, Mom.
01:00:06Good night, sweetheart.
01:00:15New York does not have stars like this.
01:00:17Well, score one for Wellington.
01:00:20Sure, we might not have the city's culture or food or incredible arts scene or bountiful career opportunities, but we got stars.
01:00:32Yeah.
01:00:36Speaking of career opportunities, I've been so busy with the mural that I haven't even thought about work.
01:00:45What's up?
01:00:46I found out my job is having to downsize, and I'm not sure where I'd land on the chopping block.
01:00:57Really?
01:00:58That's awful.
01:01:02So, if your job is up in the air, is there any reason that you're rushing back right after Christmas?
01:01:10I mean, I don't know what people get up to in New York City, but I will tell you that things are pretty wild here on New Year's Eve.
01:01:18Some of the stores even stay open till nine.
01:01:23Yeah.
01:01:26Well, for all I know, my job could be safe.
01:01:31Plus, I have to head home sometime.
01:01:35Get back to real life.
01:01:38Sure.
01:01:40There's probably nothing here worth sticking around for.
01:01:58Wait.
01:02:00I'm sorry. I-I-I can't. I can't do this.
01:02:04Olivia, I-
01:02:05I need to go.
01:02:35I'm sorry.
01:03:03I'm sorry.
01:03:13Will?
01:03:18Hey.
01:03:19Oh. Hey, Dad.
01:03:21Well, nice to see you, too.
01:03:23Sorry. I-I thought you were Will.
01:03:26We had a weird thing last night, and we haven't had a chance to talk about it yet.
01:03:32Oh.
01:03:33Well, look, if you need an ear to bend, I'm right here.
01:03:37Thanks.
01:03:39What have you got there?
01:03:41Oh, just some tools and hardware.
01:03:43You know, I thought I'd reinforce those shelves, you know, make sure they don't collapse on us.
01:03:47Dad, you are working so hard.
01:03:50You should give yourself the day off.
01:03:52You just retired.
01:03:53You should relax and enjoy it.
01:03:55Sweetie, I-I tried relaxing.
01:03:57It didn't really take.
01:03:58But I am enjoying it.
01:04:00I like to hang out with you.
01:04:02Now, come on, let me pick up some of Will's slack and give you a hand.
01:04:05Thanks.
01:04:06That would be nice.
01:04:11All right, folks, do not forget the nose.
01:04:14And remember, if it ain't red, it ain't Rudolph, right?
01:04:17It's just some boring, average, nameless reindeer.
01:04:21Okay, so you got shut down.
01:04:23What happened next?
01:04:24Nothing.
01:04:25I went home.
01:04:29Great, Doug.
01:04:30Thanks, Will.
01:04:31Love your imagination.
01:04:32Oh, purple's cool, too.
01:04:34Way to go against the grain, Mona.
01:04:36Born rebel over here.
01:04:38Very nice.
01:04:40Very nice, everybody.
01:04:42Have you guys, like, talked about it?
01:04:45Not a peep.
01:04:47I'm not an idiot, Cody.
01:04:48I could take a hint.
01:04:49She needs space.
01:04:50Or she was just caught off guard.
01:04:52Probably felt like one of these in the headlines.
01:04:57Well, suffice it to say, I am not going to make that mistake again.
01:05:01I'm just going to keep my distance.
01:05:05It was a dumb move anyway.
01:05:06She's leaving in a couple days.
01:05:11All right, looks like everybody's putting the finishing touches on their work.
01:05:16Oh, and that's a good thing, because we've just run out of time.
01:05:19Thanks for a fun class, everyone.
01:05:21We've done some great work today.
01:05:22Let's all give a hand to Will for so graciously hosting class on such short notice.
01:05:30Great stuff.
01:05:32Nice.
01:05:34Seriously, man, thank you.
01:05:36I'm going to kill Randy for bailing on bingo day again.
01:05:39Honestly, I enjoy it.
01:05:40You find yourself short-staffed again, you let me know.
