HARKER HEIGHTS, TEXAS — Newly released police dashcam footage shows a Texas deputy fatally shooting an unarmed U.S. Navy veteran.
Lyle P. Blanchard, 59, was taken out last August near Harker Heights in Texas by Bell County Sheriff’s deputy Shane Geers.
In February this year, a jury ruled that no charges were to be brought against Geers. However, that hasn’t quelled suspicion surrounding the incident, reported local newspaper the Killeen Herald, which obtained the footage.
Following the incident, police said Geers chased Blanchard when he saw him driving erratically, and that a “gun battle” followed the pursuit.
No gun battle or exchange of fire takes place in the video. Blanchard appears to reach for something and then Geers takes him out. There’s that, plus the fact Geer’s bodycam wasn’t working, the lack of any discernible audio and some conflicting testimonies in the investigation.
Deputy Geer is currently dealing with a federal civil lawsuit from Blanchard’s estate, the Houston Chronicle reported.
