00:00you've all seen the news proposals for a new barge I say proposals Newcastle
00:06United want a new barge yes and that's what is going to dominate the landscape
00:11of Newcastle United probably for today and and for the next week I would
00:15imagine with support has been given the option to decide whether they'd like to
00:19what was it the three R's refine refine revive redesign redesign redesign
00:26it's three options that what everyone obviously as you now know will have the
00:30choice to me we've just been given a presentation on the proposals nothing
00:39revealed beyond what you guys will see out there at the moment but what I want to
00:43start this video with was more the feeling behind it what do you feel about
00:48it Dom I think it's something that always felt like was inevitable really where you
00:54see the trend a lot of clubs are going down your biggest clubs I mean what was
00:59pointed to us in the presentation if their examples were Inter Milan who've
01:04refined their badge Man City who sort of reimagined their badge and then
01:10Juventus who've gone complete different direction and almost completely redesigned
01:14about these are some of the biggest clubs in Europe and even you look at
01:18Manchester City they've done similar Arsenal have a very simplistic design and
01:23one thing that's been branded is actually a critical ever of Newcastle and
01:30said in the yeah it's a critical error yeah a failure critical failure which is
01:35even stronger of Newcastle's badge is it's almost too intricate too complicated and I
01:40get that I do really love the barge and I'm sure we'll we'll get on to that it's
01:43it's got it's sort of buried in the history and culture of Newcastle as a city but
01:49they are from a branding point of view which is what we've been speaking about today there are
01:55potential shortcomings when you're looking is it instantly recognizable to the not
02:01Newcastle fans but to the broader global audience which Newcastle want to reach
02:05Dan said that is yes by the way this is purely being done for marketing purposes this is purely being
02:11done for reproduction purposes was mentioned in there yeah the complexity of modern embroidery or whatever
02:18it was a machinery that reproduces these badges about upgrading the quality of it
02:23so it's all about simplifying what they currently have which is essentially what
02:28the club said today they want to do simplify what they already have my opinion on
02:33that is I've never been against change but change has to be for the better and my
02:40thoughts on this are this change probably won't be for the better it'll be I think it'll be and I'll
02:47explain that in a second if you want yeah I just think any any change to something quite
02:52traditional and something that has been almost symbolic of probably one of the best eras of
02:57Newcastle United the Premier League era playing in the Champions League winning a cup it's going to be
03:03hard to almost stomach any sort of change even if it is in 10-15 years time you go oh that was
03:08actually quite the changes change is not a problem for me as a person I'm all right to change and I'm
03:15all right to change and even a badge that look it was a it was the 80s incarnation a bit of a
03:21bastardization in some ways of the city badge and it has its oddities if you were to think of it as
03:28from a design perspective it's a bit of a copycat but not really a copycat and there's some elements and
03:33they've sort of hinted at that in in the the piece um so it's probably not a badge you would choose but
03:38because it's aligned to Newcastle United because it's the badge that Newcastle United lifted their
03:44their first trophy it wasn't the badge they used to lift trophies in no so that's the that's the
03:48difference isn't it it's it's is change can change be a good thing change can be a good thing however
03:53I think the redesign which is what they want to do has to be done properly and if you're going to
03:59simplify this current badge I'll probably in in many ways be more more akin to redesigning the
04:06thing if you're going to change it possibly redesign it and if you're going to simplify it
04:11Newcastle United have had some of the best I would I would say simplistic badges of any football club in
04:17England yeah if you go back to the designs of the 1980s the magpie the castle key iconic badge not
04:24iconic team or time but iconic badge yeah the NUFC even probably a touch too simplistic being
04:32brutally honest and doesn't really encompass any uh connection with anything the city or the
04:37heritage or the history so I see why you wouldn't go down that route but just to essentially wash out
04:44the current badge and make it worse would be a bit strange in my opinion I'm not really for that
04:49I think it's odd it's not an easy badge to simplify either because I would say Newcastle's badge is
04:55probably one of the most complex it is but that's what makes it so unique and so special to me I
05:01think it's for you guys as well it's the only badge we've ever told I've ever known isn't it ever known
05:06and I know you said you're hoping to change I think change always scares me a little bit um and it's it's a
05:11process that they absolutely have to get right and I think one thing they did portray in there is that
