01:58years old she was standing in the parking lot about right here she was kind of teary-eyed and
02:04distraught and i actually said where's your mom and she just kind of looked around and i didn't see
02:10any adults out here with her so i immediately called 911 i have a child holding you sweetheart

02:40her where's mommy's car and she pointed to her mom's car which her mom's car was on the other end
02:47in the parking lot closer to the fire hydrant it was a blue four-door sedan and i approached the car
02:53and i peeked through the window oh my gosh there's blood on the front seat of the car okay stay on the

07:32at what point did you know that she was interested in robert marks she shows me a picture of him and
07:40so i say okay he's nice looking and she just started beaming like she started smiling but it seems that
07:47nobody at the school knows about the affair between the teacher and the assistant principal did you have
07:54any inkling that they had a relationship not at all now she did kind of say i think he's so cute
08:03turns out dr marks is hiding more than an office romance the thing is robert marks is married

09:10she gets someone who's dr robert marks and he wants her he's pursuing her a new love the promise of a new
09:22family it's everything lintel's been hoping for but she has no idea what truly lies ahead
09:31something horrible has happened to lintel washington and where is she
09:40lintel washington is still considered missing tonight
09:50the investigation started thursday when washington's three-year-old daughter was found wandering around a
09:55parking lot that little girl got blood on her feet somebody heard her mom with her mother missing
10:02that little girl as you can hear on this police dash cam video soon begins innocently revealing family secrets
10:10you mommy got a baby in her coming who learns that she's pregnant first did she reveal it to you
10:19oh yes she did i'm two months pregnant my baby looks so beautiful in my womb she said
10:29this baby is for robert marks she's pregnant with robert mark's baby right and i'm like oh my goodness what
10:36is he saying and she tells me he's happy in lintel's apartment detectives will later find sonograms
10:45tracking her pregnancy including one announcing i'm a girl she says darling that's the name she said oh i love
10:54it then she tells it to robert marks she texts me back and she says girl he loves the name so he was
11:02excited about the name and he was excited about the pregnancy so she was getting her family but then
11:11everything comes crashing down with one click of a mouse robert tells lintel that he's going on a trip
11:19for a few days he's going to panama city to go to a family reunion
11:23a family reunion like his mama his daddy you know his sister
11:34she saw a picture of robert and his wife on a cruise she saw it on social media she says
11:40does this look like a couple that's going through a divorce and i said no
11:47she spent the whole weekend trying to get in contact with him and he was away on his trip and
11:54so she was getting more and more upset angry mad she was saying i'm going to his house
12:04lintel gets to robert's house and there's a huge revelation remember how she believed that
12:12they lived on separate floors because they were getting a divorce she said girl that boy told me
12:20he stayed in his two-story house he lives in the damn trailer girl and she says he's gonna pay child
12:27support and i'm gonna tell his wife she said oh i'm gonna tell a wife she was upset
12:33by the time robert returns from his cruise on june 6th he has got one angry lintel washington waiting
12:45for him and he knows he's got a problem lintel sends a blunt text message to marks questioning
12:52whether he's truly committed to her and to their unborn baby girl just keep it 100 with me do you really
13:00want me or are you quitting to run away from your responsibilities with me and our unborn daughter
13:09at some point he suggested they get together she says do you think i should meet him face to face
13:15and i said yes say this way you'll know if he's lying i say look him in his face and see if he's lying
13:22on the internet just days later lintel is missing lintel washington and her daughter lived in a one
13:31bedroom apartment very close to where lintel's car was found so police want to know why lintel would
13:39have parked there and why her daughter would have been left behind it's that scared little girl who
13:46offers a crucial clue.
13:51Mr. Robbie did that blood?
13:52Yeah, Mr. Robbie did that blood.
13:55The police have no idea at that point who that person is
13:59until the friend and coworker, Jamisha, shows up at the scene.
14:02I said, Mr. Robbie from the school, Mr. Robbie?
