00:00During the turbulent 60s, we saw the inner cities torn by racial strife like no other
00:10this country has witnessed, the turmoil waged externally and internally.
00:40Black leaders were spanned upon, wild dogs unleashed on living human beings.
01:06Others were assassinated and murdered, and new leaders sprang upon the local and international
01:21scene.
01:47The day he died was Sunday.
01:51My wife and I and the children had been downtown to a breakfast, and on the way back home
01:57we'd stopped at my wife's mother's house in Harlem, and we were sitting around the television
02:02watching, I think, a broadcast of a Russian ballet, and the program was interrupted and
02:08the announcer said that he had been shot.
02:13I went to the Audubon with my 16-year-old son, Billy, and as we even walked into the
02:19ballroom, I felt that people seemed edgy that day.
02:26By the time we got there, I think half the ballroom was filled, but we did get seats
02:31around the 10th or 11th row on the left-hand side, and it happened to be just right across
02:39from the center where that incident of get your hands out of my pocket happened.
02:46We looked at each other and there was not much to say.
02:50We knew him.
02:51The children knew him.
02:52He'd come to our home.
02:54We drove home and left the children with somebody, and then we drove back to Harlem because that's
03:04where he was, and that's where we felt the need to be at that time.
03:09You know, the news of his death just actually split me open in a lot of ways.
03:17I thought that actually that was a declaration of war.
03:19I mean, when I heard that, you know, I remember Leroy McLucas came, he was weeping that Sunday
03:26and told me that Malcolm's been shot.
03:31And to me, and I think a lot of other black intellectuals, to us it was a declaration
03:34of war.
03:35It meant to us that America needed to be destroyed.
03:40You know, I mean, I remember, I felt that it was, you know, a declaration of war, you
03:46know, that, okay, you did this, so you definitely got to be paid back, you know, not only for
03:53all the things I can remember, but for specifically this.
03:56When we got to Harlem, it was sort of still and quiet, somewhat eerie.
04:00We met a lot of people whom we knew.
04:02Everybody walked.
04:03We talked.
04:04We greeted each other.
04:06But there was something subdued about the way we talked.
04:10And up front, while everybody's eyes was fixed on the two men, in the middle, the shotgun
04:16blast went off.
04:19At that time, I mean, there was utter chaos.
04:22People were screaming and hitting the floor.
04:25You could hear all the chairs coming down.
04:28But I saw a brother run up the stage, so I thought, oh, I'll follow him and see if I
04:31could get to Malcolm.
04:32I met him twice, and the last time I met him, we talked a long time, through the night,
04:40with Mohammed Babu and myself.
04:44He was trying to convince me that what we should do is try to politicize those organizations
04:56that we were in.
04:57In other words, Malcolm, I think, had really understood the whole role of the Black United
05:07Front.
05:08When I got to him, he had fallen over backward, but he was flat on his back.
05:14I could see that he was hit many times.
05:16I thought there was only one or two shots, but it seemed like he already had so many
05:23wounds around his chest, one around here and one in his hands.
05:29I hoped that it wasn't serious, but already the way he was breathing or having difficulty
05:36breathing, we knew that it was serious.
05:39And each of us had our own best memory of him.
05:44We felt guilty also that in spite of all the warnings and all the things that we knew were
05:51happening, the circle was closing, the trap was being sprung, somehow we had been unable
05:57to save him.
05:59We felt guilty about that.
06:02And we were a bit apprehensive, too, because we knew that there was an eerie quiet in the
06:08community which might explode every moment.
06:11But that afternoon, as the sun went down and we walked the streets and the lights came
06:17on and everybody looked, we shook hands and we talked and we remembered.
06:23But we knew then that something greatly important to all of us was gone and it wouldn't be back
06:29again.
06:30And the essence of what he said to black people was self-determination, self-respect, self-defense.
07:00♪♪
07:30Can I help you, boys?
07:42Yes, sir.
07:43What room is Mr. O. Sejepho in?
07:47We don't seem to have anyone by the name of O. Sejepho.
07:52Could you check Mr. Redeemer or Mr. Garvey?
07:59I'm sorry.
08:00Are you sure you got the right hotel?
08:02What about Mr. Chabaz or Mr. Little?
08:06Excuse me, gentlemen.
08:07What's your names?
08:08We were only requesting information as to what room a friend might be registered in.
08:13We don't give out that sort of information, comrades.
08:15We?
08:17What is your name, comrade?
08:19Are you sure you boys got the right hotel?
