00:00During the turbulent 60s, we saw the inner cities torn by racial strife like no other
00:10this country has witnessed, the turmoil waged externally and internally.
00:40Black leaders were spanned upon, wild dogs unleashed on living human beings.
01:06Others were assassinated and murdered, and new leaders sprang upon the local and international
01:21scene.
01:47The day he died was Sunday.
01:51My wife and I and the children had been downtown to a breakfast, and on the way back home
01:57we'd stopped at my wife's mother's house in Harlem, and we were sitting around the television
02:02watching, I think, a broadcast of a Russian ballet, and the program was interrupted and
02:08the announcer said that he had been shot.
02:13I went to the Audubon with my 16-year-old son, Billy, and as we even walked into the
02:19ballroom, I felt that people seemed edgy that day.
02:26By the time we got there, I think half the ballroom was filled, but we did get seats
02:31around the 10th or 11th row on the left-hand side, and it happened to be just right across
02:39from the center where that incident of get your hands out of my pocket happened.
02:46We looked at each other and there was not much to say.
02:50We knew him.
02:51The children knew him.
02:52He'd come to our home.
02:54We drove home and left the children with somebody, and then we drove back to Harlem because that's
03:04where he was, and that's where we felt the need to be at that time.
03:09You know, the news of his death just actually split me open in a lot of ways.
03:17I thought that actually that was a declaration of war.
03:19I mean, when I heard that, you know, I remember Leroy McLucas came, he was weeping that Sunday
03:26and told me that Malcolm's been shot.
03:31And to me, and I think a lot of other black intellectuals, to us it was a declaration
03:34of war.
03:35It meant to us that America needed to be destroyed.
03:40You know, I mean, I remember, I felt that it was, you know, a declaration of war, you
03:46know, that, okay, you did this, so you definitely got to be paid back, you know, not only for
03:53all the things I can remember, but for specifically this.
03:56When we got to Harlem, it was sort of still and quiet, somewhat eerie.
04:00We met a lot of people whom we knew.
04:02Everybody walked.
04:03We talked.
04:04We greeted each other.
04:06But there was something subdued about the way we talked.
04:10And up front, while everybody's eyes was fixed on the two men, in the middle, the shotgun
04:16blast went off.
04:19At that time, I mean, there was utter chaos.
04:22People were screaming and hitting the floor.
04:25You could hear all the chairs coming down.
04:28But I saw a brother run up the stage, so I thought, oh, I'll follow him and see if I
04:31could get to Malcolm.
04:32I met him twice, and the last time I met him, we talked a long time, through the night,
04:40with Mohammed Babu and myself.
04:44He was trying to convince me that what we should do is try to politicize those organizations
04:56that we were in.
04:57In other words, Malcolm, I think, had really understood the whole role of the Black United
05:07Front.
05:08When I got to him, he had fallen over backward, but he was flat on his back.
05:14I could see that he was hit many times.
05:16I thought there was only one or two shots, but it seemed like he already had so many
05:23wounds around his chest, one around here and one in his hands.
05:29I hoped that it wasn't serious, but already the way he was breathing or having difficulty
05:36breathing, we knew that it was serious.
05:39And each of us had our own best memory of him.
05:44We felt guilty also that, in spite of all the warnings and all the things that we knew
05:51were happening, the circle was closing, the trap was being sprung, somehow we had been
05:56unable to save him.
05:59We felt guilty about that.
06:02We were a bit apprehensive, too, because we knew that there was an eerie quiet in the
06:08community which might explode every moment.
06:11But that afternoon, as the sun went down and we walked the streets and the lights came
06:17on and everybody looked, we shook hands and we talked and we remembered.
06:23But we knew then that something greatly important to all of us was gone and it wouldn't be back
06:29again.
06:37And the essence of what he said to black people was self-determination, self-respect, self-defense.
07:29Can I help you, boys?
07:42Yes, sir.
07:43What room is Mr. O. Sejepho in?
07:47We don't seem to have anyone by the name of O. Sejepho.
07:53Could you check Mr. Redeemer or Mr. Garvey?
07:58I'm sorry.
08:01Are you sure you got the right hotel?
08:03What about Mr. Shabazz or Mr. Little?