05:16it is a very sensitive subject and how the club go about expressing this idea of fans I think
05:23is a very difficult thing to do they've got to get it right um and how they do that
05:28it's on them it's really it's a it's a really difficult process so what fans are going to be
05:34given the option to do uh members and yeah sorry you're giving us the details I was like oh what's
05:43happening now no no no just giving you notes they're moving negated what
05:48no all right no so fans obviously have until there'll be a survey that's well out at 12 it'll
05:56already be with you now if you're a member or a season ticket yes and you'll have a week to
06:00fill in a survey cite your preferences and things like that and then the club will take
06:05all that on board have further meetings and what did what I did take from it is the badge will change
06:13in some way shape or form keeping it the same as an option yeah that's that was one thing that was
06:18stressed next season it will still be the same yeah you're looking potentially the season after but
06:23these kits that come out in the next few weeks will be the last kits with that badge
06:27you're casting netted half at least in in for the foreseeable because like I say change can happen
06:32again and again and again and it's unlikely that in a hundred years time this badge will still be
06:37the same yes and I think look they give you an option we know this is a is a process that a lot
06:44of it is box ticking in my opinion this is only my opinion and I'll state this it doesn't these two
06:48lads either side of me might not share it either but my opinion is it's always a box ticking
06:52exercise with these things and the club have already made their decision on what they want to do
06:56they've already made their decision and they already know what the answer is I think I think
07:01they know what fans will vote for though that's why it's not an option if you're asking me now what
07:06will I vote for or what I would have voted for come on this it was revive and what's yours refine or
07:16reinvent them too I think I put I think that would be the I think that would be the general
07:22content among fans I think in that survey they know that'll be refine and revive and a redesign I
07:30don't think I don't think the club expect fans to vote for so what I think they're gonna have to do is
07:36there's gonna have to be a redefining and reimagining within everybody's own mind about what what they
07:41actually tie their identity of Newcastle United to do you we've already had to go through this
07:46process in a much more drawn out sort of manner with St James's Park and now I think everybody's
07:51kind of come to the idea that yes we love St James's Park but does it need modernized yes and do you do
07:57you define your love of Newcastle United and your feeling and your connection with the stadium is it
08:01with the badge is it with the black and white stripes is it not that is it the football club is it more
08:05and it almost has you have to beat that sort of thought process in your own mind to get to go to
08:11a position where you can accept change I think in some ways that's already happened with the stadium
08:15it's going to be a much quicker process with the badge however what I would say they already knew
08:20again this is my opinion and it might but not be the opinion of what the large share I think they
08:25already knew they were going to change the stadium they already knew they wanted to build a new one
08:30because St James's Park was not going to be fit for purpose for doing up a little bit bit of this
08:35bit of that here and there they wanted a new stadium and that hasn't been announced yet but that will
08:39be what happens there will be a new stadium Newcastle United will have one and they will also have
08:44a new badge yes that's fact it's this this consultation is box ticking yeah it's all about
08:50making it more palatable to the average fan but you've decided you you decided this yeah it was all on
08:57you you you know we gave you the option no you didn't you pretended like you gave me the option
09:01now like I say that's not necessarily the view of these two either side of me that's my personal
09:06opinion and look we're on the Geordie journals here to talk about our passionate opinions on certain
09:11things and I want to say that I think it's a box ticking and I think the decision has already been
09:16made I think they already know exactly what they want it to look like and I think that will be the
09:21outcome of this process full stop I hope they don't know what they're going to look like I hope
09:26they really take on board what fans think okay the brand identity reaches beyond Newcastle a Newcastle
09:33fan is always going to recognize that badge always going to buy the shirt go to games it's looking at
09:39a global scale and yeah what what the average fan knows about brand recognition and whether the club
09:46really seriously take on each and every fan's opinion I'd be surprised but it's one of those
09:52things I think it depends on the size of the backlash if there were to be a major backlash because I
09:57think comparing it to a badge a couple of years ago Leeds United try to essentially read it out
10:02their badge but yeah but to be fairly I don't think I don't think they went for a consultation
