Injury Prevention and Performance – are they mutually exclusive? What does science tell us?
Professor Alison McGregor shares the background to the academic journey into elite rowing performance at Imperial College, which has been evolving over the past 10-15 years. Its starting point was however, in injury prevention rather than performance enhancement, although this is clearly linked to performance. The major injury that drove this initial work was low back pain (LBP) and current research papers still noting that LBP accounts for 32% of reported injuries in elite rowers (Wilson et al 2010).
Speaker Biography
Professor Alison McGregor, Human Performance Group, Surgery & Cancer, Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College London is a trained physiotherapist with an MSc in Biomedical Engineering and a PhD in spinal mechanics and low back pain. For the past fifteen years she has researched low back problems by combining clinical experience gained as a physiotherapist, with a working knowledge of bioengineering science gained through her masters and PhD studies. This has permitted an integrated approach to the physiological mechanics of the musculoskeletal system, looking at the: mechanisms of injury; effects of injury on function; and management of injury. Part of Professor McGregor’s current research profile at Imperial College London is in rowing mechanics, performance and back pain, looking at this from the perspective of kinematics, muscle function and neurophysiology. More latterly this work has been applied to study osteoarthritis with a view to developing early interventions and preventative strategies.
Improving Performance Naturally: Sports Science & Medicine Conference for the World’s Leading Sports Scientists and Medical Practitioners in Rowing
The Sports Science & Medicine Conference was held for the first time at the SAS UK & Ireland company headquarters in Marlow. The conference had delegates attend from a variety of Sports Science and Medical disciplines, who travelled from within the UK and around the world – all attracted by an exciting programme which boasts an impressive list of speakers from the leading edge of research and practice. The event was supported by UK Sport and FISA and proved to be a great success.
The conference proceedings will be published online on the BMC Sport Science, Medicine & Rehabilitation website, check here for updates: http://www.biomedcentral.com/bmcsportsscimedrehabil
