Sugar Blues – High Society Jazz Band 1960
The Sugar blues was recorded by Clarence Williams, obviously he played it many times in the late twenties with vocals by his wife Eva Taylor.
Many years later, Billy Poole, virtually unknown, recorded this tune again with the High Society Jazz Band from France.
It is just amazing how Billie and the band stylewise flow together. A total listening pleasure for the lover of early classic jazz.
The musicians in this French band are leader and trombonist Mowli Jospin with Pierre Merlin trumpet, Claude Rabinet trumpet, Pierre Atlan clarinet., Martine Morel piano, Christian Gervais banjo, Raymond Fonseque tuba and Michel Miroux drums.
This is a band that was formed in 1947 and specialized in the very early styles of jazz of the years 1900-1930. They stlll exist today now under the leadership of trombonist Daniel Barda (since 1968) See their new album at
