00:00We're in proper trouble.
00:02So Tim turns egghead to try to convert him to convertibles.
00:06This hasn't been done before.
00:08In a way that's going to create fact,
00:10and this is something which Fuzz cannot argue with, isn't it?
00:13True.
00:14And deliver the perfect birthday surprise.
00:17Got my car.
00:30Over that hill there, Fuzz, is a town that I am scared to mention called Leeds.
00:43Oh, yeah, there's something about, a bit of a rumble between Leeds and Sheffield.
00:48Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:49To me, Leeds is rubbish, Sheffield.
00:51Anyway, look, forget that.
00:52The real reason we're here is to go and seek a Ford Escort XR3i!
00:59Right, and how have we not done one before?
01:01But now, we're making amends.
01:03Well, actually, we're not just making amends,
01:05we're going for the top of the pile,
01:07because it is my absolute favourite.
01:09It is the Cabriolet!
01:15Hey, what are you stopping for?
01:18The Cabriolet?
01:19Yeah, the convertible.
01:21Drop the hood, look cool.
01:23I thought we were going to get the tin top.
01:24No, we don't want a tin top.
01:25Yeah, of course we want a tin top.
01:26The tin tops are better, they're pure of form, they are the kind of rally car lookalikey.
01:32No, you drop the lid, you're with your partner, chilling, sun's out loving it.
01:36No one wants to listen to that.
01:38Let's talk XR3i.
01:40Fuzz's tin top is the hatchback to the masses.
01:44In the early 80s, with VW's Golf GTI leading the hot hatch market, Ford wanted in.
01:51They added fuel injection to the XR3, launching the XR3i in 1982, followed by the Cabriolet.
01:59With a top speed of 115 miles an hour and a lower price, the XR3i outpaced VW, becoming popular with city dealers and Essex boys.
02:10Sadly, like the decade's fashion, the majority didn't last.
02:14Rust claimed many, leaving just 130 Cabriolets today.
02:19And talking of wide boys, they've finally put a sock in it.
02:26We're gonna go meet Mark, it's Mark's son Jake's car, okay?
02:30Right, okay.
02:31So just hook a left down here.
02:32I haven't seen an XR3i for such a long time.
02:40I know, where have they all disappeared to?
02:42Well, I suppose one of them is here.
02:44Here he is.
02:45All right, mate.
02:46You must be Mark.
02:47Pleased to meet you.
02:48Representing Sheffield, representing Leeds.
02:50Right, where is it then?
02:51It is in here.
02:52Come on then.
02:53Fantastic.
02:54Right.
02:55Here we go.
02:57There we go.
02:58Look at that.
02:59This is just jumping straight back to the late 80s and 90s for me, right there.
03:04And I've got to be honest with you, Mark, the convertible for me is the one I'd choose.
03:08Oh, definitely, yeah.
03:09Best of both worlds.
03:10He's not a fan of convertibles this, Mark.
03:13But the funny thing is, he is a convertible.
03:16Look.
03:17All right.
03:18Have your fun.
03:19Shall we go and talk about Jake?
03:20Yeah.
03:21And then leave you to do your thing?
03:22Okay.
03:27Right, hold on.
03:28Right.
03:35First things first, this hood is absolutely beyond it.
03:40After three and a half decades on top of a Ford Escort, I'd be looking as rough as that.
03:45In fact, I probably am anyway.
03:47Wheels are wrong.
03:49Now, the interior of the car is a different story because it's so well preserved.
03:55It's absolutely brilliant.
03:56A little bit grimy and grubby, so it needs cleaning up.
04:00This has done, wow, nearly 90,000 miles.
04:05Now, that may not seem very many by today's standards.
04:09But for a 1980s Ford, that's coming to the end of its life.
04:14What kind of boy is Jake?
04:15He's great.
04:16I mean, he's got a girlfriend.
04:17He's, you know, we go to the League of Football.
04:18We're massive League United fans.
04:19We've got season tickets.
04:20When did Jake turn up?
04:21Jake was born in 2003, so he's coming up to 21 this year.
04:22He's fine.
04:23Lovely little boy.
04:24And then in 2013, he was poorly for about a week just over.
04:28Really quite poorly.
04:29Just really gone downhill.
04:30He was terrible.
04:31It was awful.
04:32Nobody had any clue.
04:33They didn't.
04:34Lots of tests.
04:35And then, fortunately, one of the doctors in the A&E had come across Kawasaki disease
04:39before.
