Approved | 1h 43min | Drama, Family, Western | 21 January 1958 (USA)

15-year-old orphan Biarn Turner struggles to survive in the rural South in the 1910's. He arrives in a small town where crusty small-town newspaper editor Doyle Magee decides to take the boy in and give him a chance at a regular life. Wealthy local farmer Tobias Brown also takes an interest in Biarn's future, but treats the young man cruelly, masking Tobias' real hidden feelings of affection and genuine concern. Biarn also proves his worth by training racehorses for the climactic annual horse race.

00:00Untie that horse.
00:03I... I can't. It's... it's...
00:05You heard my sister. Untie the horse.
00:16Leave that horse alone.
00:18Leave him alone.
00:30Tie him up again.
00:33Tobias Brown, I've told you my grandfather's statue is not to be used as a hitching post.
00:39That's purely true, Miss Anna Love Price.
00:42But I don't know of any losses I can't tie up to public property.
00:45This statue is public property.
00:47He was one of the great men of Missouri.
00:49And you should have better taste than to desecrate his memory every time you drive into town.
00:54As far as I can see, that's about all the old general is good for.
00:59Well, you would think so.
01:01How could the son of a barefooted sharecropper think anything else?
01:05Well, I'm not barefoot now, Miss Anna Love Price.
01:08I'm not sharing crops either.
01:10Yes, but you would be if it hadn't been for my grandfather.
01:13Why, he even gave your father a ten-acre start in life.
01:16Seems like I've heard all this before, Miss Anna Love Price.
01:20But you go right ahead.
01:22This runaway kid never heard it.
01:24The only reason you come to Delphi is to show off in front of all these people.
01:29And try to impress them with how rich you are.
01:32That's part of it.
01:33That's all of it.
01:35You love to strut around the square in your fancy clothes and brag about how much land you own.
01:41Oh, no, ma'am.
01:43I got another reason.
01:45Yes, you come here to insult my grandfather's memory and to humiliate me.
01:50I like to see you get mad.
01:54Puts a little fire in you.
01:57Takes away some of that pickety look.
01:59You know, you stay mad a little more, you might get some man interested in you as a wife.
02:03Do you good.
02:05You're overstepping yourself.
02:07I overstepped myself years ago, Miss Anna Love Price.
02:10If I hadn't, I'd still be plowing for your family.
02:13If you don't mind, I'll go to your bank and count my money.