08:22Maybe he's at the Americana.
08:25Paul Robeson's over there.
08:28No, sir.
08:29Perhaps we got here before he arrived.
08:34We're only requesting information, comrade.
08:38We hope to see you again, comrade.
08:43What's this all about, Sammy, calling you comrade?
08:46Are you a commie or something?
08:48No, sir.
08:49No, sir.
08:50We black people call each other all sorts of names these days.

11:11Talk to this brother, comrade.
11:14Brother man, this mission, as you call it,
11:17could change the course of human events.
11:22Some devil president said that.
11:24Ha ha ha ha ha.
11:38I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
12:08I know it's you hypocrite, you are dead hypocrite, you are dead hypocrite, you are dead hypocrite.
12:37I don't want you entering the front door again, I want you to get out the back door.
13:00Come in, gentlemen.
13:01Comrade 1 and Comrade 2, you sit in the first row.
13:06You sit four rows back next to a brother in the green vest.
13:11Now, the brother in the green vest will start a commotion.
13:15The guard will lead the victim.
13:17Comrade 1 and Comrade 2 will move in on the victim.
13:21You move in with the shotgun.
13:25Now, there will be four available cars.
13:28One of these cars will be a taxi,
13:31and one car will drive one block to the nearest subway station.
13:39The wisdom of such a learned one fills me with courage, comrade.
13:44Listen, brothers.
13:46A man is born every day, and a man dies every day.
13:53This man, this hypocrite, is trying to destroy our leader
13:59and our organization with his lies and propaganda.
14:07Yes.
14:08Yes.
14:10Teach, comrade.
14:11Yes, teach.
14:42♪
15:11Would you send the night porter up to my room?
15:14No, no, everything is fine.
15:16417, thank you.
15:33I'm at the Hilton Hotel.
15:34It's 9 o'clock.
15:36You call the guest speakers.
15:37Have them meet at the same place, the usual time.
16:01Brothers and sisters, it is so nice to see so many of you here
16:20on this lovely Sunday afternoon.
16:27The purpose of today's meeting is to discuss
16:32what is going on on the continent of Africa in Angola
16:38and what is going on on the continent of America
16:43with the Afro-Americans.
16:48Now, we know that the CIA is financing
16:52white mercenaries in Angola.
16:56And as long as there are white people going over there
17:02and killing black people,
17:12the press, the press, the press is white.
17:15The press is very dangerous.
17:21The FBI, the CIA, the FBI influences the press
17:37on a national scale.
17:41The CIA influences them on an international scale.
17:46Yes?
17:47I'm at Samuel's property in New York, sir.
17:48I felt that I, like Dan Watts, I was never a supporter of Dr. King.
17:56Come right in, Brother Samuels.
17:57Come right in.
17:59It's good to see you this fine morning.
18:01Come on, have a seat.
18:06God, look at those funny-looking Negroes.
18:09What they talking about?
18:13Same old thing, Brother Samuels.
18:16Same old thing.
18:17They want to share the white man's corruption.
18:20They want to go down the drain with the beasts.
18:24Some of our people are the same way.
18:26They just talk differently.
18:28People I love, and you know this, Brother Samuels,
18:34people I love try to blow me and my family
18:36off the face of this earth,
18:39try to burn me alive.
18:44The last message I got from my source from Detroit
18:46was that they want my tongue mailed to them
18:48by the 26th of February.
18:53They'll try to,
18:57so I have to continue my work.
18:59After all the problems and dirt,
19:02do you still believe?
19:04I'm sure those people wanted to do you harm last night.
19:08Who are those people that want you dead?
19:14I can never be sure.
19:18If it was Africa, I'd know it was the people
19:20who killed Lumumba.
19:22But in this country, I don't know anymore.
19:28But one of my close associates,
19:31my bodyguard, is a CIA man.
19:35I know this in my blood.
19:39I feel it, but yet I can't accuse.
19:44So many people have so much to gain from me dying.
19:49The two men last night recognized me,
19:51and I recognize them, too.
19:56They're just puppets, Brother Samuels.
19:59Just puppets.
20:02But your life is in danger.
20:05I suggest you and your family travel.
20:08See the world.
20:10It's a big place.
20:11All kinds of people.
20:16Why don't you come by and say hello to the family
20:19before breakfast?
20:20I'm off on the man work now.
20:22I can drive you to the ballroom.
20:25No, thank you, Brother Samuels.
20:26I have my car.
