00:00Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to see is true.
00:10The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
00:31This is the city.
00:35Los Angeles, California.
00:38I work here.
00:44It was Tuesday, June 12th.
00:45It was hot in Los Angeles.
00:47We were working the day watch out of auto theft division.
00:49My partner's Frank Smith.
00:50The boss is Captain Nelson.
00:52My name's Friday.
00:54The recovery rate of stolen automobiles had dropped far below normal.
00:58Evidence pointed to an organized gang of car thieves.
01:01We had to break it up.
01:02Yeah?
01:03Who is it?
01:04Joe Friday.
01:05You alone, Joe?
01:06Just my partner.
01:07Anybody else?
01:08No.
01:09Just us.
01:10Get in, quick!
01:11Can't be too careful.
01:12Why?
01:13What's the matter?
01:14The landlady.
01:15Oh?
01:16Yeah.
01:17She saw me doing the washing.
01:18She said she'd throw me out of here if she saw me doing the washing.
01:19Oh, I see.
01:20Well, that's good.
01:21Well, I'll see you later, Joe.
01:22See you later, Joe.
01:23See you later, Joe.
01:24See you later, Joe.
01:25See you later, Joe.
01:26See you later, Joe.
01:27See you later, Joe.
01:28See you later, Joe.
01:29See you later, Joe.
01:30She said she'd throw me out of here if she ever caught me at it again.
01:32Oh.
01:33You know, a high class apartment would have an automatic washer, but not this old bat.
01:37Sure.
01:38It's going out pretty good.
01:40You want to see me about something, Joe?
01:42Yeah, just a couple of questions.
01:44I'm not in the fire, am I?
01:46Not with us.
01:47You still working at the garage?
01:49Night shift.
01:50I'm checking at four.
01:52This got something to do with my job?
01:54Oh, we figured maybe you could give us a hand.
01:56That's a switch.
01:58What are you looking for?
01:59A lot of cars going someplace lately.
02:00We're trying to find out where and who's driving them.
02:03Thought maybe you might have heard a rumble.
02:05You got anything?
02:06Wouldn't do any good if it goes outside.
02:08Well, we won't open the door.
02:10There's supposed to be three people in on it.
02:12What do you know about them?
02:13Two men and a woman.
02:15They say the two fellas are heavy.
02:17Any names?
02:18Nope.
02:19They're playing it close to the chest.
02:20Even the rumble's not solid.
02:22Uh-huh.
02:23Couple of days ago, I talked to a guy down at the garage.
02:26He was telling me about the operation, said it was big.
02:28Does he know the people?
02:29Well enough that he tried to get a piece of the action, but they're not cutting it up.
02:33Can we talk to this guy?
02:34I can't stop you, but I can't give you a hand either.
02:37What do you mean?
02:38Can't tell you where to find him.
02:40Does he come around the garage much?
02:42Once in a while.
02:43Nothing regular.
02:44What's he do for a living?
02:46Drives.
02:47Oh.
02:48Stock car races.
02:50Does he got a name?
02:51Everybody calls him Tops.
02:53That's all I know about him.
02:54Did he give you any details on the operation?
02:56I didn't ask for him.
02:57I figure the less I know about deals like this, the less trouble I'll get into.
03:01Yeah.
03:02Any word on what they're doing with the cars?
03:04I didn't hear none.
03:05They turn it up?
03:06No, not where we can find them.
03:08Score them pretty good, huh?
03:09Too good.
03:11What's the pattern?
03:12Well, the cars are taken in the early morning hours from in front of the owners' houses.
03:16Jumper wires?
03:17Probably.
03:18All late models.
03:19They don't touch anything that isn't fully equipped.
03:21Any special make?
03:22No.
03:23As long as the car has a radio and a heater, white sidewalls, they want it.
03:26I wonder where they're getting rid of them.
03:28You tell us.
03:29Out of the country, maybe.
03:31No, that doesn't figure, Whitey.
03:32We've had the border checked.
03:33San Diego's working on that.
03:35Two of the jobs we had the broadcast out within a half hour after the car was taken couldn't turn anything.
03:39They just seemed to disappear.
03:40They must have a big parking lot.
03:42You said the two men were heavy, huh?
03:44That's right.
03:45How'd you come up with that?
03:47The guy who told me the story.
03:48This fellow Tops?
03:49Yeah.
03:50When he asked for a piece of the action, the roof fell in.
03:53What do you mean?
03:54It was real rough, so there wasn't going to be any split.