10:06process such as they put out and on social media and it got backlash that never changed I do think
10:11if Newcastle for example were to put out a badge that this is what we want to do and there was a major
10:15backlash I would like to think that it would take the fans opinion on board and would not go down
10:19that route of taking that badge if there wasn't when has that ever been a major backlash in Newcastle
10:23United stadium that's not been a major backlash no Mike Ashley stadium the Mike Ashley stadium is
10:30probably the one you go back the stadium name change that was more a backlash towards him though
10:34wasn't it yeah but it was these lot these lot who own the club now who I think have been great for
10:38the football club it's not a criticism like you know term them these lot but the current owners
10:42uh I talked about moving all together all he did was change your name yeah it depends a lot of it
10:48has context it's not always the decision made itself I would say the context of this today is
10:54ludicrous it's bizarre it makes no sense Newcastle United apart from the cup final and probably the
11:00semi-finals on Sunday play the biggest game of the season it's going to define whether they get
11:06champions league football and they can have all the bells and whistles and you guys have just been
11:10along with we won't even spoke about it because we'll probably won't come onto it you've literally
11:13been in there speaking Eddie Howe half an hour before where he's talking about injuries tactics
11:18opposition whatever game importance champions league budgets transfers whatever it may be it all ties
11:24in if he wants to have that summer that redefines the team that's what everybody supports and what
11:29matters and the football club have decided two days before to frame the whole of the football club
11:35and the narrative of Newcastle United around changing a badge now tell me the quick the kits for next
11:41season aren't even in the shops do it in the summer probably processes we've got to get this done got to
11:48get that done you've already done it you've already done what you want to do wait till the summer to put
11:53this process in place that's my opinion I think they have really really got this wrong you do not define
12:01the biggest day the biggest game of the season in the Premier League in terms of without the cups and
12:06frame it around a badge change because that's all people are going to talk about Friday in the pubs
12:11tonight around Tyneside Saturday morning out and about what do you think about that what do you think
12:16about that Sunday morning Sunday morning kickoff man everybody's going to be thinking about it and
12:20going on about it having to having to go through the thought process in right we'll put that out of our mind and
12:25we'll support the team now shouldn't even be a thing no I can't argue I think the timing is
12:30is silly be honest yes as you for all the reasons mentioned there it's literally the biggest game
12:37the season it's it's a Champions League decider game changing finances if you know if they ought to
12:41win don't qualify for Europe on Sunday but if they take a big step towards it the whole context of going
12:47the summer increased transfer budget except right it's so massive that game and the fact that we're now
12:52doing a video after speaking Eddie Howe on a badge I think there's a yeah it's it's not the best time
12:58let's pull it that way no did you ask Eddie Howe about the badge no we couldn't really on the live stream
13:06strictly under embargo yeah my god honestly I'm sure you wouldn't have much opinion on it
13:14no let interested know your thoughts right and we're back right so I'm really interested I think
13:22the two guys alongside me are as well do you what do you think about the process what do you think
13:28about them the main decision do you think of what do you think about change about redefine about
13:32redesign what do you how are you what is your emotions towards Newcastle United's badge and what
13:37its future may be do let me know in the comments because I'm going to read every single comment and
13:41I'm sure these guys will as well to gauge the opinion because what you tell us will probably help
13:47frame the type of stuff that we write and we talk about and discuss so if you'd be interested
13:52it would be interested we'd be interested in what exactly what all of you guys I would urge every
13:57single person who is a Newcastle United fan who watches this video to seriously think about at least
14:02adding a few words so we know and we get a gauge of the opinion particularly of our audience might not
14:08be the broader audience of Newcastle United fans but it's the people who we connect with and we like
14:12talking to you so let us know what you think he did a press conference before didn't you though Dom
14:17yeah I was keen to talk about it what did he say John out and out Eddie Howe yeah oh going to the
14:24press conference yeah yeah all right okay um couple of knocks wouldn't name the players
14:28hopes will be okay share Fabian share well I put two names to him and he just went yeah they're the
14:33good they were the knocks after Brighton who was it Sharon Sharon Trippian it came off against Brighton so