08:06Excuse me, gentlemen, what's your names?
08:09We were only requesting information as to what room a friend might be registered.
08:14We don't give out that sort of information, comrades.
08:17We?
08:18What is your name, comrade?
08:20Are you sure you boys got the right hotel?
08:24Maybe he's at the Maracana.
08:25Or Robson's over there.
08:29No, sir.
08:31Perhaps we got here before he arrived.
08:35We're only requesting information, comrade.
08:39We hope to see you again, comrade.
08:55What's this all about, Sammy, calling you a comrade?
08:59Are you a commie or something?
09:01No, sir. No, sir.
09:03We black people call each other all sorts of names these days.
09:06Well, they look like clean-cut young boys.
09:10I don't think they was boys at all.
09:13I think they done lived a long time.
09:25Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:29Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:33Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:37Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:41Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:45Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:50Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:54Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
09:58Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
10:02Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
10:06Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
10:10Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
10:14Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock.
10:19What do you think?
10:23Think we should contact the Detroit brother?
10:27When did he get into town, brother?
10:31Last night. He's staying at the Waldorf.
10:35Did you hear that brainwashed nigger say,
10:39we don't give out information?
10:43Oh, those deaf, dumb, and blind niggas.
10:47It was probably brainwashed by the prophet minister and his heathen teachings.
10:53It only means a slight delay.
10:56You put the alternate plan into effect.
10:59It's a more risky plan, though.
11:01More dangerous.
11:03We have been chosen, comrade.
11:05It is the will of God.
11:09The higher power has ordained this mission.
11:12Talk to this brother, comrade.
11:14Brother man, this mission, as you call it, could change the course of human events.
11:23Some devil president said that.
12:14I know it's you, hypocrite.
12:22You are dead, hypocrite.
12:27You are dead, hypocrite.
12:32You are dead, hypocrite.
12:44He is definitely at the hotel, comrade.
12:59Now listen.
13:01Comrade one and comrade two, you sit in the first row.
13:06You sit four rows back next to a brother in the green vest.
13:11Now the brother in the green vest will start a commotion.
13:15The guard will lead the victim.
13:17Comrade one and comrade two will move in on the victim.
13:22You move in with the shotgun.
13:25Now there will be four available cars.
13:28Now one of these cars will be a taxi.
13:32And one car will drive one block to the nearest subway station.
13:39The wisdom of such a learned one fills me with courage, comrade.
13:44Listen, brothers.
13:46A man is born every day and a man dies every day.
13:53This man, this hypocrite, is trying to destroy our leader and our organization with his lies and propaganda.
14:07Yes, yes.
14:10Teach, comrade.
14:11Yes, teach.
14:51Now would you send the night porter up to my room?
15:14No, no, everything is fine.
15:16417.
15:33I'm at the Hilton Hotel.
15:34It's nine o'clock.
15:36You call the guest speakers, have them meet at the same place, the usual time.
16:02Brothers and sisters, it is so nice to see so many of you here on this lovely Sunday afternoon.
16:27The purpose of today's meeting is to discuss what is going on on the continent of Africa in Angola
16:38and what is going on on the continent of America with the Afro-Americans.
16:48Now we know that the CIA is financing white mercenaries in Angola.
16:56And as long as there are white people going over there and killing black people,
17:12the press is white.
17:15The press is very dangerous.
17:21FBI, CIA.
17:34FBI influences the press on a national scale.
17:41CIA influences them on an international scale.
17:46Yes?
17:47I had Samuel's property in the store, so I felt that I, like Dan Watts, I was never a supporter of Dr. King.
17:56Come right in, Brother Samuels.
17:57Come right in.
17:59It's good to see you this fine morning.
18:01Come on, have a seat.
18:06God, look at those funny looking Negroes.
18:09What they talking about?
18:13Same old thing, Brother Samuels.
18:16Same old thing.
18:17They want to share the white man's corruption.
18:20They want to go down the drain with the beasts.
18:24Some of our people are the same way.
18:26They just talk differently.
18:28People I love, and you know this, Brother Samuels,
18:33people I love tried to blow me and my family off the face of this earth.
18:39Tried to burn me alive.
18:44The last message I got from my source from Detroit was that they want my tongue mailed to them by the 26th of February.
18:53They'll try to.
