00:00In Brussels, Donald Trump's announcement of 100% tariffs on American films produced in Europe raised eyebrows.
00:13Trump is pushing for a return to Hollywood productions at a time when more and more US studios are opting to shoot in Europe,
00:21lured by significantly lower production costs.
00:24Finally, the American industry sector would be the first penalized.
00:29We, France, are really an attractive country for cinema.
00:32We have seen it on shows, there are more and more foreign productions coming from France.
00:39Trump has also taken aim at the EU's audiovisual directive.
00:43The law requires streaming platforms to feature a quota of European works and contribute financially to local production
00:49in exchange for access to the lucrative EU market.
00:52Culture ministers gathered in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss a review of this text.
00:58While EU countries reject any notion that these rules are retaliatory,
01:03some experts warn culture could be the next casualty in an escalating trade war.
01:07There has to be a balance, so the starting point is pre-Trump, and if he imposes disadvantages on Europe,
01:20Europe needs to restore that balance somehow.
01:23And that means that there would have to be some measures applied to imports from the United States.
01:32Trump's threats could still take a toll on European productions,
01:36on the diversity of languages and cultures that shape the EU's audiovisual identity.
01:41If American streaming giants pull their funding, the impact could be severe.
01:46But the EU shows no sign of backing down from defending its creative industries.
01:51And I think it is very important for them to hear from us ministers of culture that we will be on their side.
01:58We believe that they are an extremely important sector of our culture and we will defend them.
02:05We will defend them, we will defend their jobs, we will defend their creativity and we will defend our rules.
02:09The shadow of Trump's tariffs will loom over the camp festival even if so far it has not shaked the industry to its core.