03:57Mm-hmm.
03:58So Tops, the gun, said if anything about the operation got out, he'd use it.
04:01Did you get a description of these men?
04:03No.
04:04Does Tops tell you where they hang out?
04:06Uh-uh.
04:07Okay, Whitey.
04:08If you hear from him again, let us know, will you?
04:09Sure.
04:10Call you at the office?
04:11If you would.
04:12Wish I could give you more.
04:14I'll nose around, see what I can pick up.
04:16We'll appreciate that.
04:17Might have something for you the next couple of days.
04:20Well, if you do, it'll put you way ahead.
04:22Huh?
04:23It's been about two weeks now.
04:24We got nothing.
04:36The first theft had occurred on Saturday, May 26th.
04:39Since then, 24 more automobiles have been stolen.
04:42In each theft, the same M.O. occurred.
04:46Possible outlets for stolen cars have been kept under 24-hour surveillance.
04:51The stats office had made runs on each theft and the general M.O.
04:55When the list was returned to us and checked, we were no closer to the suspects.
05:01Frank and I ran the name and the description of the man known as Tops through the moniker file.
05:05There was no record on such a person.
05:09Two more days passed.
05:11Another car was stolen.
05:12People in the vicinity were questioned without result.
05:17Saturday, June 16th.
05:20PHONE RINGS
05:23Auto theft, Smith.
05:24Yeah.
05:26Oh, yeah.
05:28Can you hold him there?
05:31We'll be right out.
05:32Yeah, thanks.
05:33Joe.
05:36Whitey just called from the garage.
05:37What about him?
05:38Tops. He just walked in.
05:42Frank and I left the police building and drove over to where Wilbur Evanston was employed.
05:46Whitey had told Frank on the phone that we could find Tops in the office at the rear of the garage.
05:55Your name Tops?
05:56Yeah, that's right.
05:57Police officers.
05:58What's this all about?
05:59Just want to talk to you, that's all.
06:00Well, I ain't done nothing. No reason to rouse me around.
06:02You're not being roused.
06:03What's your real name?
06:04Roger Grayson.
06:05What do you do for a living?
06:06When I can get a car, I race.
06:08Stock cars?
06:09Yeah.
06:10Where?
06:11Around. Different tracks.
06:12You live here in L.A.?
06:13Some of the time.
06:14What do you do when you're not racing?
06:15I make a buck here and there.
06:16How?
06:17Different jobs. You know, whatever I can pick up.
06:20You working now?
06:21No.
06:22I've got to go back east next week.
06:24Think I can line something up.
06:27Maybe you've got a lot of time to kill, but I haven't.
06:29Why don't you tell me what this is all about so I can get out of here?
06:32You ever been arrested?
06:33Huh?
06:34You heard what I said. Have you ever been in jail?
06:36Yeah.
06:37What charge?
06:38They didn't make it stick.
06:40What was it?
06:41Grand theft.
06:43Auto or money?
06:44Auto.
06:45Did you do any time?
06:46I told you. They didn't make it stick.
06:48Where'd all this happen?
06:50Idaho.
06:51Was that your only arrest?
06:52A couple of times for a bag.
06:54Did they hold you?
06:55No. Gave me a floater.
06:57Huh.
07:00Come on. You guys are after something. What is it?
07:02Do you know anything about some car thefts around town lately?
07:05You'll have to look someplace else.
07:07Let's go downtown. Might be easier to talk there.
07:11All right. What do you guys want to know?
07:13Whatever you can tell us.
07:15Okay.
07:17I was in this bowling alley one night.
07:19Two fellas came in. Had this gal with them.
07:21Fellas were both kind of gassed.
07:23Uh-huh.
07:24Sat down next to me. We were just watching the games.
07:27They started talking.
07:28I heard one of them mention something about cars.
07:31Yeah.
07:32My ears stood up.
07:33It's like saying something about a new camera around a photographer.
07:36Soon as I hear the word cars, I start to listen.
07:39Uh-huh.
07:40They were having a beef.
07:42One of them said something about unloading right away.
07:44The other guy said they should wait for a while.
07:46Dump them all at once.
07:47Yeah.
07:48Well, I stood there and argued for a while.
07:50Then one of them seen I was listening.
07:52He leaned over and said something to the other guy.
07:54Next thing I knew, I was surrounded.
07:56One on each side, leaning on me.
07:58Uh-huh.
07:59I didn't want any trouble.