04:40Kawasaki disease?
04:41Yeah.
04:42Basically, it's an autoimmune disease.
04:43Right.
04:44The body attacks itself.
04:45It's one of the implications of Kawasaki disease and your body attacking yourself is coronary
04:50aneurysms, which is basically your main arteries to your heart.
04:53And then it's just really gone downhill.
04:55It was terrible.
04:56It was awful.
04:57Nobody had any clue.
04:58They didn't.
04:59Lots of tests.
05:00And then, fortunately, one of the doctors in the A&E had come across Kawasaki disease before.
05:04Kawasaki disease?
05:05Yeah.
05:06Basically, it's an autoimmune disease.
05:07Right.
05:08The body attacks itself.
05:09One of the implications of Kawasaki disease and your body attacking yourself is coronary aneurysms,
05:12and your heart can blow up like balloons.
05:14Yeah.
05:15And, unfortunately, after about another week, we went for a scan, and we had the news
05:19that Jake had giant coronary aneurysms on his heart at nine years old.
05:24Then there's no cure for that.
05:26That's huge.
05:27Oh, that was a massive, massive thing.
05:34What we have here is an engine that looks like it's perhaps had some sort of work.
05:40It may have been rebuilt at some point in time, but it's been sitting here for such a long
05:45time that we're going to have to go back in, do things like cam belts and all that kind
05:49of stuff, at least a big service.
05:51What I'm very surprised to see is that there's no rot underneath the battery tray.
05:56What happens is water gathers, a little bit of battery acid as well, and it collects,
06:00and it corrodes through that bulkhead there.
06:07How long were you running your garage for?
06:0915 years.
06:10The XR3i?
06:11Yeah.
06:12Was it a father and son project?
06:13It's a thing we could do together, you know.
06:15Life's precious.
06:16He had to stop playing football.
06:18He couldn't do sports.
06:19Right.
06:20So it was an ideal thing to do when we had the spare time.
06:24We had the space.
06:25We had the garage.
06:26So it was, you know, something to do together.
06:29Eventually got a job and I was working at the garage, which was very busy.
06:32But then when we lost the garage, it sort of...
06:35Back of the queue.
06:36Yeah.
06:37So we put the engine and the gearbox back in the hole and it went in a lockup unit.
06:41And to be honest, we've not looked at it since.
06:44And then in February this year, he had a heart attack.
06:48Caused by a blood clot in one of the aneurysms, it turns out we found out afterwards.
06:51He had a heart attack?
06:5320 year old boy had a heart attack.
06:55It's devastating.
06:56Yeah, yeah.
06:57Yeah.
06:58I can't believe the scale of what you're telling me.
07:00If I could take this away from him and have it myself, you know, I would do it in a heartbeat.
07:04Do you think he thinks the car's not going to happen?
07:06Definitely.
07:07No.
07:08How does that feel for you?
07:09Because this was your project with him.
07:11It's sort of hard to take, really.
07:12I mean, I would love to have got it done.
07:15What would it mean to you to see your boy in that father-son project finished?
07:20Oh, it would mean everything.
07:22Especially if we could do it, you know, for his 21 this year, you know, as like a birthday gift.
07:26It would be just amazing.
07:30Yeah.
07:32Buzz, Bob.
07:33Yeah.
07:34We have an opportunity here.
07:35Yeah.
07:36To do something amazing.
07:37Because there's a once in a lifetime event coming up for Jake, which happens to be...
07:42It's his 21st birthday.
07:43Oh, right.
07:44Okay.
07:45It's a car which he's never thinking he's going to get to drive.
07:47Cool.
07:48So we get it back for that.
07:49The only problem is that's his 21st birthday and we're about there.
07:51What, really?
07:52Yeah.
07:53There's a natural whisker.
07:54I knew there was going to be something.
07:55Are you going to help push this, son?
07:56Go on then.
07:57Let's do it.
07:58Let's get it done.
07:59Right.
08:00Right.
08:01Let's go.
08:08Keep going.
08:09Keep going.
08:10Keep going.
08:11Go on then.
08:12Come on.
08:13Heave away.
08:14That's it.
08:15Right.
08:16Back to the workshop.
08:18With Jake's 21st birthday just around the corner, the race is on to diagnose this car's problems
08:27and get it roadworthy.
08:28Yes.
08:29XR3i.
08:30Get it up.
08:31Fantastic.
08:32Yeah, yeah.
08:33Shame it's a convertible though, isn't it?