18:57So I have to continue my work.
18:59After all the problems and dirt, do you still believe?
19:04I'm sure those people wanted to do you harm last night.
19:08Who are those people that want you dead?
19:14I can never be sure.
19:18If it was Africa, I'd know it was the people who killed Lumumba.
19:22But in this country, I don't know anymore.
19:28But one of my close associates, my bodyguard, is a CIA man.
19:35I know this in my blood.
19:39I feel it, but yet I can't accuse.
19:44So many people have so much to gain from me dying.
19:49The two men last night recognized me, and I recognized them too.
19:56They're just puppets, Brother Samuels.
19:59Just puppets.
20:02But your life is in danger.
20:05I suggest you and your family travel.
20:08See the world.
20:10It's a big place.
20:11All kinds of people.
20:17Why don't you come by and say hello to the family before breakfast?
20:20I'm off on the man work now.
20:22I can drive you to the ballroom.
20:25No, thank you, Brother Samuels.
20:26I have my car.
20:29Why don't you join me for breakfast?
20:34If you think this is mythical, I tell you that great movements have always been murmured by some powerful myth.
21:00Excuse me, but aren't you the prophet minister?
21:06Yes, ma'am.
21:07One and the same.
21:11I'm sorry.
21:12I'm sorry.
21:14Oh, I'm sorry.
21:15Woman, why don't you watch what you're doing?
21:18You'd never give a black woman this kind of job.
21:21See?
21:22See how irresponsible they are?
21:24I'm sorry.
21:25Please, I didn't mean anything by it.
21:27It's just that I never expected you to be in a place.
21:33I'm sorry.
21:34Miss, why don't you get the silverware from the other table?
21:38Your boss won't know you dropped this.
21:40And bring us some coffee, please.
21:42All right.
21:51Comrade, you've changed since your trip to Africa.
21:55Don't you ever believe, Brother Samuels, that I'll change before the American white man does?
22:00But do remember what Omar Khayyam said.
22:04The moving finger writes, and having written, moves on.
22:09Nor all your piety and wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out in one word of it.
22:24Pick up my wife and children.
22:25Meet me at the ballroom uptown at about 1.30.
22:28I have to stop by the professor's bookstore and pick up two books he's holding for me on Garvey.
22:32Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
22:33Prophet Minister.
22:34Yes, Brother Samuels.
22:35Who is with us working with the DCIA?
22:38An interesting question, Brother Samuels.
22:49The people of China grew tired of the oppressors, and the people rose up against their oppressors.
23:00It was easy to say the odds were against them.
23:04But 11 of them started out, and today those 11 control 800 million.
23:12They would have been told back then that the odds were against them.
23:18The oppressor always points out to the oppressed, the odds are against you.
23:25Fidel Castro was up in the mountains of Cuba.
23:29They told him the odds were against him.
23:34Now he's in Havana, and all the powers of this country can't remove him.
23:39Time is on the side of the oppressed.
23:42Truth is on the side of the oppressed.
24:12We're talking about creating the power structure.
24:28Again, you are dominated by the powers.
24:30When they crucified my lover, were you there?
24:51When they crucified my lover.
25:21When they crucified my lover.
25:49Peace, love for all mankind, sir.
25:51Please give this flower to someone you love, sir.
25:54Join us, move with us.
25:57Rid this world of all hate and violence.
26:01Wear it with love.
26:05Thank you very much.
26:20Hi.
26:21How you doing?
26:22Fine.
26:23It's all there.
26:24Took care of myself.
26:25Didn't rely on the kid.
26:27You know, ain't too old to be loafing around in the park like that all the time.
26:32Well, history always repeats itself, doesn't it?
26:35Yeah.
26:36A lot of stuff they did back then, they doing it again.
26:40Well, I'll see you.
26:42All right.

33:19I'll talk to the FBI men first, then I'll talk to our distinguished guests.
33:25This way, gentlemen. Sorry to keep you waiting, but we weren't expecting you.
33:36There's no need to be so formal, sir.
33:38I'm just here to see if I can get a copy of the report.
33:41I'm afraid I can't, sir.
33:44There's no answer at your house, Professor.
33:53It'll be about 20 minutes.
33:55Was he expecting you?