20:29Why don't you join me for breakfast?
20:34If you think this is mythical,
20:35I tell you that great movements have always been
20:42murmured by some powerful myth.
20:45Yes.
20:46Excuse me, but aren't you the prophet minister?
21:04Yes, ma'am.
21:06One and the same.
21:08I'm sorry.
21:13Oh, I'm sorry.
21:15Woman, why don't you watch what you're doing?
21:18He'd never give a black woman this kind of job.
21:21See?
21:22See how irresponsible they are?
21:24I'm sorry, please.
21:24I didn't mean anything by it.
21:26It's just that I never expected you to be in a place.
21:33I'm sorry.
21:34Miss, why don't you get the silverware from the other table?
21:38Your boss won't know you dropped this.
21:40Will you bring us some coffee, please?
21:41All right.
21:50Ah, comrade.
21:52You've changed since your trip to Africa.
21:55Don't you ever believe, Brother Samuels,
21:57that I'll change before the American white man does?
22:00But do remember what Omar Khayyam said.
22:04The moving finger writes, and having writ moves on.
22:09All your piety and wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line.
22:14Nor all your tears shall wash out in one word of it.
22:24Pick up my wife and children.
22:25Meet me at the ballroom uptown at about 1.30.
22:28I have to stop by the professor's bookstore
22:29and pick up two books he's holding for me on Garvey.
22:31Yes, sir.
22:32Yes, sir.
22:33Prophet Minister.
22:34Yes, Brother Samuels.
22:35Who is with us working with the DCIA?
22:38That's an interesting question, Brother Samuels.
22:49The people of China grew tired of the oppressors,
22:54and the people rose up against their oppressors.
23:00It was easy to say the odds were against them,
23:04but 11 of them started out,
23:07and today those 11 control 800 million.
23:12They would have been told back then that the odds were against them.
23:18The oppressor always points out to the oppressed,
23:21the odds are against you.
23:26Fidel Castro was up in the mountains of Cuba.
23:30They told him the odds were against him.
23:34Now he's in Havana, and all the powers of this country can't remove him.
23:40Time is on the side of the oppressed.
23:43Truth is on the side of the oppressed.
24:04I'm not talking about infiltrating the power structure.
24:28Back then you were dominated by the police.
24:36When they crucified my lover,
24:48Were you there when they crucified my lover?
25:18Were you there when they crucified my lover?
25:46He's love for all mankind, sir.
25:48Please give this flower to someone you love, sir.
25:51Join us. Move with us.
25:54Rid this world of all hate and violence.
25:58Wear it with love.
26:02Thank you very much.
26:16Hey, how you doing?
26:19It's all there. Took care of it myself.
26:22Didn't rely on the kid.
26:24You know, ain't too old to be loafing around in the park like that all the time.
26:29Well, history always repeats itself, doesn't it?
26:32Yeah. A lot of stuff they did back then, they doing it again.
26:37Well, I'll see you.
26:39All right. Take care.
26:43All right.
27:13All right.
27:43All right.
28:13What you say, fella? Come on in.
28:29Come on.
28:31Oh, my.
28:33Peace, brother.
28:35Hey, now.
28:37How are you feeling this fine morning, professor?
28:39Oh, just fine, just fine.
28:41Cool as I can be.
28:43I got them books for you.
28:45Excellent.
28:47I got them in the back there where I keep the good stuff.
28:49I like good wine.
28:51Come on back here. Come on. Come on.
28:53You want something else?
28:55Good to see you.
28:57Well, sir.
28:59Yeah, I've seen it all.
29:01That was back in 25 when I got to call it.
29:07Yes, sir.
29:09There's white folks dancing all over Harlem around then.
29:13Around the Elks Club around there.
29:15And there's two or three of those theater groups that they had around there.
29:19Yes, sir.
29:21And then this little dude, he came in from Chicago.
29:25And he was looking for something that he said would aid his organization.
29:33I can't remember his name.
29:35For the life of me, I mean, I can't think of what his name is.
29:39Well, anyhow, he said that if I start collecting books about colored people,
29:45you know, they didn't call them black then.
29:47You call them black, man, they want to kill you.
29:49Well, anyhow, if I collected these books about colored people,
29:53he'd be able to transmit it to others.
29:55And he said in 10 years' time with these books,
29:57I'd be smarter than any white man.
30:01That's a real rose?
30:04You heard they want to kill me.
30:06You fellas live so dangerously, comrade.
