Today I want to share a few traditional and nontraditional sickle cell anemia treatment ideas.

There is 1 thing you need right now and if you don't get it within maybe 2 or 3 minutes you will die, what am I talking about? Think of drowning, yea you need oxygen.

Red blood cells carry oxygen to organs that need it and eliminate carbon dioxide. They are shaped like circles, so they can move easier.

When a person has sickle cell anemia their red blood cells are shaped like sickles. Sickles are tool used in farming to cut down stuff and they are shaped like a half moon.

When red bloods cells have this shape they are not as flexible and can stick to things. This slows or stops the flow of blood and oxygen can get to where it's needed.

Let's talk about treatment.

With traditional treatment the goal would be to increase red blood cells in the body and secondly to diagnose and eliminate what is causing the problem.

For example it could be caused by an infection and antibiotics could be used to fight that off and hopefully that could help.

A person may be deficient in an important nutrient such as iron and correcting it could be as simple as a good multivitamin.

For serious cases there is a bone marrow transplant. The problem is finding a person that will give you a healthy bone marrow. Normally the disease marrow would be given chemotherapy to kill off the sickle cells, but doctors have found a way not to use chemotherapy and that is good.

Still immune suppressant drugs still are needed and these do increase the chance of cancer, and problems because they weaken the immune system.

Plus your body could reject it and that could be life threatening.

Let's talk about a few alternative treatments and one is something called Nicosan or Niprisan, which is a blend of a bunch of herbs. In a study with 30 people with this disease that were given these herbs 73% had no sickle cell crisis during the 1 year testing period and the rest had fewer or less severe sickle cell crisis.

Another idea something called thyocyanate which you can get in a supplement. A study in Rockefeller University shows that a half a gram of this substance can relieve a sickle cell crisis.

Sickle cell anemia can bring about pain, and pain medication is often recommended, but another idea which some people forget about is omega 3 is great for pain reduction. Taking this supplement can help.