01:05:43Well, if the mural goes well, maybe I could convince the city to allocate more funds for our projects.
01:05:48Get you paid for stuff like this.
01:05:50I wouldn't say no to that.
01:05:52So long as Olivia finishes in time.
01:05:54You think she's going to get it done?
01:05:55Oh, no doubt in my mind.
01:05:56At this point, I would just slow her down anyway, so it's probably for the best.
01:06:00Unless she wants you there, of course.
01:06:03That wouldn't be so bad.
01:06:18Hey, you worked late.
01:06:19I was getting worried.
01:06:21Finishing up is taking longer than I thought.
01:06:26Oh, I thought about pulling an all-nighter, but I don't think I could lift a paintbrush right now.
01:06:32You close?
01:06:34Good.
01:06:35Just one last section I haven't been able to nail down.
01:06:38A scene with a family on Christmas.
01:06:41I painted their faces a dozen times, but it's just never looked right.
01:06:47Hoping to knock it out tomorrow morning before the unveiling.
01:06:51You know, your father told me he had a really nice time working with you today.
01:06:56It was quite the conversation, from what I understand.
01:07:00You know, if you have anything you want to talk about, I'm always here.
01:07:07I appreciate that you want to help, but sometimes your way of helping just kind of complicates things.
01:07:16I'm sure I don't even know what you're talking about.
01:07:19Mom, come on.
01:07:22You knew that I was having trouble painting, so you secretly entered me in a contest to try to motivate me.
01:07:30You saw that Will and I were getting along, so you invited him over for dinner and left us stargazing.
01:07:36Yes, and now you almost finished painting a mural and you kissed a man you liked.
01:07:44If it took a little nudging from me to get you there, so be it.
01:07:49What about what I want? Doesn't that matter?
01:07:52Of course it does. So tell me, Olivia, what do you want?
01:07:58I just need you to listen. That's all.
01:08:07Okay.
01:08:09All right, well...
01:08:15I guess I'm having trouble figuring out what I'm supposed to do.
01:08:20Being back home, painting again, meeting Will.
01:08:26It's all stirring up a lot of emotions, and they're all good.
01:08:32Which shouldn't be a problem.
01:08:35But then I think about what that means.
01:08:39And the guilt that I feel for falling for another man.
01:08:44For picturing a life outside of New York.
01:08:47And that can't happen.
01:08:49Why not?
01:08:50Because it's the life that Tom and I built together.
01:08:54Parker was born there.
01:08:57And I moved to New York.
01:09:00Parker was born there.
01:09:03And I moved to New York to pursue my career.
01:09:06So if I leave all that behind, then I've failed as an artist.
01:09:10And if I abandon the life that Tom and I were building together,
01:09:15then I have failed as a wife and as a mother.
01:09:19You are not a failure. I need you to hear that.
01:09:23And you do know art exists outside of New York, right?
01:09:27And you are good enough to make it anywhere.
01:09:30And as far as being a failure of a mother?
01:09:33Well, that's nonsense, too.
01:09:36You and I both know no matter where you are,
01:09:38you will give Parker everything you've got.
01:09:41You will never fail that boy.
01:09:44But what about Tom?
01:09:47Tom loved you more than anything.
01:09:49And he'll always be a part of you.
01:09:51And he'll always want what's best for you.
01:09:53And yes, I know you planned a life with him.
01:09:56And as painful as it is, that plan has changed.
01:10:00And you can't keep holding on to it
01:10:03at the expense of building a life for you and Parker.
01:10:13So what am I supposed to do?
01:10:16Listen to this.
01:10:18Sometimes it's the only guide you've got.
01:10:21And you're not the only one going through a new life change
01:10:25trying to figure things out.
01:10:27I mean, look at your father.
01:10:29The man's retired and doesn't know what to do with himself.
01:10:32And as for me,
01:10:35I found myself in unfamiliar waters, too.
01:10:40I had to watch my daughter go through something terrible
01:10:44and see this bright flame in her start to fade.
