Scientific learning at home is a great way to use experimentation to fuel the mind and ignite curiosity, creative problem-solving and enthusiasm for STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) among young students.
Arm & Hammer Baking Soda is partnering with Odyssey of the Mind, a creative problem-solving competition for kids for the 6th consecutive year, continuing their support of the program’s goals aimed at encouraging students to see the world around them in new ways and to make the ordinary into something extraordinary.
The partnership also extends to Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Rocket Day 2025 later this year. Emily Calandrelli (Emily the Space Gal), the 100th woman to go to space joins us at LifeMinute with the latest on both and how to get involved.

00:00Hi, I'm Emily Calandrelli, known as the Space Gal Online. I'm an MIT aerospace engineer turned
00:11science educator with educational TV shows and books. And with everything that I do,
00:17my mission is to make science feel more accessible to more people, to help inspire the next generation
00:23of scientists and engineers, which is why I'm so proud to partner with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda
00:28again, because this is the sixth consecutive year that they've partnered with Odyssey of the Mind.
00:35Now, Odyssey of the Mind is this incredible organization that promotes the STEAM, science,
00:40technology, engineering, art, and mathematics-based competitions to students worldwide. It's so
00:48creative. It's like a mix of theater with problem-solving, art with science. These kids,
00:54they're learning presenting skills, problem-solving skills, teamwork skills, and they are learning
01:00confidence in themselves when it comes to science and engineering. It's just such an incredible
01:06organization. And the world finals is coming up at Michigan State University this year. And because
01:12baking soda is in some of my favorite science experiments, it makes sense that they are partnering
01:16with Odyssey of the Mind again this year. Now, one of my favorite recommendations to families,
01:22if they want to inspire science confidence in their own kids, is with at-home science experiments.
01:28I have two books, my Stay Curious and Keep Exploring book series that have a hundred ideas for different
01:34science activities. My favorite ones in the book include baking soda, because it is just such an
01:40accessible material. And you can make baking soda rockets. You can make paint can rockets. And if you
01:46have really little kids, you could simply combine baking soda with food coloring and vinegar and make
01:52rainbow bubbles. It's such a tactile way to inspire science confidence in their own kids to help them
02:00start thinking of themselves as a scientist. And coming up on October 9th, we are having our second
02:06annual Baking Soda Rocket Day. We did this last year. It was so much fun. It was quite literally a blast.
02:12And we're going to do it again this year, launching thousands of baking soda rockets at schools across
02:19the nation. And if you want to learn more about all of this, you can go to armandhammer.com
