00:00Cold War Berlin is a divided city of secrets.
00:04To gain crucial intelligence, governments
00:07are willing to greenlight what seem like impossible missions.
00:15Berlin, during this time, you've
00:17got British, American, and Soviet spies
00:19all flocking to the city to try to get their hands
00:23on any sort of information that can give their country just
00:25a little bit of an edge.
00:28Berlin had become a vast network
00:31of underground communication channels
00:34with various agencies, various intelligence groups,
00:37trading information.
00:39It's a vast network.
00:41It's amazing.
00:42In 1954, the US and Britain decide
00:45to collaborate on an audacious plan.
00:49The CIA with MI6 want to build a tunnel to tap into phone lines
00:54so that we could listen to what the East Germans
00:56were talking about.
00:59This is a high-risk operation.
01:00East and West are butting heads.
01:02The Soviets want the Americans out of Berlin.
01:05If they discover this tunnel, that'll be their excuse
01:08to kick them out.
01:09They need to build the tunnel without being detected.
01:13But to add to the challenge, the CIA and MI6 operatives
01:18are constantly being monitored by enemy watchtowers
01:21and armed guards.
01:22The area that they select to do this is just 1,500 feet away
01:28from East Berlin.
01:29But on the East Berlin side, where the phone lines are located,
01:32there are prying eyes and military patrols.
01:35So they're going to need a cover story if they're going to get away with it.
01:38So they come up with a plan to build a two-story structure
01:44over where the tunnel will begin.
01:46It provides a cover for unloading equipment and then also removing the dirt
01:51that's going to be pulled out of the tunnel itself.
01:54And this two-story structure will then be disguised as a facility associated
01:59with one of the airfields in the city.
02:01They had to spend seven months laying the groundwork for this building.
02:05Once that was done, they begin advancing the tunnel toward the East German side
02:10of the border.
02:13It took three teams working around the clock in shifts, back-breaking work.
02:19The tunnel operation is very dangerous.
02:21German patrols are going back and forth.
02:24In order to prevent the discovery of the tunnel, the Americans have a lookout that signals
02:29the people do in the tunnel to stop work when the German guards get too close.
02:33They remove 3,000 tons of soil and then replace it with 125 tons of steel
02:39to reinforce the walls of the tunnel.
02:42Six months later, that 1,400-foot tunnel is ready to go,
02:46and it's installed with these teleprinters that are attached to switchboards
02:49that record and print communication.
02:51It's a pretty remarkable achievement.
02:55This wiretap discovers some very interesting things
02:58about the establishment of the East German army and the training of that army.
03:03It also reveals controversies between the border police and the army.
03:07At the time, the CIA and MI6 believed this tunnel
03:11will provide a continuous flow of intelligence for years.
03:15But Mother Nature has other ideas.
03:1711 months and 11 days after the completion of the tunnel, a freak rain event strikes the city of Berlin.
03:26And as a result of very heavy rainfall, the phone lines go out.
03:31A crew is sent to repair the phone lines.
03:35And what did they find?
03:37They found a tap on their lines.
03:40And that wouldn't take any time at all for them to figure out that it was the Allies
03:49underground listening to their intelligence operations.
03:52The following day, Soviets called a press conference revealing the tunnel to the world.
03:59They hope that the exposure will both embarrass the West and deter them from carrying out any future operations.
04:06After the Soviets hold their press conference to reveal the discovery of the tunnel,
04:13other Western nations are not downtrodden at the discovery.
04:16They're impressed by the technology.
04:18They're impressed that we were capable of something quite so bold.
04:21The West's clandestine mission is blown.
04:25But the operation remains one of the CIA's most celebrated successes of the 50s.
04:31While the CIA declassifies a report on the top secret mission in 2007,
04:37it has never fully disclosed the intelligence gathered.
04:41The rest within the vaults remains top secret.
04:51It's from 15 to 15 to 15 to 16.
04:56In the past, I'll mention the light of the bow.
04:59Our illustrator Trojan is coming to the 10th and the danger,
05:00depending on the light of the Lauter Trojan,
05:01which generates the capture of the bow.
05:02According to the sky, it has never been rebuilt by the bow.
05:04The bow is right on the mast.
05:05What is the movement in the gate?
05:07The angels are flying in the 50s.
05:09The star of the bow is right here toward the rock.
05:11The cel of the bow is right on the face.
05:11The εν curtain of the bow is right.
05:15The bow is right on the blade.