01:10:51I don't want to keep growing apart, Olivia.
01:10:54I want to be here for you, if you'll let me.
01:11:08It is very unfair of you to spring this conversation on me
01:11:12when I am physically incapable of escaping.
01:11:17Come here, sweetheart.
01:11:20You'll be fine.
01:11:22Yeah.
01:11:24You'll get past this.
01:11:31Mom!
01:11:33Mom?
01:11:35Hey, Mom!
01:11:36Merry Christmas Eve!
01:11:38Mom, it's Christmas Eve!
01:11:42Merry Christmas Eve, bud.
01:11:44Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa.
01:11:46I wanted to talk to you about something.
01:11:48Do you have a second?
01:11:50Um...
01:11:53So...
01:11:56I know the plan was to head home in a couple days.
01:12:00But I was wondering how you would feel about staying a little longer.
01:12:05Maybe living in Wellington for a while?
01:12:09Like, for good?
01:12:12I don't know. Maybe.
01:12:15What about school?
01:12:17Yeah, you'd have to change schools.
01:12:20And I know that would be tough.
01:12:22So, hey, please, I need you to be honest with me, okay?
01:12:25Because we can just forget this whole thing right now.
01:12:33It'll be tough for me, too.
01:12:36It's our home.
01:12:38And it's where your dad...
01:12:41His memory lives there.
01:12:43Yeah.
01:12:49Daddy doesn't live there.
01:12:51He's here. He's wherever we are.
01:12:57You're right.
01:12:59Of course you're right.
01:13:02Your dad and I will always love you.
01:13:04You know that, right?
01:13:07Are you sure you're okay with all this?
01:13:09Yeah. But I do have a question.
01:13:12If I go to school here, does that mean Mr. Campbell will be my art teacher?
01:13:19I think so.
01:13:21If nothing else, I'm sure he would love to teach you.
01:13:24Yes!
01:13:26Grandma! Grandpa! This way!
01:13:37Cody Miller, Director of Recreation and Community Services. How can I help you?
01:13:40Hey, Cody. It's Olivia.
01:13:42Olivia. Great to hear from you. You got good news for me?
01:13:45Oh, uh, yeah. I'm just on my way to the mural to do some final touch-ups.
01:13:49But we should be all good for the unveiling this evening.
01:13:52Okay, good.
01:13:55If you'd told me you weren't done, I might have had a heart attack.
01:13:58Forget I said that. I have full faith in you.
01:14:00Right.
01:14:03I'm actually calling because I wanted to get your help with something.
01:14:07Of course. Anything you need.
01:14:09I'm sure by now you have seen Will and you've heard what's going on.
01:14:15And I was hoping...
01:14:19Will and I haven't talked since that night and I really want him to be there tonight.
01:14:27It's important.
01:14:29So, do you think you could make sure that he comes?
01:14:33That's it?
01:14:35Sure, I was going to do that anyway.
01:14:37He needs to support the Community Services Department. And me, frankly.
01:14:41I did want to talk to you about something else. Do you have some time right now?
01:14:58Hey! Merry Christmas.
01:15:00Hi, Cody. Hi.
01:15:02He's so cute.
01:15:08Good evening, everyone.
01:15:10On behalf of the Community Services Department, it gives me great joy to welcome you
01:15:15to the Wellington Winter Walk's inaugural Christmas Eve mural unveiling.
01:15:24In our ongoing efforts to engage the community through the arts,
01:15:28we hope this is the first of many new initiatives to bring our town together.
01:15:34But enough from me. We're here for the art.
01:15:37And it only makes sense to turn things over to the artist.
01:15:40So let's all give a big hand for Olivia.
01:15:50Thank you so much, everyone.
01:15:52It really means the world that you all came out tonight.
01:15:58I have a lot of people in my life that I want to thank.
01:16:03My dad, Mac, who worked tirelessly to make sure that we had a proper space to work.
01:16:14My mom, Betty, who is the reason I entered this contest and who is always rooting for me.