14:07And she was shaking her head.
14:08Mr. Robbie is the name Lintel's daughter calls Robert Marks.
14:13I said to the police officer, they were in a relationship.
14:16I said, but he would be the first, the first place that I would start.
14:22Investigators know that the clock is ticking.
14:25So they waste no time in talking to Robert Marks.
14:29Hi, Mr. Marks, I'm Detective Woodard.
14:31This is my Sergeant.
14:33This is an urgent situation.
14:35They need to find Lintel Washington because she's clearly injured.
14:42Probably looking for Lintel.
14:44You know where she's at.
14:46With precious time slipping away, what will Marks reveal?
14:50It's been less than 24 hours since Lintel Washington went missing,
15:08and police are talking with Robert Marks, the man with whom she was having an affair.
15:13They met, he tells them, in a Walmart parking lot near his home.
15:23Marks admits to the affair.
15:24I think she does now.
15:25He also claims the parking lot rendezvous was completely innocent.
15:30He also claims the parking lot rendezvous was completely innocent.
15:36Who saw me before yesterday?
15:39Just to tell them.
15:40Does she ever threaten to talk to your wife?
15:41Never.
15:42Never.
15:42Never.
15:43So that would be news to you, that she's planning on talking to your wife?
15:47He says, yes, I was with Lintel.
15:57And then afterwards, she went her separate ways and I went and hung out at a restaurant.
16:10He tells police that the night before he was watching the basketball game at a local bar called Twin Peaks.
16:29At a local bar called Twin Peaks.
16:53It seems that Robert Marks was the last adult to see Lintel.
16:57But to know for sure, police need to find her.
17:01An active scene is unfolding as detectives search for Lintel Washington.
17:07Using cell phone records, police determined that on the night she went missing,
17:11Lintel may have been across the Mississippi River in neighboring Iberville Parish.
17:20It's remote, it's rural, it's farmland, it's sugar cane field.
17:24It was a massive search effort.
17:27In the air, on ATVs, and on foot.
17:34Chief Criminal Deputy Ronnie Hebert takes me to that rural area where his investigators were searching for the missing mom.
17:42You had heard there was a woman missing and a little child that was found.
17:48Right.
17:49Did your gut instinct tell you anything?
17:50I was hoping and praying that they would find her alive.
17:53But my gut instinct told me that she would probably be deceased.
17:56How big is the search?
17:58This is a massive area.
17:59Cane fields, a lot of water.
18:04Sheriff Brett Stacey launched a couple of boats to show us one of the first places he and his deputies thought to look.
18:11It's a place called Whiskey Bay.
18:14We were drawn here because of this place's history.
18:17You want to get rid of a body, this is a good place to go.
18:22In South Louisiana, with this heat and this humidity, a body will decompose very rapidly.
18:29That makes time to find in the body, get into the autopsy quick and determine cause of death.
18:36Especially in a homicide case, time is important.
18:42Authorities search and search and search.
18:45Finally, on the sixth day, they catch a break.
18:48Well, this is certainly off the beaten path.
18:52It is, really.
18:53As you see, all the cane they got, right?
18:55So you got the call and where had they found a body?
18:59Right up in this area, right here.
19:01That time they had some water in this ditch because it was, to me, it was a watery grave.
19:05And there was no question in her mind she had been dumped there.
19:07Absolutely, she was a transfer dump.
19:09It's very humid, we have a lot of flies, spring maggots, and the body can deteriorate at such a rapid pace.
19:22Using dental records, authorities are able to confirm it is indeed Lintel, Washington.
19:29The coroner rules her death a homicide.
19:34The cause, a single gunshot wound to the head.
19:38I remember I just dropped to the floor and then my husband caught me.
19:46I couldn't even stand up.
19:48My main concern at that point was her daughter.
19:52And keeping her away from the television because they were constantly running the pictures
19:59and the, you know, slang teacher and, you know, all of these different things on the news.
