Gunwharf Pride murals unveiled - video by Nuno Cardoso
Transcript
00:00Hi, my name's Yvonne Clay. I'm the Centre Director here at Gunwulf Keys, which is where we're located today.
00:07As part of celebrating Portsmouth's opportunity to be UK City of Pride this year,
00:14we've been working with local street artists like Mark here to really pull together some beautiful murals
00:19that will help us deliver that inclusive feel at the centre.
00:23Excellent. And I understand that it's not the only one that is here, so it's also spread around Gunwulf,
00:29could you talk us through what people will see as they are walking around the area?
00:34Well, as they arrive and as they leave, there are five big murals around the centre.
00:38They've all been done by different local artists.
00:41So we've got Mark who's worked with his students at Haventon South Downs College.
00:46We've got the two sisters who have done some wonderful street art as you go into our car park.
00:52Fark FK, as you leave with his birds and his beautiful pride flag.
00:57And then we've got a wonderful, big, gold-leaf crowd, which has been done by the Forgotten Creative,
01:05not excluding Sammo, Mr. Sammo's love work that's in our central square area.
01:13So yeah, lots to see.
01:15Excellent. And so also, finishing touches happening to the final piece of the year as well.
01:20What's the reaction been like since, you know, all the art has been completely fantastic?
01:25It has been amazing.
01:27And all the artists have said how many people have talked to them, asked them about it.
01:32And particularly for Mr. Sammo, a trans artist who's based here in Portsmouth.
01:38He said it's been such an inclusive place to be and the opportunity to share how he feels,
01:44why he's doing it, what he's passionate about has been absolutely brilliant.
01:48Because for us here, we're an inclusive centre.
01:51So we want everybody to feel really safe, really secure when they come here.
01:57And that includes the LGBTQ plus community, 365 days a year.
02:02So yeah, it's just been joyous.
02:04Excellent. So would you say, in the heart of the shopping experience,
02:09obviously, in the Dunwall?
02:11That's what our guests have told us, which is fantastic.
02:13Fantastic. We have been known as being perhaps a little bit corporate, a little bit grey.
02:18And everybody who's come on site and has seen these brilliant pieces of artwork,
02:22they're just loving it.
02:23So I think you can expect to see more in the future.
02:26Yeah, we'll be going down the street art route, definitely moving forward
02:30because of the reaction we've had.
02:32Brilliant. And so is it going to be a final place for these artworks to be here going forward?
02:38These artworks will definitely be here for the entire month of June.
02:42But based on the reaction we've had, I think we'll see them here for a lot longer.
