INTERVIEW AND SESSION FILMED FOR BALCONY TV LONDON
PRESENTED BY IVAN BERRY
PRODUCED BY VIDEO-BOX

Cry Tomorrow is a little gem. As are diamonds. A casually stunning love letter to classic song. An album whose sound recalls 'Loaded' era Velvet Underground tunes alongside The Modern Lovers and Brill Building pop - but ultimately all revolves around Stephanie Finch's relaxed, cool, confident presence. Backed by The Company Men: Chuck Prophet, Kelley Stoltz, and Rusty Miller, Cry Tomorrow is an instant classic.
Stephanie's butter-wouldn't-melt voice (except when topping apple pie) on one hand, and the Company Men's sometimes raucous but always soulful harmonies on the other - lives at the heart of all Ms. Finch's songs. It gives Cry Tomorrow a quiet urgency and a unique twist.
The CD (with TV noir jacket art) includes some intriguing covers: an unreleased Randy Newman song, 'She's the One' (a bent out-take from the short-lived but incendiary TV musical Cop Rock), as well as Ms. Finch's take on the Prophet/Alejandro Escovedo tune 'Sensitive Boys' "... turn your amps up loud ... I need you more than ever now". It evokes the album's subtle intelligence: a heartfelt ballad given an ironic twist, still bathed in tenderness.
If Cry Tomorrow were a movie, it'd be a Hal Hartley film - with better jokes. And popcorn you'd be willing to share.