30:09You know, that other fella, he was in here two or three weeks before he got killed.
30:14You remind me of him so much.
30:17You and him got way so much alike.
30:20That's a real rose?
30:25Why do you think they want to kill me?
30:28I can't believe it's as obvious as I want to open a storefront church.
30:32Some fools may think a single man's important,
30:35because white folks say so.
30:37If white folks say he's important, then he is important.
30:40Then you folks think he's important.
30:42Black folks are jealous as hell.
30:44Why do you think they killed them Kennedy children
30:48and Evers and Martin and them?
30:51Just jealousy and hate, boy.
30:57That's what I'm only imagining.
31:00That's what I'm only a minister.
31:03A minister in a religion most people in this country haven't heard about.
31:07So don't class me with Evers and King and them, please.
31:30You keep these books wrapped up.
31:32It's dangerous if people know you're reading them.
31:34Well, apparently I'm dangerous already.
31:36Well, I guess everybody knows you know what's in those books.
31:40But you got to be careful about letting people know everything you know.
31:45That's what happened to them prophets.
31:49Which prophets are you talking about, Professor?
31:52Jeremiah, Isaiah, Elijah.
31:56I'd better get out of here before you have me swimming in the head.
31:59I'll see you at the ballroom?
32:01Yeah, yeah, I'll be there.
32:03But, you know, like I said to the folks,
32:05like I told all them folks,
32:07that place has got a jinx on it.
32:09Couldn't you all find no other place?
32:11Well, not for $125.
32:14Listen, you try to get there around 2 o'clock.
32:16I'll have some of the brothers save a seat for you.
32:18Okay?
32:20Okay.
32:22You take care of yourself.
32:24Yeah, you do too.
32:26I'll try.
32:52The place is a madhouse, Prophet Minister.
32:54You have visitors from Africa and the Mecca.
32:59Those two.
33:01FBI.
33:03Has Brother Samuel's arrived?
33:05Yes, sir.
33:07He's on his way.
33:09I'll have a word with him.
33:11Yes, sir.
33:13I'll have a word with him.
33:15Yes, sir.
33:17I'll have a word with him.
33:19Yes, sir.
33:21Has Brother Samuel's arrived with my wife and children?
33:23No, sir. No, sir.
33:25Should I call a check?
33:27Yes, sir.
33:29I'll talk to the FBI men first.
33:31Then I will talk to our distinguished guests.
33:35This way, gentlemen.
33:37Sorry to keep you waiting,
33:39but we weren't expecting you.
33:48There's no answer at your house, Prophet Minister.
33:50Yes, sir.
33:58It'll be about 20 minutes.
34:00Was he expecting you?
34:02Yes.
34:04When he was in Ghana three weeks ago,
34:06I told him I would be in America.
34:08We talked last week
34:10when he visited Mecca.
34:12Hello.
34:16He's in conference, Brother.
34:18Maybe 25 minutes.
34:22Sorry to bother you like this,
34:24but we have no choice in the matter.
34:26You guys work on Sunday.
34:28I didn't know that.
34:30What seems to be the problem?
34:32We've been reading a lot about you,
34:34and some of the things you have said
34:36could be considered
34:38well offensive.
34:40Some of the things happening to black people
34:42in this country are offensive.
34:44We don't want to debate with you, sir.
34:46Honestly, we're just trying to do our job.
34:48You talked about historical landmarks
34:50and how they should be destroyed.
34:52Well, some of your people
34:54did exactly that.
34:56The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
34:58The Statue of Liberty
35:00off Staten Island.
35:02Well, human lives, like presidents.
35:06We're doing all we can on that matter.
35:10Was the guy who blew up the Liberty Bell
35:12a friend or a member of your organization?
35:14What guy?
35:16His name was, is...
35:18I give you so many damn names.
35:20I want to be correct.
35:22Smith.
35:24His name is John Smith.
35:26I never heard of him.
35:28Certainly no member of our church
35:30would take part in anything illegal.
35:34But you know that, don't you?
35:36Well, brother,
35:38in one hour you can set up 400 chairs yourself.
35:41Well,
35:43you understand that we have to
35:45follow through on things
35:47even if we don't believe.
35:49You see, well,
35:51since the assassination...
35:53The assassination is history.
35:55You come in here talking about
35:57the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty
35:59and all the time you know
36:01that I would never stoop so low
36:03as to take part in any such act.
36:05Mr. Smith said that you were his leader.
36:07When did he say that?
36:09When we caught him.