08:35For 20 years, this has been the biggest debate we've had.
08:38Yes.
08:39Been the one thing that we genuinely have almost decided to not be friends over.
08:43Yeah.
08:44My opinion of convertibles versus yours.
08:45You love them.
08:46You hate them and I love them.
08:48Well, maybe this car will help them settle their differences.
08:51Okay, right.
08:52Let's have a look and see what we've got underneath here.
08:54It looks nice and shiny on the outside.
08:56I don't know whether that's correct or not.
08:58What I do know is the bonnet's supposed to be down.
09:00Yeah.
09:01Just don't look at it and move on.
09:02Come on, let's keep going.
09:03We don't even know what sort of state the engine's in.
09:05Wheels are wrong, so I know I can get rid of those.
09:08Right.
09:09Take a look inside.
09:10What about those Recaro seats?
09:12Are the seats wrong?
09:13I don't actually know anymore.
09:15The more you look at this car, the less you can be positive.
09:19Right.
09:20We need to inspect the engine.
09:21We need to take a look at the brakes.
09:23We need to replace the wheels.
09:24We know that for sure.
09:25Right.
09:26This hood has absolutely had it.
09:28Look at it.
09:29We have suddenly got on our hands a massive, massive project.
09:36Fuzz and Tim are hoping to revive a 1989 Ford Escort XR3i convertible.
09:42But behind its shabby exterior, it's aged about as well as Fuzz's 80s mullet.
09:48We've got a load of jobs to do on this.
09:50We know that we need to pull that engine apart.
09:53What about those Recaro seats?
09:55Yes, this little car has big problems to solve if it's going to be ready for Jake's
10:0221st in just over six weeks.
10:04First, Fuzz needs to crack the puzzle of the engine.
10:08Has it been rebuilt properly or will it need a complete overhaul?
10:12And those seats look like they might be a later addition.
10:16Question is, should they be returned to original?
10:19And typically for a 1989 convertible, the roof needs replacing.
10:24It's a tricky job that will fuel Fuzz's phobia of soft tops.
10:28Plus, it needs a full paint job, brake check and a new set of wheels.
10:33While Detective Shaw tackles the case of the mysterious seats,
10:37Inspector Townsend tries to bring order to the rotten roof.
10:41Really, what we're looking to do is replace this outer section.
10:46And over the years, it's a shrunk and split and is coming away.
10:54What I'm trying to do is persuade it off here.
11:02So that is what I'm aiming for.
11:04Getting the outer waterproof bit off and saving the inner part, at least for now.
11:10Here's the magic little bit.
11:16There is a cable here.
11:19So if I loosen off that lock nut and pull it out, that cable will go slack.
11:25And therefore, the back of the hood should all come off in one piece.
11:31There we go.
11:38It's off and away.
11:40Next, onto the interior lining.
11:44If this is anything like the exterior, finding a replacement could be tricky.
11:49Has it faded in the sunlight?
11:52Ah!
11:53No, it hasn't.
11:58Although, it's very dusty.
12:03If we can get this clean enough, we may stand a chance of saving the interior roof lining.
12:10And that is good news.
12:11But he still needs the new exterior vinyl and quick.
12:16And on top of that, he's spotted a clue as to the condition of the engine.
12:23Look at this.
12:24Two bottles of cooling system flush.
12:27Now, the idea behind this, it's a bit like drain-on blocker for car cooling systems.
12:34If that means that this is all blocked up, then we're going to have to completely strip this engine.
12:39We have to investigate.
12:41So, Fuzz might be right with his hunch that the engine isn't all it seems.
12:48There's only one way to find out for sure.
12:50Got that sinking feeling.
12:53There we go.
12:55Right.
12:56Up, up and away.
12:57Here's the first telltale sign that something has been going on with this engine.
13:13Because it looks like a pretty fresh cam belt.
13:17Trouble is though, cam belts are great for about 60,000 miles or five years.
13:24This car's been sitting around, I reckon, for more than five years.
13:27So, even though it is, condition-wise, looking pretty good, it could fail at any point.
13:34So, it's as good as an old cam belt.
13:39Slip that off.
13:41It's scrap.
13:43Because it's old.
13:44Like you.
13:45What do you mean, like me?
13:47While the engine's refurbed, the body's been prepped for painting.
13:52Luckily, it's not suffered the rot that hit many 80s cars.
13:59Tim, meanwhile, is desperate to show Fuzz the joys of driving with the wind in his hair.