20:04That day just, that changed my life forever.
20:07Forever.
20:08In what ways?
20:09That I knew I had to do better now.
20:11This child is going to need her father in her life.
20:17For Melissa Mason, old conversations still haunt and hurt.
20:22She asked, well, should I meet him face to face?
20:26And I told her, yes.
20:27I said, that way you'll know if he's telling the truth.
20:30And so, that was hard for me because I said yes and I should have said no.
20:43Lintel Washington's murder is horrible enough.
20:45Lintel Washington's murder is horrible enough, but according to authorities, there's a second victim.
20:53Even after the trauma of Lintel Washington being shot in the head,
20:58the coroner believed that the child in there would have been able to be saved.
21:03Through DNA testing, police determined that Lintel Washington was indeed carrying Robert Mark's baby.
21:11He was the father of the child and that Lintel was threatening to tell his wife.
21:17So we figured we had a motive.
21:20Was there any doubt in your mind once they found her body?
21:23Now that I understood that it was murder, I knew that he had done it.
21:29But police need proof, and their key witness is only three years old.
21:38What else does that little toddler know?
21:53Friends of Lintel have remained hopeful, but tonight they gather to remember the person she was.
22:03Authorities suspect that Lintel Washington was shot and killed by Robert Marks.
22:07And to help build their case, they turned to the only known eyewitness.
22:12They do these forensic interviews of children with people who are specifically skilled in this area
22:21to interview a child without further traumatizing them.
22:25You have to protect her, because you don't know what's down the line for her psychologically.
22:29But understand that she's vital to your case.
22:32When we found the body, we did find that she was shot in the head.
22:37So that corroborated what the little girl said.
22:40You hear the little girl in her own voice saying, my mama's asleep by a lake.
22:46Mommy in the lake?
22:51Yeah.
22:57That means she must've been back here.
22:58That this ditch was full of water.
22:59Yeah.
23:00Right, and that she must've been here.
23:01She must've been here.
23:09She must have been here.
23:10She must've been here.
23:11Yeah.
23:12She must have been here.
23:14She must have been here.
23:20But Marks insists that he has no idea what the three-year-old is talking about.
23:25You know, her daughter's pretty intelligent.
23:27Absolutely.
23:33Okay, well, we've spoken with her daughter.
23:35Why would her daughter say you heard her?
23:37Heard me.
23:39Lintel.
23:42Her reveals.
23:43No, no.
23:45Physically harmed her.
23:48Why would she say that?
23:52Investigators are reluctant to build their entire case on statements from a three-year-old.
23:59But it turns out there's another witness.
24:01A silent witness that was with Lintel and Marks the entire time.
24:06So Robert Marks, originally when he's questioned by detectives, he says, yes, I was with Lintel.
24:13When's the last time you saw her?
24:15I saw her.
24:16Yesterday.
24:17Without a Walmart.
24:18He said afterwards she went her separate ways and I went and hung out with the guys at a restaurant.
24:25It's not what happened according to his cell phone records.
24:30My name is Cy Ray.
24:32My role in investigations like this as a subject matter expert in geolocation is to analyze data that is captured by the cell phone carriers.
24:40Investigators pull those cell phone records for both Marks and Lintel from the hours before and after she went missing.
24:48We have a system that we can map those and visualize that.
24:52That's what we're looking at here.
24:54And when we look at this data, we can actually see travel patterns.
24:57How people are driving around town.
24:59Red icons are Lintel's device.
25:03Blue icons are Robert's device.
25:05Where I'm starting here is we're looking at when both of them were at home before Lintel leaves her house that night.
25:12We know that Robert Marks texted Lintel Washington.
25:17Said he wanted to meet up.
25:19She drove from her house up to Baker.
25:21The data confirms at least part of Robert Marks' statement to police.
25:26He and Lintel did meet up near the Baker Walmart at a little after 8 o'clock the night Lintel disappeared.
