00:01:30It all started back in the days we were still shoving the Nazis out of Italy. I've been
00:01:45through the whole African campaign. After we hit the beach at Anzio, I got myself a
00:01:49soft spot in the quartermaster's corps, driving a supply truck on the run from Salerno to
00:01:54Naples. I found out quick that a guy with half a brain could make himself a fast buck.
00:02:00I had a gimmick. I never got loaded up with heavy stuff, only negotiable goods that I
00:02:05could turn over for a good price. Strictly A1 merchandise, like cigarettes, canned milk,
00:02:11chocolate, that kind of stuff. Later, someone dreamt up a name for it, Black Market. That
00:02:17made it sound dirty. But nobody got hurt in my operations, and I figured I was collecting
00:02:22a bonus for living. I recognized the signal. It was a guy from my company. He'd been looking
00:02:42for me up and down the road to tip me off that an MP reception committee was waiting
00:02:46for me up ahead in camp. I figured they'd have to get wise one of these days, but I
00:02:50didn't know then how much the brass had on me. Now I had to figure out what I was gonna
00:02:58do. I wasn't gonna let myself be caught red-handed with the profits, no sir. You see, I'd never
00:03:05been dumb enough to send that dough through the mails. Besides, I had nobody left back
00:03:10home that I could trust it with. I carried it where I could see it and touch it, almost
00:03:15next to my skin. I sat on it. I decided to ditch my bundle right where I made it, for
00:03:23the time being, that was. Four million lira, a lot of dough in any man's town, although
00:03:29right now it's only about 6,000 bucks American. Enough folding money to let me sit in the
00:03:35sun while I figured out how to multiply it. This looked like a good spot. So I picked
00:04:02Just to make sure I put my brand deep into it. First letter of my last name. I'd never
00:04:24forget that three. Three was my lucky number. So I walked three steps north and put my spade
00:04:35into the ground. I took a last look around to make sure it was safe to dig a vault for
00:04:42the dough. The MPs grabbed me the minute I got back to camp. They asked me all kinds
00:05:03of questions. And even without the money on me, I didn't have a chance. I got sent up.
00:05:10But four years go by, even if you sweat them out in an army prison detail back home. And
00:05:15from that night on, that little piece of Italy became as much a part of me as my arm. I dreamt
00:05:30about that money as if it was a woman. I got out of the army at last with a swell reference
00:05:44for getting a job, a dishonorable discharge. But it wasn't exactly a job that I was after.
00:05:57It was my dough that I wanted. It took too much red tape to get a passport, so I didn't
00:06:04waste any time contacting a guy named Vince. I was told that he could finagle a way of
00:06:09getting me back over the big pond.
00:06:34Come on, baby. That's it. Come on, Hazel. That's it. Lucky six. Oh, baby.
00:06:41Shut up and watch me make ten the hard way.
00:06:46Oh, that does it. Hey, banker, let me know the 20 bucks in the little, will ya?
00:06:52Sure, sure, Kilo, but there's a limit. I made a money.
00:06:55Well, this will be the last that's happy for it.
00:06:57Hey, get out the top for Vince, will ya? He says not made out of money.
00:07:00Yeah, needless to call it a bank.
00:07:02Thanks, Vince. I'll see you later, huh?
00:07:04That's right, kid. Go get slicked up. I'll show you this burg inside out.
00:07:08Now, wait a minute. Let's you and I settle up.
00:07:11You owe me 200,000, 20,000, 30,000.
00:07:27Have you seen Kilo?
00:07:28No.
00:07:32He's gone.
00:07:44Kilo, wait a minute.
00:07:46I want to talk to you. Just a second.
00:07:50Where are you going, Buck?
00:07:51Let go of me.
00:07:52Running out on me, huh?
00:07:53I said let go of me.
00:07:58You can't get sold to a guy for worrying, can you?
00:08:00You owe me a hatful, Frankie.
00:08:01Eh, chicken scratch.
00:08:02Chicken scratch, Rockefeller says.
00:08:04He owes me 200 for getting him on his ship, 120 for incidentals.
00:08:07That comes to, uh, 320. And he says chicken scratch.
00:08:11You'll get it. You'll get it.
00:08:12Listen, Frank. The deal was you'd pay off when we got Titley.
00:08:17So I figure when is now.
00:08:18First I gotta get it. We're not showing off till six in the morning.
00:08:21Maybe I'd better come along.
00:08:22No.
00:08:23How do I know you're coming back?
00:08:24You don't.
00:08:25So?
00:08:26Think, stupid. Without a passport, this ship's my only way of getting home.
00:08:29I'll be back in three or four hours.
00:08:31You'd better be.
00:08:33Meet me in Ronaldo's bar right up the street.
00:08:37Uh-huh. You see that?
00:08:39Now, wise guy.
00:08:41How are you gonna get past that gate without papers?
00:08:45Is it worth 50 bucks?
00:08:4920.