14:04Or rather his bobble hat.
14:06So, on their day off, Tim's wangled a drive in one of the few cabriolets still on the road.
14:11You can say what you like, Fuzz, but you cannot shake the fun from this car.
14:16Look at this one, you're wearing a permanent...
14:18Look at it, dude, you are loving this.
14:20It's not as much teeth are gritted.
14:22I've worked out what it is.
14:24Have you?
14:25This car, for you, is a reminder of something that you've lost that you'll never get back.
14:29What, are we talking about my hair?
14:32Yes, it is!
14:33When they talk about coverables, what's the first thing they say?
14:35Feel the what in your what?
14:36The wind rushing through your hair!
14:38And there's no air!
14:40Because the wind whisked the hair off on some journey before that's killed your verbals for you.
14:46But the ironic thing is that here we are in an open-top car.
14:51Yet, it's the saloon that is better through the wind.
14:57It's the one that cuts through the air better.
15:01Yep, Tim, Fuzz has a point.
15:03With the roof down, cabriolets are generally less aerodynamic.
15:08Right, power delivery, how does it feel?
15:10Well, actually, I know it's not as quick as modern cars.
15:15Yeah.
15:16But it's perfectly quick enough.
15:17Right.
15:18It does feel faster than we're going.
15:19I've looked at the speedo there thinking 50.
15:21Yeah.
15:2232.
15:23Yes, exactly.
15:24But you're under the speed limit there.
15:26It's a 40 speed limit.
15:27So you're under this limit.
15:28You're safe.
15:29Everything's good.
15:30We're having a good time.
15:31Well, that's kind of good.
15:32It feels that it's just powerful enough.
15:33Yeah.
15:34Modern cars are tear away from roundabouts and junctions with such speed.
15:39But it's all being done by the cars onboard computer systems.
15:44So it's not really the driver that's doing it.
15:46Whereas the driver has to do it in cars in this area.
15:50So many cars look better in convertible form and I think this does.
15:53The Aston Martin DB9.
15:54The Volante, the convertible one, looks better.
15:56How can I prove it to you then?
15:58That you're having a better time now than you would in a coupe?
16:01Simple.
16:02You have to do it scientifically.
16:04Science is fact.
16:06OK, then.
16:07I will prove it.
16:08The convertibles are more non-scientific.
16:10It's going to take some blue sky thinking.
16:13And let me tell you, looking up, it's all very grey.
16:16Especially in your case.
16:19Can we put the hood up there?
16:20Back in the workshop, Fuzz is trying to crack the case of the enigmatic engine.
16:30While it isn't blocked as he feared when he found the cooling system flush.
16:34It's nice and sharp.
16:35All of the waterways are nice and sharp.
16:38He has discovered another problem.
16:41Nestling inside that engine, we found a slightly worn camshaft.
16:48These engines are known for wearing out their camshafts.
16:51And so what we've decided to do is to replace the camshaft.
16:55A new camshaft means the valves will open and close at the correct times to let in fuel and air.
17:01So the engine runs more efficiently.
17:04Before we actually fit the camshaft, what I'm going to do is make sure we've got plenty of oil on the running surfaces of the head here.
17:11So, in goes the camshaft.
17:15Nice and gently through the head.
17:21While the cam operates the valves, the crankshaft uses the energy they produce to help turn the wheels.
17:27The cam and crank are connected via the cam belt.
17:30And they need to be aligned before the belt goes on.
17:33We have a little pointer there on the crankshaft.
17:36A little pointer here on the cam wheel.
17:38A little bit on the pointer on the crank.
17:41And a little bit on the pointer.
17:44So now we'll turn the crank.
17:49And the cam.
17:50There we are.
17:51There we are.
17:52Top dead centre.
17:53Right.
17:54Now to fit the cam belt.
17:57And we go around the crankshaft pulley.
18:00So now what we're going to do is fit a few more of the components and then we'll run it up and see how it's running.
18:09Meanwhile, Tim is investigating the interior.
18:16Luckily, it's in good nick.
18:18But there's still one conundrum.
18:20The seats.
18:21After talking to Ford experts, he's now sure they're aftermarket.
18:25Finding originals could be tricky.
18:27So it's consulting Mark on what to do with them.
18:32Come on in.
18:33Come on in.
18:34I'm hiding it from you.
18:36Right, you ready?
18:37There she is.
18:38Wow.
18:39How does that feel?
18:40Very different to when I last saw it.
18:42Does it really?