25:33She comes up there in her car with her baby in the back seat.
25:37She meets Robert Marks.
25:40He pulls up on a motorcycle.
25:42He gets into the car.
25:44If you remember, red icons are Lintel's device.
25:49Blue icons are Robert's device.
25:51But you can see here that when red and blue are overlaid directly on top of each other, we're getting this purple color.
25:57This is just a really good indication that these two devices are traveling together.
26:01The phone ends up in the north end of the parish.
26:05Veterans Police Department and Sheriff's Office has a pistol range out in that area.
26:09And it's really kind of a secluded area.
26:12Not a lot of reason for the phone to go there.
26:14Our evidence shows that she was killed there.
26:18It would not have surprised the neighbors because it's a shooting range.
26:22Investigators believe Marks might have chosen a place where nobody would be suspicious of gunshots.
26:28And after staying there for about 10 minutes, records show the phones were on the move again.
26:37He takes the Huey P. Long, Old Mississippi River Bridge, and he takes Highway 190 and ends up going to Rhema.
26:47Lintel's daughter is in the back seat of the car while all of this is going on.
26:54We're kind of out in the middle of nowhere now off of I-10.
26:57And both devices are going to stop together for a period of about 30 minutes.
27:01And there's really nothing out there to stop at.
27:04Ultimately, Lintel will be found in this area.
27:13The records then show Marks and Lintel's phones traveling east on I-10, right back into Baton Rouge.
27:21Then her phone goes offline.
27:25The assumption then was that her phone was maybe tossed into the lake at that point.
27:31According to the police's theory, Marks has managed to hide Lintel's body and gotten rid of her phone.
27:38Now, he's got a deal with her blood-soaked car and her three-year-old daughter.
27:43So, he heads back towards Lintel's home.
27:47That car was parked over off of Sherwood Forest.
27:51And that morning, this baby, this three-year-old child, had gotten out of the car.
27:59It's important to remember that this is an ongoing affair.
28:02They're communicating constantly.
28:04And what's interesting about this is she goes missing and guess who stops calling her phone?
28:09And that's because he knows Lintel Washington is in a sugarcane field.
28:13She's dead and she's not going to answer the phone.
28:16Marks isn't contacting Lintel.
28:19But it doesn't mean he's finished making calls for the night.
28:22He calls another lady friend.
28:25He's dating another woman.
28:27That's right.
28:29He's got girlfriend number two.
28:31Once police confirm that that is indeed Lintel Washington who they found dead in a ditch.
28:47Police then charge Robert Marks with her murder.
28:51They charge him with feticide and several other charges.
28:58Does it upset you that she's dead?
29:00Anything you want to say to your family?
29:05Within a couple of days of Robert Marks being arrested, he had two lawyers.
29:09They, of course, have to go to work.
29:11Any DNA evidence I would challenge that has been contaminated.
29:15The body lay in the field for many, many days.
29:19But police say they've got another witness.
29:23Cell phone records show that Robert Marks returns to Baker to get his motorcycle around 11 o'clock on the night Lintel is murdered.
29:32But if he leaves the three-year-old and Lintel's Toyota in this parking lot, who gets him all the way back to his motorcycle?
29:41I was just watching the news and they were saying about, oh, they showed him arrested and they showed the lady and he asked to fight that.
29:49They said, this happened Wednesday night.
29:51And I'm like, oh my God, Wednesday night?
29:56I was with him.
29:58So another woman emerges in this story, Trameka Jackson.
30:04Trameka is also having an affair with Robert.
30:09Lintel doesn't know about her.
30:11Robert's wife doesn't know about her.
30:14He actually told her he was a medical doctor.
30:17What's going on in your mind that you're creating all of these false images of yourself?
30:21What are you doing?
30:23You know, you're lying to women.
30:25You're making them think it's just them.
30:27You're getting them to trust you.
30:29I'm trying to pray if I'm talking.
30:32I don't have, I want to give you whatever information.