14:41Eddie Howe said I'm keeping the names under wraps I'm not there's a couple of knocks and then I went
14:45well what about Cher and Trippian and he went yeah they're good straight face as well by the way and
14:50just moved on right so they're not the knocks so everyone's all right then aren't they yeah if you
14:56just sort of do a translation of Eddie Howe you guys do a translation of them all the time everyone's
15:00all right I think they've got I think they've got concerns I don't know if it's them two players or
15:03um Eddie Howe's never going to say a player's injured Joe Linton was fine um now he's out for
15:10the season so on Joe Linton actually he's had uh injections he's been in Boston having injections
15:14but still likely they miss the end of the season which if a player's having injections is that not
15:18trying to push what are you having injections for yeah that's what I thought yeah I thought that
15:22as well he's not going to get away with Brazil is he I mean that would be bloody stupid all right
15:26Newcastle were to struggle under the new manager hasn't been confirmed yet but there's been a couple of
15:31names touted about so maybe Joe Linton would be keen to get himself in the position he was
15:35I thought it was Ancelotti's at Nottingham not in the minute it was going to be but
15:37uh George George the former Benfica manager he's just left Al-Halaf Jesus George Jesus
15:46Oh Jesus that's what I mean it doesn't sound right saying George George Jesus
15:51Jesus well yeah whatever we're going off topic there but there was that was it really I think
15:59it was a fairly low key press conference I mean the biggest line I talked about was Eddie Howe
16:03doesn't really prefer or doesn't really like 12pm kick-offs I hate them too I'm with him on that
16:07line yeah absolutely I think it's it's like if the badge wasn't enough to derail and derail
16:13thinking at least in the very uh politest terms then the 12 o'clock kick-off is just like throwing
16:20a grenade into a football match on a Sunday it's like everybody's it's no fault of any fan I do not
16:26blame it's not me saying oh get up for it and like you see all these Daphne's online going
16:30oh come on everybody sing get lost right look it's 12 o'clock on a Sunday Sundays aren't the day where
16:36people are bang up for it I'm sorry they've got work on Monday they've probably been out on the
16:40Friday or the Saturday they've already done their business for the weekend Sunday is the day of rest
16:44in the holy bible it's the day of rest but no in terms of everybody you do you chill on a Sunday
16:50you might go for your Sunday lunch you're not but you're not like getting up having your fry up in the
16:54morning and going I'm on it the day me I'm going
16:57oh it's Sunday do you know what I mean you're not the way
17:02I'm about to work tomorrow
17:04well that's all you're thinking you're like oh I'll cut the grass today it's lovely out there
17:09you know you're not you're not thinking like I'm gonna go and shout my heat off at the match
17:12so it's one of those it's just like I wish Eddie I'd give the response you gave
17:19would have been far more colourful that's why I could be in no position of responsibility Jordan
17:24and you know this yeah you're my gaffer sometimes I try to be
17:29no but it's just it's just like nobody's got time to warm up Saturday 12 o'clock is even better
17:36but that's rubbish as well but at least when you do a Saturday people are probably gearing their day
17:40around it they're going yeah well I'll have a couple before and then I'll go out after and like
17:44Sunday's just dead it's it's awful it's only because they were playing in that bloody
17:51Toys R Us cup on Thursday night that's the only reason it's 12 o'clock
17:56all right it'll be fair to how mentioned the change because Chelsea made 10 changes
17:59he was like literally the tie was as good as dead on Thursday yeah
18:03they're going to turn up at St James Park with literally a totally different 11
18:06that Thursday game has absolutely zero impact on I mean I don't really buy into the fact that
18:12if you're playing midweek you're more tired in the opposition I do think that's quite I think
18:15you're probably more mentally than physically yeah um as you cast have been plenty of times
18:19to say oh they're playing in Europe so we're gonna we should have the advantage on Sunday
18:22never never works out like that biggest advantage that this club had was and it didn't feel like
18:28at the time we'll have done videos roll the clock back there may last year or whenever it was
18:31might even kicking into June by the time the FA Cup came around last time but we were talking
18:36oh missed out on Europe Newcastle United had a basically had a buy into that competition
18:40back finishing seventh conference cup Newcastle United never kick a ball in that competition
18:46I'll be delighted I think it's an absolute sham and I'm I've got no interest in in a hollow
18:53victory of winning a trophy it is pathetic it would have been a good for the first trophy
18:57no it wouldn't it would have actually been a shambles it's as good as the Intertotal Cup
19:01and it's taken me a season to evaluate it but watching that Chelsea team take the mic by playing
19:07a bunch of kids against a team in the semi-final of what UEFA are trying to paint as a proper