36:11Well, an officer questioned him
36:13and he said he was working under your orders.
36:15The man's crazy.
36:17But you do understand
36:19we have to follow every clue.
36:21You know someone is trying to kill me?
36:25I wish you would follow that clue.
36:27There's an FBI man
36:29in my organization.
36:31You know about that?
36:33Why don't you do something about that?
36:35Why don't you do something about that?
36:37Black people are being killed
36:39in this country every day.
36:41Why don't you do something about that?
36:43No, you come in here
36:45telling me something insane
36:47about someone who is obviously crazy.
36:49Maybe we could do something.
36:51Maybe.
36:53I don't want to build up your hopes,
36:55but if you were willing to sign a paper
36:57saying...
36:59I won't sign anything.
37:01Could you help us
37:03by giving us some information
37:05on some of the people?
37:07We have a list of names.
37:09The Bureau is very interested in knowing more about them.
37:11Why don't you ask them?
37:13Because we have reasons to believe
37:15that the same ones that are trying to kill you
37:17are the same people.
37:19But we can't do anything
37:21until they make their move.
37:23Until they kill me, right?
37:27You people know me
37:29well enough to know that I won't give you
37:31any information because I don't have any information.
37:33My life is an open book.
37:35You have people following me everywhere I go
37:37and you know as well as I do who's trying to kill me.
37:39Well, let's look at it this way.
37:41We'd be willing to pay
37:43for any inconvenience
37:45this information might cause you.
37:50You people are as crazy as hell.
37:52You know I can't be bought.
37:54Well, maybe you'd like to have this.
37:58You'd be in your rights to accept it.
38:00We are the FBI
38:02and we have the right to give you this.
38:11I would suggest you leave.
38:14I have a lot of work to do.
38:16I have to prepare for my speech.
38:18I hope you two will join
38:20the other law enforcement agents this afternoon
38:22at the ballroom, two o'clock.
38:24Oh, yeah, we'll be there.
38:26And
38:28since you don't want the gun,
38:32here.
38:34Take this little device.
38:36You spray it
38:38in the perpetrator's face
38:40and he's instantly blind.
38:42And that's going to stop a murderer?
38:44Please, leave my office.
38:49Let me decide
38:51my reason for being.
38:53We can support
38:55your organization.
38:59What you taught us
39:01on your visit to Ghana
39:03is without question
39:05a revelation, brother.
39:09We, too, suspected
39:11that you had been
39:13involved in a murder.
39:17I'm afraid
39:19that's not true.
39:21We, too, suspected
39:23CIA infiltration.
39:25Your visit moved
39:27so many away from Christianity.
39:29To Islam?
39:31No, my friend. To the contrary.
39:33Away from religion altogether.
39:35We believe
39:37that Islam and Allah has brought us
39:39world riches.
39:43Both of you have a means of power.
39:47You, Mr. Ahmed, have a country rich in oil.
39:49Something the white world needs.
39:51So you have power.
39:53You, Mr. Lupito, have a country
39:55rich in natural resources.
39:57So the world needs you.
39:59Both of you have
40:01power, in a manner of speaking.
40:03All the black American
40:05has is the teachings of the white man.
40:07The knowledge
40:09of what he is.
40:11Prophet Minister,
40:13I am here, too, because

40:18population is of darker people.
40:20I welcome this
40:22opportunity to invite
40:24you to Ghana to head
40:26our university.
40:28We invite you to Mecca to learn
40:30the ways of Allah,
40:32to experience the riches.
40:34My country and my president
40:36want you.
40:48No, I'll stay here.
40:52I appreciate your offer.
40:56You can be the imam.
41:02As chairman of the OAU,
41:06I'm speaking for
41:08Gowan,
41:10Mr. Obote,
41:12Mr. Kenyatta,
41:14Mr. Lupito,
41:16Mr. Aguirre,
41:18Mr. Kenyatta,
41:20Mr. Nyerere.
41:22We need you.
41:24Need all you represent.
41:30Will the OAU back me if I bring
41:32formal charges against the United States
41:34and the UN?
41:36Brother Minister, listen to me, please.
41:38Listen very carefully.
41:40Many of us depend
41:42on American aid and American
41:44assistance.
41:46White Americans are all over our country.

45:05He and I understand each other
45:07very well.

56:51He forced us to change our meaning and our frame of reference.
56:56And reminded us that in order to be free, we must first be men.
57:03Even if, like him, we had to die for it.
58:56THE END