30:36She's scared.
30:37She doesn't want to be involved in this.
30:38She comes in voluntarily with an attorney.
30:42Police know that Trameka and Robert Marks are in close contact, texting and calling back and forth the night Lintel is murdered.
30:51It was like, um, 10, he called me and then he was like, well, would you come get me?
30:57It's going to be a little later, but I'm going to call you.
31:01I just didn't, I mean, they put nothing together.
31:05Trameka is able to place Robert at the scene where the car was abandoned with Lintel's little girl.
31:16She picked him up on that street that leads into the apartment complex to the parking lot where the little girl was left.
31:27So we go out to a local bank and pull video.
31:31Trameka has a Dodge with very specific lights.
31:36Think of it as a bar of lights.
31:38And it's not the greatest of video, but you can clearly see in the background.
31:43His second girlfriend comes to pick him up.
31:47Trameka says after she picked up Robert, she drove him back to Baker so he could get his motorcycle.
31:54Police are convinced that Trameka was simply doing what Robert asked her to do and that she was in the dark about both Lintel's murder and the abandonment of her daughter.
32:06She was very forthcoming as far as her peace and taking him away from the scene.
32:13No indication that she knew anything about what had gone on.
32:21I think it's safe to say that a lot of people in the community were pretty pleased that he was behind bars, considering what he was charged with.
32:29So it was really surprising when bail was set and he actually was able to leave jail.
32:37Bail was over $800,000.
32:40This man just murdered a pregnant woman with his child in her belly and kidnapped my child to go dump their body.
32:48And y'all telling me he's not a danger or a flight risk?
32:52I actually had the opportunity to interview Robert.
32:54He was leaving the East Baton Rouge Parish Courthouse and he came out and I said, Robert, is there anything you'd like to say?
33:01First, I want to express sympathy to the family of the victim.
33:04I reassure you that I had nothing to do with this.
33:07He looked me in the eye and said I had nothing to do with it.
33:10Marx's lawyers also insist their client is not a murderer.
33:17The fact that crime is committed and all of a sudden this gentleman who has everything to lose is drug into this, it's about the sensationalism.
33:30As the state prepares to go to trial, the strongest piece of evidence they have against Robert Marx might be what the video doesn't show.
33:47It's been nearly six years since Lintel Washington was killed.
34:00And after many delays, the stage is finally set for a trial.
34:06The opening statements began today in the trial of a former assistant principal.
34:14He's on trial for her murder in Iberville Parish five years ago.
34:17The trial of Robert Marx began with high emotion.
34:23In his colorful opening statements, District Attorney Tony Clayton asks the Louisiana jury to serve up what he calls gumbo justice.
34:34In Louisiana, we love gumbo.
34:36I told the jury that I'm going to make a gumbo.
34:38I'm going to pull up his Google records.
34:42I'm going to take his phone records.
34:45I'm going to take his computer.
34:48I'm going to put all that in the pot and cook it up.
34:51Let's serve it to him cold, like that ice cold water that runs through his vein.
34:57The defense argues that there's no murder weapon, no DNA, and no eyewitness tying marks to the crime.
35:07They don't have a case.
35:12Of course, the prosecution maintains they do have an eyewitness, Lintel's daughter.
35:19Now, at nine years old, she takes the stand to confirm the statements she made to police back in 2016.
35:28What did you hear?
35:30When mommy got hurt.
35:33What did you hear with your ears?
35:36My ears!
35:38Did you say Mr. Robbie hurt mommy?
35:41Yes, ma'am.
35:42Our purpose of putting the child on the stand today was, one, to show that the child was available,
35:48subject to cross-examination, and two, that that was the child that gave the statement when she was three years old.
35:55It is the strongest moment in the trial, and I think that they handled it so well.
36:02The defense team argues that testimony from a three-year-old isn't exactly reliable, and that some of her statements were inaccurate.