18:43Yeah.
18:44Now in terms of the shell, we have dodged a massive bullet.
18:46Of a car of this age with this many miles, usually there's more rot on it.
18:50But actually, it's in really good condition.
18:52Those seats, those Recaros, what is your impression on keeping those seats?
18:55I'm not 100% sure whether they're original or not, but Jake likes them seats.
19:00So if they were to stay, that wouldn't be the end of the world.
19:03They might have been put into the car after the date this car was sold,
19:07which would mean it didn't leave the factory with them.
19:09But if you tell me Jake wants those seats, they stay.
19:12Yeah, definitely.
19:13He likes those seats.
19:14Right.
19:15Next question.
19:16Now, am I right in thinking you guys are pretty into Leeds?
19:19Oh, season ticket holders, mad Leeds fans.
19:21Who's Jake's favourite player?
19:22Ethan Ampadu.
19:23The captain of Leeds?
19:24Yeah.
19:25So when the car's done, I want to get Ethan, I want to get Leeds, I want to get the car,
19:30and get Jake down there.
19:31Would that be a good day for Jake?
19:33Amazing.
19:34Okay, on one condition, that you look to that camera there and you say,
19:40when Leeds pays Sheffield United, I hope Leeds lose.
19:44Absolutely not.
19:45Absolutely not.
19:46I can't possibly do that.
19:47Why not?
19:48If Jake ever saw this programme, he'd rather not have the car.
19:52He'd just show you when you're in.
19:54Will the truth be known, that was a test, and you passed the test.
19:59Because in showing me just how devoted you two are to Leeds United, that gives me the inspiration
20:06to create that day for Jake.
20:08Right, go on, get out of here.
20:09We'll get it sorted, alright?
20:11So, Tim needs to score a football-themed reveal.
20:16And with the seat staying, he now needs to investigate how to clean the old material without damaging it.
20:28In the meantime, Fuzz wants to know if he's solved the puzzle of the engine.
20:32It's now on a rig, ready for a run test.
20:35What's up, Chris?
20:36Hi, Fuzz, you okay?
20:37Yeah, cool.
20:38How are we doing?
20:39Fine, thank you.
20:40So, what is the plan for today?
20:42Basically, what we're doing is we're bedding the camshaft in.
20:44Three fares and revs for like 15 minutes.
20:46Wearing the camshaft in prevents the camshaft from wearing out prematurely.
20:50Yeah, of course.
20:51Is that because all the metals have got to actually wear in together?
20:55All the metals, yes.
20:59I suppose we're looking for leaks.
21:00Looking for fuel leaks, water leaks, which is now visual signs of water leaks.
21:05Obviously, you fitted the camshaft yourself, didn't you, Fuzz?
21:08So, hold on, this is you putting it on to me.
21:13Yes, I did.
21:14So, if there's anything wrong, it's my fault.
21:16It's your fault, you've got to repair it.
21:18Nice one.
21:19Come on.
21:20It's the moment of truth.
21:22Has Fuzz fitted that camshaft and serviced the engine properly?
21:27Fingers crossed.
21:28Here we go.
21:34Tim wants to convert Fuzz to the joys of the Ford Escort XR3i convertible
21:40by refurbing a Mark IV that 20-year-old Leeds fan Jake and his dad were struggling to finish.
21:46Jake's living with the effects of Kawasaki disease.
21:49It's left him with aneurysms that cause a heart attack.
21:53I would love to have got it done.
21:54If I'd have known, we could have got it done then.
21:56But it's just so difficult now to even attempt to do anything.
22:01Fuzz has overhauled the engine.
22:03Now, he's about to find out if he's done the job properly.
22:05Okay, we've done a runner.
22:06It starts.
22:07But will it carry on running without any problems?
22:08So long as the oil pressure stays good.
22:09Yeah.
22:10The water temperature stays good.
22:11Yeah.
22:12The water temperature stays good.
22:13Yeah.
22:14All they can do now is watch and wait for the final results.
22:17That's our 15 minutes up.
22:18Yeah.
22:19So, any problems?
22:20No.
22:21It seems all okay.
22:22Everything's good to go.
22:23Yeah.
22:24No leaks.
22:25I can't see any leaks in there at all or anything like that.
22:28Can I have a job as an engine builder?
22:29Yeah.
22:30No problem.
22:31All right.
22:32Cheers.
22:33So, after a new camshaft and service, it's case closed on the engine.
22:38But the roof, interior, brakes and body all stay ready.
