Governors of the Southern part of the country under the aegis of the Southern Governors Forum, SGF, have given their nod to the contentious Value Added Tax collection, saying it is within the jurisdiction of states to collect VATS.
The Governors took the position after rising from its meeting in Enugu on Thursday.
In a communiqué read on behalf of the Forum by Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, the Forum expressed satisfaction with the rate at which states in the Southern part of the country are enacting anti-open grazing laws which it said aligns with the uniform template and as aspirations of the Forum.
The Forum encouraged states that have not yet enacted the law in their various states to do so.
According to the communiqué, the meeting also agreed to encourage full operationalisation of its already agreed regional security outfit that will help share intelligence and collaborate to ensure the security and safety of the region.
The Forum also emphasized the need for southern states to leverage on the legislative competence of their respective State Houses of Assembly as well as representation in the National Assembly to pursue inclusion of fiscal federalism in the Nigerian Constitution.
The Southern also agreed that come 2023, the President of the Country must come from the South, to promote equity, justice and fairness.
It however scheduled its next meeting in November for Delta state.