08:00I could see these two guys had a pocket full of it.
08:03I went along with them.
08:04What happened?
08:05They asked me if I liked what I heard.
08:07What'd you say?
08:08I told them I didn't hear anything.
08:10Said I had very bad ears.
08:11Yeah.
08:12They didn't believe it.
08:13Tried to push me around.
08:15Manager came over and they moved away.
08:17What happened then?
08:18Came back.
08:19Told me if I said anything, they'd get me.
08:21One of them had a gun.
08:22He kind of pulled his coat back.
08:23I could see it in his belt.
08:24Uh-huh.
08:25Did you try and cut yourself in on the deal?
08:27No.
08:28We heard you did.
08:29Not true.
08:30I told Whitey that, but it never happened.
08:32Why'd you tell him it did?
08:34Trying to be a big man, I guess.
08:36Are these two fellas, they hang around this bowling alley all the time?
08:39First time I ever saw them there.
08:41Where is it?
08:42Uh, Hollywood Boulevard near Rossmore.
08:44You said something about a woman.
08:46Yeah.
08:47You sure she was with them?
08:48She came in with them.
08:49Left with them.
08:50They have a car?
08:51Who knows?
08:52When they shoved off, I stayed where I was.
08:54Figured maybe they were waiting for me.
08:56Didn't leave the place until just before two.
08:58All right, Grayson.
08:59We'd like you to come downtown and look at some mud books, if you would.
09:02What's the matter?
09:03You'd know them if you saw them again, wouldn't you?
09:05Yeah, I'd know them.
09:06That's not the problem.
09:07What is?
09:08Well, they'd know me.
09:25We took Roger Grayson down to the police building and had him check mud books.
09:28He was unable to identify the suspects.
09:31We ran his name through the record section
09:33and found that he'd had no arrests in the state of California.
09:35He was released.
09:39Local broadcasts and APBs were put out
09:41carrying the description of the suspects which Grayson had given us.
09:46Another week passed without result.
09:48Monday, June 25th, 2.31 p.m.
09:51Where do you live?
09:53Well, you should report to the Hollywood station.
09:56That's on Wilcox between Sunset and San Luis.
09:59Between Sunset and Santa Monica.
10:021358 North Wilcox.
10:04They'll be glad to take your report.
10:06Okay, thanks.
10:09What was that all about?
10:10Stolen bicycle.
10:11Kid left it in front of his house, came back, it was gone.
10:13Yeah.
10:15Yes, sir.
10:16I'd like to talk to someone about a car.
10:18Come right in.
10:21Care to sit down?
10:22Yes, sir.
10:23Right here.
10:25This is Frank Smith, my name's Friday.
10:27How do you do?
10:28I'm Joel Pennant.
10:30All right, Mr. Pennant, what can we do for you?
10:32I think I bought a stolen car.
10:44Why do you think the car was stolen?
10:46Well, there's something funny about it, the whole thing.
10:48Where's the car now, sir?
10:49Outside, down the other street.
10:50Would you happen to have the license number?
10:52Yes.
10:53Do you want it?
10:54Oh, we'd like to check it out, yes, sir.
10:56Yes, I got all the information.
10:57Pink slip and...
10:58Here it is, here.
10:59Yes.
11:01Thank you, sir.
11:02I'll run the make on it.
11:03Okay.
11:04I hate to put you to so much trouble.
11:05That's perfectly all right, sir, it's our job.
11:07Sure made me feel silly if I was wrong about this.
11:10How'd you happen to buy the car?
11:12Well, I own a little place out in the valley,
11:14sort of restaurant and cabins for tourists.
11:16I see.
11:17It's quite a ways out.
11:19We don't do too much business, but it's a living,
11:21and we work pretty hard.
11:22Yes, sir.
11:23And this fella came in the day before yesterday.
11:26It was Saturday.
11:27And he sat down, had something to eat,
11:29and we started talking.
11:30Nothing important.
11:31Uh-huh.
11:32He said he was on his way back east looking for work.
11:35He had a lot of trouble, lost his job and all.
11:38Yeah.
11:39Well, he had this new car parked outside,
11:41and he wanted to know if I knew someone
11:43who would take it off his hands at a bargain.
11:45Uh-huh.
11:46He said he just bought it a couple of weeks ago
11:48and paid cash for it and owned it outright.
11:50And he felt kind of badly about having to take such a loss on it,
11:53but he didn't have dough enough to buy gas for it.
11:55I see.