22:43So, now, the new front in the engine must be a new rear.
22:48Not the rear here.
22:49So, we're getting started.
22:51and service its case closed on the engine but the roof interior brakes and
22:56body all still need finishing for just three weeks to Jake's 21st the body's
23:03getting a dose of radiant red that's an escort color and not fuzzies old rock
23:08band while Tim investigates how to clean the seats he's taken on another
23:16challenge proving to fuzz that driving a convertible is more exciting than a
23:20tin top to keep it in the Ford family they're doing a test using the modern
23:27day Mustang the pair and a group of volunteers will drive the hard and soft
23:32top versions while they lap the track Dan Phillips and his fellow neuroscientists
23:39from the brain box research center will scientifically measure how excited the
23:44drivers are at the wheel of each car using monitoring devices on their heads hands
23:49and hearts right rigging time for me yeah that's one we can measure excitement in
23:58several different ways so we've got on the head electrical activity being measured
24:04from the EEG cap yeah that signals coming from the brain on your hand we've got two
24:10electrodes measuring there's your sweat on your hands which is an indication of
24:17excitement what's the more sweaty you get exactly and then also good reliable heart
24:23rate monitoring as well so two electrodes on the chest that'll monitor your heart
24:27right you get excited that heart comes faster
24:29this hasn't been done before in a way that's gonna it's gonna create fact and
24:36this is something which fuzz cannot argue with and we'll get you into the first car
24:40record you doing multiple laps back out rest again and put you back into the second car and we can
24:47compare the data afterwards Tim is the first of several drivers to take to the track into 70
24:54miles an hour on the straight 45 on the bends right and keeping it as consistent as possible
24:59between both roads okay okay no worries thank you very much right let's make history
25:15honestly there is nothing better than the feeling of driving a convertible
25:20right okay what's the drill exactly the same yeah exactly the same
25:40so this is the coupe lovely car to drive
25:43they're both good fun they're both awesome excellent but facts can't lie can they no to get a
25:54scientifically valid result they need to test a range of drivers not just Tim and Fuzz so now
26:01it's the turn of the volunteers both of a great the fixed head was nice I just didn't feel like I was
26:12it's connected I'm really surprised by that the more data we can collect across more subjects with
26:19consistent parameters yeah that's the key thing as well stronger our facts that we prove exactly right
26:23okay and last but by no means least the man Tim needs to persuade gets behind the wheel no no just
26:33get out there it's okay to admit it it's okay you'll have a better time in this go on off you go enjoy
26:38yourself all right
26:48is there a chance that what they are perceiving as being fun won't be as much fun as their body is saying it'd be really hard to try and fool the data
26:57okay results so in other words then Fuzz could be saying I don't like convertibles but secretly he's having a great time if that face says fun I'll dread
27:07to see Fuzz having a bad time
27:08you were going so slow you nearly fell off I did what I was told I went 70 miles per
27:18hour on the straight and 45 miles per hour on the curve
27:22all right here we go test complete from first box so we can send it back to the workshop now
27:46with all the test circuits done the boffins need a few days to crunch the data
27:54with just two weeks until Jake's 21st the seats aren't ready the roof needs its outer vinyl layer and the engine needs fitting the front brakes have seized a common problem
28:05when cars sit around so new ones are going on at the rear fuzz found aftermarket disc brakes so he's reinstating
28:14original drum brakes as fitted by Ford so if drum brakes were good enough for Ford's engineers on the back
28:19they're good enough for me first of all we have to fit our shoes on what I'm going to do is fit
28:27the handbrake cable which goes in like so now it's time to get the brake shoes in so I'm going to get
28:42one in there then big pull and we are almost in place
28:50right now on with our hub and brake drum combo stick the outer bearing in
29:02I'll just leave that for now I'm going to do the other side and I'll do it all up once we've got both sides on
29:10Jake's birthday is just eight days off and the roof's entering its final stages
29:16the interior lining and insulation are clean and back on
29:21now fuzz is attaching the vinyl layer with help from professional fitter AJ
29:25I'm slightly trepidatious about this I know how many things could go wrong too much slack in the roof
29:33and it will flop down it'll be loose it'll flap about in the wind and rain will puddle into it and
29:41gradually seep through a tensioning wire runs along the bottom section of the roof to keep it taut and
29:49and this is the thing that holds the hood tucked underneath here so we've got a kind of a rolled
29:56edge here which sits there and this goes underneath and pulls it all up like that they're reusing the