36:11Based on their child witness who told them to go to a water body, the body was recovered on land.
36:18So they've assisted us by discrediting their own three-year-old child witness.
36:24It may have been in the context of a mind of a three-year-old, but everything she said was accurate and backed up by the physical evidence.
36:37Clayton uses Robert Marks' own words against him. Remember, his alibi was that he was at a bar.
36:44Where'd you go after you saw her?
36:46He didn't run around a little bit.
36:48He was about Twin Peaks.
36:50We went to Twin Peaks and pulled up the cameras on that night.
36:53He never showed up to Twin Peaks.
36:56Oddly, the defense doesn't offer up a reason why we don't see Marks on those Twin Peaks videos.
37:05Ultimately, the prosecution lays out what it claims is the motive for the whole thing.
37:11Lintel was pregnant by Robert Marks, and they were going through some problems.
37:18At some point, he implied an abortion.
37:23He didn't say it directly, but the comment made her upset.
37:29Good morning. Happy Valentine's Day. I love you.
37:32Happy Valentine to you, too. You hurt my feelings yesterday. You really did.
37:38He fixes it by saying, no, I was just saying that I support whatever it is that you want to do.
37:45That's what I meant.
37:46Clearly, this is a child that he does not want.
37:49May 24th is a really important date because that's the day that Lintel goes to the doctor,
37:56gets a sonogram, and it's revealed that they are having a little girl.
38:01Guess what Marks' internet searches were on that day?
38:06Rather than searching for things like, I don't know, baby bassinets online,
38:12he starts looking for guns online.
38:15He starts researching bizarre stories involving pregnant women who have gone missing or were murdered.
38:24What happens if you inject somebody with Clorox?
38:27What happens if you inject somebody with petrol?
38:29You see this thought process that he's going through.
38:33He has a life that he does not want to blow up.
38:36The defense doesn't address this point at all, doesn't call witnesses, and doesn't offer a closing statement.
38:48This is a circumstantial case, and in order for him to be found guilty of a circumstantial case,
38:53the state must exclude every reasonable hypothesis of innocence.
38:59They knock on the door and they say, we have a verdict.
39:04We the people, the state of Louisiana, find you Robert Marks.
39:08And when she said that, he stood up and started putting his hands behind his back.
39:12So he knew before the clerk said guilty, he knew what the verdict was.
39:17In the end, it takes jurors only 30 minutes to find Robert Marks guilty on all charges,
39:24including murder and feticide.
39:28And I remember just yelling, he got it right. They got it right.
39:32After five and a half years, finally got all justice served today.
39:37I thought we had raised enough reasonable doubt that the result would have been different.
39:44After the verdict, Marks' wife, Kayla, divorces him, telling 2020 she was shocked to learn of his multiple affairs.
39:53Robert Marks was sentenced to life in prison, and he is actually in one of the worst prisons in this country.
40:02And there are things worse than the death penalty. In Louisiana, they call it Angola.
40:12If Lintel was still here today, I believe that she would have achieved her goal of becoming an administrator.
40:22And I think she would have had a house, very smart daughters, because education was so important for her.
40:32And she would be a great mom.
40:35Her family keeps Lintel alive in the memory of a little girl who helped bring her mother's killer to justice.
40:45I hope that somewhere inside of her, that strong little girl realizes that she stood up for her mom.
40:57Sometimes she'd say, I miss mommy. I wish mommy was here.
41:00And I say, I do too, but mommy's in heaven with the angels now.
41:15You know, but then she's doing well, being drugged people together.
41:17So running around in tongues and клínen, you know, but because that's when you're trying to vibrate the same thing.
41:21Thirdly, as you could see, I'm going to grow back more.
41:28Then, you could take a better dose to get Jesus but apparently not fear.
41:30You're going to have a better dose till whatever y'all worthwhile is.
41:31Then, you're not going to get каких- replace him.
41:34I depend on who you are already.
41:37You're not going to make such an健 many months ago.
