Cookin’ The Blues – Merle Koch 1986

Together with Bob Havens, trombone, Eddie Miller tenor sax, Dick Cathcart trumpet and Bob Newman clarinet pianist Merle Koch (pronounced Cook) sets in a relaxed 12 bar blues with Honky Jones bass and V.J. Bourgeois drums.
This was the last session at Merle’s small jazz restaurant called Silver Stope in Virginia City, Nevada. After many years with Pete Fountain in New Orleans Merle would invite many of his jazz musician friends to play at his club several weekends a year. This session on October 19 1986 would be the last one. He would die shortly after having suffered from throat cancer.
(This film was made available to me for posting through Bob Newman, who wrote me that these sessions were highlights in his life)