30:05original wire to fit it under the rolled edge of the body fuzz pulls while AJ feeds it in
30:12when I pull it it needs to go under yeah
30:33oh yeah yeah I'm okay but we need a new wire
30:39I'm afraid that the frayed wire did not have enough strength in it now we're in proper trouble
30:48because we need to find another one of these and fast and we're fast running out of time
30:54Tim has to get his skates on too the seats need cleaning so he's seeing a man called Luke who uses
31:03dry ice to get the job done what I know is that dry ice cleaning is the only thing we can do to
31:09these seats yes when you're using soap and chemicals and you're rubbing it you're braiding
31:13it further you're aging it more you're also introducing water to the foam okay which will
31:18then seep in and over time will degrade it even more dry ice cleaning is non abrasive and there's
31:22no chemicals am I right in thinking that you guys you don't actually create more CO2 no what we do is
31:28we actually use power plants where the CO2 is captured yep so you take that stuff squeeze it down
31:35reduce it down in temperature and it becomes a solid yes at what temperature is it solid minus 78.5
31:41degrees centigrade so the ice can only be handled with gloves otherwise it causes burns so that is
31:47what's amazing about what I have in my hand now is that is the stuff all us human beings produce from
31:54breathing out in solid form a small granule of that as a gas will fill up a 500 litre bottle professor
32:04Shaw wants to show how the dry ice expands into a gas let me use your bag but the demo needs safety kit
32:12so please don't try this at home right then lose all the air out of that and that will hopefully by the
32:18time that we've cleaned these bad boys with that stuff have inflated into a bag and maybe even
32:23exploded yeah so we've got a limited amount of time and then we're going to just fire it compressed
32:29air straight at the surface right the middle section looks pretty uh scangary you'll feel the
32:39cold yeah you can feel the cold but it is completely dry isn't it yeah it is absolutely and is that remaining
32:44color is that what it should have been when it came out of the factory yeah seriously we've just
32:49done that oh my word that's getting close I'm remarkably impressed with this yeah how is this doing
33:02this so there's three processes that are going on here okay there's sublimation yeah there's kinetic
33:07energy and then there's thermal shock right so the sublimation is going from a solid to a gas yes
33:12the kinetic energy is the movement the fact that we're hitting it yes with the dry ice yes and the
33:18other one is the thermal shock when things get cooler they contract yeah so it'll get smaller
33:22and also more brittle so any debris is easier to blast off
33:28come on stop oh my word that was that was terrifying right okay I'll get the rest of the seats in from the
33:41we'll get it done yeah let's get it finished it's now the eve of jake's 21st and luckily they've
33:51sourced and fitted another tensioner for the roof the hood is being held in place and it's nice and
33:58stretch taught like a drum the clean seats are back
34:04and that's not all Tim's just received the results of the experiment you're a fan of tin top cars so
34:16non-convertible that's right I'm a fan of convertibles yep that is going to give a scientific proof as to the
34:22experiment we run which is more fun proving one of us to be wrong wrong wrong come on read it out
34:30really ditch that come on get to it you can't say 83.3 percent preferred the convertible 16.7 percent
34:46preferred the non-convertible this figure for the preferring the non-convertible is fuzz Townsend so
34:57it's true what it's true I do not find convertibles more exciting than tin tops but most people do so we
35:09were both right facts are 83.3 percent prefer the convertible yeah so there we are convertibles are
35:14more fun but not for you where we are weirdo so they're both right as usual but it still could go
35:23horribly wrong on Jake's birthday if they don't finish the bodywork fit the rear window and wheels
35:29fuzz and Tim are over the moon as Jake's car is finished just in time for his 21st and they're
35:39returning it at the perfect place for a Leeds fan Leeds United Academy fast bots I know how did you
35:46manage to pull this off I'll tell you in a minute okay but the star of the show is here the XR3 Ironman
35:51I know and doesn't it look great in the daylight new hood paintwork absolutely gleaming brand new
35:57original wheels yes absolutely magnificent today is a very very special day look I know when we give a
36:03car back it's a special day yeah but 21st birthday I know Jake's 21st right what a present how are we
36:11giving it back to him right Leeds United Academy yeah like Jake is the biggest Leeds fan you'll ever meet
36:17on the planet season ticket holders right his dad Mark has arranged for him to come down here with
36:22his son son for your 21st you can have a tour of the Leeds United Academy the training ground
36:26brilliant the team captain is a guy called Ethan Ampadu yeah Jake absolutely worship yeah cool we've
36:33managed to arrange it here's the 21st present yeah where Mark introduces him to Ethan and Ethan gives