00:55:38But all I want is a cup of coffee.
00:55:42I'll have a cup of coffee with you.

00:55:58I didn't expect you again today, Frankie.
00:56:01I came to get my coat.
00:56:03Oh yes, it's right here.
00:56:07Hungry again?
00:56:10I could use a cup of coffee.
00:56:11Good idea.
00:56:12I'd like one myself.
00:56:19What gives between you and Conway?
00:56:22Conway?
00:56:23Your glasses.
00:56:26Why'd he slap you?
00:56:28How do you know?
00:56:30Your cheek's still all right.
00:56:32If you must know, he's jealous.
00:56:34He heard I was with you last night.
00:56:36But you weren't.
00:56:37Yes, that's what I told the police.
00:56:39And he saw you leave here this morning and...
00:56:41Try again, baby.
00:56:43You can't make me believe you'd go for a chisel like Conway.
00:56:46He's not your type.
00:56:48And you are?
00:56:49Let's not change the subject.
00:56:51That wallop he gave you was no love trap.
00:56:53What kind of racket you two have?
00:56:58Sit down, Frankie.
00:57:00The coffee will take a minute.
00:57:02All right, tell me.
00:57:05Have you the right to ask?
00:57:08No.
00:57:10I guess not.
00:57:14It's so good to be sitting here in this room with you.
00:57:18After this long time, Frankie.
00:57:24Right now...
00:57:26You are like you used to be.
00:57:29When you had on your uniform.
00:57:32Rough to the touch.
00:57:34With the smell of the cleaners.
00:57:37You and I were good for each other, baby.
00:57:39Why didn't you say goodbye to me, Frankie?
00:57:42I couldn't. I got into trouble.
00:57:44Trouble?
00:57:45Yeah.
00:57:46Army prison.
00:57:47They got me for selling things.
00:57:49Black market.
00:57:51Where do you think all that money came from that I threw around?
00:57:54Oh, yes, you made a lot.
00:57:56Enough.
00:57:58And they got that too.
00:58:00Don't worry, baby.
00:58:07What's that?
00:58:10The coffee.
00:58:12A warning.
00:58:30Come on.
00:58:49He's been gone quite a while.
00:58:51You talk of arresting?
00:58:54This is a delicate question.
00:58:56You bring up Signore.
00:58:59He's a woman to be trusted.
00:59:02The Bible shows us to Eve.
00:59:05But what were her motives,
00:59:07the inducement of the apple
00:59:09that banished her and Adam from heaven?
00:59:13Curiosity?
00:59:15Deceit?
00:59:17Maybe she just wanted a mink coat.
00:59:19Or a change of scenery.
00:59:22A boy.
00:59:23What time you got?
00:59:25Ten o'clock, precisely.
00:59:27Ten o'clock, huh?
00:59:29Buonanotte, Signore.
00:59:31Buonanotte.
00:59:33I suppose I'll see you in the morning, huh?
00:59:35Of course.
00:59:49Listen.

01:00:24Although my family originated from Kentucky.
01:00:27Of course, Day is not an unusual name.
01:00:30And it amuses me to think we might be related.
01:00:33I'm afraid not. I'm from Detroit.
01:00:35I don't think there's a branch of that family in Detroit.
01:00:38But you never can tell, can you?
01:00:40I know.
01:00:41And may I inquire what you are doing in Amalfi, sir?

01:01:06No. He wouldn't tell me.
01:01:09Well, maybe it was some guy in your son's outfit.
01:01:14Perhaps.
01:01:15When the war ended,
01:01:17I came to Italy to be near Bill.