19:12competition and they still want to boot 8-1 on aggregate like honestly it is in it's a shambles
19:18I do not want Newcastle ever kicking a ball in that competition but if you go in that
19:23John's trophy of UEFA it's the Papa John's trophy but if you go in that competition
19:26then Newcastle can't make 11 changes unless you I mean unless you call it the kids like but
19:30I think Chelsea's academy is far more do you really think Chelsea uh Sanford Bridge was
19:34there it's awful do you really think going to us even us right so we put ourselves here
19:39right it's a Thursday night semi-final of the conference league we're all turning up right
19:44are you still up for that the same way that you are in any other competition I don't believe
19:49I think in terms of the context of Newcastle I think we're talking about it was very different
19:52if Newcastle hadn't won the Carabao Cup a couple months ago because to me it was like
19:55we need the trophy get the monkey off or bat but wouldn't I guarantee right that and I agree
19:58with that because I think that probably would have been the thing speaking now speaking now
20:02I agree with the context now yeah so however but I know if that had to be in the first trophy
20:07it would have brought nothing but ridicule yeah I would have been standing here going
20:10that's not enough yeah and I know that sounds weird but that would have been how it worked
20:15it's a trophy the best teams can't even compete because they're not in the best teams have no
20:21interest in being in it so it's the competition everybody tries to avoid exactly yeah it's it's a
20:26consolation prize Chelsea don't even want to be in it they've won the chat they've won their two
20:30times European champions I mean they'll probably enjoy the fact of being a team to have completed
20:36the set if you like it's better for them kids it's better for the kids who played on Thursday night
20:40they'll end up getting medals and it's good for the manager the manager I'll probably say
20:43at least that was a consolation and we'll go through a good season if we can scrape in the
20:47Champions League as well that's a good start for me now we kick on it's a good thing for some
20:51people at the football club be kind of telling me any of them you know any of them lot in the stands
20:56and that they'll be like love that love that conference league champions it's not happening is it
21:03we'll take it we'll take it I think if we were embarrassed I think if we were in West Ham's position
21:08a couple years ago I think we we look upon the conference league in a very different way but
21:11because now we've won the cup and the monkey's off the bat the conference league is a hindrance more
21:16than anything else we're a much bigger club than West Ham and West Ham at the moment aren't sitting
21:20here going we need another Nick Castellanet would not have felt content with that trophy
21:26Nick Castellanet pre-takeover may well have accepted that trophy but still I think the ghost would have
21:33remained what Nick Castellanet did by winning a domestic trophy was remove all talk of that all
21:40together even you do see some of these big six supposed big six dafties they'll talk about
21:44it was only the league cup well yeah it was only the league cup but you've all won it and you've all
21:48won it plenty and you'll stick it on your your honours list and it's in your it's in your trophy
21:51cabinet so you shut up about that so even there's a little hint of that with the one Nick Castle won
21:57that is it undoubted so imagine it was the conference league man you would be getting like it would be
22:01like oh you've won the toy shop cup like seriously shut your mouths and sit back down your castle it
22:07wouldn't have taken anything away it would be then the total cup argument exactly this time
22:10do you know what it's a closer equivalent of that than the cup winners cup ever was yeah it's a
22:15closer equivalent hmm yeah sort of it is it's an actual tournament in a total cups just into
22:22total cup where the start was a tournament yeah but no one used to be a group stage at the start yeah
22:26but no one won it until three winners at the time yeah it wasn't a proper tournament I know what you
22:30mean but it's closer it's closer in stature to the to that thing than what uh cup winners cup was a
22:36proper proper cup sounds better cup winners cup was a proper tournament yeah proper teams won that
22:43properties wanted to win it I mean Newcastle won't be conference league that's probably none of their
22:47interest they're looking at Champions League Europa League worst case scenario it's not mathematical is
22:52it they could possibly still end up with it but I really hope my Palace win the cup Palace win the
22:57castle finish seventh so Newcastle finish seventh which I don't think they will and Palace win the cup
23:04which I'm not ruling out by the way it feels a little bit to me like the year of the underdog
23:09I think it's PSG's year in the Champions League I think Newcastle United have taken that that big
23:18leap be interesting to see who wins the Europa League and then six teams in English teams in the
23:24Champions League well not even even that hints into the idea that neither of them are football clubs
23:28not underdogs but it's still the idea of the underdog isn't it