01:16:23My son, Parker, who is my everything.
01:16:29And one more person.
01:16:32It was with the help of a fellow artist that I was able to overcome my creative block
01:16:39and finally open myself back up to letting the world in again.
01:16:46And he deserves to be up here, too.
01:16:49So, Will, would you like to come and help me do the honors?
01:16:58Will Campbell, everyone.
01:17:09Hi.
01:17:10Hi.
01:17:13I want to thank you, Will, for being my partner when I needed one.
01:17:21I know that I made things difficult, but you helped me see what was missing.
01:17:28And you helped me realize what I want.
01:17:35I have just one more announcement before we unveil the mural.
01:17:41I am overjoyed to tell you that the canvas for this piece, which has served as a second home since I've been here,
01:17:51well, it's not going to remain vacant any longer.
01:17:54Working in tandem with the Community Services Department,
01:17:59I will be transforming this space into a studio and a gallery
01:18:03to create and display works of art from myself and fellow Wellington artists,
01:18:10as well as anyone else who wants to engage with the arts.
01:18:15So, without any further ado,
01:18:30we present to you a Wellington Christmas.
01:18:45Yeah!
01:19:00Will,
01:19:05I'm so sorry for pushing you away the other night.
01:19:09I just, I panicked.
01:19:11And then I felt guilty and embarrassed.
01:19:17But I really don't want that to be the way that we leave things.
01:19:21Because I realized that I'm ready to fall in love again.
01:19:28And I am falling in love.
01:19:34But if you don't feel the same way, I completely understand.
01:19:37I just, I wanted to make it perfectly clear that, um,
01:19:46Parker and I, we want you in the picture.
01:20:01I want to be in the picture.
01:20:07I want to be in the picture.
01:20:09I want to be in the picture.
01:20:11I want to be in the picture.
01:20:13I want to be in the picture.
01:20:36Now, these are fun to decorate, but I have to be honest,
01:20:39I'm mostly excited about eating them.
01:20:44Wonderful speech tonight, Olivia.
01:20:46I'm really excited to see what you do with the studio.
01:20:48Thanks, Cody. Me too.
01:20:50Ivy, um, this is long overdue,
01:20:53but I owe you an apology for how I left our date last year.
01:20:56I can sometimes let work get in the way of my personal life.
01:20:59Apology accepted.
01:21:01And also, Cody, I just have to say,
01:21:04I think it's pretty cool how you're always supporting the arts in this town.
01:21:08What? Was that a compliment?
01:21:10Don't let it get to your head.
01:21:13Hey, can I buy you hot chocolate?
01:21:15To make up for my past decisions?
01:21:17They're free, you weirdo.
01:21:19But sure.
01:21:24Mm.
01:21:26I have to thank you, Mom,
01:21:28for giving me an edge.
01:21:30You were right.
01:21:32I needed it.
01:21:35So, Cody says that he thinks
01:21:38he might be able to get me a deal on rent
01:21:41if I agree to host community events at the studio.
01:21:44But that means I'm going to really need some help getting it into shape.
01:21:49I think I can find some time for a project like that.
01:21:52Great.
01:21:54But I am not going to let you work too hard.
01:21:56I know you're having trouble with retirement,
01:21:58but if there's one thing I've learned since I've been home,
01:22:01it's that change is good.
01:22:03Okay.
01:22:05But I'm not too worried about it.
01:22:07You know, with the studio and having you and Parker home again,
01:22:10I think the future is looking pretty bright, sweetie.
01:22:13I think you should get over there.
01:22:15Come on, Mom.
01:22:17You need to make a cookie, too.
01:22:22I would love to.

01:22:31Yeah. Me, too.
01:22:36So, I was thinking.
01:22:39Seeing as how the studio has successfully already hosted some art therapy sessions,
01:22:46it might be a good space to host some more.
01:22:50And it's a great place for any after-school art programs you were thinking of teaching.
01:22:56If that's something you would be interested in.
01:23:00I would love to.