33:57Yes, when he was in Ghana three weeks ago.
34:01I told him I would be in America.
34:04We talked last week when he visited Mecca.
34:09We talked last week when he visited Mecca.
34:13Hello.
34:16He's in conference, brother.
34:19Maybe 25 minutes.
34:23Sorry to bother you like this, but we have no choice in the matter.
34:27You got work on Sunday. I didn't know that.
34:31What seems to be the problem?
34:33We've been reading a lot about you.
34:35And some of the things you have said could be considered...
34:39well, offensive.
34:41Some of the things happening to black people in this country are offensive.
34:45We don't want to debate with you, sir. Honestly, we're just trying to do our job.
34:49You talked about historical landmarks and how they should be destroyed.
34:53Well, some of your people did exactly that.
34:57The Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
34:59The Statue of Liberty off Staten Island.
35:03Well, human lives, like presidents.
35:07We're doing all we can on that matter.
35:10Was the guy who blew up the Liberty Bell a friend or a member of your organization?
35:15What guy?
35:17His name was...
35:20I give you so many names. I want to be correct.
35:23Smith.
35:25His name is John Smith.
35:28I never heard of him.
35:30Certainly no member of our church would take part in anything illegal.
35:35But you know that, don't you?
35:37But brother, in one hour you can set up 400 chairs yourself.
35:44Well, you understand that we have to follow through on things.
35:50Even if we don't believe.
35:52You see, well, since the assassination...
35:55The assassination is history.
35:58You come in here talking about the Liberty Bell and the Statue of Liberty.
36:02And all the time you know that I would never stoop so low as to take part in any such act.
36:07Mr. Smith said that you were his leader.
36:10When did he say that?
36:11When we caught him.
36:13Well, an officer questioned him and he said he was working under your orders.
36:17The man's crazy.
36:19But you do understand.
36:21We have to follow every clue.
36:24You know someone is trying to kill me?
36:28I wish you would follow that clue.
36:31There's an FBI man in my organization.
36:33You know about that?
36:36Why don't you do something about that?
36:39Black people are being killed in this country every day.
36:42Why don't you do something about that?
36:44No, you come in here telling me something insane about someone who is obviously crazy.
36:50Maybe we could do something. Maybe.
36:54I don't want to build up your hopes, but if you were willing to sign a paper saying...
36:57I won't sign anything.
37:01Could you help us by giving us some information on some of the people?
37:07We have a list of names the Bureau is very interested in knowing more about.
37:11Why don't you ask them?
37:12Because we have reasons to believe that the same ones that are trying to kill you are the same people.
37:19But we can't do anything until they make their move, until they...
37:23Until they kill me, right?
37:28You people know me well enough to know that I won't give you any information because I don't have any information.
37:33My life is an open book.
37:35You have people following me everywhere I go and you know as well as I do who's trying to kill me.
37:40Well, let's look at it this way.
37:42We'd be willing to pay for any inconvenience this information might cause you.
37:50You people are as crazy as hell.
37:52You know I can't be bought.
37:55Well, maybe you'd like to have this.
37:58You'd be in your rights to accept it.
38:01We are the FBI and we have the right to give you this.
38:12I would suggest you leave.
38:15I have a lot of work to do.
38:17I have to prepare for my speech.
38:20I hope you two will join the other law enforcement agents this afternoon at the ballroom at 2 o'clock.
38:25Oh yeah, we'll be there.
38:29And since you don't want the gun...
38:34Here.
38:36Take this little device.
38:39You spray it in the perpetrator's face and he's instantly blind.
38:44And that's going to stop a murderer?
38:47Please, leave my office.
38:52Let me decide my reason for being.
39:08We can support your organization.
39:11What you taught us on your visit to Ghana is without question a revelation, brother.
39:20We too suspected CIA infiltration.
39:24Your visit moved so many away from Christianity.
39:28To Islam?
39:29No, my friend, to the contrary, away from religion altogether.
39:33We believe that Islam and Allah has brought us world riches.
39:39Both of you have a means of power.
39:43Now you, Mr. Ahmed, have a country rich in oil.
39:46Something the white world needs, so you have power.
39:50You, Mr. Lupito, have a country rich in natural resources.
39:54So the world needs you.