11:56Well, I asked him how much he wanted for it,
11:58and he quoted me a price $200 on the wholesale.
12:00Well, that looked like a pretty good deal to me,
12:02so I took him up on it.
12:04Just like that?
12:05No, sir.
12:06I was careful, but maybe I wasn't careful enough.
12:08A lot of other fellas come in and try to sell me things,
12:10and I learned the hard way.
12:12So I asked him if he had any proof to show me
12:14that he really owned the car.
12:16Did he have any proof?
12:17Yes.
12:18He showed me the pink slip and told me where he bought the car.
12:21Brompton Auto Service, out in Hollywood.
12:23Did you contact them?
12:25Yes, I put a call through right away.
12:27What'd they say?
12:28Well, I talked to a couple of secretaries
12:30before I got the sales manager.
12:32He checked his records
12:33and told me the car had been purchased there.
12:35He even gave me the man's name who bought it.
12:37Uh-huh.
12:38It seemed like the guy was a square shooter.
12:40Pink slip, where he bought the car.
12:42Everything looked on the up and up.
12:44Yes, sir.
12:45So I turned the check over to him,
12:46and he gave me the car right away.
12:48I asked him if I could give him a lift someplace,
12:50and he said no, he was gonna hitch a ride.
12:52And that he would cash the check Monday.
12:53That would be today.
12:54Yeah.
12:55So I went down to the bank to make a deposit
12:57before the check cleared.
12:58Yeah.
12:59It already had, the check.
13:01The bank told me it was cash the minute they opened the doors.
13:04And that got me worried,
13:05him being so anxious to get the money right away.
13:08How about it?
13:10It's stolen, all right.
13:11I had a feeling.
13:12I checked the reports in the M.O.
13:14Yeah.
13:15Sounds like the gang we're after.
13:19While the victim, Joel Pennett,
13:20looked through the mug books,
13:21Frank and I picked up the check the suspect had cashed.
13:24The name on the pink slip,
13:25Ralph Prescott,
13:26had been run through R&I.
13:27They had nothing on him.
13:29The check was sent to Larry Sloan
13:30and handwriting for analysis.
13:32There was no question that the pink slip was a phony.
13:37We checked the phone book
13:38for a listing on the Brompton Auto Service,
13:40but we found none.
13:41The victim had made a note of the phone number,
13:43and from it we were able to obtain the address
13:45where the telephone had been installed.
13:49It was a large office building on 7th Street.
13:51Frank and I talked to the superintendent,
13:53Mr. Tad J. Whitney.
13:55Al, this is where they were.
13:56Uh-huh.
13:57When did they move out, do you know?
13:58Sometime over the weekend.
14:00I'm not sure of the day.
14:01I'm off Saturday and Sunday.
14:02I see.
14:03How long did they have the office?
14:05A couple of weeks.
14:06Said they wanted it for a month
14:07and paid it in advance.
14:08Told me if things worked out,
14:09they'd take a lease.
14:10Yes, sir.
14:11Guess things didn't work out.
14:13Did they leave any forwarding address?
14:15No, not as far as I know.
14:16What can you tell us about them?
14:18Well, I talked to them a couple of times.
14:19They seemed nice enough.
14:20What kind of business were they in, did they say?
14:22Well, not in so many words.
14:24He said they were testing a new product
14:26and all their business would be on the phone.
14:28Did they pay for the office by check or cash?
14:30Cash.
14:31Did they use a name of any kind?
14:33I don't think I understand you.
14:34Well, did they call each other by name?
14:36Yeah, when they were looking the place over.
14:38Do you remember what names they used?
14:40Let me think a minute.
14:42Well, the way it comes to me now,
14:43one was called Wesley and the other was Ralph.
14:46No last names, though.
14:47No, I didn't hear them.
14:48What about the woman?
14:49Lerner.
14:50I remember that when they introduced her.
14:51Nikki Lerner.
14:52You haven't cleaned the office since they left?
14:54Well, no, we haven't gotten around to it yet.
14:56All right, fine.
14:57We'd like to have some men go over the place.
14:59Sure, I'll be glad to help any way I can.
15:01All right.
15:02Can you come downtown and look at some pictures for us?
15:04Of criminals?
15:05Well, of the possible suspects, yes.
15:07You mean to try to pick them out, huh?
15:09That's the idea.
15:10Will it take long?
15:11What I'm getting at is I don't have a car
15:14and I usually take a bus home
15:15and the buses don't run very often late in the evening.
