UN chief pleads with countries to pay their share for international peacekeeping

The budget for nine of those operations during the fiscal year that ends on June 30 totals $5.6 billion, 8.2% lower than a year earlier. Each of the U.N.'s 193 member countries is legally obliged to pay its share toward peacekeeping.

00:00The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has pleaded with member countries to pay their shares to help the World Board's peacekeeping operational resources.
00:10The United Nations has been scrambling to respond to funding cuts for aid operations from its bigger donors, the United States and President Donald Trump's administration.
00:19Dear Minister, peace operations can only succeed when backed by robust mandates and clear, predictable and sustained contributions, both financial and logistical.
00:35But these are tough times for the financing of our work across the board.
00:43Peacekeeping is no exception.
00:45It is crucial that we are able to use the increasingly limited resources we have and use them well.
00:54And this requires more flexible rules and processes.
00:58Guterres argue that with a budget representing a tiny fraction of global military spending, around one-half of one percent,
01:07UN peacekeeping remains one of the most effective and cost-effective tools to build international peace and security.
01:13Unfortunately, peacekeeping operations have been facing serious liquidity problems.
01:20It is absolutely essential that all member states respect their financial obligations, paying their contributions in full and on time.
01:30The UN's peacekeeping department currently lead 11 operations in countries including Congo, the Central African Republic, South Sudan, Lebanon, Cyprus and Kosovo.