39:57Both of you have power in a manner of speaking.
40:00Both of you have power in a manner of speaking.
40:04All the black American has is the teachings of the white man.
40:09The knowledge of what he is.
40:12Prophet Minister, I am here too because I believe the majority of the world's population is of darker people.
40:20I welcome this opportunity to invite you to Ghana to head our university.
40:27We invite you to Mecca to learn the ways of Allah, to experience the riches.
40:34My country and my president want you.
40:53No, I'll stay here.
40:56I appreciate your offer. Thank you.
41:01You can be the imam.
41:06As chairman of the OAU, I'm speaking for Goan.
41:15Mr. Obute, Mr. Kenyatta, Mr. Nyerere, we need you.
41:22Need all you represent.
41:29Will the OAU back me if I bring formal charges against the United States and the UN?
41:35Brother Minister, listen to me please.
41:38Listen very carefully.
41:40Many of us depend on American aid and American investments.
41:45White Americans are all over our country.
41:48They are everywhere.
41:51Do you understand me?
42:22One, two, three.
42:26One, two, three.
42:30One, two, three.
42:33One, two, three.
42:37One, two, three.
42:40One, two, three.
42:44Ready?
42:52How are you?
42:55How do you like your fitness?
42:57I've been training very hard.
42:59The fitness is superb.
43:01Can I check your stomach muscles?
43:03Sure.
43:12Very good.
43:14The home office will be pleased.
43:16I've been ready for three weeks.
43:18Can we get out of here?
43:20Easy, comrade.
43:22It's only one o'clock. We've got time.
43:27Please excuse us.
43:38Brothers, you are acting like deaf, dumb, and blind Negroes.
43:43Time is upon us.
43:45And I know you're frightened.
43:49But there is no shame in that.
43:53Today is the day.
43:55We're ready.
43:58Our phone was disconnected.
44:00I think the wire was cut.
44:03Yes, he's with me right here.
44:06I'm fine.
44:08The children are fine, too.
44:10Are you all right?
44:11Yes, I'm fine.
44:14Look, don't come here.
44:17Have Brother Samuels take you directly to the ballroom.
44:21I'll get there by two o'clock.
44:23Yes.
44:26Yes.
44:29Okay, bye-bye.
44:42Sir, it's almost time to leave for the Autobahn ballroom.
44:45Brother Stephen is taking our guest downtown.
44:47He'll meet you at the hall.
44:49Okay.
44:50Comrade, I want to thank you for all you've done for me and for the organization.
44:54Why do they hate you so, sir?
45:00I think I must have hurt someone very badly.
45:06He and I understand each other very well.
45:11He looks on me as his son, but...
45:15I made the mistake of growing up.
45:19You must always remember this.
45:22You are your own man.
45:25As you grow older, read everything.
45:29But only believe what you can see and feel.
45:35What you did was not wrong.
45:38Your father reacted because he loves you.
45:41Respect that.
45:46I hate him.
45:49I wish you were my father.
45:51I really do, Mr. Minister.
45:55And one day...
45:58One day I will be head of this organization.
46:01And I will always honor you, sir.
46:05You're so young.
46:06But I do understand the book, sir.
46:09And I understand your teachings.
46:11And I will teach as you are teaching.
46:42Brothers and sisters.
46:44I am happy to see so many of you on this beautiful Sunday afternoon.
46:50The purpose of this meeting is to...
46:53propose a platform for the survival of...
46:57black people in America.
47:00This survival depends on the survival of the black man...
47:04in Africa.
47:09I am...
47:11the owner's personal friend, partner and business associate...
47:15and advisor...
47:17Chief Alex Agyei.
47:27You can hear me all the time. I know you want to hear them.
47:31And so I'm going to turn the microphone over to my brother.

52:16You better get somebody out there immediately.
52:18Maybe we can station across the street or something.

52:43I'm sorry, minister.
52:45They all called.
52:46They can't make it.

56:35They killed my husband.
56:39He was our hope, our youth,
56:43our blackness and our promise.
56:46His words were what we thought but seldom dared to say.
56:51He forced us to change our meaning and our frame of reference
56:57and reminded us that in order to be free, we must first be men,
57:03even if, like him, we had to die for it.
58:42THE END