15:17Well, we'll see that you get home, Mr. Whitney.
15:19Oh, no, I wouldn't want to put you to that trouble.
15:21It's pretty far out.
15:22No trouble at all?
15:23No, I'd rather you take me where I can get a bus.
15:25Whatever you say.
15:27Otherwise, I don't know what Emma would think.
15:29Might scare her half to death.
15:31How's that?
15:32If I was to come home in a police car.
15:40We took the superintendent down to the police building,
15:44but he was unable to identify the suspects.
15:46The crime lab crew went over the office,
15:48but they failed to find any physical evidence.
15:50Another week passed.
15:52During that time, we had reports
15:55that four of the stolen cars had been sold.
15:58The circumstances in each case were the same.
16:00In each instance, we checked out the address
16:02the suspects had used as a front, but without result.
16:06Tuesday, July 3rd.
16:16What are you doing tomorrow?
16:17What?
16:18Fourth of July.
16:19Oh, that's right.
16:20We're having a picnic as soon as I get home from work.
16:22Well, it'll be a little late to start out, won't it?
16:24We're not going anyplace.
16:25I thought you said you were having a picnic.
16:27We eat in the backyard.
16:28Oh.
16:29Every year since I can remember, we've had a Fourth of July picnic.
16:33As soon as it gets dark, we shoot off fireworks.
16:35Fountains and sparklers and stuff.
16:37You and I'll set them off.
16:38Oh, that'll be nice.
16:39Safer for the kids that way.
16:43Auto theft Friday.
16:46Yeah?
16:47Uh-huh.
16:50Oh, you did?
16:52Sure.
16:53Yeah, it'd be worth checking anyway.
16:56You'll bring them over here?
16:58Okay, fine.
17:00Yeah, thanks a lot.
17:02Mott over in forgery.
17:03They just picked up a printer.
17:04He's been cashing a lot of phony checks.
17:06Yeah.
17:07They checked his plant.
17:08Yeah.
17:09Found a stack of phony pink slips.
17:15Sergeant Hal Mott brought the suspect in.
17:17He told us that the man's name was Harry Larwell
17:19and that he'd been arrested on suspicion of forgery.
17:21When Mott and his partner searched the man's home,
17:24they'd found a printing press,
17:25which the suspect had used for printing fraudulent checks.
17:29Frank and I took the suspect to an interrogation room.
17:32Under questioning, he admitted the check forgeries,
17:34but he denied any knowledge of the automobile registration slips.
17:37You printed them, didn't you, Larwell?
17:39Well...
17:41Well, did you or didn't you?
17:43I guess so.
17:44Don't you know?
17:45Yeah, I printed them.
17:47Who for?
17:48Nobody.
17:49Well, come off it, Larwell.
17:51Honest, I just did it for kicks, for practice.
17:53Uh-huh.
17:54You think that story will hold up in court?
17:56Well, that's the truth.
17:57Sure it is.
17:58Look, I copped out to the forgery rep.
18:00What more do you want?
18:01We want to know about those pink slips.
18:02I told you I was just working out.
18:04For practice.
18:05That's right.
18:07How many forgery counts they got you on?
18:09I don't know for sure.
18:10Take a stab at it.
18:11Ten or twelve, I guess.
18:12You know how much that'll add up to?
18:13Not for certain.
18:14You can do one to fourteen on each count.
18:16I'm still young.
18:17They can make them run consecutively.
18:22Now, come on, Larwell.
18:23Why'd you print the slips?
18:25Well, suppose I tell you.
18:26Then what?
18:27That's not up to us.
18:28The judge will find out, won't he?
18:29He'll put it down that way.
18:31Well, a couple of guys I know.
18:32I did it for them.
18:33What guys?
18:35Wes and Ralph.
18:37Go on.
18:39It was their idea.
18:40They offered me a deal.
18:41A thousand dollars for a hundred slips.
18:43Well, I needed the money.
18:44Yeah.
18:45After I made them up,
18:46Ralph said they only wanted forty-five of them.
18:48We got into a beef about it.
18:50He won.
18:51What do you mean?
18:52I gave him forty-five pinks.
18:53He gave me five hundred bucks.
18:55You know where these fellas live?
18:56I couldn't pin it down.
18:57It was street and number.
18:58You've got an idea.
18:59Apartment someplace out in Hollywood.
19:01The girl live there, too?
19:02You mean Nicky?
19:03That's right.
19:04Sure.
