00:01Millions of tons of perfectly good food is wasted across the food industry each year.
00:06Meanwhile, up to 14 million people in the UK are food insecure,
00:10which means they're skipping meals and struggling to get enough to eat.
00:14Farmers don't want to waste that food. People in factories don't want to waste that food.
00:18People in the shops don't want to waste that food.
00:20They want to find other routes for it and that's where Fairshare comes in.
00:25Fairshare is the UK's biggest charity tackling food waste to support social good.
00:30They take good-to-eat surplus food from across the food industry,
00:34sort it in their regional warehouses and pass it onto a network of over 8,500 charities and community groups.
00:42The Mergeside Hub redistributes quality surplus food to hundreds of community-based organisations
00:48who are working with vulnerable people across the region and parts of North Wales.
00:54It's about using surplus food to bring people together.
00:57Actually, across the UK, that's a million people.
00:59So, you know, a massive kind of supply chain.
01:02And the reason why those partnerships are so important is those million people are interacting
01:07with the kind of community space across the country in Liverpool, in North Wales.
01:12And that surplus food makes a massive difference.
01:15Organisations who benefit from the charity's work include school clubs, community centres and pantries,
01:21hostels, older people's lunch clubs and hospices.
01:25Three-quarters of the organisations they provide food to support children and families.
01:30It's real people giving up the time to volunteer in these small community organisations across
01:37Mergeside that just make such a massive difference.
01:40One of the charity's long-standing partnerships is with Muller, starting in 2013.
01:44And their donations of dairy products such as milk and yoghurts has recently reached a milestone.
01:50They've donated the equivalent of four million meals to people across the UK.
01:54And we also participate with them in various campaigns, that they're in a summer hunger campaign.
02:00And again, we're really proud that we're able to help Fairshare meet the demand.
02:05Because there's a lot of children that go hungry.
02:07And there's a number of fucking four million children go hungry.
02:10So the fact that we can help support Fairshare with that is really important to us.
02:16As well as food, they've donated time with its volunteering scheme where employees around the country donate their time to give back to the community.
02:27When you go out there and actually spend time donating your time with local communities, it leaves an impression on you.
02:34In November 2024, the charity opened a new Coronation Food Hub in Knowsley.
02:38This partnership in Merseyside is the first of many for the Coronation Food Project, an initiative inspired by His Majesty King Charles to transform the UK's ability to tackle food waste and fight hunger.
02:52Actually, that's enabling us to do lots more.
02:54So it's a much bigger space.
02:56But also we're able to do employability work.