36:39them a tour of here brilliant but at the end of the tour they come out here meet the mascot who will be
36:45me that's you yeah you sneak up with the car behind him hat comes off car comes out the rest is history
36:50a 21st he will never ever ever forget come on then get it hidden I'll get the earth I'll get the outfit on
36:57Mark arrives with son Jake who thinks he's being filmed for Leeds social media
37:09they have no idea Tim is disguised as Leeds mascot top cat to kick things off Leeds captain Ethan Ampadu
37:26who's in on the surprises taking them for a tour hello hello all right yeah good thanks how are you not
37:32so bad Ethan nice to meet you okay yeah how are you good here you go they're saying hello right
37:36well he's like my god that's Ethan Ampadu that's a big deal I can show around well I think I know it
37:43pretty well lifelong Leeds fans yeah yeah season tickets this is yeah where we have a little bit of
37:54activation a little bit of gym test reactions test stuff in the dark yeah this is the boot room
38:02wow my favorite thing in here is this what's that the boot steamer warms them up so especially
38:10these cold mumps oh before you put them up yeah put your boots in there yes that was a boot room sorry
38:15about the smell with fuzz at the wheel of the escort it's time to spring the trap
38:26hello Jake you all right yeah not about here there's something you might recognize that not my car
38:42that is your car that is your escort right never I want to look at this come over here have you any
38:51idea what's going on no I'm gonna hand over to your dad now to explain what's going on
38:56mark this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on your son's 21st birthday come on after everything
39:01you've been through in your life and the heart attack earlier in this year just wanted to get
39:05this done and give you something for your 21st that you could cherish and remember come on bring out
39:10the family come on come and say hello come and say hello give him a cuddle we know from speaking to
39:23your dad that you've had a tough time yeah with your heart condition this is why that your dad wrote
39:27to us and he's been working behind your back with us guys beavering away to get your car on the road so
39:31you could drive it for your 21st today is a massive day for you isn't it it would only be right to sing
39:36him happy birthday on his 21st so come on three two one happy birthday to you you hate attention
39:42happy birthday to you happy birthday to you we have a round of applause for jake and his xr3i please
39:58and also thank you very much to ethan the wonderful ethan after you for giving up your time thank you
40:04mate better training he's got a heart condition anyway from when he was like nine so yeah he's been
40:13through a lot so um yeah he really does deserve it we're really proud of him my biggest thing was
40:20trying not to spoil the moment for him but i don't think he had a clue which i think made it that x a
40:25little bit special when he when he turned around and saw the car with jake needing regular medical
40:31treatment the escort looked relegated to a life unfinished until the boys stepped in and put this
40:38car right back in the premier league the roof is now a complete triumph all ready for when the sun
40:48shines and jake can have scientifically proven more fun inside the seats and rest of the interior are
40:55back to their very best outside the bodywork and wheels are as sharp as the day it rolled out of the
41:01factory and the rebuilt engine is ready to deliver the hot hatch performance that matches the car's
41:08looks how does it feel to be in your car dude it feels really good it feels really nice does it yeah
41:14i can't wait to drive it what is it about the xr3i jake it's just i don't know it's how it looks it's
41:20retro it's it's just how it makes you feel when you're sat in it and hopefully i'm driving it
41:26when you saw the car how did that feel well it feels great i feel like when you hear people
41:32saying this is one of the things that never happens to me and i never win out yeah it feels
41:36like exactly like that it's one of the best days of my life i'm not a very expressive person to be
41:41honest but um i am very excited and this is this is really really exciting can we talk about what
41:49you've been through suffering with a heart attack at the age of 20 is something that most people
41:52couldn't ever imagine yeah so the fact that you've gone through that you cope with it and
41:57you still live with that threat means that you're one hell of a guy thank you and i want you to
42:00remember that thank you so when your dad got this it was a father-son project yeah and then you got
42:07ill and that stopped what's the future for it now well it's great because we we started working on it
42:13together and now we've got it and it's something we can enjoy and go out in together and go to
42:17maybe classic car shows and stuff like that and enjoy them together any bit of time your dad yeah
42:22what does your dad mean to you it means everything to me he's always there whenever i need him really
42:28yeah love him to bit yeah jake there's only one thing left to do and that is to tell you that you
42:33you have been car sos
42:35you