19:05She's Ralph's wife.
19:06Must be with him.
19:07When'd you see him last?
19:08Yesterday.
19:09What about?
19:10Ralph called me on the phone.
19:11Wanted to set up a meeting.
19:13Uh-huh.
19:14We had a cup of coffee together.
19:16All three of you?
19:17Just Ralph and Wes.
19:18What'd they want?
19:19The rest of the pink slips.
19:20Said things were going so well,
19:22they could use them all.
19:23Did you make a deal?
19:24Yeah, I was supposed to deliver the slips this morning.
19:26Your friends kind of interrupted me.
19:28Where were you gonna meet them?
19:29Drugstore on Sunset.
19:30Corner of Oakwood and Sunset.
19:32What time?
19:33About nine-thirty.
19:34Guess I'm not gonna make it.
19:36Well, they won't be disappointed.
19:37Huh?
19:38We'll take your place.
19:40The three suspects were taken into custody.
19:42While other teams of detectives questioned the two men,
19:44Frank and I interrogated the Prescott woman.
19:54All right if I smoke?
19:56Sorry, with us.
19:57Thanks.
19:58You're welcome.
19:59Thanks.
20:00Thanks.
20:01Thanks.
20:02Thanks.
20:03Thanks.
20:04Thanks.
20:05Thanks.
20:06Thanks.
20:07Thanks.
20:08Thanks.
20:09You ready to tell us about him, Miss Prescott?
20:11Anything you want to know.
20:13All right, let's start with the stolen cars.
20:16I'm afraid I'm going to need an ashtray.
20:20Right in front of you.
20:21The police think of everything, don't they?
20:23We try.
20:25Now about the cars.
20:28Is that what Ralph's been up to?
20:30It wouldn't surprise me.
20:32I'll bet it wouldn't.
20:33I never really trusted him, Wes, either, for that matter.
20:36Mm-hmm.
20:37Of course, they never told me a thing about it.
20:40Oh, sure.
20:46No, really, Sergeant.
20:48Why, if I'd known they were breaking the law,
20:50I'd have reported it myself.
20:52Even my own husband.
20:53I wouldn't stand for anything like that.
20:55Then why were you in on it, too?
20:57You've got no right to accuse me.
20:59Just because a woman's married to a man,
21:01you can't blame her for what her husband does.
21:03Three of the victims made phone calls to fictitious dealers.
21:06They talked to a woman.
21:07She was supposed to be a switchboard operator.
21:10I assure you, I have never worked a switchboard in my life.
21:14There wasn't any switchboard.
21:15Exactly.
21:16But you were on the other end of the phone.
21:19Wouldn't that be rather difficult to prove?
21:22Your husband and his pal have been running dummy offices all over town.
21:25Now, we can put you in a half a dozen of them.
21:27I've tried to be a good wife, Sergeant.
21:29I've spent a lot of time with Ralph.
21:31Yeah.
21:32Yeah.
21:33I guess I was wrong about him.
21:35But when you're in love, it's easy to make mistakes.
21:39I'm sure you know what I mean, Sergeant.
21:41Yeah.
21:42I'm not responsible for my husband's actions
21:44any more than he's responsible for mine.
21:47Now that I know what he really is, of course that washes us up.
21:51Actually, I'm grateful the whole thing came out.
21:55I wouldn't want to go on living a lie.
21:57Then why don't you stop lying?
22:00I'd get angry if I thought you were serious.
22:03You listen to me, Miss Prescott.
22:05You're in this up to your neck.
22:06You think your husband would be happy with you running around loose
22:08while he's doing a stretch in prison?
22:10Ralph wouldn't want an innocent person to suffer.
22:12Least of all me.
22:14And I'm sure the police feel the same way.
22:17Don't you, Sergeant?
22:20What about Wes Bolton?
22:22What about Wes?
22:23You think he's gonna deal you out too?
22:26He might.
22:28You got them both on your side, is that it?
22:30Everybody's on my side, Sergeant.
22:33Not quite.
22:34Oh, come on now, I'm not so bad.
22:37I don't mean to brag, but I've always been a popular girl.
22:40People take to me, I don't know why, but they just do.
22:43Even you.
22:45I'll bet you could like me if you'd give yourself half a chance.
22:49Could I?
22:50Sure.
22:52Why don't you relax? What have you got to lose?
22:56Ralph will be out of circulation for quite a while.
22:59Yeah.
23:00Well, then.
23:01So will you.
