Rockin' in Rhythm Carling Hot Six 1990
The Carling Hot Six in concert in 1990 in Kungshamn, Sweden
I would think that trumpet player Hans Carling's aim in life must have been to start a family band. Already in 1984 an Lp was made with this family band from Gothenburg Sweden.
Just recently Hans sent me a DVD of his family's performance in 1990. Hans plays piano, his wife Aina on banjo featuring their four children. In the years since 1984 they developed to an incredible level of musicianship. The encouraging Papa, the youngster's hard work and determination, exposure to music, being together to practice most of the time at home, but above all, the gift to be extremely musical and talented made this family outstanding.
In this clip we see and hear Max (21) playing clarinet and tenor sax, Gerd (19) on trombone and alt sax, Gunhild (15) on trumpet and Ulf ( yes, only 11) on drums playing their arrangement of Duke Ellington's Rockin' and Rhythm.
I have heard people commenting that there is no bass, well that might well be, but it doesn't take anything away from their ability to swing and play darn hot.
I heard the band first in 1985 when Spiegle Wilcox told me about them, and they have been one of my favourite bands ever since.
